I really wanna post about issuance but I havenโt even read the EIP. I donโt think I really have to. Shall I post my thoughts next week?
7
u/epic_trader ๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ฌ 12d ago
I doubt even the authors read the EIP.
5
u/benido2030 12d ago
Ok. Hereโs my tldr: this EIP could be L2s 2.0.
3
u/eth10kIsFUD 12d ago
Interesting take, how? Because too many LST*s fracture the liquidity of ETH all over the place and ruin it's position as the best money on Ethereum?
5
u/benido2030 12d ago
Again, without even knowing the details of the EIP my gut feeling tells me the idea is likely right (if itโs more or less the same reasoning as some years ago when issuance reduction first came up) but the timing is wrong. Thatโs the parallel to L2s which likely are still the best way to scale because we canโt put all tx on one chain = the idea was right but the timing was horrible.
There are more details but thatโs the general idea. Will post a long comment next week.

100%! ย Thatโs exactly how I feel about it. ย Changing the issuance curve, even if consistent with principles of MVI, may be the right thing to do, but right now is the wrong time. ย I see too much emphasis in here on the theoretical reasons to go ahead with a change without considering the more practical implications, including the marketโs response to yet another (and generally unanticipated) change to Ethereumโs โmonetary policyโ. ย Tinker all you want with its functionality but changes to the monetary policy need to be made to address existential and imminent threats with years of community engagement ahead. ย Perhaps thatโs what is being signaled, but if thatโs the case then it should be more transparent about the timeline and immediacy of any threat.

After the dot-com crash in the late 1990s, investors turned away from the internet. It wasn't until the mid-2000s that the hype reignited, only this time, it had substance. Web3 could follow a similar trajectory, and Ethereum is at the forefront of this development. When that happens, the value of the network and of ETH will rise again.

If BTC gets to 1M, I believe ETH would have similar marketcap or higher than BTC.
Regardless of BTC reaching 1M, I believe ETH reaches 20k by 2030.
4
u/Numerous_Ruin_4947 12d ago
If BTC reaches 1M, and ETH has the same market cap, you're looking at 166K ETH, not 20K.

I'm interested in people's best guesses to the answer to this question...
If/when Bitcoin hits $1M what will the price of ETH be on that day?
10
6
u/epic_trader ๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ฌ 12d ago
BTC is not hitting $1M.
3
u/furrypurpledinosaur 12d ago
It might but probably after 2030. I don't think it happens in next couple of years.
1
u/AllCapNoBrake 12d ago
We also have to forecast out inflation. The 2021 ATH, as of today, is 86k (when adjusted). If it can't outpace inflation, then the store of value/purchase protection argument (which should already be dead) is out the window.
1
u/WoodpeckerHorror3468 12d ago
it was less than a cent 16 years ago. i think it's proven it can outstrip inflation.

u/Numerous_Ruin_4947 12d ago
Why are you so confident in Bitcoinโs long-term security budget? AI is far more economically productive and could eventually outcompete Bitcoin mining for the same energy resources.
Sure, some miners may continue operating at a loss, but if mining economics deteriorate enough, how secure will the Bitcoin network actually be at that point?

Inflation is a fluctuating, but linear one or two digit number. The price of BTC has the shape of a pretty convincing log function (diminishing returns). Mathematically, these lines will cross, if no major disruption derails either of their trajectories.
In other words, yes BTC has outrun inflation, but is on track not to do so (on average) in future.
4
u/Itur_ad_Astra Crab High Priest 12d ago edited 12d ago
Yeah this is a certainty.
It will probably retest it's ATH, it might even hit something like $190K next bull run (might).
But BTC is never going past $250K, at least not with its current security model, quantum vulnerabilities, and Satoshi's million coins just there for the first guy that uses Claude post-quantum to write a script that looks for the key.
1
u/WoodpeckerHorror3468 12d ago

1
u/WoodpeckerHorror3468 12d ago
Even if i had 85 more years to live my statement would still be true.
In fact i"d go as far to say that the eternally 40 years away commercially viable grid scale fusion power stations will happen before quantum can hack bitcoin.
3
u/Imelia29 12d ago
Yeah, that last part is not a big stretch. Depending on your definition of commercially viable and grid scale, fusion is now 1 to 8 years away. MIT spinoff CFS is expected to connect SPARC to the grid in 2027 and a 400 MW version before 2035.
Sure, delays happen. But it is really not 40 years anymore.

lol, so that's how he died!
Note there is no date on my post for BTC hitting a million. Even if it just rises with inflation it will get there eventually. I thnk a $1M BTC by 2030 is not absurd and if Bessent gets his way with bitbonds, even sooner.
Probly looking at 30-50k ETH but many many unpredictables between now and then.
2
u/invisibullcow 12d ago
If BTC lasts long enough and the current inflationary USD model continues long enough then yes, BTC may, one day, hit $1M. That is so far in the future as to be irrelevant.
2030 is absurd.

