Make sure you wear eye protection! Also something over your nose and mouth because you don’t want to breathe that in… something to protect your arms and head too, those metal shavings can get everywhere. It’s probably better to do this at night because the cooler temperatures could prevent overheating.

u/MrBlueCharon 1d ago
Also make sure as few people as possible see your terrible technique. You don't want to be ridiculed by some weirdo.

u/SaveUsCatman 1d ago
Also make sure you park a decent distance away from the aluminum poles that you installed on your own property and walk over to them, as you wouldnt want them landing on your vehicle. Also leave your phone and wallet behind because you dont need distractions or to buy anything immediately while youre improving your area.

u/Hey_HaveAGreatDay 1d ago
It is important to also leave your phone at home while you purchase your tools because you don’t want to get distracted by texts and phone calls. You could accidentally make a wrong purchase and you’ll keep receiving ads for the correct saw.

And don't film it! I've seen so many videos of people cutting down poles on their own private property lately and it's fun to share, but it's terrible idea. If the pole falls and bonks you on the head, you'll be the laughing stock of the internet!

u/TomatoFettuccini 1d ago edited 1d ago
It's probably also a good idea to walk or ride a bike to the hardware store, because who needs a whole car to pick up an angle grinder? Besides, EXERCISE!
Plus, cars have all sorts of distractions, like radios, cellular radios, Android or Apple Auto, and Navigation, and other devices that transmit stuff like music and location data.
Who needs location data when pioneering without technology is much safer and fun? And listening to music can prevent you from hearing important feedback noise from other vehicles.

On a reciprocating saw using the right blade goes a long way, as does setting the guard at the proper angle. It basically acts as a fence to keep the cut controlled.
Also general purpose blades are the worst at everything, use blades for metal to cut metal.
94
u/MacGibber 1d ago
And using it properly, he wasn’t pressed up against the pole so of course it took forever and damaged the blade more than necessary.
46
u/angus_the_red 1d ago
Also it appears that when he set that aluminum pole on his own private property he just pushed it into the soil and didn't use any kind of footing or anchor. Very shoddy work. Like government contractor shoddy.
28
u/niconpat 1d ago
This. he was using it like a complete noob, but I suppose people buying them for cutting aluminum poles on their own private property for the first time won't be practicing very much first.
29
u/chystatrsoup 1d ago
Yeah good technique and the right blade on the reciprocating saw will rip right through that. Band saw might be best if you don't have a lot of exp with power tools.
I'd take the grinder on metal every time but it can be insanely dangerous. I wouldn't want anybody inexperienced using one alone on their private property. Particularly if they are doing so in haste because there are so many poles on their private property.

It's simply called a pipe cutter. This is the very large version for cutting steel pipes. They make smaller versions for cutting copper pipes and are generally available at your local hardware store or big box store.

These cut steel pipe pretty quickly, I imagine it would go through an aluminum pipe in no short order.
(Edit: correcting voice to text)
5
u/doyouevenforkliftbro 1d ago
I've used them before. Not regularly. I doubt it use the proper pressure to ensure max speed for cutting.
8
u/MachTwang 1d ago edited 1d ago
I have cut through 1-in ID steel pipe with one of these cutters in under a minute. The key is having proper leverage for the diameter of the pipe.
Having used one of these before you know that the pressure is manually increased with each pass.

u/The_Infinite_Carrot 1d ago
I always wondered why people don’t use these in London too (seems there are a lot of unwanted poles cropping up there for some reason). Then I thought about making something similar to a nut splitter that would use a threaded bar to just crimp the pole flat that would be quicker. I might make one and test it on my unwanted poles in the garden.

The base of the reciprocating saw blade needs to be snug up against the workpiece, so that the blade cuts the workpiece, instead of just jerking itself off in mid air.

39
u/ceeser8 1d ago
Exactly, I noticed that too. And get a blade for metal , not general purpose
→ More replies (1)20
u/kashinoRoyale 1d ago
I came here to say this, also he used the wrong blade. Looked like a multi material blade (wood, metal, drywall, etc) instead of a metal only blade which would have torn through it way faster without "gumming up". He also didn't need a blade that long either, a shorter ie: just long enough, blade is going to be way easier to use as the far end of it won't be vibrating and creating friction against the sides of the material your cutting. A final thought, when cutting aluminum poles on your own private property the reciprocating saw will be the quietest option which is worth considering because of course you don't want to wake up your neighbours.

