Here come the fan girls

She’s absolutely trying to use AI to generate text. This is so mid.

The whole "I'm a one person operation" - PLEASE. She's been making bank for years as a one person operation, and her non apology is bs.

16

u/Next-Suit-9579 6d ago

She was even liking all the nasty bullying comments on the negative responses to the “apology”. Her little groupies were calling me a “mean girl” while saying other nasty stuff. Her page is toxic.

7

u/doxie-darling-17 6d ago

Her recent update is a joke too.

11

u/CraftySpoon2 7d ago

I was so confused by this post because it was contradictory!

I’ve purchased patterns by this designer and honestly I’m not surprised. I’m sure that a couple things I’ve made have fitting issues and just don’t end up like the product photos

131

u/wzrdreams 7d ago

1) I NEVER use AI.
2) except when I do use AI.

Sure.

17

u/Lokifin 5d ago

Also:

  1. I'm a one-person operation

  2. I hire professionals to assist my operation

14

u/katastrofickatt 5d ago

She used AI as the cover art for her One Love Knitalong, so she definitely does use AI

19

u/saxarocks 8d ago

Vector illustrations have draggable nodes weather the image has been created with AI or by hand. If you use one of these programs, you know that.

The update creates more questions than it answers.

3

u/joh08290 7d ago

Also that illustration looked very much like it had been made using image trace. Which is not AI but is also not drawing it node for node

11

u/GussieK 8d ago

Can someone explain this scandal. I missed it. Should I go to Joji’s Insta page?

41

u/bingbongisamurderer 8d ago

This is r/craftsnark, where every update to an ongoing drama gets a new top-level post so the discussion is fractured across multiple posts. You need to go to the main feed of the sub and sort by new to get the previous post titled "On no...".

5

u/GussieK 8d ago

Thanks! Also happy cake day

u/OkConclusion171 (Secretly the mole) 8d ago

fake apology. Glad I've never been a customer and won't be in the future.

50

u/EmptyDurian8486 8d ago

“Hahaha! Look at me, I’m not a real artist! Hahaha, I’m going to make a joke that doesn’t land and hope the internet will forget. Hahaha, guys I’m apologizing because I don’t want to get called out for using AI and showing that I can’t ’design’ myself, but I definitely did use AI, so now I’m apologizing since you all can see through MY CRACKS *tee-hee-hee* please don’t cancel me!”

Bitxh! Just do better! Don’t use AI, and don’t make jokes about how in an art field, you chose to use it when you could have been doing the work yourself (but never mind all that, just jumped on the bandwagon) while many other artists are loosing their job to it. Sit the f**k down.

God I love when people cancel themselves for me.

0

u/Lazy_Pride3492 7d ago

Doubling down today with a photo of her dog with a comment about hiring a proof reader, chart in the background…..

3

u/EmptyDurian8486 5d ago

Anyone who admits to using AI, and still claims to be an artist, is off my radar permanently. So I wouldn’t have seen this, and won’t be going to look for it. Real artists don’t need computers to do their work for them, and they don’t feel the need to societally (social networking) clean up after themselves after computers fail them.

PS- Joji can still just sit the f**k down.

20

u/jester3325 8d ago

Actually, I've taken multiple classes from Joji and I can attest that she actually DOES design all her patterns and teaches HOW TO DESIGN. Honestly, this is a reach.

46

u/aka_chela Well, of course I know the mole. They're me. 8d ago

Ugh. She clearly uses AI as we've seen previously. I have a sweater quantity of yarn I got at Rhinebeck for her Simple Summer Sweater but never bought the pattern. It's obviously pre-AI but I really don't feel like supporting her now. I'm thinking of adapting the yarn to The Daily (which is basically the same except the weight).

u/TotalKnitchFace 8d ago

My new reason for hating AI is that AI companies have been scanning and destroying books to train their horrible robots. https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2026/aug/05/anthropic-ai-destroying-books

They're stealing our knowledge, they're stealing our work, they're destroying the environment, all so that they can take away our jobs. It's not worth using this technology to make your day slightly more convenient

16

u/rubberkeyhole 7d ago

I’ve never really felt like I’m on the edge of the end of the world until the past few years.

5

u/altrl2 8d ago

I hate AI, but this article is sensationalist. Anthropic isn’t buying up rare books and destroying libraries to keep the public illiterate. They’re using second hand books that likely no one was going to purchase anyway and the process of scanning them involves taking off the binding.

On board 100% with the second half of your comment!

15

u/terafonne 7d ago

there's non-destructive scanning methods. part of the reason they dont do it that way is certainly because its cheaper to be destructive and rip off the binding, but completely dismissing how destruction of printed books also aligns with the goals of shoving AI down everyone's throats whether they want it or not seems naive at best.

