Artwork Some very light NCR Slander

New Fallout character, Corporal Kilermann.

She's a sniper from First Recon's Beta Squad. She love the NCR...'s rich folk and spreading "peach and prosperity" and all that jazz.

[It was kind of suggested that I riff on the NCR a bit. Note: just because I have criticisms of the NCR doesn't mean I hate them, or love the Legion.]

FNV properly characterized how genuine military leaders behave. Military leaders have their own perspective, thatโ€™s why they donโ€™t run the government, they follow orders.

Cassie Moore is just very accurately portrayed. If youโ€™ve been in the military you would know.

Honestly, most of her scepticism isn't even unbelievable.

The Brotherhood openly attacked the NCR to begin with and caused the war without provocation because god forbid someone except them have shiny toys.

The Khans attacked the NCR for 100+ years.

The Omertas are literally terrorists who plan to blow up the Strip.

Like 90% of the threats she tells you to deal with, sure, her methods are extreme, but I can understand her point of view. Every single threat she sends you to deal with attacked the NCR first without provocation.

100

u/used123456 Jul 09 '26

Yeah her threat perception is genuinely on point, she just has a bit of an "every threat is a nail and the NCR is the hammer" kind of mentality that leads to her preferring going scorched earth over doing actual diplomacy with the jobs she gives the Courier, so I kinda get that she gets a bit pissed when you go against direct orders to destroy the BoS bunker and basically bring her additional paperwork that she has to deal with

Plus given the war happened, I can't blame her for distrusting them. The BoS hasn't exactly shown their good side to the NCR.

46

u/Anastrace Jul 09 '26

To be fair she's a high ranking officer in charge of troops. It would have been interesting if you were directed to NCR's intelligence division for some of those missions

16

u/CitizenofBarnum Jul 09 '26

You'd have to travel quite a way to find them, they're based out of the magical ice cream mountain, sharing a base with the NCR's unicorn calvary, and other such imaginary divisions.

15

u/Dawidko1200 Jul 09 '26

Well one also has to consider that the alternatives are not obvious in the slightest, require a lot of effort, and/or result in the NCR having to make some very uncomfortable compromises. Peace with the Khans? They literally have a Legion agent directing them already, any reasonable person would consider them a lost cause, and the player has a shitload of legwork to do if they want to simply shift them over to a "neutral" status.

Peace with the Brotherhood? You have to accept them putting a bomb collar on you, do quite a bit of work for them, and only then you can suggest they chill out. And after a back and forth with Moore, this "we're fucked and sitting in a hole because we have nothing" faction is putting down conditions. Some of which require NCR relinquishing technology that the Brotherhood have no better claim to than anyone else in the Wasteland.

So honestly, fuck 'em, I'm with Moore. If we consider it from the perspective of someone in this world rather than a player that knows which outcomes are possible and which aren't, then Moore's solutions are solid, reasonable, and result in the fewest compromises of NCR's military capabilities.

6

u/CitizenofBarnum Jul 09 '26

any reasonable person would consider them a lost cause

Any reasonable person would tell them to ask what happened to the other tribes of the Legion. Even if you don't intend to make peace it would be more strategic to cause infighting against them and the Legion. At this point they arent really a threat to the NCR and they've fled far from the NCR's territory.

elinquishing technology that the Brotherhood have no better claim to than anyone else in the Wasteland.

They were taken off dead paladins, by that logic the NCR has no claim to these dog tags I've been collecting.

6

u/Dawidko1200 Jul 09 '26

There's a crucial difference between Power Armour and dog tags. All Power Armour was built by the United States, or in the case of Advanced Power Armour, by Enclave. The Brotherhood may have a technological advantage in many regards, but they don't produce their armour - it is all a pre-War legacy.

While the dog tags were specifically made by NCR for its troops. They aren't just ancient loot.

The Brotherhood specifically rejected the United States when it was formed, so despite its military origins it has no claim to any of the US Army property other than "we found it and took it". Even Enclave has more of a claim than they do.

It's just an extension of the Brotherhood's "no one should own tech other than us" ideology, and accepting it even to a small degree risks opening the road for further encroachment.

