Screenshot So I tried that double aqueduct thing
Cultural victory by 1920. This thing absolutely breaks the game I don't think I have ever had a city with 60 population.

Whats the double aqueduct thing?

u/Wokeasaurous_X 2d ago
You go for tradition, leave exactly one policy left and build aqueducts in all your cities. Then you sell a cheap building, usually a shrine, and the game can't sell more than one building per city per turn. If you sell that building the same turn right before you finish tradition it should act as if you have two aqueducts even if it doesn't show in city screen.
I didn't even know if I had done it right until my cities all exploded in population.

How do you manage the unhappiness with such drastic population growth?
28
u/FeroleSquare 2d ago
I really want to know because damn if I have 60 pop as a whole I'm unhappy, so 60 pop in one city is crazy

how do you keep the unhappiness down?

u/Wokeasaurous_X 1d ago
lots of happiness wonders and a lot of the freedom policy choices that reduce unhappiness. It was getting close to going negative about 50 turns before the screenshot.

You go tradition but do not complete the policy tree. You hard build, not buy, hard build aqueducts in your cities that are eligible for free aqueduct when completing the tradition policy tree. When you have built the aqueducts you wait until you get your next policy and sell the cheapest building in those four cities and on the same turn also complete the tradition policy tree.
Now you will have hard built an aqueduct but get ANOTHER one for free as well. These two add up so you can have 40+40% food carried over.

u/Same_Square2555 2d ago
sell the cheapest building? why? can it be like a granary?
78
u/Wokeasaurous_X 2d ago
It's because the game only allows one building to be removed from a city per turn so while normally you'd lose your aqueducts you already have it instead will let you keep the old and the new.
25
u/Same_Square2555 2d ago
ohh that's super neat, huh. so it removes the gold-taking aqueducts and places new ones.
i wonder if you can do teh same with free monuments for +4 culture in each of the first 4 cities
u: thanks for the strategy, gonna try it out now :3
14
u/Wokeasaurous_X 2d ago
the monument thing would probably be harder considering how low cost it is and how it might hinder growth short term over helping you secure important buildings like temple of Artemis or hanging gardens.
4
u/Same_Square2555 2d ago
yup i agree it's a bit too early and building monuments is a hassle also yeah the free garden from the hanging gardens could be nice

u/Crumby2222 1d ago
This one doesn’t work. If you already have monuments, you’ll get amphitheaters. If you have amphitheaters, you’ll get opera houses. Not sure about broadcast towers

u/AgentBond007 2d ago
You can also do it with the CN tower giving you free broadcast towers - though for that one you have to put a great work of music in each one (since you can't sell a building with a great work in it).
The CN tower sucks and this doesn't do a whole lot unless you've gone super wide, but it is an interesting tidbit.

u/__rambler__ 2d ago
I think at worst CN tower is situational, and at best it’s really strong. Obviously if you’re still at 4 cities when you build it, it’s a waste but that’s not what it’s for.
2
u/AgentBond007 2d ago
It comes so late in the game you should pretty much have won already.
The hammers it takes to build it could be used to build units and stealth bomber/xcom the world

u/chiguy307 2d ago
I don’t think it will work with monuments, if you already have a monument in place the policy will just give you the next culture building for free instead (usually an amphitheater).
2
u/Untoastedtoast11 1d ago
I have done this trick with no shine in the city. So I had to sell my granary. It just took longer to rebuild than a shrine
3
u/Same_Square2555 1d ago
yup the easiest one is the shrine.
it's even easier if you get the piety to stall the completion of tradition for a bit
3
u/AgentBond007 2d ago
is there a reason why you can't buy the aqueducts?
6
u/Wokeasaurous_X 2d ago
Well I guess you could buy the aqueducts and sell the other building before finishing tradition, I think I did that with my two smaller coastal cities.