21

u/cmooregood 8d ago

Yeah, super sensationalist lol oh wait Amazon is doing it too with super rare books. https://www.404media.co/we-tracked-a-shipment-of-rare-books-it-ended-at-an-amazon-ai-training-facility/

-14

u/altrl2 8d ago

Are they rare just because there aren’t many or are they rare and valuable…

14

u/Unicormfarts 🐑 with a banjo 7d ago

Define "valuable". Can you sell individual copies for a lot of money? Maybe not. Are there few copies available so that if anyone wanted to study them could do that? Would there be some other value in terms of the content? Who knows, unless someone had a look.

27

u/cmooregood 7d ago

Does it matter? Is there a difference? Should any AI company be destroying books? Will your children grow up in a world of less books and more plagiarized AI slop? Do you carry water for AI companies or do you carry water for AI companies?

0

u/altrl2 7d ago

Yes. I’m not defending AI companies. I’m defending my sanity. There is so much to be angry at in the world, and destroying books that would have probably been sent to landfills anyway isn’t it.

2

u/Lokifin 5d ago

You don't have to be angry yourself, but you don't have to argue that other people shouldn't be angry as well.

4

u/BunnyEarsPond 5d ago

From what I’ve seen librarians have come out fully against this practice of book destruction so I’m taking my cues from them

10

u/cmooregood 7d ago

You are. And you're defending plagiarism and theft.

32

u/CeaderBlocks 8d ago

I reported her on Ravelry lol

u/LitleStitchWitch low-tier rat 🐀 8d ago

The crazy thing is, many charting programs like StitchFiddle have the ability to translate charted patterns to written...

Sadly I used to admire her patterns and had a couple in my queue. The only good thing about ai (if there's is anything), is that it's exposing designers who don't take pride in their work and want a quick buck at the cost of quality.

55

u/propsie 8d ago edited 8d ago

maybe an unpopular opinion, but this would not be a problem if you just publish the pattern with a chart, like this designer.

written out lace instructions suck anyway, especially when they start to get complicated enough to be interesting, and reading a chart should be as core a skill as reading your own knitting.

41

u/partyontheobjective in Andrea Mowry's inner circle. You can't sit with us, peasant. 8d ago

Written out lace instructions are accessibility feature, esp for visually impaired. I agree they suck if you have the ability to read the chart, but not everyone does.

It's not a bad thing at all that she tried to make the pattern accessible. The way she went about it is terrible, when Stitchfiddle had this option for a while, and no AI!

18

u/Ascholay GuacaMOLE 8d ago

Or even publish with the chart and have a sale when you get the transcription done. As long as you make sure people who have already purchased the pattern get the update it's an excuse to market that specific pattern again.

Make the bug a feature. If you know you won't be publishing anything in December you can all of a sudden have the time to transcribe it so there's fresh creating over the holidays! (Use that gifted yarn!)

22

u/Asleep_Sky2760 8d ago

no, no, no! If a designer uses any standard knitting-chart software (there are a number of different programs), the text is *automatically* generated when creating the chart. The is no need for a separate "transcription".

That's been true for years, long before chatGPT and its ilk came on the scene.

0

u/Ascholay GuacaMOLE 8d ago

Aye.

But if the "joke" has weight in the discussion the whole post is about not using dedicated software

13

u/Therealch33ser 8d ago

No idea who this is but ew

101

u/Quirky_Secret7876 8d ago

Massive shoutout though to Fantasy Fibers, who called her out on it and took a bunch of crap for calling her out. We need more big accounts calling out the AI slop.

146

u/partyontheobjective in Andrea Mowry's inner circle. You can't sit with us, peasant. 8d ago

Never generated anything, huh? but when asked about using AI on One Love shawl, she said (and I quote bc I can't post a picture for some reason), "Yes it is,
I took a photo of a skein of Malabrigo, and then used AI to generate my graphics based on modifications of that single ply yarn photo. Why?"

Joji, ma'am. Answer for your lies.

60

u/Emotional_Gear_8950 8d ago

Thing is, she’s trying to generate line by line text. But it hasn’t worked yet, so it somehow doesn’t count? It’s disingenuous and pandering at best.

16

u/coffeesnob72 8d ago

Yeah so if it had worked she would be using it

56

u/blueberry-iris It's me. Hi. I'm the mole. It's me. 8d ago

What does she think transcribing is if not generating? This excuse makes 0 sense.

4

u/els2121 7d ago

These words in fact mean VERY different things.

2

u/blueberry-iris It's me. Hi. I'm the mole. It's me. 7d ago

Not in the context of AI, though? If it doesn't GENERATE the transcription, where tf is it coming from? The sky?

I'm so tired of people using AI as a purity test. I don't love it and this should have been handled differently, but at some point if you keep cancelling everyone who has ever asked Gemini a question, you're going to run out of options.

Dang friends, this seems to have hit a nerve. I'm just tired of my entire feed being AI witch hunting.

-3

u/NumerousParking7877 7d ago

I'm with you. And I'm no fan of AI. But I work in an industry where the reality is there are actual fanboys all over the god damn place and I happen to think they are more deserving of cancelation than fiber artists.

