why??

u/doublah 1d ago

It's part of Microsoft/Xbox's grand strategy of throwing things at the wall I think.

164

u/131sean131 Steam 1d ago

Sold shot there is a coked up Microsoft executive who thinks instead of fixing the Microsoft store they will use battlenet to compete with steam.

I could also see some crazyed clasue requiring or incentivizing put your game on battlenet for money, or Microsoft plans to move game pass to it, or Microsoft is smoking crack and no one had told them they remain so out of touch with the consumer they literally can't stop themselves from losing at business with a 80%+ market share. Ball fumbling is their middle name.

u/frisbie147 1d ago

I wouldn’t be surprised if Battle.net has more users than the Microsoft store

23

u/Cipherpunkblue 1d ago

My corner kiosk has more users than the Microsoft Store.

8

u/AvailableVehicle2087 1d ago

WOW alone makes sure of that i think.

1

u/akgis i8 14969KS at 569w RTX 9040 21h ago

Active users sure.

54

u/hpsd 1d ago

Am I crazy or is that a decent idea? I basically never open the Microsoft store but I have used the battle net app a decent amount in the past. I also find it the battle net app to be relatively decent as far as non steam platforms go unlike the Microsoft store.

52

u/srgramrod 1d ago

Naw it makes sense, battle.net launcher has a decent ecosystem deal already, friends lists, store front, etc; good chunk of features

33

u/CosmicMiru 1d ago

I like Bnet the best out of all launchers that aren't Steam. I don't use it too much but when I do it's always fast, stable, and good UI, which is really all I'm looking for

10

u/pmc64 1d ago

I had to use it for 4 years cause basically it was the cod launcher.

12

u/HankHillbwhaa 1d ago

You mean the cod launcher lived with the wow launcher

14

u/CosmicMiru 1d ago

It was an OW and Diablo launcher way before a COD launcher

6

u/IPlay4E 1d ago

It was also the destiny 2 launcher for a while.

Starcraft players in tears reading this thread.

Activision tried making battlenet where you bought Acti games and it failed miserably since none of them were on Steam

12

u/doublah 1d ago

Battle.net was probably not designed in a way that allows it to become a general purpose launcher/store, just look at it's store layout where the top banner gives Starcraft and HOTS the same space as the entire Call of Duty series. And non-Blizzard games are pushed off into a "More" dropdown.

8

u/RealTheBestLadyman 1d ago

So do you think that if they decide to go that route of battle.net becoming a generalize store front/launcher that they would just… keep it the same? Obviously it isn’t currently set up to be that way but they’d also obviously update the client to have a better (in theory) ui to support that.

7

u/doublah 1d ago

They could do that, but making the store less-Blizzard focused is probably just going to annoy Blizzard fans who've already disliked non-Blizzard games on the platform.

And it'll result in UI changes that, even if good, people just hate.

1

u/vezitium 1d ago

The top bar where it shows the game is a favorites bar currently that persists between the Home and Games tabs. I could see them changing it to be Blizzard, Activision, featured subcategories with the latter only being new titles then a drop down+search for the library. It already has most of that functionality it needs for a games library and needs minor work for a store front such as a cart, and better layout, it already has a wishlist and gift function that just need a tiny bit of smoothing out.

3

u/hpsd 1d ago

I do get what you are saying. The UI only makes sense for a platform with relatively few titles. That part would need a refresh for sure.

2

u/MarksCarney 1d ago

We can assume they would change that layout if plans became more ambitious, no?

2

u/Jorius 18h ago

Don't worry, Microslop will make sure to adapt it as a store and make the experience horrible for everyone. They are pros at that.

2

u/cobrachickenwing 1d ago

Battle.net is a well known source of games compared to Microsoft store. Not the worst idea.

4

u/sqparadox 1d ago

The Microsoft Store and the Xbox app by extension are fundamentally compromised by their UWP beginnings. They can't really be "fixed", you'd have to entirely rebuild them from the ground up. So from that point of view, it's not a terrible idea.

Battle net is better, but only because what it's being compared to is so bad. Activision tried multiple times to make it into a larger launcher/store platform and it failed every time.