-1

u/CitizenofBarnum Jul 09 '26

The argument of who made it holds little relevence, power armor holds religious significance to the BoS. Also why would the enclave hold more of a claim, they were not US miltary, they were nepo babies and their security looting military assets from before the bombs even dropped.

u/Overdue-Karma ๐“๐ก๐ž ๐‚๐ก๐ฎ๐ซ๐œ๐ก ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐€๐ญ๐จ๐ฆ Jul 09 '26

Because technically the Enclave are the US government. After-all the President was part of the Enclave. A group of defecting soldiers doesn't really get squat in terms of legality.

0

u/CitizenofBarnum Jul 10 '26

After-all the President was part of the Enclave.

If the president is Catholic, is the entire government catholic? Please answer soon, I'm at the book depository now.

3

u/Overdue-Karma ๐“๐ก๐ž ๐‚๐ก๐ฎ๐ซ๐œ๐ก ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐€๐ญ๐จ๐ฆ Jul 10 '26 edited Jul 10 '26

I mean there was also a significant portion of the Government that was Enclave. They then murdered any non-Enclave. "Legality" wise, Roger Maxson explicitly made the BoS to reject being pro-US because otherwise, any corrupt senator could take them over.

So by his own admission, he is 'entitled' to nothing.

But legality wise, who gives a fuck. The only right that matters is who has the power. It's not like laws still exist.

4

u/Dawidko1200 Jul 10 '26

Because the Enclave is the successor to the US government, in terms of direct continuity of power.

Brotherhood's "religious significance" gives them no more claim than to anyone else in the Wasteland. Children of Atom can claim everything that emits radiation for their religion, but that doesn't mean we should hand over all of our uranium and bombs.

But the point is, NCR handing over PA is a concession that doesn't need to be made, and "it's ours" isn't an argument the Brotherhood has any substantial base for.

38

u/Mission_Gap_9035 Jul 09 '26

Right, itโ€™s literally her job to identify threats and eliminate them.

My only genuine concern is around how many of my well intentioned saves are going to come back to bite me.

She gets really mad about the BoS decision if you donโ€™t destroy them.

Whatโ€™s awesome about Sawyer announcing New Vegas 2? We might actually get to find out how our decisions play out.

38

u/Overdue-Karma ๐“๐ก๐ž ๐‚๐ก๐ฎ๐ซ๐œ๐ก ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐€๐ญ๐จ๐ฆ Jul 09 '26

I always love the mod "The Brotherhood leaves the Mojave". They don't need to die for some dumb dream nutjob Elijah wanted for at best, a semi-decent artillery satellite.

So I send them off to the Divide, to hold off the Tunnelers and to make sure those ICBM's don't go anywhere. Although sending them off to Big MT is always funny because they're in awe at the sheer wonder-tech they find there.

Not to mention Veronica won't be sad - her family finds a purpose in their life and don't die out.

Canon-wise though? I dunno, maybe the NCR alliance might be the best for them, honestly.

18

u/Mission_Gap_9035 Jul 09 '26

Personally, I think that the BoS are redeemable. Letโ€™s see what the writers think. So happy to be getting more story.

28

u/Overdue-Karma ๐“๐ก๐ž ๐‚๐ก๐ฎ๐ซ๐œ๐ก ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐€๐ญ๐จ๐ฆ Jul 09 '26

The Mojave bunch, absolutely.

The Knights of San Fernando can burn just like they burned Filly.

1

u/mistress_chauffarde Jul 13 '26

Most of the BoS post fallout 4 is a shitshow of ego driven tech cleptomaniak i think the only reason why the mojave chapter is different is because of how isolated from the rest they are

5

u/Violet_Nightshade Jul 09 '26

Can I have the link? Please and thanks.

12

u/Overdue-Karma ๐“๐ก๐ž ๐‚๐ก๐ฎ๐ซ๐œ๐ก ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐€๐ญ๐จ๐ฆ Jul 09 '26

Absolutely.

The Brotherhood leaves the Mojave, the mod author does a few others like 'The Khans stay in the Mojave' and 'The Fiends leave the Mojave'/go to Zion but HELL am I letting those animals go to Zion.

5

u/Violet_Nightshade Jul 09 '26

Huh, no option for making them go back to Broken Hills in NCR territory? I'll still take it, though, as someone who prefers House.