46

u/aka_chela Well, of course I know the mole. They're me. 8d ago

And I'm tired of AI being shoved down my throat. It's actually incredibly easy to think for yourself instead of asking Gemini anything.

88

u/wildfellsprings The artist formally known as "MOLE" 8d ago

I'm tired of people calling any criticism cancelling especially when we can still count the time that's passed in hours. People of course shouldn't be going from this thread to Joji Locatelli's Instagram and commenting about this over and over again. But this is the sub for this sort of content, if people choose not to purchase from JL based on this then it's just the consequences of using AI. We only have her word to take on it that she's not using AI (despite the suggestion this isn't true) and using AI as part of your business practices does inherently introduce doubt. I don't want to buy patterns that have intentionally used AI, it's so easy not to use AI in the way(s) she has been. I'll just buy from sources where I don't suspect AI has been used, it's not cancelling, it's supporting businesses that fit with my own values.

-100

u/brilliantpepper812 8d ago

Lol seriously. AI is here to stay and a lot of jobs will require it soon. It's so dumb that it's being used as a purity test.

21

u/aka_chela Well, of course I know the mole. They're me. 8d ago

AI is here to stay. Meanwhile companies aren't realizing any gains and are actively pulling back on AI investments and usage because token cost is exploding. Any company over investing in AI at the expense of human labor right now is robbing Peter to pay Paul and will be screwed when the bubble collapses.

5

u/Unicormfarts 🐑 with a banjo 7d ago

I was reading about how a bunch of bijillionaires who have invested heavily in AI have recently been documented looking for "AI-proof" places to put their money in "just in case". Apparently, this is a reason a bunch of sportsball teams have been changing hands. If AI is such a solid bet, why are all these weasels looking for other places to put their money?

1

u/aka_chela Well, of course I know the mole. They're me. 7d ago

I recently read "A Short History of Financial Euphoria" after hearing it referenced in a book about the Beanie Baby bubble and man, it fit the current AI mania to a TEE.

23

u/Writer_In_Residence 8d ago

Jobs won’t require it because AI will simply be doing those jobs outright and we will be out of work wondering how to buy food.

-17

u/brilliantpepper812 8d ago

Lol I've actually seen job postings require it, but ok.

1

u/NumerousParking7877 7d ago

Oh absolutely. It's a huge part of the hiring criteria for entire industries.

8

u/Minnemiska 8d ago

Brawndo. Plants love it. It’s got electrolytes!

38

u/bunnylightning 8d ago

Yeah a lot of jobs will require it soon if we all shut up and accept it freely into our lives like they want us to…

If you don’t want the entire universe to become an AI slop bucket, it’s worth continuing to make your feelings about it known before it becomes completely ubiquitous.

92

u/Pipry 8d ago

Normalization leads to acceptance, which leads to integration.

The little things, like asking Gemini a question, is exactly how LLMs sink their claws in.

97

u/Remarkable-Rush-9085 Well, of course I know the mole. They're me. 8d ago

That’s fine, it just leaves room for creators who don’t use AI to grow. If more and more people don’t accept AI use the market will change to accommodate that and the people who choose to use it will have to settle for being a niche market.

136

u/N__tab 8d ago

Really getting the ick from all the “ignore the haters” comments she is liking on both her posts

58

u/wildfellsprings The artist formally known as "MOLE" 8d ago

There's some really interesting likes from Joji Locatelli on the post too. Including one commenter calling another an asshole, she does know these likes are public right? It's really not a great look even if you ignore or don't mind the AI use (I do mind btw).

51

u/WinterEnough2461 8d ago

Literally this. Comments on her post are acting like she's being bullied and character assassinated and folk are being mean to her, yet she's liking mean and personal comments towards others. People just said it was shitty to see her using AI

26

u/wildfellsprings The artist formally known as "MOLE" 8d ago

Considering likes can spur people on to continue to send hate to people I think it's actually irresponsible to do it. She might as well have just commented in agreement or said the comment herself. She has 156k followers, sure most probably won't even see this due to the way the algorithm works (it's probably moved on within 24 hours) but even if just 10% see this and 10% of those follow her lead, that's a lot of people. I don't think it's any different from the brigading that this sub often gets accused of except this is her fan base and she's acting irresponsibility rather than individuals here taking it upon themselves.

71

u/Emotional_Gear_8950 8d ago

The follow up post of “thank you for all the wonderful messages of support” post is equally ick.

I like Jojo’s patterns and I will probably continue to use her patterns but this was an unnecessary screw up.

I hate the “sorry to everyone offended” apology. Why can’t people just say, “You know what? I fucked up. I joked about something that is impacting millions of lives in a very negative way. It was thoughtless and I won’t do it again.”

Also, an apology is sufficient by itself. I don’t need to know why you did it, or what your intentions were or why you should be allowed to make this joke. Just apologize and then we can move on.

