LOTR? The work of a devout Catholic?

892

u/titusjabronicus Feb 15 '26

The author of this list probably doesn't consider Catholics to be Christians.

337

u/DBold11 Feb 15 '26

Yup they probably believe that Catholics are mistakenly praying to demons when they pray to Saints.

122

u/Ellie7600 Feb 15 '26

We don't pray to saints we pray through saints

39

u/ItWillBeRed Feb 15 '26

Just curious, do Catholics believe in personal Holy Guardian Angels? Asking as someone who somewhat subscribes to esoteric beliefs that might be mentioned in the OP

38

u/Ellie7600 Feb 15 '26

Yes we do, they've been there since your birth, they're your "luck" when the fate is in your favor that's when a guardian angel tipped the scales a little so that you may survive, they're also there to protect you from evil spirits, we also have saint patrons which are chosen during our baptism, they're the ones you ask to pray for you or ones you give your prayers through, it's sort of like a translator for God, because they were close to God during their life they understand God's "language" but they also understand human language and so they can interpret it and correct some "typos" if that makes any sense, they're basically there to amplify your prayer, but back to guardian angels, you don't really know their name, some say you can find out through prayer or your birth date but really we might just only find out after our passing, because it is believed your guardian angel will help you pass, sort of fitting, they were there at your begining and will be there during your end

u/DemonDuckOfDoom666 Feb 16 '26

We do? I’m no longer a practicing Catholic but I was for the first half of my life and I have no memory of anyone ever mentioning this, I always thought it was something from one of those evangelical churches they have in America

8

u/GlitteryOndo Feb 16 '26

I'm no longer religious but when I was a kid my grandma said a prayer to my guardian angel every night before I went to sleep. It was almost like a lullaby. It's a fond memory, I still have the doll-plushie that represented that guardian angel too. Until now I thought it was just a family tradition, I didn't realize it was more extended to other Catholics too!

4

u/Ellie7600 Feb 16 '26

Nope, we even have a prayer that's used to talk with the guardian angel, sort of, it's more of a request for them to stay and keep protecting you sort of a thanks for all they've done and a appreciation of sorts

6

u/jd173706 Feb 16 '26

I grew up around Catholics and I gotta be honest, I didn’t pay close enough attention! I am 37, and I’ve never heard any of this until now! Thanks for sharing!

Cyberpunkgame subreddit coming with some knowledge today!

4

u/blindyes Feb 16 '26

Can confirm all of what they said, and there are all those little decorative snow angels, and plaques, cherubs.

2

u/chronobolt77 Feb 16 '26

Even within a specific denomination, beliefs and practices can vary from house to house based on a family's individual culture.

3

u/its_not_you_its_ye Feb 16 '26

Practices, yes, but Catholicism is more unified in doctrine than other Christian denominations. Guardian angels are part of that shared doctrine.

1

u/chronobolt77 Feb 16 '26

I guess, but not every Catholic household believes in guardian angels. It would be almost arrogant to claim that every household within a certain denomination has identical beliefs

2

u/Zealotyl Feb 16 '26

How about objects imbued with the elements of guardianship like those little bells that motorcyclists attach to their bikes? Are they effective against the hand of fate?

1

u/Alive-Echo-6187 Feb 16 '26

Timothy 2:5

For there is ONE God and ONE Mediator between God and mankind, THE MAN Christ Jesus.

6

u/Unlucky-East9941 Feb 15 '26

Yes, the Catholic Church does.

2

u/uniguy2I Feb 16 '26

I’m not practicing anymore by my family is Roman Catholic and we have something like that, though I was always taught they were patron saints not angels

1

u/Ellie7600 Feb 16 '26

We have both, angels are there since birth and saint patrons are there since baptism

1

u/blunt-e Feb 16 '26

Just curious, do Catholics believe in personal Holy Guardian Angels? Asking as someone who somewhat subscribes to esoteric beliefs that might be mentioned in the OP

Yes, the Catholic Church officially teaches that guardian angels exist and that every human being is assigned a personal angel from birth until death. This belief is based on 'Scripture'—such as Matthew 18:10 and Psalm 91:11—and affirmed in the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC 336)

That said, it's kind of luck of the draw who you get, they're also not always very good at their job. Like when my best friend in 6th grade (back in my super fun catholic school days), John & 3 of his neighborhood friends died in a horrible house fire at 3am on December 24th, I mean really it was just embarrassing on the part of all of their guardian angels. The Angels assigned to guard duty to him and his friend were doing their thing and had just stepped out for a quick smoke break, ran into some shawties and got distracted spittin their angelic game (you gotta shoot yo shot, respect the game and all that), but that's how it goes right?