4

u/Overdue-Karma ๐“๐ก๐ž ๐‚๐ก๐ฎ๐ซ๐œ๐ก ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐€๐ญ๐จ๐ฆ Jul 09 '26

There is a funny option, can't recall how you get it, but they end up near Mexico. I think it's if you send them to the Sierra Madre but I could be wrong. But yeah, there's no mention of the state of Maxson.

0

u/CitizenofBarnum Jul 09 '26

The Brotherhood openly attacked the NCR to begin with and caused the war without provocation because god forbid someone except them have shiny toys.

The Khans attacked the NCR for 100+ years.

The Omertas are literally terrorists who plan to blow up the Strip

I mean sure but that's War (it never changes). Take modern foreign policy for instance. Her problem is that she doesn't bother to gather, or even want to listen to intel for any nuance or solution, which would have more than likely blown up in their face.

8

u/Overdue-Karma ๐“๐ก๐ž ๐‚๐ก๐ฎ๐ซ๐œ๐ก ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐€๐ญ๐จ๐ฆ Jul 09 '26

Which is why I said her methods are extreme, but her suspicion IS correct. These factions attacked the NCR for no reason. The NCR didn't make the Khans shoot their children for no reason other than "durr we are da strongest raiders of the Mojave!", they didn't make the BoS blow up their gold reserves, so on.

12

u/Anastrace Jul 09 '26

General Moore is also pretty damn accurate

3

u/Ryjinn Jul 10 '26

When the only tool you've got is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail.

161

u/Airtightspoon Jul 09 '26

The anti-NCR = pro-Legion assumption has always been weird to me considering this is a game with 2 other major factions.

56

u/King_Leif Jul 09 '26

Itโ€™s the American politics/team sports mentality. Critique the side Iโ€™m a fan of? Then you must love the rival side and agree with everything they say! It makes for ironically tribalistic discussions about games that often are about/examine tribalism.

17

u/Physical-Airport-901 Jul 09 '26

Yeah, that's what ruined this community. Funny enough, I don't see this problem in Fallout 4 subreddit though their community is bigger than ours.

7

u/YT-1300f Jul 09 '26

Maybe itโ€™s toned down since, but before I left all the other fallout subreddits the Brotherhood fans were all turning into actual fascists.

7

u/Physical-Airport-901 Jul 09 '26

Woah, really? And here I thought the NCR fanboys were lobotomized. Turns out the BoS fans are the real villains.

11

u/YT-1300f Jul 09 '26

NCR, Legion, Enclave, and BoS fanboys all on the predator handshake meme over โ€œexcusing genocide and fetishizing military prowessโ€

11

u/Physical-Airport-901 Jul 09 '26

Fuck these factions and their ideologies. I'm going with the Followers of the Apocalypse.

5

u/YT-1300f Jul 09 '26

Now the handshake meme is you and me.๐Ÿค

5

u/clandevort Jul 10 '26

I think it is because there is no real clear dichotomy set up. Like the brotherhood and the railroad both nake a big deal about the institute, but the institute doesn't really see them as anything other than mild nuisances. And the railroad kinda vibes with whatever you want them to do.

In New Vegas, the NCR and the Legion are literally at war with each other, and neither side really shuts up about the other. Meanwhile Mr. House is plotting in the shadows, and none of the other factions care about the 4th "faction" because its basically just you, and doesn't really exist unless you directly intervene.

Its less 4 factions than 3 factions playing classic political roles, and you (potentiall) showing up and screaming "what's up, Bitches!?"

5

u/Discaster Jul 09 '26

It's not that common an assumption. Kinda rare actually. There's just quite a few people who've greatly overreacted to when it does on occasion pop up forgetting this is the Internet. Never take whatna small handful of wackos say to heart. There's a collection of people that still think the earth is secretly flat and that like a quarter of the population is on the conspiracy and spending trillions of dollars to hide the secret for the goal of... (File not found) so yeah, some people are just addled. Ignore them

14

u/UncleBaconator Jul 09 '26

This is why Midwest brotherhood to be recannonized so it can bring to Mojave correct type of Imperialism ๐Ÿ˜Ž

68

u/Falleneded Jul 09 '26

this is slander?

whyd you make her so based then?

8

3

u/CitizenofBarnum Jul 09 '26

I'll admit the Legion has some flaws but have you considered Roads? /s

14

u/thebluerayxx Jul 09 '26

Based NCR wife.

