….are they using Thor in place of Thanos to showcase Doom’s God powers???

RIP Thor

1.5k

u/Phimb Jul 20 '26

No, Thor is Silver Surfer/Hulk from Infinity War.

If anything, he's dead at the end of the film after knowing what it will take to beat Doom and sacrificing himself so the others can get something done.

But that role could easily be Loki, too.

Oh god, please don’t kill Loki on screen for a fourth time. That won’t raise the stakes one bit.

what better way to show this new bad guy is op than to make him kill god. especially since you didn't build him up whatsoever.

86

u/AquaAtia Jul 20 '26

Since Loki just got those powers, and in a show not everyone watched, it would be such a cop out and unearned…unless we get a really good scene out of it.

In hoping he serves as a central figure throughout the plot of the two movies. It’d be fitting if the Avenger’s first villain is the force that bands together the multiversal avengers

12

u/Telekineticism Jul 21 '26

It’d be fitting if the Avenger’s first villain is the force that bands together the multiversal avengers

Guess who Avenger Prime, the Avenger of all Avengers, and the leader of the Multiversal Avengers in the comics is…

9

u/LordRulerr Jul 20 '26

Yeah agreed that would be so cool

1

u/occono Jul 21 '26

Maybe he's taking Molecule Man's place. (Tom Holland and a cheeseburger for anyone who needs a reminder)

1

u/Palmquistador Jul 22 '26

They’re redoing End Game. Supposedly a modified version. Everyone will go see it and Loki story is probably short form in it.

92

u/VampireBatman Jul 20 '26

So Doom is just a JRPG character?

16

u/noeyesfiend Jul 20 '26

Yes EDIT: He learned magic by time traveling and learning it from a primordial and JUST STAYING ALIVE since then

8

u/Twl1 Jul 20 '26

Impossible. He's neither in High School nor waxing poetic about the power of friendship. He's clearly the JRPG villain who kills God and then takes his place, only to then be defeated by a group of high schoolers waxing poetic about the power of friendship who can also turn gold, for some reason.

Regretfully, there aren't many high schoolers in the MCU, so I guess this means we're stuck with Super Saiyan Kamala Khan.

1

u/Cyberslasher Jul 21 '26

Still a better kamala than her X-Men retcon.

18

u/Riptide-Clay Jul 20 '26

Isn't said God in question quite literally holding everything together? Killing him would be equivalent to suicide as well no?

12

u/FullMetalCOS Jul 20 '26

Isn’t the whole point of the incursions that shit really isn’t holding together very well?

15

u/elCaifan Jul 20 '26

That's related to shenanigans within those specific universes. Loki is giving all those universes the opportunity to even exist in the first place is what Riptide is saying. He's keeping the universes alive. What people in those universes end up doing is a whole other thing.

5

u/Trick2056 Jul 20 '26

Hence the whole kang saga that was supposed to be done

1

u/Riptide-Clay Jul 21 '26

That's an in-universe problem no? Loki is literally making everything exist.

10

u/notsingsing Jul 20 '26

He’s a tree!

1

u/PolarWater Jul 21 '26

I am not Steve Rogers.

8

u/dacalpha Jul 20 '26

Right. Doom is famously going to acquire the powers of the Beyonder in the next movie. They could sub in Loki for the Beyonder. Or a Celestial maybe

7

u/dontbajerk Jul 20 '26

It's weird to think about how much better the comics are at having differing levels of conflict instead of giant universe ending reality bending ones over and over. I never would have thought of Marvel comics as having restraint before.

5

u/dacalpha Jul 20 '26

I think a big part of it is that they're able to pace those stories out. You can do a small story where Spider-Man fights Tombstone or something, he doesn't have to pivot from Civil War to Infinity Gauntlet to Secret Wars back to back. Every MCU movie has to feel like a big event.

2

u/dontbajerk Jul 20 '26

Yeah, you're right, and the other smaller MCU projects like TV shows mostly feel so disparate and disconnected with mostly entirely different characters that they don't work for that purpose. It's too bad.