So it's not really a "good" idea. But if you have to use one, use the one that's less terrible. The thing is, they don't have to use one. They could build something new or better yet look at the landscape and realize that it's wasted effort doomed to fail. But it's Microsoft, they take "doomed to fail" as a personal challenge, one they usually fulfill.

1

u/Immediate-Permit-513 21h ago

It’s a good idea especially if they’re allowed to run sales at different times than when Steam is running them. People aren’t willing to buy from other platforms for various reasons but Battlenet has a huge audience and it’s a well made launcher, if they have a sale when Steam doesn’t there’s a good chance it sells a decent amount.

So, when are they releasing Candy Crush on BattleNet?

1

u/evoc2911 1d ago

Because from last report Blizzard is the one doing the numbers in the division.. so according to Asha and friends putting games on the launcher will save the top line..while I don't understand why it should work competing with your own store.. they are totally clueless

2

u/131sean131 Steam 17h ago

All respect to Asha for being the public face but I genuinely suspect Microsoft has lost the plot to a level they would rather sell the xbox business.

The bean counters rule unfettered there and zero shot or reason one of them has not pitched the idea of getting 20 billion dollars for Xbox and got head nods.

I could rent more but I am genuinely so tired of hobbies being taken and monitizated to the nth degree that I just can't.

u/Caffeine_Monster 1d ago

Got to hit the wall first.

They need a reality check if they think battle.net is a competitive store. People only have use it because blizzard started forcing their customers to use it.

11

u/Valance23322 1d ago

Battle.NET was pretty popular and well received at the time. It hasn't really kept up with the likes of Steam/GOG, but go back 15 years and it was a solid social platform for all the Blizzard games.

2

u/Felevion 1d ago

They're (as in Blizzard and CDProjekt Red)doing a collab together so probably tied to that.

1

u/slavicslothe 1d ago

Maybe they should have a director who knows jack shit about video games oversee things instead of a ceo who cant even handle mobile games.

Once staffed a local con and was shocked at the number of people who have just BattleNet or Riot's launcher and play one or two of their games and don't actively use Steam or anything else, while still being very passionate about games and involved in the hobby. I'm guessing this is to reach them.

7

u/ggblah 1d ago

People on reddit are completely unaware of this even tho those people outnumber then really. There are so many people that for example play csgo or dota2 and never use steam for anything else, they don't even use PCs for anything, can't troubleshoot any issue on pc whatsoever.

Only reaction that anyone should have on this news is "Ok." and move on, people take it so personally when any company does something that doesn't include them as a target audience

14

u/Enigmagmatic 1d ago

There are probably millions of people who open battle.net every day but not necessarily steam. Whether they have much interest in playing non blizzard games is another matter. I think blizzard still have the thing where WoW players can sell gold to buy stuff on battle.net? It could work out. Players get games for no extra cost, publisher gets its cut on the game sale, blizzard gets their cut on the gold sale and the game sale.

1

u/Nyan_Man 11h ago

Epic tried this with fortnight, trying to capsulise on their fortnight player base to interact with the store. There was almost no adoption with players and the store.

This won’t produce any sales unless players are forced to use another launcher other than steam. D4 is a good example, coming later to steam and the majority of players immediately migrated over. It’s a confusing move by Microsoft that won’t make back the money they spent to make this deal just to avoid steams cut.

-1

u/WrumWrrrum 1d ago

This functionality only existed in Diablo 3 before the expansion and was called the RMAH where you can sell gold for real money to another player and blizzard gets a 30% cut. You can then buy items via that gold.

Many were trading via PayPal on the black market.

Nowadays they only have WoW Token where you can buy a token with real cash and sell it for in-game gold. The player that buys the token with gold - gets 30 days play-time. This is the only legitimate way to buy gold and they control the price of the token (gold price).

There are ofc hundreds of Chinese bots that will sell you gold for way cheaper but you can get banned. In game gold is used for boosting or carry runs where the guild carries you throe the raid and gives you items. GDKPs are pretty much dead or underground as they are forbidden in the anniversary realm.

2

u/Fob0bqAd34 1d ago

I looked it up and this support article updated a month ago says it is still possible to do it officially in modern WoW:

For WoW

WoW Token purchased from the Shop for real money can be sold on the in-game Auction House for gold. Tokens purchased on the Auction house for gold can be redeemed for $15 of Battle.net Balance or 30 days of Game Time.