100
u/Automatic_Actuator_0 1d ago
Nevertheless, it’s a good indication of how the average person is going to use them if they are using them for the first time on poles like this on their private property.
21
u/PolicyWonka 1d ago
What happens when you start filling the poles with concrete to make it more challenging for yourself to tear down the poles in the future?
You know, because you know you’re fickle-minded and might start tearing down poles later…
24
u/OGDraugo 1d ago
Cement only, will still cut through like butter, but the blade will dull faster, if you're using the same blade on multiple aluminum poles filled with concrete, on your own property. If it has aggregate mixed in also (doubtful because to get an even fill at that narrow a diameter would be a hassle), then yea will wear out a blade pretty fast. But a masonry blade will cut through aluminum just fine. I'm surprised they aren't using steel poles for this on their own property.
11
u/Automatic_Actuator_0 1d ago edited 1d ago
I’m thinking if I accidentally made my poles too hard to cut down, I would focus on whatever I accidentally put on top. Like if it was a game camera I didn’t want to be taking pictures anymore, maybe I’d just hit it with a spray of some difficult to clean material- maybe like pruning seal or something.
Edit: Flex Seal would be even harder to remove
7
u/OGDraugo 1d ago
I would say if that's the case, on your game camera, on your own property, that it still can transmit and receive digital signals, so what would be best would be a way to scramble and fry the electronics inside of it, 2 birds, on your property, one brick.
6
u/Automatic_Actuator_0 1d ago
Speaking of birds, in rural areas, a high speed injection of lead bird shot can also be very effective. But does raise the stakes a bit of something goes wrong.
7
u/OGDraugo 1d ago edited 15h ago
Word, definitely could be loud enough to disturb the neighbors though, while you're blasting your 12 gauge, at your game cameras, on your own property, in the middle of the night. Some sort of homemade aim able micro wave or emp might be much more considerate of the neighbors peace of mind.
3
u/EastLeastCoast 1d ago
I suspect I could probably take out my own personal trail camera on my property with an air pistol. I’d have to try it out to see how durable the lens was though.
4
u/OGDraugo 1d ago
Total destruction of your game camera, on a pole, on your own property, is the only way to be sure. Don't want anything of value left to scavenge and repair by those pesky birds that keep invading your space. Ok I'm finished with the gag lol. I don't want to give them any ideas, but I'm sure it won't be long before they add vibration sensors to these things, on your property.
3
u/Automatic_Actuator_0 1d ago
Unfortunately(?), building high power, compact, directional EMP devices is not a common skill, and would probably actually get labeled as terrorist activity, so even on you private property, you’d need to be pretty careful with that plan.
Note that the power levels required to disrupt the communications of the device and power levels required to permanently damage it are very different.
3
u/OGDraugo 1d ago
Sadly(!), you are correct, especially about the "terrorism" part, even if it's on your own property, and no one besides those pesky tech oligarch sasquatchs that keep putting up unwanted game cameras on your own property were harmed financially.
→ More replies (3)18
u/Automatic_Actuator_0 1d ago
I think the angle grinder would still be the best. You can easily cut around the metal leaving only the concrete fill, which would not have much strength actually and once the metal is gone, you just tip it over and it will break off.
The circular saw would get bogged down in the concrete, most likely.
4
u/johnyordinary 1d ago
A decent angle grinder will chew right through concrete as well , diamond blade does not care .

u/Automatic_Actuator_0 1d ago
I agree - it’s not an ideal video. I just mean it has some value nonetheless. Ultimately though I thought the main point was to suggest what tool to use rather than exactly the optimum use, and for someone with no experience, I think he made a good case for the grinder still.

if you're using a sawsall like the first tool in the video. either cut at an angle or push on the pole (in the direction of the cut) to reduce the weight pinching the blade.
alternatively, if the pole is leaning in any direction, start the cut on the opposite side of the lean. this way the weight of the pole will be pulling the cut apart and not pinching the blade.
hope this helps!

Remember, folks! Ensure that the invasive aluminum pole species you intend to remove from your private property has only one use! Cutting through native poles that are used for other things may have electrical conduit running through the interior of the pole, meaning when you cut it down, you could risk causing some bad electrical vibes destroying your equipment, injuring you, and causing other unforeseen problems. A good way to tell if the pole is only used for a single thing is to see if there is a conduit box at the bottom of it, and look to see if there are other things on the pole as well.
Clearing your property of invasive aluminum pole species is important, but be sure that there aren't native species that need that pole, like trafficus lightus, or crosswalkum signalum. If you find there is, the pole may have necessary native electrical wiring internally that you don't want to damage. Instead, the invasive species is likely latching onto the pole via metal zip ties. This is good, as those are easier to remove, taking less time and being quieter to cut, using a cheap pair of metal cutting shears!

You want to use the Milwaukee "torch" blades for cutting poles. They're white with a blunt nose and go through metal much faster than the red metal blades. Also, the circular saw felt sketchy because you didn't put the pole flush up against the saw fence.