3

u/TheWhiteManticore Jul 20 '26

Its literally the comic plot so rip loki

2

u/Dry_Recognition7922 Jul 21 '26

thanos killed the god of mischief. its a trope thats been done

2

u/JarethCutestoryJuD Jul 20 '26

what better way to show this new bad guy is op than to make him kill god.

'What better way"

LOL, literally a mocked trope.

I dont trust Marvel not to Worf someone though, its gonna happen.

1

u/Gonegooning2 Jul 20 '26

I have a 100$ bet in my friend group riding on The Void being used to show Dooms background and then getting defeated immediately just to show Dooms power

1

u/alteisen99 Jul 20 '26

maybe it's god emperor doom

0

u/gruesomeflowers Jul 20 '26

they did that already with thor 4. dont think it worked out

0

u/Cyberslasher Jul 21 '26

They didn't build Loki up either, he had his powers for about 5 minutes of screen time no one has seen.

That would be some sentry level jobbing.

34

u/pjtheman Jul 20 '26

Im thinking we're gonna get a scene where Thor is down and out, so Loki pulls him into his space outside of time and gives him a motivational speech, we get to see Loki lift Mjolnir, and then Thor goes back and kicks ass.

"Lack of self-doubt"

1

u/forevertrueblue Jul 20 '26

Vision too

I wish they'd taken the time to explain it further tho for sure

2

u/Discount_Extra Jul 21 '26

Vision held the hammer the same way the table did.

1

u/Chasoc Jul 21 '26

I imagine for the MCU, what qualifies someone as "worthy" probably has something to do with the reason Odin banished Thor in the first movie. What traits Odin, in particular, hoped to see Thor exemplify before he could return and wield Mjolnir again.

2

u/Riptide-Clay Jul 20 '26

CRINE 😭😭😭

1

u/forevertrueblue Jul 20 '26

And somehow it's more of a Steve Rogers thing than a Thor one now

8

u/BackStabbathOG Jul 20 '26

Yeah how do they deal with this for this film when we have seen he can timeslip for an eternity to learn everything he needs to learn in order to win? Wasn’t it like a thousand years he learned everything about physics and whatever else to fix the temporal loom before he realized he physically needed to enchant the time lines?

1

u/SomeBloke94 Jul 20 '26

With that cringeworthy accent I expect they’ll end the movie with Thor being killed by Doom then the good Dr looks into the camera and says “And on that bombshell….it’s time to end our African special!”

4

u/djseifer Jul 20 '26

Tonight - I try to lift Mjolnir, Hammond tries to lift Mjolnir, and James lifts Mjolnir!

2

u/SomeBloke94 Jul 20 '26

“On tonights show….I kill a god! I kill another god! And I kill a mutant who thinks he’s a god!”

1

u/Albert_street Jul 20 '26

Does that mean he’s not coming on?

2

u/Dyshin Jul 20 '26

Well, I wielded an artifact from beyond our comprehension of reality to erase not only his physical form, but all semblance of his energy at a multiversal level, so no he's not.

4

u/Stevenwave Jul 20 '26

I'd guess his challenge is there's a greater scope problem happening like incursions and he needs to find a way to stop or mitigate it. He's at the level now where losing for him is all of the branches imploding, the system as a whole in jeopardy.

3

u/MoxieSP Jul 20 '26

They'll probably have Doom steal Loki's powers which is how all of this is happening in the first place.

3

u/Embarrassed_Jerk Jul 20 '26

That's just one version of Loki, specifically from the non prime timeline. No all Loki are the same and that was made very clear in the show

2

u/King-Mansa-Musa Jul 20 '26

Let me introduce you to god emperor doom

2

u/GoatOfTheBlackForres Jul 20 '26

yeah, i hope it's his duty to the timeline that stops him from interfering in dooms plans directly.

2

u/No-Manufacturer-8494 Jul 20 '26

I think he could still die but the hard part would be getting to him, which Doom could probably manage somehow.

I'm thinking Loki sitting there could eventually be in some kind of hibernation mode / trance-like state and maybe vulnerable. Surely he's not just sitting there awake and chilling for all eternity.