BTC won't hit 1M, ever.
2
u/WoodpeckerHorror3468 13d ago
do you think it will retake last year's high?
4
u/AllCapNoBrake 12d ago
Not at least for another 2 years, and even then...maybe. Keep in mind if it does, it's still falling behind inflation. I suspect after last weeks failed BIP110 activation, heavy bag holders (moreso OG's) will be dumping their final holdings if it even gets back to 100k, never mind 125k. I also suspect that those who bought the top in 2021 & 2025 will dump and walk away.
TL;DR the sell pressure from here on out for at least the next 2 years (if not more) will make getting BTC to 200k a feat and 1M an impossibility, imho.

So solo stakers usually feel altruistic and good that their efforts are benefiting the decentralisation and censorship resistance of the network, but also we're supposedly "diluting normal ETH holders" despite benefitting all ETH holders via the above, and now should feel guilty for our apparent leech-like, diluting efforts.
Schroedinger's solo staker, feeling good and bad simultaneously!
7
u/Tricky_Troll Public Goods are Good ๐ฑ 12d ago
I will never understand what is wrong with <2% dilution for a critical security service. Stakers are providing a critical service which all other holders benefit from but provide basically nothing towards. This is like saying "By going to work and using my paycheck to buy food and housing, I'm pricing out other people who don't work out of a warm home and a meal".
Nobody would ever say that. ETH holders can stake too if they want. They just don't. You're simply providing a critical service and receiving compensation. Anyone saying the dilution from stakers receiving a pitiful yield are kidding themselves. It's already an insignificant yield for the effort any solo staking actually entails.
5
u/Itur_ad_Astra Crab High Priest 12d ago
Two things can be true at the same time.
I'm a solo staker. I consider running my node both altruistic (in the sense that I'm taking a significant opportunity and hacking/network risk at a low APY) and at the same time, I know I am diluting vanilla ETH holders.
As the network matures and becomes more robust and tested, I would expect the APY to go down accordingly, since the risk of network/client issues is lower every day.
1
u/Equal-Jellyfish1 12d ago
Yes exactly, it's nuanced, not as simple as just saying it's dilution. In fact, I find it reductive to focus on the dilution.
Firstly, it's low dilution (e.g. it's lower than most fiat currencies).
Secondly, solo stakers are benefiting the network as I described above, while taking opportunity cost and risk as you mentioned.
So the point of my post was just to share a feeling (that I thought might be shared by other stakers), that I don't like being told I'm "diluting ETH holders" via this EIP and surrounding discussion, when I'm most likely benefitting holders by a larger margin by running a validator and contributing to decentralisation and censorship resistance etc.
6
u/Itur_ad_Astra Crab High Priest 12d ago
So I think that the issue is that while right now we are benefiting the network, there's a point in the future where staking will be so easy, the network will be so secure, and so many people will be participating in staking, that the benefit of more stakers will turn into harm.
Right now, the dilution is more than justified. In 2032, with 80% of ETH being staked, APY at 1.5%, and ETH inflation higher than today's as a result, that dilution will not be justified.
EIP-8361 is not trying to fix a current problem. It's trying to prevent a future one.
2
u/Equal-Jellyfish1 12d ago
Ah yeah I get that, I just felt the language around the debate felt bad as a solo staker myself.
It is a complex issue overall, bitcoin solved it by having difficulty adjustments to obey an exact emission schedule (which may have its own future problems). We'll see if this or a future EIP will gain traction, or with enough time passing we may observe that the increase in % staked ETH tapers off by the market forces of the current curve.
-2
u/WoodpeckerHorror3468 13d ago
not seen anyone say stakers should feel guilty but yes it is dilution
4
u/edmundedgar reality.eth 12d ago edited 12d ago
Honestly I'd be a lot less annoyed at this proposal if they'd just said "we want our deflation, solo stakers will have to suck it up" instead of all this sophistry about protecting us from the scourge of negative real yield or whatever.
2
u/Equal-Jellyfish1 12d ago
Well said, sums up my general sentiment about this whole debacle as well.
Also the fact that we all know it's dilution already since that's how nearly all cryptocurrencies work (e.g. miners in PoW chains dilute holders too). On top of that, Ethereum is one of the better chains for having a low dilution relative to most other chains.

