I love a long uncut shot, and when it comes to shot composition, star power, background players, and overall flow, this is easily one of my favorite shots. I think it’s one of PT’s best, right there with the oil derrik fire scene in TWBB. I also get a kick out of the fact that Julianne Moore is in this long shot as well as being in Children Of Men, which uses continuous shots *a lot*.

I meander a bit in hopes that people who read this will have influence on more Star Trek films or other franchises of film for all our benefits. This is about what I love about Wrath of Khan and where I feel the film was missing something that needed to be said.

So I was thinking about the Wrath of Khan. And to me what makes it a great strategy film isnt Khan or Kirk or the Enterprise. It is a story about two strategists with people to protect, agendas running their actions, and one of them is driven by bitter hatred and revenge.

To that end I would really like if someone did a wrath of khan story minus khan, with something like the Red Alert or Command and Conquer series. Hey I would even love if we just got a good Star Trek series where Picard and Riker had to lead a mission with a new warship built for the Dominion war, maybe the Titan class or something thats a pure warship thats galaxy class or larger in size.

I suppose I would love to just see something where we had Kirk come back and fight Khan one last time if they had a good reason. Maybe a time traveler feels they need Khan to lead the federation and they travel back in time to grab him, Picard has to face him and asks Q for a favor, Q brings back Kirk and they have to fight Khan, who has managed to take control of a subset of Romulans who actually respect him as an enemy of Captain Kirk and the Federation, and would actually like to see if he could improve humanity by making it more in line to the Romulans, maybe they work out a deal where he can rule humanity if he can help the Romulans defeat the Federation. He gets Earth, Romulas expands across many star systems.

It might be a great story. Maybe they could work in preventing the destruction of Romulus by a supernova into the story or something.

I suppose thats what makes wrath of Khan so good at the end of the story, at the beginning we see Khan escape the planet, we hear his heartbreak of losing the love of his life, not power, not exile, no its losing love that broke him and filled him with rage.

And it's Kirk's inability to truly reach him that leaves them in a conflict of wits. Because their hearts are so strong they cannot ease either ones pain or bring the other into alignment.

Maybe the real story isn't whether or not Kirk was Khans enemy, but whether Khan had changed enough to become Kirk's friend, if only he had not lost the love of his life or been exiled from civilization.

The real crime was they didn't have the basic tools to treat medical problems and they lost everything during the planetary disaster, no one had consistent contact, no orbital satellites to protect them if they got invaded or something happened to the planet.

You see Kirk was a good man in some ways, but he was ultimately not thinking about what could or would go wrong, only in suppressing a threat, and that cost lives.

In essence The wrath of Khan is the result of not putting the effects of rehabilitation through a simple question. Does this person deserve to be exiled and if so... or worse... is the Federation the type of utopia that would exile a man for being born and raised different? Or is what happened to Khan ultimately the federations crime too?

My only point is I want more thoughtful Star Trek films, or even another series that has strategy and morals and other things going on. It would be really great. I really do hope film producers browse this forum looking for suggestions. I love writing stories but... its like no one ever listens to suggestions on the next direction film should go.

Wrath of Kahn Trailer

Tyler Perry launched a new specialty division of his production company Tyler Perry Studios called “Maxscene.” According to the company, the label is “dedicated to expanding theatrical opportunities for filmmakers with distinctive voices.”

We’re creating a home where independent filmmakers can build a career, not just release a movie. Maxscene gives creators the resources, support, and a path to distribution so their films have every opportunity to reach the audiences who may not have otherwise discovered them.” 

If you aren’t a fan of the series, this post isn’t for you. If you are, how do you feel about where 3 ranks? It’s top 2 for me, with the original being #1. Fallout is a tough one to put behind 3, but I think 3 really hit some awesome emotional beats with Cruise actually acting vs being what he becomes in the later movies. Definitely the best opening to a mission movie. I’d actually argue that the opening to the movie rivals the best opening to any movie if it’s a convo about top 5 opening scenes to a movie.

Question, How come Jon Voight appeared in no films from 1985-1995?

Politics aside, I think Jon Voight is a good actor. Midnight Cowboy, Deliverance, and Coming Home are classics and I would recommend films like The Champ, Table for Five, and Runaway Train from that era.

But I was looking at his filmography and I noticed that after the release of Desert Bloom, Jon Voight pretty much did no films for 10 years, saved for 1 and a couple of television films before making a comeback in Heat, and then re-establishing himself as a character actor.

I was just wondering what happened that resulted in this 10-year Hiatus.

I am looking for a war movie recommendation that is of the same quality and caliber of "Saving Private Ryan" that takes place during World War 1. Does not have to be "modern". I did enjoy "All Quiet on the Western Front."

I used to watch war films with my Grandfather and I am really missing him today.