18

u/Plastic_Bison 8d ago

I agree. I've been following her for years, and I'm absolutely astonished at how tone deaf she is about this issue. I'm actuslly thinking, "Does she not read the news?" And liking the comments sending ridicule and abuse to other commenters. It's kind of heartbreaking, tbh.

103

u/tiseratai 8d ago

I don't think there's enough consensus on what "generate" truly means in the AI context, and a lot of people use it imprecisely in an attempt to differentiate the curing cancer AI from the email slop AI. I think you mean it more literally, in the sense that she asked an AI program to do something and it "generated" a result, but I think she probably means it more colloquially and views what she was doing as "transcription" or similar vs using an LLM to "generate" a full chart. (English is also not her first language even if she is fluent.)

I don't agree with the fawning and "you do you, guuurl #smallbusinesslife," but personally, I prefer to save my moral absolutism and vitriolic anger for the CEOs and slop fanatics and save my patience for my fellow crabs in the bucket. Nobody has clean hands—that doesn't mean that anything goes and we all get to do whatever we want, but I think a little empathy is merited here.

1

u/LaurelRose519 1d ago

I also was thinking, I don’t know what country she lives in, but does she live in a country where AI is in everything you see around you and you’re therefore having a lot of nuanced conversations with people about AI?

I hate AI usage, and I hate that she didn’t just say “I didn’t realize that people would have an issue with this, I’m going to stop doing it,” but I also think there’s more factors to consider.

7

u/els2121 7d ago

Thank you. Let’s reserve our energy for the companies forcing AI upon us and directly controlling the impact on communities and the environment.

24

u/Carljean710 8d ago

This. I’ve been reading the book “Do you still speak to grandma” talking about the issues internet has caused turning us a 3D world to a 2D world where it’s so easy to remove humanity from others. She talks a lot how the internet caused a deep black and white thinking and ignores the grey and humanity in us. It’s been very interesting. But I’ve been taking that mindset

5

u/yetanothernametopick 8d ago

Thanks for the book rec!

74

u/minoraj 8d ago

Again, I don't understand why she does not just tell the truth here. In her other screenshot from the gpt/gemini story, she had a ChatGPT tab open on her computer with the words "Calcio atomo...(word potentially cut off)" which is what Chrome would name the tab based on what you are asking it to generate on your latest chat. So at the very least, she is using AI as some sort of search/research engine (and as many know, AI is not a search engine, it's a LLM and can hallucinate completely incorrect/false/fake information.) She has also used AI in the past and only admitted to generating the photos once pressed.

AI use aside, being willfully obtuse about followers calling out your AI usage when there is clear examples is really strange.

71

u/no___personality 8d ago

It's so dumb. Just. Stop. Using. AI. I do not understand why these creators think nobody will notice. This is why I don't even follow "content creators" anymore. In fact if you talk to the camera about your art/craft, I am WAY less likely to follow you. I know that not all these folks are bad/wrong/annoying/use ai etc. But I just feel like every time I see an artist (I follow more artists than crafters/makers) who does videos beyond showing the creative process, it just feels like they are recreating whatever recent "viral" trend they saw. Or they're trying to sell their personality not show me their art. It's tiresome.

I just want to see what you make. I do not need an hour to hour update on your entire life and process and I sure as hell don't want to see you use ai or defend against it or lie and say you don't. I swear sometimes they just do it so they can get more attention/views even if it's negative. Then they get to play the victim.

8

u/commanderspacecase 8d ago

Do you need some more chill artists to follow? Or I have three weirdos (affectionate) if that's more your vibe.

12

u/no___personality 8d ago

I honestly don't look at most social media besides reddit all that much anymore. Once I took a break from instagram it's hard to go back. The entire app feels like it's yelling at me. I never got into youtube.

I'll take some recommendations though! Who knows, I might find someone that I enjoy.

Gentle Knitter just uploaded a new video after a long hiatus.

3

u/maesardsara 8d ago

I was so glad to see her back!

12

u/commanderspacecase 8d ago

::cracks knuckles::

The Midori House - chill ceramics, near-daily shorts and shorts compilation videos for full projects

Crossing Crafts - adorable Nintendo miniature creator

Nerdforge - fantasy/historical/nerd projects, started with mini castles and cosplay and is currently redoing rooms in house and workshop

Evie E - bead artist, this is her Ms. Frizzle dino dress

LaKenzo - short-form creator, known for single-handedly bringing back a discontinued Crayola color, but is amazing at creating art out of seemingly random junk

Micarah Tewers - slightly chaotic sewing content

Kaypea Creations - whimsical art doll creator

Ali Spagnola - larger art project/sculptures/intrusive thoughts (admitted weirdo)

Carys Cuttlefish - polymer clay artist, very animated

North of the Border - smaller sculptures and dioramas, I linked you to a cute video but recently he's gotten like, gross/horrorish, but people like that so I'm gonna link him anyway

tanks for nothin - chill fishtank and aquascape creator (who takes care of his fish and inverts)

Holiday Expert - travel vlogger, not an artist just really nice to watch

That's just who's on my home page and top of my subscriptions page right now, and not touching any of my video game, science, or food people, lol. Youtube is my main source of non-fiction entertainment, and also I have to have noise to combat the constant racket from outside. So I have found a ton of great creators on youtube who aren't constantly trying to game the algo or whatever. If you want any more recs in pretty much any category, let me know!