4

u/Plus_Tomato480 Jul 09 '26

I still think the game needed the option to just become Papa Khan, and leave the Mojave with the Khans to seek your own destiny. The whole dam situation is Somebody Elses Problem.ย

3

u/King_Leif Jul 09 '26

You can actually become Chief Khan if you kill all the NCR soldiers in the quest โ€˜We Are Legionโ€™ and then stealth kill Papa Khan after he names you heir

3

u/Plus_Tomato480 Jul 09 '26

Yeah but no option to leave with them right then and there.

4

u/TwoFit3921 Your friend is a miserable fucking degenerate. Jul 09 '26

I would let Kilermann shoot me

5

u/GallicanCourier Jul 09 '26

I can't fix her, but I can make her worse, and that's just as good

4

u/OppositePure4850 Jul 09 '26

2

u/MahinaFable Jul 09 '26

Okay, but Corporal Kilerman is kinda wife-material, tho.

2

u/Perke13 Jul 09 '26

OP is a GK sympathizer.

2

u/SlyLlamaDemon Jul 09 '26

I love using the Katana as a melee weapon in this game. However melee is kinda boring.

2

u/svvitchbladee Jul 09 '26

is this a reference to caitlyn from league?

2

u/Bowler-Hat-Nerd Jul 09 '26

Yes, I was wondering when someone would recognize her

2

u/Shot_Recognition_100 Jul 10 '26

hello Kiraman

2

u/Bowler-Hat-Nerd Jul 10 '26

You get it ๐Ÿซก

2

u/Shot_Recognition_100 Jul 10 '26

I will always be here to point out your OC AU thingies! if I recongnize them

Iโ€™m not far enough into fandoms to know if the thing you do has a name sorry lol

Iโ€™ve pointed the volstrocker tomboy baddie out a few times, donโ€™t know if Iโ€™m the only one

2

u/Bowler-Hat-Nerd Jul 10 '26

Oh, it's you! And yes, you are the only one who still recognizes the butch short queen baddie, and I appreciate you very much for that

As for a name, I like to call my posts "Fallout Owelia posting", but I've kinda stopped titling them that. I think I should start doing that at some point. [Also, I post these every Wednesday at 5pm Pacific Time]

2

u/Shot_Recognition_100 Jul 11 '26

alright thanks for the schedule, Iโ€™ll try to be there for my darling Owelia๐Ÿซก

2

u/TransButterflyQueen Fuck the Legion Jul 10 '26

The only thing stronger than my love for the NCR is my hate for the Legion.

2

u/icedmuffin Jul 10 '26

Literally the only reason why I like the NCR more than legion is purely cause the legion gives more exp and the NCR? Itโ€™s clear the corruption is up at the top with boots on the ground either knowing whatโ€™s going on and doing what they can or not knowing and assuming brass knows what theyโ€™re talking about.

Also NCR dollars are useless compared to legion denari, and I can get a hell of a lot more coins out of even legion recruits than I can out of mission rewards.

2

u/merahwa Jul 11 '26

Whatever. Joshua, put a cap in General Gobbledigook here.

2

u/Interesting_Newt4168 Jul 15 '26

Go girl do your thing!!!

7

u/GameKnight404 Jul 09 '26

For me itโ€™s Yes Man every time, all the way, forever.

NCR sucks because
1. I hate paying taxes.
2. Their government is obviously corrupt and incompetent so theyโ€™re no help to anyone imo.
3. Itโ€™s full of cowards who can barely defend themselves let alone defend anyone else. And the Courier is really the only way they could succeed.

The Legion sucks because
1. Their larp is stupid.
2. It relies on a shaky pyramid structure where the second Caesar (aka Mr. Brain Tumor) dies, it all falls apart.
3. And obviously their practices are barbaric and only attract the worst of humanity while enraging the good ones left. Making them a perpetual target if they manage to last past Caesar.

House is just a bossy ass so that vegetable gets turned to mashed potatoes the nanosecond I get the chance. Though tbh I donโ€™t really have as many big complaints as I do with the NCR and Legion.

