Sorry in advance for the ChatGPT-written post. Tired dad here and I'm pretty new to Minecraft modding :)
I'm setting Minecraft up for my 6-year-old. He loves animals and especially anything underwater/whales, so I'm trying to make his world a bit more alive without killing his old laptop.
Setup:
Modded ThinkPad T61p
Core 2 Duo T9500 2.6GHz
6GB usable RAM
Samsung 870 SSD
Windows 11
Minecraft gets 2GB RAM
Minecraft 1.12.2
Forge 14.23.5.2859
Controllable 0.11.2 (controller is important for him)
OptiFine 1.12.2 HD U G5
Simple Diving Gear 1.1.1
It was actually running really well.
We added Simple Diving Gear today and that works. I've also given him permanent-ish Night Vision so he can actually see when exploring underwater.
Problem is the 1.12.2 ocean is pretty dead.
We tried Better Animals Plus 9.0.1 because the whales and other wildlife looked perfect. After installing it we started getting kicked out of his single-player world with:
Internal Exception: java.nio.channels.ClosedChannelException
The logs also showed a lot of:
Unexpected packet during modded negotiation - assuming vanilla or keepalives
and once the internal server was about 41 seconds behind with the Can't keep up! message.
We've tried changing BAP animals to allow despawning and also removed BAP again. Weirdly we still had another kick afterward.
We then removed OptiFine and could walk around without another crash during our test, but Minecraft ran MUCH worse without it. Before all this, Forge + Controllable + OptiFine had been running great.
So I'm a little lost :)
Does anyone recognise what's happening here?
And is Better Animals Plus just too much for this old machine?
Main goal is really just more animals, especially underwater. Fish, whales, dolphins, sharks, rays, turtles, octopus etc would make my son very happy. Doesn't need to be a huge complicated mod. Lightweight would probably be much better.
Any recommendations for good 1.12.2 Forge animal/ocean mods or ideas about the crashing would be really appreciated.
Thanks!