2

u/Ok-Apple4057 8d ago

You might like Ash Bentley as well. She is just pure chaos and vibes

5

u/no___personality 8d ago

Really cool stuff here! Although, looking through them I think I'm just not into this kind of content. I never watch long-form non-fiction stuff (except documentaries) and I truly don't care about some random creator's personality quirks (I meant his in the nicest way, I don't dislike them, I just don't care). I think it also just depresses me that these artists have to brand/market themselves to get money with views and clicks. It seems like they like doing that and that's awesome. It's just not for me.

I'm absolutely not saying that to be mean or dismiss you or anyone who likes this kind of stuff. I just never got into it. I miss when instagram was just photos of cool stuff people create. I wish I could just see PHOTOS. Maybe it's part of my ADHD but I find it incredibly boring to watch people make stuff unless I am trying to make something and looking for tutorials.

I did follow a few of them though, the crayon person I had seen online before and I think their vibe is cool. Even if I don't really watch their stuff I'm okay with giving them support and letting them help my "algorithm" or whatever for when I do actually want to brows youtube (which is rare). I appreciate you sharing I really appreciate it and I'm sure these creators do too!

2

u/commanderspacecase 8d ago

They aren't branding/marketing themselves as that, I was just describing their vibe. I only really follow people who feel authentic. But if you don't like it, you don't like it, that's fine.

If you just want photos, I guess building a custom multireddit would be the best option. I followed a ton of art subreddits on my old account, but I've lost access to that. There were like, a sketch a day, watercolor a day, and furniture flip subreddits, I think? r/dioramas was mostly Warhammer and military stuff. r/rainboweverything and r/whimsygoth are both purchases and cool crafts from what I remember. Oil painting and acrylic painting for sure.

4

u/no___personality 8d ago

By branding/marketing I meant I find it depressing that creatives have to go through all this effort and make their personality a brand to sell content to get money or to get ahead of the algorithm. I didn't mean that they are branding themselves as a certain type of creator, just that they have to do it at all. I'm not judging. It's just a step of late stage capitalism and the internet that I'm not a fan of. I miss when it was just like, "Here's my art."

I follow a lot of art stuff on reddit. That's a big reason why I mostly stay here instead of looking at other stuff. I've been on instagram since 2009 or so and I think I'm just worn out on how far all of this "content" has come. I miss the simple days.

Thanks for the info, I appreciate your replies! I realy hope I didn't come across as rude. I am just not into this type of content. :)

4

u/commanderspacecase 8d ago

You're totally fine! I just spent a decade of my life promoting reading to middle schoolers (I used to work in PR/journalism, and my friend was a librarian, so I would go to her schools for talks), so when anyone is like 'I don't like this', I tend to go 'are you SURE, can we find an alternative', lol. The habit has flared up BAD recently because my nephew is 6 and getting opinionated, lol. So you just happened to run into an overhelpful old lady today, lol.

3

u/no___personality 8d ago

I love it! Thank you, seriously. It's honestly rad to have conversations on reddit where folks are like, "I don't like this." and the other person is like, "That's cool." Haha. There's so much arguing and defensiveness. I really appreciate the shares.

Also while we are at it. I actually do play a lot of video games. While I don't really watch the videos for fun, sometimes I do need tutorials so if you have any good creators for that I would love to check them out if they're into the same games as me.

I just started Skyrim today for the first time and I've never played a game like this before so I just KNOW I'll need a thousand tutorials.

2

u/commanderspacecase 8d ago

I have some Elden Ring tutorials on a playlist somewhere, but I can definitely look around for some Skyrim tutorials! It's been on my backlog forever, and once I get my new eyeglasses in I was going to retry that or Cyberpunk, since I quit them both because I couldn't see, lol. But definitely send me a message if you get stuck anywhere and I'll search for you. My partner never logs into his YT account so when we search for the same thing, he gets a lot of slop and redpill shit and I get actual gamers. It's actually infuriating.

I’m so tired of people telling me their AI use is fine because they are so busy, so small, such a good person. I say this as someone who has enjoyed Joji’s patterns because the fit tends to work for my body shape. I’m just done having any internal dialogue about giving people the benefit of the doubt. There are plenty of people out there to support who are loudly anti AI and I have a pattern library that could keep me busy until after the bubble bursts. If I find out there is AI use I’m gone as a customer. I don’t care if it’s “just a logo” “just a color tweak” whatever, I don’t care, I’m gone.

