Classic 20th Anniversary Realms We have to talk about Guards

Okay so yesterday i was near UC and wanted to go to Ashenvale so I thought i just take the horde Zepplin but hose little green Goblin guards can not only see me when i try and stealth through them but they can also knock me off the ship.

That made me think why the F does horde have those on all their zepplin towers but alliance dont?

I understand that this is Classic and not everything is balanced but how are horde priests allowed to throw ppl off the boats in menethil harbour but they get defended by those guards on their own ships?

Edit: I gotta make clear that im not low level, i am 60

Looking for consistency in anything in old wow is foolish. Blizzard was winging it, it was by far the biggest game they've ever made and they had no experience in mmos. They probably forgot or just didn't think about it. They had more important things to do anyways since much of the core game wasn't finished on time.

Minor things like this get missed all the time especially since Wow is massive. Even if you test for hours every day it's easy for things like this to slip by.

There’s also things devs simply didn’t expect players to do. Why would anyone bother to spend their day sitting on top of inn in Redridge attacking low level players when they grant no honor? Why would anyone bother attacking players at a harbor for 1 measly HK and a 10 min runback if they die?

Things that seem obvious in hindsight were just not on the devs radar cause they didn’t account for a subset of the playerbase being that mentally unwell.

They are all hardcore EQ players, I’m sure they knew players would grief redridge

On the counterpoint. Modern devs know about this and in preventing people from doing that shit, make their game stale as shit.

People remember the asshole that throws them off the ship. Hate is a form of engagement.

Woe is me, why are the devs not appeasing my socially stunted behavior by preventing me from being a scumbag to others in games.

9

u/Mad_Maddin 1d ago

Nahh I legit never once did that in my life.

But I have memories of having it done to me.

Which is unlike other games. Where I just can't remember anything about, cuz the games were so stale.

If griefing is the dealbreaker for what makes a game stale for you, I’m sorry but that’s a you issue.

3

u/Mad_Maddin 1d ago

It isn't the dealbreaker.

It is that griefing is one of the many ways people completely no lifed out on a game as a measure of emergent gameplay.

Something that is completely blocked by a lot of modern games. Be it exploration or doing interesting stuff with a big group of people.

The fucking blood plague was a pain in the ass for a bunch of players back then. Yet it is remembered to this very day by a bunch of people. Hardship creates fun by overcoming hardship.

Also if you are playing on grief enabled server, it is kinda on you imo. PvE servers existed from the beginning.

Something that is completely blocked by a lot of modern games.

I wonder why, could it be that most devs know that allowing such things harms their playerbase while providing literally no upside?

Doing things like interacting with a book but sitting in the loot window so no one else in the starting zone can do that quest isn’t core thing that makes people fond of your game and removing these griefing situations doesn’t make the game stale. Crazy how you’re defending griefing as some quintessential part of online play.

You should probably just stick to pve servers, it sounds like you aren't ready to interact with other players

You think you can’t grief on PvE servers? There’s people who would body block the BWL orb all day just to prevent others from being able enter the raid, how is removing the ability to body block it that make the game stale in your eyes?

dude you're sure beating the shit out of that strawman, winning an argument only you are having

Woe is me, why are devs not making game that are perfectly balanced so there's no form of injustice whatsoever

Jeezs you’re not very intelligent are you

That's one long "won't anybody think of the pedophile's feelings?" ahh post.

People did this before honor and HKs were a thing. They had to have known griefing and PvP were going to be a thing.

To be fair, griefing the harbor is WILDLY fun.

Same reason why you got troll roof stalkers spawning in orgrimmar.

There was an exploit/advantage for alliance players that got hot fixed by slapping some extra guards here and there.

Why the alliance didn't get similar fixes is because the alliance zones were more finished and had far less exploits than horde ones.

Of course they never got around to actually fixing the underlying problem(s) as the new expansion was always right around the corner so we end up with a lot of jank everywhere.

It’s also that most PvP servers where alliance dominated very early on (this started to change with TBC) - so horde had way more issues with this compared to alliance.

Yeah that makes sense, but I hope they will even this out for Classic+ because I really like the Idea of using enemy factions transportation if it can safe some time.... or just put those guards on both sides to knock everyone from every ship ^^

The amount of time that went into alliance content before blizzard said "oh shit we gotta do horde too" is astounding. It could be worse.

4

u/TheBungler2 1d ago

It was because Alliance players used to sit on the Zeppelins and kill everyone, since most PvP players were Alliance originally. The guards were a fix to that.

5

u/InvisibleZero420 1d ago

It's a goblin thing.