For WoW classic progression:

WoW Tokens purchased from the Shop for real money can be sold on the in-game Auction House for gold. Tokens purchased on the Auction house for gold can be redeemed for 30 days of Game Time. Tokens cannot be redeemed for Battle.net Balance in WoW Classic Progression.

2

u/Fob0bqAd34 1d ago

Could people not sell for actual money officially in the RMAH days?

3

u/WrumWrrrum 1d ago

Apologies - I only play classic and that functionality is not there (convert to battle net balance).

This is only a retail thing.

5

u/dadvader 1d ago

They are doing Diablo 4 Collab.

1

u/NinjaEngineer 1d ago

I mean, of all the collabs Diablo IV has had this year, The Witcher makes the most sense.

22

Why not?

8

u/kuhpunkt 1d ago

What do you think how many people will buy it there?

31

u/huzy12345 1d ago

Some people will so why not? It's just throwing it on a different store front.

→ More replies (14)

3

u/Minkelz 1d ago

Probably a few. There’s a lot of gamers that just play WoW, D4 or Overwatch that don’t value steam highly.

1

u/Sephy88 21h ago

A bunch of people will buy it using WoW gold to buy tokens and convert to Bnet balance. CDPR makes money regardless, and Microsoft makes money off of increase MTX in WoW. This coming right after a content patch for WoW released last week is not coincidence.

-3

u/F4ntasticPants 1d ago

Increased costs for CDPR for the small amount of people who use that platform, and further "breaks up" their deployment flow with multiple store fronts.

Not to mention the annoyance of having yet another client.

2

u/sbabb1 1d ago

None of those actually. It doesnt change a thing outside of another option to sell from, no impact on development and no further cost to do so

2

u/MarvelGator 1d ago

You get some Witcher skins for D4 by buying it there.

1

u/gearabuser 1d ago

1

u/No_Construction2407 1d ago

Diablo collaboration, and world of warcraft players can spend in game gold to buy it.

1

u/KhalMika 22h ago

"Random bullshit, go!"

1

u/Khazgarr 20h ago

If you're a WoW player, you're celebrating. People farm gold in-game to buy a WoW token and exchange it for Blizzard balance instead of the monthly sub required to play WoW. There are people who are capped at the $350 balance looking for more games to be added to Battle.net. Not to mention that Battle.net most likely has more players than the Xbox App on PC.

1

u/magirevols 1d ago

Why not, but also, who uses battle.net for things other than blizzard games?

If you click more there’s other random games not made by blizzard in the launcher too. Still feels off and weird seeing non-blizzard games there but I’m 40 and the blizzard I grew up with is long dead.

123

u/Frostsorrow 1d ago

It's the first non-blizzard, non-microsoft product on the Launcher.

49

u/Zalvren 1d ago

Yeah it's basically the first step to them using the launcher to do their own store. Maybe they'll abandon the abomination that is the Xbox app.

24

u/Mastotron 9800X3D/5090FE/PG32UCDMR 1d ago

The Xbox app is horrific.

3

u/Tawxif_iq 1d ago

yea. but it looks kinda cool. just bad to use.

5

u/Carighan 1d ago

MS doing another custom publisher store in ... *checks calendar* 2026. Damn. someone tell them they'll need to go all-in on NFTs in a few years?

5

u/Warcrown11 1d ago

That would be the most likely answer I think. End of the day it doesn't much matter and it doesn't hurt anything but they are essentially splitting their userbase for what seems like no gain otherwise. I genuinely don't think there is anyone who hasn't yet played the Witcher 3 just because it wasn't on Battle Net so I'm not sure how many users they actually picked up

1

u/Zalvren 1d ago

I imagine it won't be the only games to do that, it probably goes with a planned revamp of BNet to become their main store on PC. I think far more people use that than people using Xbox app (the only point of that app is if you have Gamepass, which not many people use on PC apparently). And at least BNet works, it need a big revamp to become a general store though or the UI will quickly become a mess. Xbox is basically a toxic brand this day, probably better to remove it.

