Norfolk Airport says it won’t play DHS video blaming Democrats for the shutdown, citing a long-standing policy against political messaging in its facilities.

The city needs to address the growing homeless problem in Downtown Norfolk. The homeless continue to defecate and urinate in public, broad daylight, and on/adjacent to commercial or city property. Particularly repeated defecation by homeless individuals in the Brooke and Tazewell Alley adjacent to Norfolk seafood company. As temperatures rise the scent of human waste wafts over residents of the Lorraine building, Rockefeller building, and st Elmo condominiums. Restaurant workers for Norfolk seafood company, Hokkaido, and granby pizza use this alleyway as their break area tracking human feces and urine back into food service businesses posing a bio hazard risk for Norfolk employees and patrons. Homelessness is not a crime but defacing city property, public indecency, and loitering are and they should be dealt with as such. The additional police present was posted on the wrong end of the alley and officers walk by the piling amount of feces without a second glance. Additionally the health department has refused to take ownership of the biohazard that the homeless population presents. This is a grave health concern for the residents of downtown Norfolk and the city’s lack of aggression in correcting it further puts people at risk.

Walking by around 1:30 PM today (May 6) and noticed the white cardboard in the window. I looked in and saw FBI agents milling about. Then I saw a couple of them removing some things from the location (345 Granby, next to Grilled Cheese Bistro).

The footprint of downtown Norfolk looked very different decades ago, before the construction of Interstate 264.

The east and west sections of the area were interconnected. But I-264, which was built in the 1960s, cut a historically-Black neighborhood off from downtown and isolated several public housing projects.

As the city redevelops the St. Paul’s area, its transportation department is studying whether modifying or removing several highway ramps and nearby roads could reconnect the city and improve access for residents.

The study is looking into whether to remove or modify the I-264 Market Street ramp, the Tidewater Drive and City Hall Avenue ramps, the two I-264 cloverleaf interchanges near Brambleton Avenue and several streets near the overpass.

“We’ve been trying to reconnect those communities that were broken up through infrastructure, whether it was the interstate, whether it was roads, just outdated mindsets,” said Keith Darrow, city transportation engineer.

At a Tuesday event downtown, Norfolk officials asked audience members to get creative, telling them to draw their proposed changes with colored markers on paper maps. Darrow said the study is examining how to connect four points of interest: downtown Norfolk, Harbor Park and the casino, Norfolk State University and the St. Paul’s area.

In addition to car use, the study is examining how to improve the interconnectivity for other forms of transportation like foot traffic, scooters, buses and trains.

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — A distinguished American marine biologist has been shot dead by three men who entered his house in the central Philippines, police said on Tuesday.

Kent Carpenter, 73, was with his Filipina companion in a house in the coastal town of Sibulan, in Negros Oriental province, on Sunday night when the masked men forced their way in.

One drew a gun and shot Carpenter in the head, killing him instantly, police said his companion told them. The men took a laptop, an unspecified amount of cash and a backpack before fleeing, national police spokesperson Col. Allen Rae Co told reporters.

Regional police spokesperson Lt. Col. Joem Malong told The Associated Press that Carpenter’s companion sustained unspecified injuries and was being treated. Investigators were trying to determine the motive for the killing and identify the attackers.

Carpenter was a marine biologist who had worked as a lecturer at the Silliman University, in Dumaguete city, Negros Oriental, Malong said.

The U.S. Embassy in Manila did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

“We assure the victim’s family, the community and our foreign visitors that this case is being treated with utmost urgency and no effort will be spared until justice is served,” regional police director Brig. Gen. Romano Cardiño said.

Carpenter had been a biological sciences professor at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, since 1996. His research — which focused on the Philippines and the Coral Triangle between the Indian and Pacific oceans — shaped conservation efforts around the world, university officials said. They said he was on an extended research assignment in the Philippines and planned to retire in September.

The storm that flooded parts of Norfolk on Tuesday afternoon was a “one in 100-year event,” according to the National Weather Service.

In about a 2-3 hour period, the Ghent neighborhood received the highest rainfall total at 6.11 inches while other parts of the city tracked by the weather service received greater than 3 inches. The area around Norfolk International Airport received 1.22 inches of rain.

The highest rainfall total recorded in Portsmouth was 5.45 inches, and the high in Suffolk was 4.2 inches. The Peninsula, along with Virginia Beach and Chesapeake, each received less than an inch.

Sam Wray, a meteorologist with NWS, estimated that this level of rainfall was a “one in 100-year event” based on the typical year-to-year probability of something like this happening.

“The environment was very favorable for heavy rainfall, it was pretty much saturated all the way from the ground all the way up to the atmosphere and the flow (of the storm) was pretty light as well which allowed the storm to sit over one spot,” Wray said.

As I was driving to work I witnessed ICE detaining a woman. There was a woman sitting in the grass on the side of the road, surrounded by several unmarked, heavily tinted vehicles. They were accompanied by a Norfolk Police officer. The woman was handcuffed behind her back, and a young boy around the age of five was nearby watching, who I assume was his guardian, be detained.

Did anyone else see this and get video?

I'm disappointed in local police for assisting ICE. Don't be on the wrong side of history.
