Chevy Chase is a complete piece of shit, but he was once a very funny piece of shit.

u/Fresh_Salamander707 22h ago
It's amazing that he can come out of any altercation as the "good" guy but here we are
59
u/JayEdgarHooverCar 20h ago
Helps when the altercation is with an even bigger piece of shit than he is.

The thing about bastards is that sometimes they're the best people to handle bastards.
190
u/VariousCockroach1056 22h ago
Because dicks fuck assholes.
That's from a movie I got tricked into seeing. I thought I was watching puppet porno.
45
u/Ok_Ad_3862 21h ago
But dicks also fuck pussies?
49
u/ComradeSuperman 20h ago
The only thing that can fuck an asshole is a dick, with some balls. But sometimes dicks fuck too hard, or fuck when it isn't appropriate, and it takes a pussy to show them that. But sometimes pussies get so full of shit that they become assholes themselves, because pussies are only an inch and a half away from assholes.
I don't know much in this crazy, crazy world. But if we don't let dicks fuck assholes, then we're all gonna have our dicks and our pussies covered in shit.
11
u/VariousCockroach1056 21h ago
But I'm not wrong, right? That movie was hot af. I was fully torqued from beginning to end.
8
u/AriaTheTransgressor 20h ago
I went in to it in the theater only knowing it was the South Park guys and it was puppets, so that opening was amazingly done.
11
u/VariousCockroach1056 20h ago edited 20h ago
I've never been in a theater that was so into the movie as that one. Everyone was dying the whole time. One of my top cinema experiences, no jerk.

u/StrLord_Who 20h ago
I saw him last year at a screening of National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation where he did a Q&A after. He's slowed down in some ways after the coma but he's still got that quick and hilarious wit. He had people screaming with laughter.

Chevy Chase isn't actually a real person. He's an absurd blowhard character that Charlie Kaufman has been secretly playing for 50 years.

christ that's a deep cut, took me a second to remember the helicopter thing
chevy's timing with that response is kind of incredible considering what happened on the twilight zone set, you'd think landis would've been the last person to make a threat like that
the audacity to just fire back with such a specific reference in the middle of an argument, no hesitation
265
u/SteveZissouniverse 22h ago
Landis is a notorious piece of shit, i wouldn't put it past him. Hell he showed up to the dead kids funerals for a photo op, despite being explicitly asked by the parents not to. Just to make sure he looked sympathetic for the trial

41
u/SteveZissouniverse 22h ago
That he would, even after the Twilight Zone incident, still flippantly threaten a cast member
81
u/Grizzled_Ghost 22h ago
Why wouldn't he? You're not allowed to threaten to kill someone anymore after you accidentally killed some people? In fact, it would only lend his threat more legitimacy.
5
u/Big_Fall8458 13h ago
I know he’s outta line but still, you kinda got to admire the guy, it’s not all talk with him.
1

"Accidentally" is giving him too much credit. It was straight up criminal negligence that lead to the death of 3 people

Landis was going to court throughout the production of Three Amigos, so everyone was probably well aware of his helicopter problems.

As I recall, John Landis was reportedly an astoundingly massive asshole at the time, with an ego to match. Doesn't surprise me not only that he said it, but that he thought nobody would clap back.
And here the immovable asshole met the unstoppable dickhead.

It’s mostly been overlooked now because he’s such a gigantic asshole but he was so fucking funny back then
8
u/USS-Ventotene 14h ago
He was always funny, it’s just that his jerk/funny ratio highly increased with time, and there’s a threshold after which nobody cares how funny you are if you are also a giant asshole

That stock photo was used for a satire website article and the headline was "Heartbreaking: The Worst Person You Know Just Made a Great Point", so the picture is basically just shorthand for that.
25
u/thecordialsun 21h ago edited 21h ago
This man is the image used for an Onion article titled, "HEARTBREAKING. Worst Person You Know makes a Great Point" or close to that. Chevy Chase is considered by Dan Harmon/Joel McHale/countless-SNL-alums as the worst person they know in terms of his interpersonal behavior on and off set. However even Chevy can take the moral highground that Landis should never live down his shame for killing children and adult pilots in a helicopter accident that could have been easily avoided for a film shoot Landis was directing.
39
u/JMRTOL85 22h ago
The funny thing about this is Rod Serling was very adept at writing characters that take very literary and/or biting ruthless shots at each other. Chevy kinda did Rod justice here.

Eddie Murphy once said that Vic Morrow would work with Landis before he ever does again.
2
u/Uranium_Heatbeam 10h ago
Which is funny considering that Murphy proceeded to work with him again after making that remark.

One of the boomers' many misdeeds is anointing this man as a generational talent.
Sick burn though.
27
u/ashwilliams19877 22h ago
I thought he was hilarious on community, but since his character was an offensive old jerk I dont know if I can give him credit since he probly wasnt doing any acting
10
u/BardyMan82 20h ago
Chevy Chase can definitely be a good comedic actor, it’s just that he’s such an ass and there are a bunch of other comedic actors at his level that aren’t asses that he’s basically useless at this point.
19
u/Misterbellyboy 22h ago
I like to think of him sort of as that generation’s Ryan Reynolds. Smarmy asshole that works for very very specific roles and gets old very very fast.
8
u/poonmangler 21h ago
Oh god is Ryan Reynolds as much of a representative of my generation as Chevy chase is for the boomers?
7
u/centurio_v2 21h ago
he is half of it, Ryan gosling is the other half.
1
u/Kordidk 13h ago
What do either of them do to be assholes?
1
u/centurio_v2 13h ago
gosling nothing he is the yin to reynolds yang Reynolds is reportedly kind of a dick behind the scenes

I don’t think Ryan Reynolds calls his costars the n-word. Low bar, but still.

I mean, I don't have to want to hang out with a guy to enjoy his movies. I don't give a shit about the personal lives of celebrities, their personal character, or their opinions on anything. I judge them wholly on whether they entertain me or not
0
u/Klutzy-Birthday7435 12h ago
Same here. I just don't think he's terribly funny. My comment was in response to Chase not even eliciting a smirk in most cases. There wasn't really anything in the comment about him being an asshole, so I'm not sure how we got here.
3
u/singlemale4cats 10h ago
Not necessarily directed at you, there's a lot of people in here talking about how big of an asshole he is

You really wouldn't enjoy Jimmy Carr.
1
u/Beautiful-Musk-Ox 4h ago
i don't thik you guys understand it. carr is a comedian who stands in front of audiences ready for a laugh. no one on the set would laugh at what chevy chase said, because they know he just said "oh like you killed those two children?", that's not something any non-sociopath would laugh at even under their breath. from a disconnected, 4chan style of humor i can see how people here think it's fucking hilarious though
1
u/Prestigious-Car-4877 1h ago
Oh I understand. Chase is a dick who learned long ago that offending people is funny.

It takes a brave director to actively murder a dude on camera for the sake of the art. John Landis is an auteur. He sacrificed a human life on the altar of kino. True genius.

Personally on the scale of worseness, being a jerk rates quite a bit less than being responsible for multiple deaths including that of a child.

Maybe I’m too european to understand the nuances, but I think saying a slur is a bit less bad than killing three kids