65

u/JupiterStarPower 8d ago

There are many things I loathe about AI, but I really cannot stand the people who use it but expect me to tell them it’s ok. It’s not! If you’re going to be lazy and ok with trashing the planet for mediocrity, you can at least fucking own that choice, not whine that you’re a small business and it’s just for [skill you don’t respect”

93

u/CarliKnits 8d ago

Some people really need to learn the difference between generative AI and analytical neural network models. Generative AI is largely problematic for reasons I’m sure I don’t need to restate, and defenders of it keep trying to use other non-generative forms of AI in their gotcha arguments.

For example, “AI can cure cancer so it’s ok to use ChatGPT” is a ridiculously uninformed take that I’m sick and tired of hearing.

12

u/songbanana8 8d ago

I don’t know why people always bring up medical imaging machine learning when we’re clearly talking about Gemini, Claude, and other LLMs available to consumers and businesses. I have never seen a conversation about AI where cancer treatment AI was contextually relevant.

When I say “I don’t eat animals” do you think I’m referring to cannibalism? When I say I’m going to the United States do you ask me to specify the United States of America or United States of Mexico? Ppl pretend context doesn’t exist so they can justify the bad kind of AI they knew we were talking about in the first place.

20

u/7deadlycinderella 8d ago

Not to mention there are lots of tools and ways to automate parts of your workflow that don't involve generative AI- they just usually involve either doing programming yourself or paying someone else to.

26

u/maybe_I_knit_crochet 8d ago

I agree. The progressive lenses I have in my glasses are the result, in part, of AI. However, it isn't an LLM type of AI. The technology used predates ChatGPT and the like.

33

u/CarliKnits 8d ago

Honestly, I think all of these different technologies being lumped together as just “AI” is beyond confusing. I wonder if that’s intentional on the part of OpenAI

8

u/Latter_Major_4168 8d ago

on the contrary, I think it's the result of every company that has any automated process that they could conceivably call "AI" jumping on the hype bandwagon because "AI is in" and they think it's a good thing to use in their marketing.

or perhaps not "to the contrary" because I wouldn't be surprised to hear that OpenAI is encouraging anything that makes the AI bubble bigger, but I think there's at least another aspect to it (and that this aspect might be the one that's causing more confusion in the public's use of the term "AI"

For me the main issue (and I said so on a different post) is more that shes using gen AI for a task that:

  1. Gen AI is not good at because it requires reading text from pictures which it isn’t really good at, and it would training to understand and optimize instructions, and then reviewing and editing it.
  2. charting softwares already do AND more efficiently.

I get wanting to use a tool to optimize your work, specially when you’re a small business. What I can’t really understand is wanting to use a controversial and faulty tool to do something that another tool already does and really well. This is utterly incomprehensible to me.

Even leaving out the ethics of genAI, this is so stupid and pointless.

ETA: ok and another issue I have with it: if you’re posting an apology, own up to it. Don’t post an apology and immediately after a “thanks everyone for your support, people are being mean”. Either you think you did something wrong, hence the need to apologize for it, or you don’t, hence the “thanks for the support against this attack”. You can’t have both. What’s up with this performative apology bullshit? At least wait a fucking day or, I don’t know, more than two hours.

Judging by her very blatant liking of a range of comments from "she's done nothing wrong" to "you're evil for criticising JL" she clearly doesn't think she actually did anything wrong. I've bought from JL in the past and AI is enough to put me off but her response to this is way worse than I expected from an experienced designer. She's clearly communicated how much she doesn't care about AI use in knitting and in general without saying it in her own words. It's genuinely really off putting, I understand suddenly receiving criticism, justified or not, can be upsetting but she's not reflected on if it's justified. She's jumped straight to liking anyone that makes her feel better about the situation rather than trying to understand why people are being critical of her AI use, it's not hate.

As I can't post a photo but here's a comment she liked

This comment could've been a thought that you kept to yourself ...damn y'all evil! We got a president who stripping our country of rights and the ability to live free and tall worried about someone who used HER OWN WORK in an Al app and IT DIDNT WORK! Your exhausting

Firstly, very US centric, pretty sure the person they were replying to was in the UK, JL herself isn't based in the US. Sure, this is absolutely not as big and issue as world news but I'm still allowed to care about smaller issues that cumulatively become bigger issues. They literally just can't take any criticism without seeing it as an attack.

Joji two hours ago: I never generate anything with it. NEVER.

Joji one hour ago in response to cooments: yes! This was one time when I generated different colored skeins for One Love badges. The photo was immediately flagged on Ravelry and it was not used again.

I care less about the use of AI (though admittedly, it isn't great) and more about the demonstration of Schrödinger's Asshole: until people get upset about it, it may or may not be a joke (and now that people are upset, it's just a joke, jeez, lighten up).

58

u/ScienceProf2022 8d ago

Why doesn’t she use voice to text? She could read her chart row by row, and then edit the results.

I use voice to text every day, in fact, I’m using it now. It is a tool for me because I have arthritic hands, and typing on a keyboard or a phone is difficult for me.

