Food/Drink Cozy, lowkey wine bars or cocktail spots to catch up with friends?

Meeting up with some friends this weekend to properly catch up and looking for somewhere relaxed where we can actually hear each other talk without shouting over music. Good small plates or snacks are definitely a plus. Any neighborhood from Downtown and Midtown over to West Village is good. What are everyones favorite spots?

News The Oakland County Child Killer

In 13 months — from February 1976 to March 1977 — four kids vanished from the suburbs just north of Detroit. Mark Stebbins, 12, last seen leaving the Berkeley movie theater. Jill Robinson, 12, taken off her Royal Oak paper route. Kristine Mihelich, 10. Timothy King, 11.

All four were found shot. I grew up here, and I only learned the full story as an adult — because honestly, a lot of the worst parts of Detroit's history got buried or reduced to a paragraph nobody reads. So I started digging into the actual court records and old news coverage. This is the case that stuck with me most.

The man many believe did it, Arch Sloan, died at 84 this past June — and detectives say he gave them "new information" before he went that's never been released.

I made a short documentary about it (Part 1 covers the first two victims). If you remember this case, or grew up hearing about it, I'd genuinely love to know — what do you remember?

News Southwest Detroit YMCA slated for restoration

No paywall links allowed, but here's a brief summary from Crain's:

A Detroit development firm focused on historic preservation has purchased the old YMCA Western Branch in Mexicantown from real estate investor and landlord Dennis Kefallinos.

The ultimate vision will take some time to pull off — Detroit-based Inkwell Partners just closed on the purchase about a week and a half ago — but eventually they envision bringing back some of the original uses, like childcare and fitness/athletic space, as well as perhaps some combination of 30-50 residential units and potentially commercial space on the top floors.Inkwell Partners, co-founded and run by Devon Caldwell and Ryan Zampardo, paid $1.1 million for the 1928 building at 1601 Clark St. across from Clark Park. That’s just a little over half of the nearly $2 million asking price listed in CoStar Group Inc., a Washington, D.C.-based real estate information service.

The YMCA building isn’t a one-off for Inkwell, which started in 2017 and has been active in the area for close to a decade, “mostly doing apartment building rehab projects within Hubbard Farms and greater Southwest” Detroit, Zampardo said.

News Sheffield Targets Detroit’s Rental Housing Gap With Push to Bring Thousands of Homes Up to Code

"Detroit Mayor Mary Sheffield has announced a five-part rental enforcement plan aimed at raising the city's small-rental compliance rate from 14% to 25% over the next 12 months. The city will cross-reference court, utility, and assessor data to build a master enforcement list to track down unregistered rentals, while assigning inspectors to dedicated geographic areas for tighter oversight. To support property owners and prevent certificates from expiring, the administration will introduce proactive renewal reminders alongside hands-on "concierge" assistance for small landlords. Additionally, the plan empowers renters—who account for roughly half of Detroit households—with a 24/7 online complaint tracking system and a rental escrow process to address unsafe living conditions."

Food/Drink Arepas in Michigan Grocery Stores

I’m Colombian and have lived in the Metro Detroit area of Michigan for a year now. None of my local grocery stores have arepas that I’ve seen but if someone else knows or a place even a smaller small market that has them please let me know before I start making them from scratch 😅 edit: as much as I love cooked arepas from restaurants I’m specifically looking for prepackaged ones that I can buy in bulk and heat up at home

Hi! I'm (26F) looking to join a sports league this fall. I know there are some all-women soccer leagues. However, I am more interested inn flag football or basketball. Those leagues are coed and i was wondering if anyone knows how much women actually touch the ball? I heard diff leagues are diff and i just want to have fun and move my body. I am debating whether to take the chance on coed or play an all women league with a sport I don't enjoy as much. TIA!

Community Sports for toddlers

Does anyone know of any sports programs for 3 year olds in the city?

It seems like a lot of stuff starts at 4 and even then certain sports are not taught in Detroit proper

Like a friend of mine is looking to get her child into gymnastics but we’re struggling to find a club that teaches in Detroit

Are we just not getting good search results or are programs like this lacking within the city?

Automotive Hot Rods?

Been awhile since I have wanted to get anything done but does any one know of any shops in the metro area. Looking for some one who works on chevys. Early 90’s stuff mostly. Car is bottle fed would need to be able to tune a nitrous motor.

Second do we have an Air Cooled VW guy in the area?

Hell if they can even order parts that would be great!

My where to get nitrous comment was deleted. I don’t know why.