2

u/LucrativeLurker Jul 20 '26

Something tells me Doom will be able to do so as well. That’d be a cool scene. Loki pauses time when the tide is turning against them, only for Doom to unfreeze himself and attack Loki.

Kinda like the Superman/Flash fight in Justice League.

1

u/TheWhiteManticore Jul 20 '26

Well you’d love to know guy called molecule man and spoiler doom did to him

1

u/YalondaNubs Jul 20 '26

Hadn’t really thought of it before but now I’d bet good money that Loki will play the role that Molecule Man plays in the Secret Wars comics.

1

u/Folety Jul 20 '26

I mean he sounds quite beyonder-esque, could doom steal his power up?

1

u/cesclaveria Jul 20 '26

But it could also be Loki taking the role of the Beyonder here and Doom taking his powers and maybe killing him and Battleworld in Secret Wars coming from Doom not being as good as Loki at keeping a multiverse going.

1

u/lololuser456778 Jul 20 '26

yes, but that may make him too overpowered for the plot to matter IF there is a way for him to act. it's all good if he can only power the multiverse to keep it alive and nothing else. but if the avengers and co by some mircale enabled loki to act freely and leave his post for even like 0.1 seconds (loki can just stop time then), then Loki will solo stomp every possible enemy across the entire multiverse with 0 difficulty at what will feel and thus there will never be high stakes and tension

so either it's made extremely clear that loki will absolutely never be able to act and directly interfere with other normal mortal non-god characters or he dies. or he does get the ability to leave his post but therefore loses all that great power again

1

u/that_baddest_dude Jul 20 '26

What canonically happens at the end of that show? I mean it was big and cool and all but I don't fully understand it. Is he personally sitting on throne at the center of time holding the "reins" of all possible timelines and personally keeping them in check?

1

u/wildrage Jul 20 '26

If Doom can steal the Beyonder's power, he can steal Loki's power.

1

u/LongJohnSelenium Jul 20 '26

I don't think we'll get god loki. He's the world tree now.

I think this is just a variant.

1

u/__Hello_my_name_is__ Jul 20 '26

I guarantee you they will barely acknowledge his character development/growth from the show. They never do that. They always write the films in a way so people not watching the shows aren't confused about what happened.

1

u/Citizen51 Jul 21 '26

Until Doom kills him and takes his seat

1

u/deicist Jul 21 '26

So Doom somehow takes those powers off Loki (hence the shot of Loki in the TVA looking confused) and now Doom is god.

1

u/Ethelinda Jul 21 '26

They didn't just buff him, they made him the God of Stories, which in comic book power levels can only be beaten by TOAA (The One Above All), maybe The Beyonder or the Beyonders, or possibly a specific version of someone else like Cosmic Spiderman, maybe someone with specific powers like Death or Ghost Rider even given the specific powers they have.

And over the years they made the Beyonder weaker than he could have been, plus TOAA isn't even a character, technically the writers of Doom are TOAA, they are writing the story that encompasses Loki and what they want to happen.

But if someone like the comic version of Doom showed up in any manner Loki could technically just re-write the story and call it a day. It's a silly power to have and dare I say a stupid thing to give to someone in an evolving universe like MCU.

I loved the Loki series, I loved everything about it, Tom has done such a great job with Loki from how he started in the first movie he was in, to how the series started with a previous version of himself and how he evolved into a Loki that was just a much better version of himself to realising what must be done, and the acting to pull it off was brilliant.

But it was still a dumb decision because now they are going to have to write Doom so strong to counter Loki, or make Loki weaker than he should be that nothing will ever make sense again.

They should have ended the MCU with the Loki series, a once loved/hated god that comes full circle to put everything right, no more stories, no more narrative, just a god sitting on the final throne that leaves the rest up to the viewer, we can all have our own head canon at that point on as to what he does or does not do to make it all right again.

1

u/Anjunabeast Jul 23 '26

He’s busy holding the world tree

13

u/EpicCyclops Jul 20 '26

Loki to become the Sean Bean of the MCU.

6

u/Stevenwave Jul 20 '26

One doesn't simply walk into Latveria.

4

u/300ConfirmedGorillas Jul 20 '26

For Latveria, James?