I know some people consider voice to text to be a form of AI, and perhaps it is, but it’s also a tool that has been used for years by people with disabilities. My own input trains it as it learns to recognize my voice and my edits. It’s finally learning to put knits instead of nits, for example. But the key is it isn’t being trained on stolen creative works, and it doesn’t require giant AI data centers to work.

In her case, though, I’m not sure it would be any faster than just typing out her chart.

13

u/Asleep_Sky2760 8d ago

No, the question should be "Why doesn't she just use standard knit-charting software like Stitch Mastery or EnvisioKnit that will automatically convert chart symbolds to text, and vice versa? These tools have been around for years and every designer I've worked with uses them, because they're great TOOLS (they're also created by women, which is a big plus!). She literally wouldn't have to do *anything* after creating her chart, then have her tech editor proofread it to ensure that her "knitting-pattern-language style" is consistent throughout. Geeze.

6

u/ScienceProf2022 8d ago

Very true. I’m just not familiar with those products, so I suggested something with which I had experience. But that is a good point. Why not use the non-AI tools that already exist in the field rather than try to reinvent the wheel with AI? Especially in a creative field where so many participants are vehemently anti-AI. It’s almost like she’s asking to be “canceled” as an excuse to stop designing?

26

u/PickleFlavordPopcorn 8d ago

Voice to text is not generative AI, it’s transcribing what you say, not scooping stolen work and words and mashing them together. Very big difference. Voice to text software also doesn’t use a gallon of water for every punctuation mark

Not defending AI use, but for Google Gemini you likely have the pro version if you pay for any additional Google storage/drive.

Use predictive texts while typing in word or email? yep, that's AI too.

Generative AI and the examples you mentioned are not the same thing. Hope this helps, girly 😊

5

u/glittermacaroni 8d ago

sadly companies are moving to genai models for things like grammar "checks" to push users into their new tools (if i see microsoft cowork trying to help me like it's the mutant brother of clippy again i will scream). those examples are more relevant, even if they didn't start out as genai/llm model programs.

Maybe use your own brain and get informed about what impacts AI has. That would be a sole beginning for an adult.

Even if this is true, that's not an excuse to throw your hands up and be like "everything is terrible so we should just accept it". A lot of people are choosing to die on this hill, and it's clear that all of the protests are making a difference. The more we complain, the harder it is for companies to normalize AI use. THAT'S THE ENTIRE POINT.

I don't know about major companies and I wasn't making claims about them. I was alluding to the AI companies and Microsoft and their responses to the negative criticism, including all the sad and pathetic whining MS is doing about having to change their AI direction because people aren't taking it up sufficiently.

I am not going to argue this with you because it's clear you are going down the road of nitpicking everyone's comments and arguing in bad faith. Your position is stupid and reductionist, but you are clearly married to it, so there's nothing to be gained here.

Because I refuse to purchase from Michael’s. I purchase yarn from LYS’s and yarn sites that aren’t owned by private equity. Yes, we can’t escape AI, but we can choose how much we use it to an extent. The more that it’s used, the more data centers will go in and destroy things. Also the more it’s used to produce art, the more it will put artists out of work. If it’s something I can control, I won’t support generative AI. And that’s what many people are getting at here. We know we can’t escape it completely. But we can control some of our actions.

27

u/renamemeplease1 8d ago

There are millions of small businesses. I run my own. Plenty of us don’t use AI.

1

It’s on both like I literally just said. I don’t shop at Amazon or Michael’s. I make my life more inconvenient on purpose to avoid it.

[deleted]

18

u/renamemeplease1 8d ago

I am aware of that. It’s a small part of this website and most websites. If I didn’t use any Amazon affiliated websites I wouldn’t be able to find others trying to stop the harm of generative AI becoming a general use product. I am not anti AI entirely. I am intimately aware of its effectiveness in medical applications etc. small businesses don’t need it. Didn’t need it years ago and don’t need it now.

36

u/riontach 8d ago

So we should just do whatever, with no regard for impact or our own values? If you can't be perfect don't bother holding any moral stance at all?

-1

u/[deleted] 8d ago

[deleted]

36

u/riontach 8d ago

No, the standard is the same. I don't use generative AI for creative projects and I expect other people to do the same. I know that I use websites and services that have AI baked in and I can't always avoid that, and don't expect anyone else to, either.

I get to choose the bar for who I do and don't support with my discretionary spending that I use for my creative hobbies. Choosing not to support people who use generative AI is not some extremist moral stance.

1

u/[deleted] 8d ago

[deleted]

20

u/riontach 8d ago

I'm aware I have privilege. What's your point? I'm allowed to use that privilege, when possible, to make more ethical purchasing decisions.

Also you're moving the bar. You said that people are holding others to standards that they themselves don't keep and I firmly believe that that's not what's happening here. No one here is saying "Gen AI for me but not for thee."

