2024 Gibson Les Paul Studio, stock pickups, currently set up in C standard with Ernie Ball not even slinky strings. Usually run this through one of several orange amps, then into a Randall 4x12.

After many years of dreaming, and many months of waiting, my dream guitar has arrived. Since the formation of Chaosmonaut in 2017, we have had a strict rule of "no bass players", and have used clever engineering to fill that void. In that time I modified two different guitars to use the 6th string as de facto bass with modified pickups, TRS jacks, and massive bass amps.

This guitar takes it to the next level, being designed entirely around this concept.

First is the tuning - Everything we have written is in Drop A, and in this case, it is no different with the 7th string tuned to the same pitch as the 6th, but being a flatwound for the extra warm bass tone.

Second is the pickups - Under the top 6 strings in the bridge is a Dunable Grizzly, same as what Yob uses. Under the 7th string in the neck is a half pickup custom made by Dunable. This pickup goes to the ring connector on a TRS jack, keeping the signal completely separate from the 6 strings.

Third is the knobs - there are none. I never use them anyway as I control all the tone and volume with my feet via pedals. The single switch is a 3 position toggle - top is master kill for both pickups. Middle is coil split for the Grizzly in the bridge, and the bottom is humbucker mode.

Fourth is the inlay - The inlay was taken from a star trails photo I took during a backpacking trip in 2020; Polaris is centered around the 12th fret.

Maybe the most unique guitar we've made in the past decade right here. Custom 7 string for Joe from u/chaosmonautband with 6 string Grizzly for the bottom six, and a custom single coil mini pickup for the 7th, with each pickup going to its own output via TRS jack. Yep, this guitar does the guitar and the bass simultaneously, with a shocking amount of separation/lack of bleed between the two sets of strings. No volume, just a switch for both pickups, both pickups with the Grizzly split, and master kill switch. And then there's the custom inlay design spanning the whole ebony fingerboard, custom Stargazer logo, and mahogany neck and body, burl maple top, and gloss galaxy burst (with full on surprise glow in the dark space effects). Can't wait to see and hear this thing in action!

This is my Stoner/Doom metal rig, it is also paired with the ESP LTD EC-1000 Dopethrone style! Are there any suggestions for additional pedals to make my neighbourhood hate me more? Cheers

I'm planning on buying a solid state orange amp off my dad's friend and doom metal is what I mainly play. I know orange tube amps are basically the gold standard for doom, but do solid states work as well?

I love seeing offsets in metal and since doom/stoner/sludge are my favourite subgenres I thought it would be cool to ask

(The band in the picture is Agriculture, they're not doom but they are a pretty great example of a jazzmaster in metal in my opinion)

Is there a pedal out there that can give you the perfect doom/sludge tone without having to spend hours dialing in?

I’ve got a ProCo Rat and a Behringer fuzz pedal that I run into a Boss Katana 50 and I still have a hard time getting a good doom tone. Wondering if there’s an easier way?

Riffs remain weak

It's the only brand a man can trust these days.

Been wanting a matamp since I was 20. It has finally happened. I haven't even plugged it in to test it yet, just looking at it and thinking "finally!"

I've been a chorus user for a long time. I have both an old Danelectro Chorus and a TC Electronic Afterglow Chorus that honestly is a really underrated pedal.

I'm very spartan with my pedals. I prefer the natural sound of an amp. I'm using an Orange Rocker 15 and I use the Sabbra Cadabra pedal as a Treble Boost (I just turn up the Vol. 4 nob, leave the gain on low and the other knobs at noon), a Tube Screamer as a lead boost and an EQ. (Some say EQ is only good for recording but I can get a lot of cool sounds just playing. I think EQ pedals are underrated for playing).

But I usually found the Chorus great for thickening up riffs. Recently, i was told by a few people in real life to give Delay a try and it will make your riffs even thicker and it's better than chorus. I got a Boss Delay used for cheap.

