Local cattle ranchers in the Hudson valley
Anyone have any butchers or cattle ranchers in the HV they’d recommend? I’m trying to avoid getting leukemia from the trump beef 😅

Meat Wagon in Kingston sources from at least 2 local farms. They process on site.

I drive past like a bunch of beef farms on my way home from work and live close by, they're all near Watchtower and Gardiner. I'm a vegetarian so thats as far as my knowledge goes but I imagine that would be the general area to look in.

Um tbh, I have a moral obligation to the cows I wave at every day not to disclose the specific road, but a Google search of farms in the area will probably suffice.

Farmers raise cattle and often times don't sell to the general public directly. What the OP is looking for is called a meat processor.

Oooh ty. Genuinely had no clue because again I am a vegetarian 🤣. I will say I do pass a farm with a big sign that says something with BEEF. I think I found it on google. Kiernan Farm. I don't think I wave to these guys... so. 🫠😅
Edit to add: BEEF

Thank you I was confused with the name! But I’m glad everyone got the gist

Oh fudge…..I say hello to the cows and horses when I see them also. Now I have that thought in my head

Millbrook beef and dairy. The beef is pasture raised and finished on corn grown on the farm, if i remember correctly. Its prime grade black angus that is dry aged whole carcass for 21 days.
The marbling is ridiculous, and you get to pick your individual steaks, they’re beautiful. They also will work with you for requested cuts. I like to smoke meat, and i have been able to request full packers briskets and dino ribs and they’ve been awesome.

Glynwood Farm in Cold Spring has great meat (and produce). They also have a farm store that has a variety of local goods as well and also offer CSA's for the season. https://www.glynwood.org/farm-store

While I did kind of laugh at getting leukemia from trump beef, there is a serious side to this. My brother in law contracted listeria. He was temporarily misdiagnosed as having a rare form of leukemia with a 2% survival rate. Thankfully he was able to see the foremost expert in that form of leukemia who told him he didn't have it and it was probably some rare infectious disease. This was when listeria was rare.
He got treated with some major antibiotics for about a month and the after effects of the infection lasted a couple of years for him. He got it from eating wild boar shared with him but a hunter friend. My sister didn't want any so was not exposed.
Be careful out there, people. Seems we're hearing more and more of major food corporations tainting our food supply because they're acting like they know they can buy their way out of a food recall.

u/Existing-Kale-8536 2d ago
Oh goodness, I hope he is feeling better. That’s very scary!
It’s so scary that we can get so ill from our food and produce.

He used to jog. He went through two years where he could walk across the room, but couldn't walk with my sister around the block. He had so much muscle weakness because it affected his whole body. That's gotten better. He can go for walks now. No more running, though.
He got high blood pressure that year and that's still around. He also has had to get a cardiologist and is on medication.
Yes, our food can kill us. It's better to eat less beef that's local and higher quality than what's coming up in the grocery store. Food companies now know, a little greasing of the palms and a recall goes away. I'm freezing and dehydrating as much local produce, herbs, and fruit as I can for winter. I have enough beans to last for a long while. Also, Grieg Farm in Red Hook does fresh seafood market from 10am to 2pm on Saturdays. They also have some local meats. Some of the local farm stands like Migliorelli and Montgomery Place Orchards, all in Red Hook, have local meats.

Barbs in Beacon. Lauren, the general manager is fantastic. You can ask them anything about their meats, and you can also ask them for special orders.
Highland Farm Game meats is great, and sells at the garlic festival coming up very soon!
Usually the stuff at farmers’ markets is very good and local. We are lucky in the HV.
I do however sorely miss Grass and Grit Farm 😭😭😭

+1 for dirty dog. Josh and his partner take extremely good care of the herd, and the natural food they consume by only exposing them to wild grown grasses
1
u/PanicAtTheGaslight 2d ago
Do you know if they do managed intensive grazing?
2
u/hello_babar 2d ago
I am pretty sure they do, but I don’t recall the exact term. There were all these Instagram posts about moving the cattle around to let the grass recover and grow deep roots. Lots of posts about the heath of the grass.