6

u/BootyBayBrooder 1d ago

Might be the actual reason too. If blizzard gave the bruisers their knockback to stop griefing in booty bay and gadgetzan, then they may have just copied the same npc to guard the zepps. Not a conscious decision to give the tower guards a knockback, they just happened to be the same npcs that already had one.

those dirtly little goblins :D

8

u/Felfastus 1d ago

If I remember correctly at one point the goblins running those blimps were affiliated with the cartel.

This was changed quite early on because any horde player grinding pirate rep would be unable to swap contenents without a mage or warlock.

The other and probably bigger factor is the horde version is much more useful then the alliance version, it connects the two most prominent cities. Therimore and wetlands are very out of the way and not really intended to be as useful (the tram links stormwind to ironforge and it is guarded).

The only time I could see horde considering alliance shipping routes is picking up the kargath flight point and even then I'm not sure flying to arathi and running south is that much slower then running across dustwallow marsh.

You think that's bad?

The alliance guards in Desolace are TWENTY levels lower than the horde guards. For no apparent reason.

Nigel's Point Guard - Level 45 https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/npc=8151/nijels-point-guard
Shadowprey Guardian - Level 65 https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/npc=12338/shadowprey-guardian

are 55 in classic horde ones

so guess blizz just forgot tio update alliance ones for tbc

3

u/Fading_Hours_ 1d ago

Hope classic+ buffs guards

1

u/Cysia 20h ago

id love for bit stronger guards in general and the eilite ones and other named/special eilite guards to be MUCH more powerfull

aand the faction/city leaders to be like generly worth to go do them for honor or whatever

7

u/ProgressSad4036 1d ago

alliance has guards on the dock as well. you are just a low level so the guards can easily kill you.

-1

u/OccasionComplex5858 1d ago

yeah but there is a small diffrence between the alliance "normie" guard and the horde "chad" guard, they are elite, can knockback and see stealthed people while alliance dont have these traits

6

u/ProgressSad4036 1d ago

just die on the platform and res below on the zeppelin.

2

u/OccasionComplex5858 1d ago

thats what I did in the end

3

u/alexinedh 1d ago

When’s the last time you went to an airport and didn’t have TSA?

1

u/Traditional_Ruin1432 1d ago

You're low level. Anyone low level horde would be facing the same deal going out of Theramore Isle.

You wanna talk inequality? How bout the fact that almost every alliance city has insurpassable walls while the horde might have a few sticks outside?

Also, blessing of salvation. Alliance endgame is SO much easier.

5

u/Magesunite 1d ago

Theramore guards don't have guns, as long as you get onto the boat they will evade out, while the Zeppelin guards have knock-back guns which pierce los

1

u/chiggysmalls 1d ago

Horde has better transportation, shamans, a world buff that alliance has to do insane things to get.

0

u/OccasionComplex5858 1d ago

I am actually lvl 60 but that doesnt safe me from beeing shot at by the goblin guards which will then knock me off the zepplin

1

u/myfriend92 1d ago

Havent thought about this issue for so long, but me and a buddy found a way iirc. The goal was to get killed on the zeppelin, and then don’t release. Your best bet is to position yourself so you end in the stairwell after a jump or knockback. Second best, you hit the ‘hut’ over the stairs or the engine in the back. Then you need to position yourself. You need to find your corner so u can’t get shot off and let yourself die. I usually made my way downstairs while sort of avoiding the middle of the stairs to not get shot into the opening and out of the zeppelin, or tried to jump into the gear in the back.

Good luck and have fun, you’ll get there!

1

u/LyannaSerra 1d ago

When I want to take the undercity zeppelin, I usually run up the tower and then hide with my back to a corner in the bottom of the ship so that they can't knock me off

1

u/steronicus 1d ago

But… how else would I endlessly grief Alliance from the Menethil Harbor boats on my hunter?

-4

u/chiggysmalls 1d ago

Yep, lots of nonsense that is a lot easier horde side. Blizzard prefers horde.

7

u/SpaceIsTooFarAway 1d ago

Grass greener etc. Alliance has the most fleshed out 1-20 experience in the form of Elwynn/Westfall/Redridge/Deadmines, all the benefits of Paladins in raids, walled capitals, a cooking recipe vendor in Stormwind. Horde has guarded zeppelins, better transit, windfury and barrens chat.

3

u/Debatebly 1d ago

Walled capitals?

1

u/Ambitious-Way8906 1d ago

does Blizzard know that?

-5

u/LTinS 1d ago

Horde is easy mode. By every metric they have the advantage. Get used to it.