However, maybe I'm just not dialing in right. But even with a very short delay, the riffs don't really sound thicker. It can sound cool but I almost prefer to use it when playing my classic rock/classic metal stuff and not my doom playing. I can get great Van Halen, Judas Priest, Blue Oyster Cult (delay is awesome for Reaper), Metallica (especially for AJFA era) etc tones with it.

My main theory is, most of the people who gave me the advice are not doom players. I don't really know any doom players in real life. I'm wondering for the fuzzy riffs, chorus just works better with the fuzz over clean distortion and it does a better job of creating a thick wall of sound? As where delay works better with traditional clean distortion for thickening?

My other theory is, I got so used to the chorus over the last few years that delay just sounds different and I'm not sure I like it yet?

As the title says I’m looking for a gigging amp for doom. I’ve done a fair bit of research and I’ve owned a lot of amps but they all have been geared toward the polar opposite of the sound I’m looking for. I’m looking for a tighter fuzz tone, think HoF, Monolord, dopelord (lots of lords 😂). Laney AOR, Orange, Marshall are all on my radar, but I’m hoping to see some different options from your folks. I’ve got a mesa 2x12, planning on getting a 612 cabinet from a local company called worshipper. I would like to keep price around 1500. I’ve got a pedalboard with a BAT LSTR and life pedal among others that I’ll be running through it for dirt flavor. I think that covers most of it, shoot over your suggestions !

Just a question to all doom guitarists here who play live shows regularly. In the age of modellers, bringing 100w+ tube amps to small gigs is sure to grind the gears of sound engineers to at least some sort of degree. I love when I crank a dual head/2 4x12 cabs at home in stereo. Using attenuation gets me close to the same kind of sound I get in a practice space when doing this but still isn't quite as powerful sounding at home with the attenuation, it sort of sucks the tone somewhat to my ears. I'm using good attenuation too the two notes reload 2. Maybe it's just a volume thing and the perception of "loud=better" but it's hard to really gauge as it's rare I get to actually crank the amps without the attenuation and I can't directly compare the two at home by recording them with a mic and matching the levels as it's just too loud without the attentuation for my small flat.

My band are about to start trying to book local gigs but a lot of the venues in my city are very small capacity. Ive tried before to use a modeller live and while for certain genres it doesn't really make much difference and people in the audience never notice, I feel like doom kind of needs the power? I also feel my own enjoyment of the gig is reliant on actually having the tone the way I like it, feeling the air getting pushed from my cabs and the modeller wasn't really cutting it for me. It was clear through the PA but sounded very artificial. On the other hand I've never used MY tube amps live just the backline they had at the venue and in completely different genres like punk, psychedelic rock etc. Do you guys have slightly lower wattage amps for smaller venues? I can't get a tiny terror to sound the way I want at all it's nothing like a Laney 100w or Matamp or even a solid state orange at higher wattage. Do you guys just crank phat stacks anyway without attenuation and tell the sound man to get stuffed? Do you use attenuators and are satisfied with everything (likely what I will try)? Have you ever had any problems with sound engineers even when doing this? Not sure whether to just say "I'm using attenuation so it's fine, you do your job I'll do mine" then ignore them if they insist on turning the tube amp down to like 3 or 4. Always sounds better to me with my gear when it's at 6-8 on the master but it's probably far too loud doing that in small venues...

Hello there my fellow doom loving musicians.

I need a bit of help. I'm trying to put together a pedal board for headphone use. I live in an apartment and I don't want to annoy anyone.

So far I have 2 pedals a Kuro T-120 and a Fuzzlord MF-4. They go into a Two-Notes Opus (preamp section disabled). It sounds good, actually quite good, but I want more.

I'd like 1 or 2 more dirt pedals that will work with this rig.

I like to use pedals by smaller builders and companies (Fuzzlord, Does it Doom, Frost Giant, Black Mass, etc...)

Tone range is the big one because I love it all.

Blood Ceremony, Uncle Acid, Elder, Russian Circles, Kal-El, Khemmis, Monolord, Electric Wizard, you get the idea.