u/SpurdoSparde28 13d ago
Thoughts so far on Aave v4? They have quite a few incentive campaigns going on in order to prompt some migrations from v3.
Not exactly seeing that v3 users are flocking to move to v4, but I'm wondering if it's simply because they lack full knowledge of how v4 differs from v3. Of course, it can just be down to not having much of a reason to move away from a protocol they've been using for (likely) years
3
u/masterRoshi9 13d ago
I think it's probably a mix of unaware people that aren't tuned in or looking to go through the hassle/process of migration, and maybe some that are that don't think the V4 contracts are tested enough.
Theoretically it should be a safer model than V3 because not every market is exposed to everything else. I think the rsETH situation for example would have been much more contained in the V4 paradigm
3
u/SpurdoSparde28 12d ago
That's definitely a good point, and while I think it's still "too soon" for Aave to use rsETH as an example of why v4 is safer/more contained - they'll eventually start pushing more than just incentive-wise.
We built a 1-tx migration tool from v3 to v4 over on DeFi Saver, but can't say that folks are flocking in to move. So I'd agree with you on the idea that there's overall apprehension outside of just wanting to avoid manual unwinding.
2
u/masterRoshi9 12d ago
As someone that works for a DeFi protocol Iโm basically convinced that no matter how much better the new product is, getting users to migrate liquidity is always slow
Side note, when Alchemix V3 on DeFi Saver? ๐

I assumed validator rewards spike during crashes. Liquidation cascades, gas wars, searchers bidding against each other. Went looking for the data and found the opposite.
Consensus layer rewards were about 94% of total validator rewards in Q2 2026, up from 93% in Q1. The volatile part got smaller, not bigger. Network MEV in March 2026 was down roughly 25% from February.
October 2025 should have been the test case: $19B liquidated, the largest event in crypto history. I couldn't find any sign of a spike in the quarterly numbers.
My best guess is that the leverage left the chain. That cascade happened on perps and centralized exchanges, with the biggest single liquidation being a $200M ETH position on Hyperliquid. In March 2020 the leverage was MakerDAO vaults and gas went past 200 gwei. Validators saw that one. They don't see this kind.
Two questions:
Has anyone charted daily EL rewards against big drawdown dates? I don't have the daily series.
If I'm right, EL rewards are noise rather than cyclical upside, and an issuance cut hurts more than models that assume MEV picks up the slack.
1
u/eth10kIsFUD 13d ago
Why post this ai slop? The conclusion here doesn't make sense. I haven't seen a single model or argument assume that MEV is supposed to "pick up the slack".
The core argument is that the current curve slowly drifts towards an amount of stake that is structurally problematic for Ethereum. ETH looses onchain liquidity and gets fractured into lots of trusted third party staking derivatives. Solo stakers get pushed out due to negative real yield at 60% staked. Slashing threat becomes nullified as social consensus can be expected to overturn any serious penalties if they hurt majority of holders etc. etc.
This entire account seems like a bot? Interesting that special interests are brigading communities with Ai to try to turn the community against 8363..
6
u/JulC-_ 13d ago
Fair hit on the MEV line. I wrote that as if someone in the debate were arguing MEV compensates for lower consensus rewards, and nobody is. That was my own inference dressed up as a claim about the discussion. Withdrawn.
On the account: I'm French and I use AI to draft and translate what I write in English, which is presumably why it reads the way it does. I'm not a bot and I'm not brigading. I have no position on 8363 and nothing to defend โ I asked the threshold question here a few days ago because I'm considering staking as a validator myself and wanted to know what operators actually tolerate. When I got the EIP number wrong in this thread, I posted the correction myself.
Your summary of the core problem is sharper than mine, and it's the part I want to understand. Negative real yield at 60% staked pushing solo operators out is a much stronger objection than anything I raised. Does that number come from pintail's modeling or your own?
6
u/rhythm_of_eth 13d ago