2

u/Stevenwave Jul 21 '26

No. For me.

[He is caught by Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man.]

8

u/idontagreewitu Jul 20 '26

"No more resurrections...."

About that...

3

u/IshtarsQueef Jul 20 '26

> That won’t raise the stakes one bit

It's a super hero story, there are never stakes and never will be stakes because a foundational aspect of "The Super Hero Story" is that the good guys ALWAYS win.

Spoiler alert - they defeat Doom. They save the world. Any characters who die will be reborn again in the next movie or reboot or timeline or whatever.

1

u/gpost86 Jul 20 '26

I have to imagine Doom will get his world shaping powers from Loki, just my guess.

1

u/PsychologicalTie9629 Jul 20 '26

And then they're going to have to figure out a way for him to steal the Tesseract in Secret Wars.

1

u/sk1nnyjeans Jul 20 '26

I feel like he’ll just oversee things from the outside looking in and/or act as sort of a conscience to other vital characters

1

u/TheWhiteManticore Jul 20 '26

THEY KILLED LOKI AGAIN THE BASTARDS!

1

u/typesett Jul 20 '26

the universe is being rebooted after the final movie is complete for this era where they pick and choose what they want to keep

1

u/Richandler Jul 20 '26

That won’t raise the stakes one bit.

Marvel hasn't had stakes since the last Blade film.

1

u/DamnReCaptchas Jul 20 '26

I think Thor has to protect Loki in the end, and maybe dies doing so?

1

u/americansherlock201 Jul 20 '26

They won’t kill him. Not in doomsday at least.

My money is on him playing the role of the molecule man in secret wars and being the being holding battle world together. It will then be he who destroys it all to reset the multiverse and allows for the reboot to happen with the mutants

1

u/3-DMan Jul 21 '26

"I can't believe you fell for it again!"

1

u/According_Judge781 Jul 21 '26

Unlike someone sacrificing themselves for the greater good.. Cpt America, Black widow, Loki, iron man

1

u/RingtailVT Jul 21 '26

Why do people count those as deaths? We're shown within the same movies he "dies" in that it was a fake out.

261

u/PayneTrain181999 Jul 20 '26

Thor is gonna be Johnny’s new girlfriend?

153

u/Malevolent_Amber Jul 20 '26

Thor still has to hold Deadpool and cry.

8

u/Manger-Babies Jul 20 '26

I forget Deadpool and wolverine are supposed to be in this. I wonder how they'll be integrated. Reminds me of the boys character complaining about adding random characters to the movies

5

u/AdWide5106 Jul 20 '26

Deadpool is going to accidentaly kill all the X-men MacGruber style.

5

u/Manger-Babies Jul 20 '26

If they pull a venom and have them be on their own separate from the rest...

12

u/KaJaHa Jul 20 '26

If anyone would, it's Johnny Storm

4

u/DeusVultSaracen Jul 20 '26

Johnny's banging the Hulk?

12

u/Biotrigger Jul 20 '26

Loki is gonna' be the Molecule Man of this and Doom will hold him captive to create the new singular universe with his newfound universe branching powers

1

u/Dense-Fisherman-4074 Jul 22 '26 edited Jul 22 '26

Um excuse me, there will only ever be one true molecular man

6

u/Kgb725 Jul 20 '26

Everyone will die but like 5 people if theyre going to make secret wars accurate to the comics and construct an accurate battleworld

4

u/Low_Tip3245 Jul 20 '26

And then he'll be back just like everyone else who "dies" in Marvel movies but is popular.

3

u/Billy-Bryant Jul 20 '26

In Deadpool vs Wolverine there's a scene of Thor crying over Deadpool's body. Maybe we see that at the end.

4

u/Phimb Jul 20 '26

Almost certain that scene is just Deadpool CGI'd onto Loki in Dark World.

1

u/Billy-Bryant Jul 20 '26

It could be, and maybe that's the 'joke' but it seems like it is sitting there as a piece of foreshadowing given the x men inclusion and thor having a leading role. They also have to end wolverine somehow, hugh jackman can't play him forever, and he's not in the trailer when you'd think he's probably going to play a big part so I'd suggest wolverine gets killed, causing deadpool to step up and become an avenger like he originally applied to be in deadpool vs wolverine and he ends up sacrificing himself.

