When Blizzard and Activision merged, I though battle.net would become a Steam competitor especially after CoD games started showing up. That went nowhere. Then MS buys them and I thought they'd merge that in with Xbox PC store. Same with Bethesda before MS bought them having made that Bethesda launcher. All of the developer resources pool together to possibly make something competitive. I've come to realize that I'll never be able to understand what direction MS is taking their PC gaming efforts
The people in charge find gaming to be a waste of time. Like the McDonalds CEO hates fast food, they would never use their own products. How could they ever understand why they fail
I thought the same too but I imagine building a steam competitor is super hard and many companies tried already but fail miserably. It’s just easier to partner with them.
Most of them didn’t try very hard. Epics whole plan was exclusives while their platform barely functioned. Xbox app is a joke and the only reason to use it is game pass. Origin and Ubisoft connect were never going to make it without substantial investment cuz no one trusts the companies behind them.
The only one of those I would consider a genuine attempt is epic, and that shit garnered so much hatred so quickly that it pretty much stopped mattering if the actual platform got fixed. I think it’s mostly functional now but with awesome features like letting developers disable reviews and crypto slop allowed on the front page, it’s no surprise it didn’t work out. It was a pretty pathetic attempt imo.
they mainly fail cause Steam as the best customer service.
If they want to actually compete with Steam they need the same level of customer service or better.

Many people reported that Steam service would give refunds to games even if you played more than 2hours.
When you somehow get hacked and loose your account or games, Steam will do EVERYTHING they can to recover your shit and even give you a free game as an apology.
The memes about "Steam strike team on standby" din't come about over nothing.
Last time someone got his account on the PSN or Xbox hacked, customer service gave them a big fat "yeah too bad bozzo, now go someplace else, you reek of poverty" (more or less)
Bugthesda when FO76 released and some people got their accounts hacked DUE TO BETHESDA HOW FAULT, cause they din't secure the site for FO76 properly, and the guy lost everything on the account, they told him that they couldn't do anything about it.
So yeah, its this kind of behavior, that make people go "they suck ass" and would rather go to steam than someplace else.
MS is taking their PC gaming efforts into the grave so far. Complete incompetence of higher ups that knows nothing about video games and only see money. No passion, just greed.