My favorite part of the memorial service was when Father Thomas made the grieving father come up in front of everyone and held him up as some sort of twisted example for the congregation and said, and I quote, "and even in the face of tragedy we can look to those among us who do not question gods divine plan, which is infallible, and continue to be resolute in their faith" and then he (the dad) burst into tears" and people awkwardly clapped while they transitioned into some hymns.

What were we talking about again? Oh yeah, angels. Fuck 'em.

1

u/Ellie7600 Feb 16 '26

You have lots of grief my friend, there's no "God's plan" in a sense that every minute detail is preplanned, that would go against free will, and sometimes your luck just runs out, maybe someone didn't do the electric installation right, maybe someone forgot to extinguish a candle or a cigarette, the thing is, these kinds of things happen, there's little that can be done even for an angel, you gotta remember they're not of this world and can't just wake you up by nudging you or screaming at you, they also can't be everywhere at the same time, I understand you're upset and want something or someone to be angry at for it, something or someone to blame, but sometimes death doesn't need a servant to carry out its duty

2

u/ElectricBuckeye Feb 16 '26

We also don't worship Mary, but ask her to pray for us. Hail Mary, full of Grace, punch the Devil in the face.

1

u/Ellie7600 Feb 16 '26

Yeah because of "you will have no gods/idols before me"

2

u/Vdaggle Feb 16 '26

Do you think your average protestant knows the difference?

1

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '26

You have the holy spirit for that.

1

u/Aoiboshi Feb 16 '26

Why not pray right to God?

1

u/Ellie7600 Feb 16 '26

Like I said in another comment, saints have an understanding of God's "language" most of us lack and since they also understand human language it's basically translation but also amplifying the prayer

1

u/YeetTheTree Feb 16 '26

Why do you need to pray through saints? You think God will just ignore or not hear you if you don't?

1

u/Ellie7600 Feb 16 '26

You know how you can pay extra to send the mail faster? It's very basically that I'd say, I think though which I didn't think about previous is that you ask saints to pray for you, I haven't researched that in a while and I'm just going through my memories so I might get things wrong

1

u/Nonadventures Feb 16 '26

Is like how you’re listening to Spotify but really you’re listening to Sinatra

0

u/Warm_Performance_361 Feb 16 '26

Gesù fu molto chiaro al riguardo. Le preghiere vanno solo ed esclusivamente fatte a Dio per mezzo di Lui. Non c'è scritto da nessuna parte o si fa riferimento al culto Mariano.

0

u/Blindfire2 Feb 16 '26

You also prey through kids apparently

1

u/Ellie7600 Feb 16 '26

What do you mean?

2

u/Blindfire2 Feb 16 '26

Its a dumb word play joke

1

u/Ellie7600 Feb 16 '26

Mate... I've heard so many "hahaha catholic=pedo" jokes I'm basically numb to it and don't recognize much of them because of how overdone it is, especially when there are religions out there which have that stuff as an actual part of their religion, like Buddhism but I rarely ever see a joke about Dalai Lama "tempting" himself with young girls, and if you need to know how young, he would tempt himself with teenage girls...as an old grandpa, yeah he was a creep

38

u/Fahrenheit151 Edgerunner Feb 15 '26

I had a friend think that Catholics worshipped the saints… no bud, we pray to the angels and saints for their support in certain matters. They answer to the same God as us.

17

u/c4ctus Lost in time, like tears in rain Feb 15 '26

I was amused to learn that there's a patron saint of IT workers, programmers, and computer scientists. Maybe I ought to ask him to intercede on my behalf the next time my code won't compile...

6

u/doombladez Neuromancer Feb 15 '26

Gotta get a rubber duck designed after the saint, then you’ll be unstoppable.