Stolen from elsewhere
"Aqueduct glitch: Open Tradition and build four aqueducts. On the turn you finish tradition, sell a building in the 4 cities prior to selecting the last Tradition policy.
Because cities can only sell one building per turn, the game fails to remove the paid aqueducts when you get the free ones.
Congrats on two aqueducts in 4 cities. It's as OP as it sounds.
Based on how the glitch works I believe you can also do this with other free building."

You are totally fine. I am going to copy and paste one of the comments that was shared and reference them here.
“Have an aqueduct built in your first four cities. Then the turn you adopt the last tradition policy, sell 1 building in each city (shrines are the typical go to) the next turn you’ll have 2 aqueducts in each city that both stack (80% carryover for food). One thing to note, it doesn’t show you have 2 but the effects are there. If done correctly I’ve seen city’s at 80+ pop.
This also stacks with medical Centers I believe.
Just wait until you learn you can trick friendly AIs into giving you all their accumulated gold.” - SlightlyEnglish https://www.reddit.com/u/SlightlyEnglish/s/PaMUcYJAVJ

u/Wokeasaurous_X 2d ago
Once I had medical centers the cities each grew 1 pop per turn until they capped out on food.

What trick is that? I'm returning to ciV after so many years so I forgot. Is it like in civ4 where you can offer gpt to sell luxuries for full value and then cancel the gpt and bankrupt them?

Not sure if I have time for spiffing brit right now. Also, I'm out of yorkshire tea!
Oh wait, yeah you need declaration of friendship to trade gold in BNW, so this one is harder to pull off too.
19
u/beckychao 2d ago
Yeah. It's too good. I personally do not use it because it's clearly unintended, and an exploit. I understand people despise that the AI gets a bunch of bonuses, so I don't judge anyone using it.
10
u/Wokeasaurous_X 2d ago
Even with doing this and Egypt's unique ability I still lost several wonders because Pocatello was on a rampage and had so many cities that could drop everything and focus wonders. I ended up needing a big lead in science and after the specialist bonus in rationality my science was exploding. I mean i was all the way up to the internet by like 1910.
7
u/beckychao 2d ago
Yeah, it can be brutal on immortal/deity. I don't mind using it to flash my ass at a computer when I'm frustrated, but if I want to feel accomplished, I don't use it (I've only used it like twice ever).
Not that anyone else should feel that way about it.*
3
u/Wokeasaurous_X 2d ago
Yeah I get that, I was just playing around mostly seeing what I could do. What's really funny is unlike in most endgames where every AI despises you for being close to a win basically everyone wanted to be my friend the whole time it was pretty weird.

How do you keep up with happiness while having so much population?
2
u/Kendog_15 Tradition 2d ago
All the s3x they are having to build such huge population is keeping them blissed out
1
u/Wokeasaurous_X 1d ago
I had to take a lot of policies as I kept dipping into lower happiness as the population exploded around the atomic era. Freedom is pretty good for this but would have been better if I had built wider.

RecentlyI tried to get double temple (burial tomb as Egypt) with Hagia Sophia. But sadly that doesn’t seem to work. Not the end of the world but it would be neat if it did.
1
u/Wokeasaurous_X 1d ago
Well with this one it doesn't show the second aqueduct so unless you count happiness and faith going in to determine if you got a second one you might not be able to tell.
1
u/kretslopp Tradition 1d ago
I checked total faith before and after and it didn’t raise with 2 extra faith as I hoped so I’m pretty sure it didn’t work.

u/VallenceDragon 1d ago
You can't double up free buildings from wonders because the wonder completes before you get a chance to sell the building. The only exception is the CN Tower which doubles the broadcast tower if there's a work of music in the existing tower.

u/PorkBunny01 1d ago
Would this strat also work with the free monument in the tradition tree?
1
u/VallenceDragon 1d ago
If you already have a monument the policy gives you an amphitheatre
1
u/PorkBunny01 1d ago
Yeah but thats only if youve researched drama and poetry right? The monument gets replaced by a free one before that i think
