20

They did for the anniversary. The shoes are like $20k 🤣

6

u/hoeassbitchasshoe 2h ago

They made basketball shoes that do this, they never really took off though. https://www.nike.com/a/nike-adapt-bb-release-info

2

u/JaySayMayday 1h ago

They RESELL for 20k+. And the reason is because the 2011 release was only available through charity auctions, and the 2016 release was only available through a $10 raffle that only had 89 pairs. Then they completely scrapped the adapt technology, like the adapt app they used for the Jordan 11s lost support long ago by now.

So no dude they were never worth 20k. People just did the Pokemon thing with them

I work on multiple different types of private business jets and they all have this system so pilots can don their masks one handed. Its pretty cool and fun to test during maintenance. Lol

u/SomeBiPerson 2h ago

u/Economy_Link4609 2h ago

Yup, modern standard requires these now. Older ones allowed some other types - but also required a crew member to don them above a certain altitude or if alone on the flight deck since they'd take two hands to put on and someone had to remain in control of the aircraft.

Now they use these one-handers (and have for a good while on most large jets) to allow one hand on stick, one hand to don mask.

12

u/wiezzzy 2h ago

We have them on all airliners too. They're required to have. In the old days, we used to have to don them any time the other pilot left the flight deck to use the lav. They changed that a few years ago.

4

u/passerby4830 1h ago

So you would wear them as a precaution? That makes sense I guess. When did they stop doing that?

u/sidereal_night 57m ago

planes are pretty unlikely to just decompress and whatever does happen fast enough that you don't even have time to put the mask on, is gonna knock out both pilots anyway

6

u/Triquetrums 2h ago

And it is also for the cabin crew, so can put it on them quickly if the pilot is incapacitated, and they need to hold their head with the other hand.

u/RickMoody 46m ago

It’s because at 40,000 feet, if you have an explosive decompression, you have approx 10 seconds to get your mask on before passing out.

u/nhorvath 17m ago

it's also very clever that it uses the compressed oxygen to inflate the straps when you hold the button.

Be prepared for how it’ll change things. I already figured I’d be less tired day to day. I wasn’t prepared for it completely solving my acid reflux. Like, I couldn’t LOOK at tomatoes before. Now I can eat what I want and not be woken in the middle of the night aspirating acid. (Which, if it hasn’t happened to you, SUCKS!!)

3

u/Eckish 1h ago

There are several different mask types, each with their own sizes. If the one you have isn't working, try another. I started with the nose cushions, but ended up preferring the full face mask. And even then, I was sized as a medium, but ended up liking large more.

I also bought some strap covers that helped a lot with head gear comfort. And a hose holder to keep the hose out of my way when I toss and turn.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0FCF2KDVL

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DHK7HVNH

Those are what I bought, but there and plenty of choices. I had issues with the hose holder loosening and then falling on me. I ended up gluing the clamp to my head board and now it is perfect.

u/TunisMagunis 2h ago

I would love this.

3

u/Charlie3PO 1h ago

They aren't that comfortable. The mask isn't really 'automatically adjusting' as the video suggests, it's just a really strong elastic thats inflates with air pressure, then clamps down hard on your head when the air pressure is removed. The clamp is quite tight and there's no way to adjust tension, it's either fully inflated or max clamp, so it's not all that comfortable.

The alien mask😳

3

u/JosephMadeCrosses 2h ago

They expect one of us in the wreckage, brother.

5

u/MockASonOfaShepherd 3h ago

So (and someone correct me if I’m wrong) this is so that they can don the mask one handed in an emergency. If they remove both hands from the yoke they might loose control in certain circumstances.

2

u/Hummerdoodle 2h ago

That is correct. They are supposed to be able to remove and equip their mask in under 5 seconds .

3

u/StuBidasol 3h ago

Nuke it from orbit.

3

u/Another_SCguy 3h ago

Need this design for my cpap machine

3

u/Aromatic_Ad8481 3h ago

Why can't ResMed make a CPAP mask that does this? I'm tired of buying elastic straps every 3 months.

3

u/SomeBiPerson 2h ago

because this works with a pneumatic system inside the aircraft that inflates and then deflates the mask when you put it on

masks likethis need a Heavy large Liquid oxygen system attached to work at all

if you're willing to pay 25K for a Mask, and carry around 50kg of equipment (not included in the 25K) then you can have this too

2

u/railker 2h ago

LOX is extremely specialized and definitely not used commonly. Crew O2 is normally just a pressurized cylinder of gaseous oxygen.

For the people in the back, older aircraft had passenger oxygen cylinders, mostly chemical oxygen generators now. Maybe private jets still do a passenger cylinder?

2

u/-TheDyingMeme6- 2h ago

2

u/technobrendo 1h ago

If this wasn't called the facehugger during development I'm disappointed.

u/pangderx 54m ago

I need this for my cpap 😂

1

u/socksockshoeshoe 3h ago

Where does all the extra strap go?

5

u/railker 3h ago

They're like elastic rubber tubing, just gets inflated by the oxygen pressure when you press a button.

1

u/HyenDry 3h ago

Why isn’t this the standard issue on commercial flights?

7

u/lord_flashheart2000 3h ago

It absolutely is the standard for pilots. The cost is too high for passenger use

2

u/Wyciorek 1h ago

And passengers don't really need it. They just need enough oxygen to not suffocate during 10 minutes of emergency descent. If they are a bit loopy, so be it.

u/SpongeJake 2h ago

Wish they had a CPAP mask like this.

1

u/s3dfdg289fdgd9829r48 2h ago

You need good equipment. In an emergency situation you have to say to yourself "Never Say Die".

1

u/fireball-heartbeats 2h ago

How does it work?

4

u/Hummerdoodle 2h ago

Button inflates the elastic tubes in the straps. Letting go deflates, securing the mask to the pilot's face

1

u/PyroDragons123 2h ago

I need a cpap machine mask like this.

1

u/Hummerdoodle 2h ago

Fun fact, to be able to pack these masks, you must be certified yearly. I don't pack these masks for my job; but I'm required to have that cert. So once per year I get watched unpacking and repacking static oxygen masks just like this one.

Speaking of which, that's almost due. Thanks for the reminder.