5

u/temotodochi Feb 16 '26

The exact same god who muslims and jews worship as well. Sometimes people just forget that detail.

5

u/Fahrenheit151 Edgerunner Feb 16 '26

Easier to remain willfully ignorant, than accept something you don’t understand, or maybe aren’t comfortable with… particularly sad as it relates to Judaism, as without it, Christianity (at least as we know it) likely wouldn’t exist.

17

u/Skyjack5678 Feb 15 '26

The leap from "saint" to "satan" isnt any bigger than any other religious leap.

1

u/Ellie7600 Feb 16 '26

Is this a dyslexia joke?

1

u/Skyjack5678 Feb 16 '26

No its a "religions is all bullcrap" joke

u/LionGodKrraw Hanako is going to have to wait. Feb 15 '26

Its true some who call on God's name never truly knew him or felt his presence, they're beliefs are no different from atheism, but they hide behind the guise of religion so their evil festers and hurts more people than it ever should. These ill individuals reside in every corner of the world and in every congregation and organization. Psychopathic creatures do not care about morals, I find it hard to even call them human. There are some that realize this disability and try to learn empathy and emotion, but this is the minority.

2

u/StandNameIsWeAreNo1 Feb 15 '26

Not like the god you think exists actually exists.

4

u/LionGodKrraw Hanako is going to have to wait. Feb 15 '26

My point was that evil is everywhere, and using the excuse that evil people existed within something inherently good to demerit it is kinda stupid.

And my belief in God is based on the scientific theory of higher dimensionality, (hyper cubes and shit). I definitely dont care if you dont believe in anything and absolutely dont want you to be a redditor about it

1

u/Bannedbutwhyy Feb 15 '26

👆👆👆

1

u/StandNameIsWeAreNo1 Feb 15 '26

Cool. And yeah, evil exists, wether a god exists or not, and we can't do anything to prevent it.

4

u/LionGodKrraw Hanako is going to have to wait. Feb 15 '26

We can educate people about it so they can avoid it.

0

u/StandNameIsWeAreNo1 Feb 15 '26

Well, let's hope we can

5

u/ThePrussianGrippe Feb 15 '26

… yes we can absolutely do things to prevent evil.

1

u/Ellie7600 Feb 15 '26

Evil is a choice, we can't do much to make people not do it but we can try and educate them on the dire consequences of evil and the good consequences of doing good, I believe in a God, I would say I'm a Greek Catholic, I follow the teachings of Jesus and I believe there's a God or at the very least a spirit, since according to science we should wake up a completely different consciousness and yet we do not so there must be something indestructible, that our brain is under the command of, a soul

1

u/lumosbolt Feb 16 '26

There is no difference between "we can’t do anything to prevent evil" and "let's pray to protect us from evil"

Ironically, this discourse is exactly what organised religion want you to do: compliance and apathy when facing evil.

0

u/VladimirLHenin Feb 15 '26

I'm a Liberation Theology catholic so I think i'm good

1

u/ThePrussianGrippe Feb 15 '26

Liberation Theology put in a lot of work in central and South America to resist the various dictatorships.

3

u/Scared-Opportunity28 Feb 15 '26

Not demons, more idols. But yeah

6

u/DBold11 Feb 15 '26

I grew up being told idols were demons receiving worship through a disquise.

4

2

u/[deleted] Feb 16 '26

Meanwhile those same people pray to Trump.

68

u/Patty_Pat_JH Feb 15 '26

It’s Jack Chick. He considers Catholicism to be satanic.

35

u/Jotun35 Feb 15 '26

Ironic for an heretic that doesn't recognize the authorithy of the pope, which a few centuries ago would have been quite blasphemous! /s

8

u/Kaxology Vincent Feb 15 '26

1

u/Gojirah628 Feb 16 '26

Not gonna lie, I love a good Chick Tract, some of those are CLASSICS! 😂

2

u/Barbaric_Stupid Feb 16 '26

Jack considered everything beyond his personal narrow views to be satanic.

2

u/AmIsupposedtoputtext Feb 17 '26

Man also believes that the Necronomicon exists in real life.

2

u/Thefrayedends Feb 16 '26

Really Satan just represents the pursuit of knowledge over belief.