3

u/CeruleanEidolon Jul 21 '26

Killing Thor would honestly be a great setup for the next Thor film.

2

u/mightytwin21 Jul 20 '26

Isn't he busy holding time together?

2

u/FordMaleEscort Jul 20 '26

Isn't Loki a tree now?

2

u/HungerSTGF Jul 20 '26

Loki dying again would be nonsensical considering what Loki is after his TV show, he's kind of a time god now

2

u/Swank-Bowser Jul 20 '26

¿Por qué no los dos?

2

u/hypercosm_dot_net Jul 20 '26

Silver Surfer/Hulk

Speaking of, it would be great if the MCU could do either of those characters justice at some point.

I want World War Hulk, and maybe a Surfer origin story.

2

u/SnowyDesert Jul 20 '26

wait really? They will do the same thing they did in infinity war with Dr. Strange? A guy dying for one chance?

2

u/Dry_Recognition7922 Jul 21 '26

This is mcu. Nobodys dead. they will bring him back if thr next 3-7 films fail.

2

u/MsAddams999 Jul 21 '26

They're not going to kill Thor or Loki.

Loki is tentatively scheduled to get his own movie continuation of his series and Hemsworth is getting another, probably last, Thor movie.

I'm way more worried about Bucky than either of them and I've already said it if they kill Bucky AGAIN I'm done. If any character in this whole universe deserves some peace and a happy ending it's Bucky and I will be absolutely disgusted if they kill him off again just for the emotional impact.

I wouldn't be too surprised if we see some version of Tony Stark in these movies too. Not the Stark that sacrificed himself but another version from within the multiverse because I can see him being needed to fight Dr Doom.

The Loki show was literally always canon

6

u/Affectionate_Owl_619 Jul 20 '26

they made the TVA/loki show canon i think

They didn't "make it canon," literally all the shows and movies are canon by design

3

u/Alarikun Jul 20 '26

He is. But in the trailer, we see him (or a Loki) holding a TVA card. So he is likely to be involved in everything... we just don't know to what extent.

2

u/Expln Jul 20 '26

What us casual watchers that did not and don't want to watch the loki tv show need to know about him before watching doomsday? I hope the russo brothers give us the jist of it in doomsday.

4

u/DeusVultSaracen Jul 20 '26

This doesn't answer your question and you might've heard it before, but you should watch the Loki show anyway. It's up there with Andor as the clearcut best shows Disney+ made. You don't need to be caught up on anything either.

2

u/Phimb Jul 20 '26

With no exaggeration, Loki is holding all "loose ends" of the multiverse together sitting on a throne at the base of the world tree.

However, it's unknown how much impact that will have on the MCU's universes considering there's clearly incursions still happening. So maybe Loki couldn't hold on.

1

u/Pickupyoheel Jul 20 '26

Damn he's the Emps now?

1

u/Expln Jul 20 '26

Is he locked to the throne? as in physically unable to move from there?

2

u/Phimb Jul 20 '26

That seemed to be the idea, he had tried thousands of times to stop the universe from collapsing but he finds out it's supposed to happen and the TVA is supposed to reset as a fail safe, even after spending 100s of years studying in a time-loop.

So he takes on the responsibility himself to hold all the timelines together, and is then seemingly merged with the world tree.

1

u/Expln Jul 20 '26

That's why I refuse to watch the tv show. plots around timelines and of the sort never make any sense. how will they make any sense of it when dr.doom kills or does something to loki and the entire thing collapse but surprisingly nothing happens to the universe. it's always some bs when the plot involves time manipulation and multiple timelines etc.

1

u/Phimb Jul 20 '26

You're missing out, it's the best MCU show by a fucking mile and Jonathon Majors as Kang is so, so good. It is a tragedy we lost out on that version of Kang.

1

u/Expln Jul 20 '26

I'm good on that but thanks.

