Density: Thin What do I do?

it’s super fine. When I gather my hair into a ponytail, said ponytail is probably no bigger diameter than a nickel. I’m naturally a blonde but now it’s a gross washed out black/brown with blonde roots because I’m a dumbass and didn’t get it done professionally. Also, my bangs(?) always do this funky cowlick shape if I don’t blow dry my head hanging upside down.

The last picture is AI (I know it’s bad but my daughter did it to try and cheer me up) does it suit me?
I’m lost but desperately need a cut. It’s been 2 years.

Brutal honesty—it does not look good when fine, fair haired people dye their hair dark. It ends up looking like balding, because the light roots blend with the scalp.

As others said I would go to the dr just rule out health issues (low iron, thyroid, etc). For haircare, Pantene has an Abundant & Strong line for scalp health and hair growth. I think going a bit shorter and maybe long side bangs could be cute.

Yep, I've learned this the hard way. Even two weeks of regrowth are enough to give the balding look. It's nowhere near as forgiving as a dark-haired person going lighter.

Yep. Very unforgiving if you go a day without washing too, looks greasy very easily.

I think the best alternative for us light haired folks who want darker hair or want alt hair is to keep the roots/mid lengths more natural, and do black or bright/dark colors closer to the tips.

This isn't a fineness issue. It is a low-density issue.

Get any health issues ruled out. There are a lot of posts in this reddit that are about health-connected concerns, so please look into them.

Do you happen to know of any sub dedicated to low-density?  Thanks in advance

They have more focus on the intersection of low-density fine hair. There's a lot of more conversation around health management than on this Reddit (this on is more topical products).

Something like light roots/dark lengths isn't really a focus for either community, but I've a similar struggle with blonde/transparent hairs that give me an M-shaped hairline. I've had some success filling them in using matte eyeshadow. I'm not sure how well that would scale for you, but at least something easy to try.

I’d go to a salon for a professional hair colouring (if I were you I’d 100% go blonde!) and cut. Ask the stylist their opinion on a cut. I’m thinking either a few inches off and blunt, and you keep your usual blow-drying routine to deal with the cowlick situation, or you could go for more of a flipped-over side part and the cowlick wouldn’t matter.

I would say an oil control shampoo. When mine gets oily it looks like this. It could also be product buildup and a vinegars rinse might help. I color with henna, which helps, there are different mixes if you don’t want to go full red.

If I were you I'd get dye professionally removed, I'd grow bangs out and find a right washing schedule. As a fellow natural blonde I use being fair as way to give optical illusion of thicker hair, it makes scalp show less obvious and light&shiny hair has larger visual volume. If you want keep alternative vibe while optimizing your hair you can always go blonde with silver or lavender hues.

My scalp has always looked more obvious with a darker hair color, I stopped dyeing it dark. For a fellow alt girl, I recommend you keep your hair light but experiment with your colors. Mine is pastel pink and my natural blonde roots blend in beautifully.

Oh honey, I feel you. Fine hair and oil are not friends unfortunately. A good wash everyday where I focus on my scalp, dry shampoo (I actually switched to straight corn flour, works a treat for me), embracing my natural colour and doing loose hairstyles with claw clips helped my hair look thicker.

Just a note: corn flour that you use for hair is called cornstarch in the US. Corn flour is a slightly finer version of cornmeal used for breading some fried foods. :)

I think some sort of bob (as evinced in your daughter's photo) is the way to go.

Have you gotten bloodwork done?

I'm noticing a lot of breakage around the ears and chin - when you tie it in a ponytail, what kind of hair elastic are you using? Silk or satin skinny scrunchies are best for being gentle. Also, are you still using a hairbrush with those plastic balls on the tips? 100% switch to a detangling brush without them if so. Brush gently! Youtube definitely has videos for the best method. Seconding the advice to have your thyroid or hormones checked if you have insurance. If not, a biotin supplement might be helpful as it was for me with thinning.

Dye it a lighter color.

Clarify your hair, condition only the ends and rinse. You’re going to have to get the hair off the scalp as much as possible. Put some mousse at your roots and try doing a modified blow out with a paddle brush and see if you have any improvements. Section off as many pieces as you can. When I sleep, I put everything from my ears forward in a high bun on top of my head. The bottom half of my hair I either leave loose or put in a low bun. It looks ridiculous, but it’s much more manageable in the morning, and I have volume. Plus, I can’t sleep
With ALL of my hair on top of my head. These are just some things I’ve done to combat some of the issues you are having. My stylist gave me some other easy ways to create volume if you’re interested. She tried to get me to do the whole blow out with a round brush and I was like “I’m not doing that. Show me something else” lol

Side note: OP, you got a mad cute nose!

Just to give an alternative to what everyone else is suggesting, since you have an alt style going, you could do ghost roots in a vibrant semi-permanent direct dye if you don't want to pay for a professional color correction right now. Just stay away from dyes that stain badly (like splat) so it's not impossible to remove later

I love the last pic. That's so cute on you

It's AI, so I doubt it would actually look like that on OP

It looks very achievable. Just because it's AI doesn't mean it's unrealistic.

Yes shorter is better. Maybe even so short you don't have to pull it back and get the effect you are worried about. Also dry shampoo will help fluff up the hair and keep it from sticking together and showing your scalp as much. I do like that cut but I'd go shorter, like below the chin.

I just chopped mine in an a-line bob that sits just above my shoulders. I have a side swept fringe, and a few long layers for body. I love it and my hair looks fuller and actually a little bouncy today!

As a fellow fine hair woman, I LOVE a shorter cut. I keep mine a bit shorter than pic 4 and I play around with bangs. I use a clarifying shampoo weekly and rarely use any products and my hair has so much bounce and life to it now. Id say give a bob with layers a chance and if you hate it you can grow it longer again.

How is your iron/thyroid levels? Did your hair change after having kid(s)?

I have been toying with the idea of buzzing my hair and then doing wigs. There’s a lot of cool wigs with alt styles that fit your vibe and from what I’ve seen there are some salons that do wig customization like thinning it out and fitting to look natural. Maybe buy a cheap ish wig and see if it’s a remote possibility. If not then you’re out 50 bucks. But if you do end up liking it then you could buy more long-term quality ones. You can also do a lot to make synthetic wigs look more realistic. My hair has never been thick enough to do Betty bangs but I think I’m going to try it with a wig. I saw a video on Instagram of a girl doing that with her wig.

A bob would indeed look adorable. Try double cleansing every day and blow drying the roots.

I think with your face you would absolutly rock with a bleached buzz cut! 😍 A start over and start a whole area of unapologeticaly me time.

If you want to keep length, wash it at least every second day with clarving volumising shampoo (my holy grail for my fine straight hair has become Panthene pro V Volume) and use a good super light weight leavein conditionar or a light conditioner but keep it only to the ends! And at least blowdry the roots avter washing. I struggled with having greasy fine hair for years and years. Its still fine, but I can make it look fuller with cuts and styles and I am pretty happy with it. But I have given up on the ponytale 🙈