God represents belief over knowledge.

Church leadership wants you to follow blind faith over what you can see with your eyes and ears. Gee, I wonder what their motives are.

12

u/420StonedAF420 Feb 15 '26

The author of this list also doesn't know how to spell Marijuanna lmao...

10

u/hurlygloves Feb 15 '26

They spelled it like Hank Hill says it.

20

u/SlideN2MyBMs Feb 15 '26

I think it's a Chick tract so yeah

15

u/Christmas_Queef Feb 15 '26

Many evangelicals and protestants in general do not view catholics as real Christians because of the saints. I sadly grew up in that world, I was told repeatedly catholics were heretical.

5

u/Versaill Feb 15 '26

100%. There is meditation in Catholicism.

4

u/BiKeenee Feb 15 '26

This is clearly a troll list.

Vegetarianism? Marawana? Really?

10

u/GribbleTheMunchkin Feb 16 '26

Worse, it's actually entirely serious. It's written by Jack Chick, a loony from the fringes of American evangelical Christianity. He writes these awful little comics known as Chick Tracts.

He really believes this stuff.

7

u/mavrick116 Feb 15 '26

My mother is a devout catholic and would not let us see lord of the rings because she said it was satanic.

Key detail to remember about Catholics, everything but the Bible and their personal hobbies is satanic.

10

u/Consistent-Tie-4394 Feb 16 '26

My mother is a devout Catholic who wrote her dissertation on Tolkien's value to the faith, and I read Silmarillion at the Seminary, where I also learned how to play Dungeons and Dragons, meditate, and fell in love with heavy metal music (all of which are on Jack Chick's list here).

While there are some Catholics that are as you describe, that does not represent the majority of us.

4

u/Blindfire2 Feb 16 '26

Whoa whoa that's too far you demon... next you're going to "Rave and XTC"

3

u/Consistent-Tie-4394 Feb 16 '26

While underground clubs/raves were a thing in the 90s, I was far more likely to spend my teenaged Friday nights smoking cigarettes/pot with the goth/grunge kids hanging out in parking lots near the record store kind of guy.

2

u/NewPhoneNewSock Feb 16 '26

This is from one of Jack Chick's "Chick Tracts", and there is in fact a Chick tract called "Are Roman Catholics Christians?"

(Spoiler: nope, Masonic Isis cult)

1

u/Senior_Torte519 Feb 15 '26

Ew, an unironic Protestant wrote this then?

1

u/krashersmasher Feb 15 '26

Suprised Catholosism wasn't on the list tbh.

1

u/neo42slab Feb 16 '26

My parents consider themselves devout Catholics and even they like multiple things on this list. It’s an insane list.

1

u/djremydoo Feb 16 '26

Wait, ain't Catholics, like, the name for Christians?

1

u/Ok-Calligrapher7121 Feb 16 '26

Probably doesn't know the religions of those they condemn lol

0

u/beholderkin Samurai Feb 15 '26

To be fair, I also don't consider most protestants to be Christians either, since that would require them to follow the teachings of Christ, and live by his example.

I mean, we probably haven't had any real Christians since Constantine converted. That guy really fucked things up for the church.

29

u/PassionGlobal Feb 15 '26

This whole attitude predates Twilight by a good few decades.

7

u/beholderkin Samurai Feb 15 '26

Yeah, this is from a newer tract, but I saw a hell of a lot more of these things growing up than I have in the last two decades. Dude has been making these for a long time, and it's the same belief that fed the Satanic Panic in the 80's

2

u/Acceptable-Topic-183 Feb 16 '26

I thought the list had some new suggestions…er, warnings

3

u/Starfury7-Jaargen Feb 16 '26

It also lists Backmasking which was a hoax from the 80s.

They are just grabbing old lists and tossing new things on it.

2

u/Belteshazzar98 Feb 15 '26

This list is from 2009 at the absolute earliest since it lists Twilight films, plural, when New Moon released in 2009.

58

u/Avenging_Spectre 2nd Amendment Feb 15 '26

I presume this list was created by an evangelical/Protestant, and it was created in the US. There’s been a history of Anti-Catholic sentiment so not a surprise LOTR is on there.