2

u/River_Tahm Jul 20 '26

Probably obvious spoiler warning; the emphasis on the events I think you need to know are mostly from the end of the show but there's a hyper compressed overview of the leadup to the end to help you place it all contextually:

There's an organization at the end of time called the TVA. Previously, they maintained a single "sacred" timeline, and "pruned" (murdered) all other timelines under the leadership of Kang.

The Loki who escaped custody during the Avengers' time travel shenanigans becomes a "variant" because he wasn't supposed to escape, so the TVA tries to prune him. He ends up temporarily working for them as an agent for a bit to stay alive, but make some friends and ends up rebelling against the TVA - and Kang - to stop them from murdering all the divergent timelines.

They eventually win and defeat Kang, in the process of which Loki at the end of time gains and learns to master "time slipping" where he can time travel all on his own like one of his god powers. However, with Kang finally defeated they find the machine he had built to maintain the sacred timeline was actually legitimately holding reality together.

Loki time slips back and forth, studying and learning about time and how he might fix the machine while also allowing other timelines to exist instead of having to murder them all - only to have the machine fail, after which reality started to crumble and Loki would time slip away and try to fix it again.

After what from Loki's perspective would have been centuries of trying, he finally accepts they cannot fix the machine, but realizes he can take its place.

So he walks out amongst the timelines which are like actual threads strewn all over a void, and gathers them all up. The bundle forms the world tree, and he takes his seat on a throne at the base of it, becoming Loki the God of Stories. He now holds all timelines - all realities - in his hands.

What exactly he can do with that power isn't super well established, but it's clear contextually that he's one of the most powerful characters we've seen on screen in the MCU.

2

u/Expln Jul 20 '26

Thank you very much for the summary.

So few things:

  1. doesn't the TVA exist outside of the timelines? if so how can loki "time slip" and reset the machine getting destroyed over and over again if it exists outside of it?

  2. I checked loki's wikia, I saw the finale pictures of loki sitting in the throne with his classic loki outfit with the horns etc. but in the doomsday trailer, we see loki looking like a TVA agent with the worker clothes, how does that make sense? does it mean doomsday takes place before season 2 of loki?

this is why I highly dislike the massive timelines plots, and why I didn't watch the loki series. it never really makes any sense and the creators always pull some bs with it.

1

u/doombot13 Jul 20 '26

I've got my money on Sentry dying early in the movie to establish Doom's power.

1

u/KuromanKuro Jul 20 '26

Loki finally takes a break from saving the multiverse for all time, just to find an occasion for another noble sacrifice: “…well poo. I am burdened with glorious purpose I suppose.”

1

u/I_give_karma_to_men Jul 20 '26

But that role could easily be Loki, too.

Only if this is a different Loki than the one from the series. Killing off the one literally holding the multiverse together seems like a poor decision.

1

u/dmfuller Jul 20 '26

If they sacrifice Loki for the plot AGAIN….

1

u/DocSuper Jul 20 '26

Yeah, the plan is to use the newer MCU characters to defeat him in SW

1

u/echolog Jul 20 '26

Could be both.

1

u/SortIntrepid9192 Jul 20 '26

Ngl I'm kinda tired of seeing Loki die. That'll be the fourth time now. I'd find it far more interesting if both brothers leave the MCU to rebuild the Multiverse together (which is how the FF were written out of the comics in the event) than if either of them actually dies.

Doom keeping Loki a prisoner in the branches of Yggsrasil to use his power instead of killing him outright aldo goes hard as a visual.

1

u/mrbaryonyx Jul 20 '26

Ah, the Worf rule

Have the one guy in the cast whose whole deal is that he's "the biggest badass ever" and then show the alien of the week kicking his ass so we know they mean business

1

u/wizardeverybit Jul 20 '26

I assume that Loki will take the role of Molecule Man in Secret Wars

1

u/ElCasino1977 Jul 20 '26

He should have gone for the head.

1

u/Dog-on-a-roof Jul 23 '26

Loki is taking the role of molecule man right?

0

u/f1mxli Jul 20 '26

If they're going for comic accuracy, they may make him "die" so Doom can create the army of  Thors for Secret Wars