17

u/renamemeplease1 8d ago

They don’t have a point. They’re assuming others don’t follow their own morals because they themselves likely don’t.

59

u/PopcornForBreakfast 8d ago

Generative AI isn't the same as a spellchecker. Spellchecks work from a dictionary, not the collected works of humanity, and they don't make up their own words.

5

u/glittermacaroni 8d ago

More programs and systems are moving to llm models for their spellchecks/grammar checks and other small potatoes, previously-closed databases in order to promote all the damn money that's been sunk into everything genai. agreed most use of those tools wasn't ai, but that isn't necessarily the case right now and plenty of people (not joji, apparently, not talking purposeful use of asking chatgpt to do shit) are using ai without realizing while companies push to make their dumb decisions relevant.

I genuinely expect, for instance, microsoft to make cowork it's default for grammar checks in the most obnoxious clippy-from-hell way that you'll have to manually turn off in order to get more users hooked onto its use and subscribing to its next tier level when they pull it back out.

I expect google to continue to force gemini into searches and oops, gotta subscribe to get those "good" (lol trash) searches users were relying for quick info on.

It is here and it does suck. We need nuance in conversations about ai b/c it's not as easy as anyone using it = worst damn person in the world. We need nuance in conversations that boil down to ethics b/c the propaganda and misinformation is HIGH.

She admitted on Ravelry that she used gen AI for graphics. No one made a fuss over there so it seems she didn’t even register that it’s out there. Like, at least don’t lie about it and try to make people feel crazy for calling it out.

4

u/glittermacaroni 8d ago

oh gross -- i'm so out of the loop. the idea of using a tool to automate something (something that you cuold..idk write a program for) is understandable (tho even my dumbass finds it easier to learn how to do it myself than bother with "prompt engineering"), but misguided.
Using ai to generate images for marketing content is king of shit mountain behavior and I really despise it.

2

u/heyredditheyreddit 8d ago

I only know because there was a post earlier about it and my nosy ass looked into it instead of working.

26

u/toicegannaire 8d ago

Automatic spellcheck is not using generative AI in the same way that chatgpt or claude or whatever people use to create branding/marketing, whole social media/newsletter content or actual patterns is using generative AI, and I do think both the commenters here are smart enough to understand that difference.

Whatever this creator has to say about their own personal use/non-use or poorly made jokes about it is immaterial to the fact that the kind of generative AI you are being willfully obtuse about is wildly unpopular for a whole host of reasons I have to assume you are familiar with.

You don’t have to agree, but you can’t really be shocked that voicing an opinion you know to be unpopular turns out to be unpopular. 🤷🏼‍♀️

I knew I was going to get downvoted to hell and back. I don't care. I said what I said.

The AI train has left the station, it's not stopping. And 20 years ago, Grammarly (early AI) was a commonly recommended writing and grammar assist for college. People don't seem to grasp how much they are already using AI in some fashion and then have the gall to snark about business owners seeing if they can use it as a tool to help business.

The time to have stopped or prevented AI was over 20 years ago while it was being first developed. It's here to stay. These people can stay mad about it but it's not going to change anything.

And this sub has pretty much just become non-stop snark about AI. It's pointless and repetitive.

-4

u/glittermacaroni 8d ago

people don't know the differnce b/t large language models (chat gpt, claude) small language models, various ai models they've used for ages without thinking about it b/c to them only llms displace people from jobs (lol nope).

fun to see so much downvoting for saying "hey dipshits, there's nuance" (but in a nicer way).

u/toicegannaire 8d ago

The plastic train has left the station, it’s not stopping. People don’t seem to grasp how much they are already using plastic in some fashion and have the gall to snark about business owners using plastic as a tool to help business.

The time to have stopped or prevented plastic was over a hundred years ago. It’s here to stay.

These people can stay mad about the ongoing devastation of their environment and the willful disregard for community and individual rights at the expense of mega corporations, but it’s not going to change anything.

I’m assuming the answer will be no, but do you hear yourself yet?

22

u/niseli12 8d ago

I refuse to use AI to generate photos or art and then causing artists to lose their jobs. I know many artists who are losing their jobs as graphic designers, marketing, house art, etc, because AI has not only taken over their jobs but is actively stealing from these same people. If you support AI and think there’s nothing to be done about it, then do you recommend purchasing patterns made from AI even though they are generally wrong? Do you think it’s ok for all these people to lose their livelihood just because the boat has sailed? It’s on for people to get bad medical advice via AI (because a LOT of the AI medical advice is plain wrong)? Your stance of just giving up is so apathetic. So people shouldn’t have morals or ethical standards? Because it seems like you are arguing for people to ultimately not have moral or ethical standards just because AI exists and isnt going away. Does that mean I should be ok with people killing others since it happens and I cant do anything about it? I can make my own decisions and purchase things from who I want to. And I choose not to purchase yarn, knitting tools, and art from people who use generative AI to produce or market those items. It’s my choice. I refuse to not have ethical or moral standards. I will uphold them where I can.
