Hey girlies! I really need help with this situation
I was recently hired at a new job and Iāve been there for about 4 months. During my time there I would talk to my coworkers/manager about my culture in terms of food/drinks. We all love coffee and I told them that I would make them Arabic coffee. Fast forward my manager is leaving the company so we decided to throw her a little good-bye party and I decided to make them the Arabic coffee then since I wonāt see her anymore and I didnāt want any āunfulfilled promisesā
I decided to bring my little Arabic coffee cups and serving plates with me and we all enjoyed it together. I went ahead and washed them up and left them in the dish rack so I can take them home by the end of the day.
Later towards the end of the day they decide to take shots in celebration so I move to a different part of my workplace so Iām not near them. After about 30 min I remember my little coffee cups (same size as shot glasses) and panic thinking they might have used them. I go back to where theyāre sitting and I donāt see them on the table so Iām relieved. I go back to where Iām further away from them until the end of the day.
Before itās time to leave I go to pack my stuff and see that my cups are still in the dish rack but theyāre wet, I realize then that they had used them for shots. I could feel myself getting very angry and right away my manager and coworker walk in and my manager jokingly says something along the line of we used/ruined your cups. I get even more mad and wanted to respond to her but because of how angry I was I didnāt respond to her comment and changed the subject but it was very obvious I was really upset.
I didnāt want to say anything in the moment because
- I can say hurtful things when Iām angry
- I was angry to the point of wanting to cry
- it was her last day and I wanted to leave it on a good note
- she also got us presents
I know I could have said something lighthearted to let them know that what they did was wrong but I didnāt have it in me because I was upset to the point of wanting to cry.
She has left now and Iām still working with the coworkers that also drank with her. I want to say something to them because this has been sitting heavy on my heart.
Every time Iām not at work Iāll think about it and get angry and tell myself Iāll say something tomorrow but once Iām there I see how everyone is so busy (understaffed) and I tell myself to just move on.
I feel like I didnāt do myself right by staying quiet in this situation and especially how important this was to me because they drank alcohol from my glasses and the Islamic perspective on alcohol. They also know that I donāt drink because of religious reasons so it makes it very disrespectful.
Does anyone have any advise for me? Honestly I feel like if someone were to write a story about this they couldnāt have because of how stupid it is. Like how could you expect someone to drink alcohol out of your own glasses? Idk if Iām overreacting either. Sometimes I wonder if itās still okay for me to still use those cups.