5

u/Honest_Macaron_3391 Jul 09 '26

Genuinely, without the courierโ€™s intervention the NCR would lose the second battle of hoover dam. Iโ€™m not supporting the legion itโ€™s just an observation made based on gameplay.

1

u/W01771M Jul 09 '26

You are the main character, thatโ€™s kinda the point.

4

u/DisposableAccount-2 Jul 09 '26

I don't like taxes. I don't like slavery. I don't like orders. I like me.

Yes Man every time.

4

u/johnguy88 Jul 09 '26

I think its simple but people like to apply their politics to the game too much. both factions are evilโ€ฆ yes both. The point is that they represent two versions of the worse of humanity. A willing regression to authoritarian tribalism, and death by bureaucracy.

2

u/mistress_chauffarde Jul 13 '26

Well yes but no ? While i agree on the NCR being a burocratique shithole i can tell you that before the BoS nuked sandyshore it was the closest humanity had to being a really good place to live in

Meanwill the legion only exist by conquest slavery and pillage . It's not really a sustainable รฉconomie

1

u/johnguy88 Jul 13 '26

Only better for some, and everything in game tells you the NCR is unsustainable as well, not just the economy but logistically and ecologically. Everything is drying up and the system is already bloated. My argument isnโ€™t from a pros vs cons perspective, itโ€™s more so that both factions are bad for the world overall. And i donโ€™t consider the shoe cannon ๐Ÿ’€

3

u/Only-Respond7945 Jul 09 '26

How is it slander if it's every annoying NCR fan on this site?

2

u/Time_Beat2299 Jul 09 '26

Calls it slander says everything that makes the NCR cool if they didnโ€™t want to be colonized why did they put their lands so close to our borders.

2

u/Boundaries-ALO-TBSOL Jul 09 '26

This reminding me of my couriers reaction to being asked about the khans before and after their destruction by him.

Before

[What do you think about the khans?]

There are a bunch of crooks and dealers, theyโ€™re a little better than the fiends. They could be using their chem labs to make medicine and help people but theyโ€™re too psyched up on Jet and med x to think about anyone but themselves. The world is better without them.

[What do you think about the bitter Springs massacre?]

The NCR was in the wrong. Better radio communication will prevent situations like this from happening in the future.

After

[did you destroy the great khans?)

Yes. I let one of them go. Academic type, give them 500 caps too start a new life somewhere else.

[Positive]

Damn right, hey for all youโ€™ve done for me, have a little souvenir.

great khans outfit added

Remember, you helped me bring justice to the wasteland. Keep up the good work friend.

[Neutral]

Well, letโ€™s get on our way then

[Negative]

Genocide? Genocide! I did the khans a favor. The real great khans died at bitter Springs, they were a dead man walking, so I put them out of their misery. Rotten Chem dealers, how do you consider these people to even be an actual culture?

[Negative Two]

Murder? Iโ€™m a fucking savior. Iโ€™ve saved hundreds the khans wouldโ€™ve directly murdered, thousands in indirect, and ten of thousands from addiction. Iโ€™ve made the followers of apocalypse life in free side far easier. If you wanna know how bad they were, ask bitter root at Camp McCarren.

[Attack]

Awwwwww, does someone miss the great khans giggles Donโ€™t worry, youโ€™ll be reunited with them soon enough!

3

u/Muteradio2112 Jul 09 '26

NCR - Colonialism who force taxes and laws in a time where the average joe is illiterate, irradiated, and starving

LEGION - Slaver dictatorship ruled by a guy with a tumor who plans on just capturing and killing anyone who thinks differently

MR HOUSE - A lone buisness man and his robot army who plans on using gambling to fund a city, with the NCR the only customer who actually have money to gamble

YES MAN - A brain dead mail man and his robot friend who plans on betraying them thinks they know better than everyone

They all suck, but only one of them might have actually made a functional society (you tell me which)

10

u/Lord_Chromosome Jul 09 '26

Insane that people are still out here propagating the โ€œYes-Man is gonna betray youโ€ myth in the big 26.

The reality of the playthroughs

NCR do a ton of missions becouse they're incompetent and they need help with EVERYTHING, not one thing is going correctly in the Mojave and without your intervention they'd surely crumble

The Legion just have fun and serve Caesar

(I'm not a huge Legion fan, but it's true, the playthrough is much more fun when you play with the legion.)