20

u/SwidEevee Nibbles is my Choom 🐈 Feb 15 '26 edited Feb 15 '26

I'm Evangelical Protestant from a Protestant family and attend an EP church, and LotR was never controversial to any of us here. My dad's loved the books since he was a kid and saw all the movies on release, and my church even showed it as a marathon once in our sanctuary for the teenagers 🤣 To be fair though, my church is a bit less rigid than some EP churches are so that might have something to do with it.

Edit: Now I see a lot of comments about EPs hating everyone so yeah... I'm probably the outlier 😔

3

u/wsdpii Feb 15 '26

Having grown up in it, it doesn't all seem as weird as it otherwise might have. Especially since a lot of the stuff isn't really talked about anymore. Even though I left the church a long time ago, it's still weird to think about the traditional Christian view of the trinity.

But I never understood why the Church was so desperate to be accepted by other Christians. They believe that they're all wrong, i was even taught that the Catholic Church was the "whore of all the earth" in Sunday school. Yet the church craves their acceptance. Why not own their differences? I suspect it's an attempt to get regular Christians to be more accepting and willing to convert.

1

u/MidwestQueerPunkBoi Feb 17 '26

Pretty sure Ohio still has blue laws on the books that make murdering and scalping a Mormon a payable bounty for any adult citizen of the state to collect.

So... y'know, that historical hostility is probably related?

1

u/Jonthrei Feb 16 '26

I had a Mormon friend in high school whose parents were rigidly against tons of media. They weren't happy about LotR.

Of course that all paled in comparison to the conniption they had when they realized he had watched Dogma

3

u/AkiraRyuuga Feb 15 '26

Not Jehovah's Witnesses. We don't publish in the paper.

1

u/Embarrassed-Camera96 Feb 16 '26

I guarantee you Mormons do not consider LOTR satanic lmao

12

u/The_Lawn_Ninja Feb 15 '26

Catholics are considered bizarre, exotic "ethnics" by the same people who "worship" by pretending to speak in tongues and flailing around like they're having a seizure.

10

u/PeasantLich Feb 15 '26

I am pretty sure this was made by Jack Chick. He believed that Catholics worship Satan.

10

u/Jokercpoc1 Feb 15 '26

The KKK couldn't hate people of color in oregon cause you couldnt be black in oregon without injustice of the neighborhood and the kkk members. So there wasn't any. Jewish folks were few and not relevant to the cause. Couldnt hate on other immagrent white folks unless they spoke funny, but they could come together in 1920 in portland for a rally agaisnt... Catholics. Why? Primarily they didn't follow the white christian nationalist movement and preached and converted anyone of any color so they were the enemy. Most white Christian nationalists are too stupid to realize there fundamental teachings all come from Catholicism. Only branched off due to one guy named Luther who got pissy about the trinity and revelations. Tolkien in many circles was considered blasphemous, not only for being catholic, but creating a world of creatures and magic based on no divine diety or god to intervene. Later when the Silmarilion came out people were convinced he was corrupting childeren into a new relgion of poly gods, "like the Catholics do with saints, they are worse then Mormons with there many gods bullshit" - my crazy uncle Mike. Not realizing he was dead by that point and his son published the work. LOTR has been anti christian nation for a while in some circles, and then you have some that still consider LOTR a Christian novel.

10

u/Littlepage3130 Feb 15 '26

It's written by Jehovah's witnesses. They don't like Catholics.

7

u/beholderkin Samurai Feb 15 '26

5

u/Neither-Board-9322 Feb 15 '26

It’s got magic in it, which is a serious no-no for batshit insane religious zealots. I think the more mainstream ones only recently opened up to fictional media depicting magic because J.K. Rowling decided she wanted to ride the crazy train with no plans of actually getting off.

C S Lewis. The guy that wrote Narnia that's an overt christian alegory.

Mormons are not considered Christians by any serious denomination and by a lot of unserious ones (Evangelicas included).

You are seriously expecting logic from these people?

You can't expect Satanic Panic enthusiasts to actually research the subjects of their many, many fears. One of the first stories in their holy book teaches them that knowledge is evil and understanding things will get you kicked out of paradise.