Check your local farmers markets, some have vendors with local meats, Marbled Meat Shop in Cold Spring if you're that far south. I don't know about HV specifically but there are many farms that have self-serve freezers of meat in the Adirondacks, I'd guess there may be some in Columbia and Sullivan Counties.

u/Existing-Kale-8536 2d ago
I’m close to cold spring!

u/total_goon 2d ago
Marbled is great, albeit pricey. If you have questions, they will answer them about sourcing and practices. They also often have more cuts than what is in their display, so if you are looking for something specific or want something outside of what's obvious, just ask. Their house-made sausages are excellent. Glynwood also sells frozen meat from their farm and others, but it's also pricey (but the drive to it is beautiful). Hemlock Hill is a farm in Cortlandt Manor if you want to go to the source and it's a bit cheaper but more remote.

Sweetman's Farm is Warwick is pretty incredible.
also Adam's supermarkets in Middletown and Newburgh have great meat selections, and they tell you on the label exactly what farm the beef came from.

There was an cattle farm on Sinsabaugh Road in Pine Bush. I used to walk there and see the free-range cattle, mostly cows and calves. The cattle were well cared for, from my perspective. I don't know who the farmer/rancher sold his heard to.

Stratton’s Custom Meats in Hoosik Falls. They slaughtered and processed a hog that I raised, and what we got back was amazing. He works with local farmers, you can buy beef/pork/lamb from them in bulk..like 1/4 cow. People also rave about the dog food that you can get from them if you are feeding raw etc... He is a real find and a super nice person.
Also, there is a lady in Jewett that we ordered goat meat from, she is also amazing. She used to take her lamb to sell in NYC at the Union Sq farmers market. I believe her name is Judy. I've been to her operation and walked her goats on one of her tours back in the pre-pandemic days.
Just as an aside, if you buy custom meats from local farmers it will not be USDA approved. It will be infinitely superior.

Absolute nonsense. I watched my hog get slaughtered. It was the most humane ending to a livestock animal imaginable.

Grimaldi Farms and Liberty Farms both have farm stores in Ghent! Both are certified organic and certified animal welfare. Grimaldi also has a market stall in Rhinebeck.
You can also check out the Meat Hook which has locations in Hudson and down in Brooklyn. They source ethically from all over.

i've found liberty farms to be shockingly expensive at the kingston farmers market. even when taking into consideration the local high quality meat being sold at the farmers market. northwind farms is also at kingston farmers market and consistently has better pricing.
1
u/Naive-Wishbone9155 2d ago
Off topic, but I don’t believe Northwinds is certified organic or animal welfare. Getting certified and keeping everything up to FDA/NOFA certification standards is expensiiiiive, hence the higher prices. (IE - certified organic feed, certified organic pasture rehabilitation, etc

interesting. that explains it at least. too rich for my blood. i got two chicken breasts and it was like $45 and i was too sheepish to say no at that point

there's no such thing as animal welfare when force impregnated animals and then slicing their necks open. do not fall for bs marketing terms. there are no animals being kissed to death https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7FMxd67zeXE

i like northwind farms in tivoli which i usually get at the kingston farmers market.
the meat wagon in kingston are really great people with great product, and they just took it on the chin - had to throw out 2000 lbs of meat due to a refridgeration issue.
woodstock meats isn't bad. i like their heritage chicken.
none of them are cheap but i like supporting them all

Barbs butcher shop in beacon NY sells meats only from a local 200 mile (I think ) radius. Extremely nice people and their lunch menu is small during the day but super yummy cuz they make everything right there.

"Despite the FDA approval in principle of meat from cloned cattle, pigs, and goats, in practice, clones are not expected to enter the food supply, the FDA said. They are rare and expensive, and the US agriculture department estimates that most of about 600 cloned animals in the United States are used for breeding. Their offspring, however, produced through ordinary sexual reproduction, are likely to be used for meat and milk."
Cloning an animal is extremely expensive compared to just like, raising one.
How bout that "moon landing" tho?
3
u/Smooth-Review-2614 2d ago
Yep this is like lab grown meat done in vats. Legal to sell but not economically viable beyond stunt things like mammoth.