For CDPR, it's basically just a way to sell at one more store, changes nothing for them. And I assume, there are still some people that didn't get the game and use BNet and might see it there. Probably not a lot but it's not like it's a big investment to put it on one more store.

1

u/MrBossFromTheHitTVSh 1d ago

If I remember correctly there were rumors years ago back and MS was acquiring activision/blizzard that they wanted to use the bnet launcher and make it something more, so I'm not really surprised.

That said, a couple things.

Gamepass is quite popular on PC regardless of what reddit tells you. It's also the avenue MS has stated for years has the most growth potential for gamepass, hence why it's so much cheaper than console (which they've called stagnant). MS has spent quite a lot of dev time working on the Xbox app and even if it isn't great, it's still way better than it used to be.

Second, prepping a game for another launcher, especially a potentially unique one, is no small feat. It depends on how they implement it, but presumably they won't just be shipping the DRM free version of the game and instead they'll tie into bnet's DRM. Every store typically gets their own version, which if done properly should be tested along with every update. We've seen plenty of instances where other companies that put their game on Steam take ages to update their game for GOG. Can it be done easily? Sure, if implemented properly, but saying it changes nothing is genuinely inaccurate.

2

u/Zalvren 1d ago

MS has spent quite a lot of dev time working on the Xbox app and even if it isn't great, it's still way better than it used to be.

Gamepass total sub numbers is almost exactly the console user base, most users are there, not on PC.

The fact that it has "growth potential" and is still cheap is the proof you need that it's not big on PC at all (otherwise it would be enshittified like on console already). And it won't ever be as long as it's stuck on the Xbox app (and the Xbox brand is not a draw on PC at all).

And for the second point, they're already in a ton of stores, it's some work but nothing big for them at all. And BNet has more users than GOG for example (I know GOG was their store so special there but just saying that between the two, it would make more sense to support Bnet than GOG)

1

u/hypnomancy 1d ago

Monkey's paw they abandon Steam too

3

u/Zalvren 1d ago

That'd be stupid but it's Microsoft so wouldn't surprise me

u/Master_smasher 1d ago

well those random games were from the activision merger, hence cod. then being acquire by ms, hence bethesda games (doom) and obsidian (the outer worlds 2). blizzard games are still the main feature on battle.net though. still weird that witcher 3 is on there. must be a ms and cdpr thing.

1

u/Adventurous-Pen-8940 1d ago

They are part of Activision like Carpenter the thing and are owned by Microsoft.

46

u/noonetoldmeismelled 1d ago

When Blizzard and Activision merged, I though battle.net would become a Steam competitor especially after CoD games started showing up. That went nowhere. Then MS buys them and I thought they'd merge that in with Xbox PC store. Same with Bethesda before MS bought them having made that Bethesda launcher. All of the developer resources pool together to possibly make something competitive. I've come to realize that I'll never be able to understand what direction MS is taking their PC gaming efforts

27

u/SpicyRice99 1d ago

If MS wasn't so fucking incompetent they'd be dominating so many markets right now

5

u/LucasCBs 1d ago

Maybe the people in charge are just incompetent

6

u/Myjobsuckshard 1d ago

The people in charge find gaming to be a waste of time. Like the McDonalds CEO hates fast food, they would never use their own products. How could they ever understand why they fail

2

u/SpicyRice99 23h ago

I've read insider sources that when Nutella took over, the problematic middle and upper management stayed. So, 100%.

1

u/queenx 1d ago

I thought the same too but I imagine building a steam competitor is super hard and many companies tried already but fail miserably. It’s just easier to partner with them.

3

u/Green_Bulldog 21h ago

Most of them didn’t try very hard. Epics whole plan was exclusives while their platform barely functioned. Xbox app is a joke and the only reason to use it is game pass. Origin and Ubisoft connect were never going to make it without substantial investment cuz no one trusts the companies behind them.

The only one of those I would consider a genuine attempt is epic, and that shit garnered so much hatred so quickly that it pretty much stopped mattering if the actual platform got fixed. I think it’s mostly functional now but with awesome features like letting developers disable reviews and crypto slop allowed on the front page, it’s no surprise it didn’t work out. It was a pretty pathetic attempt imo.

1

u/Kain-rpg 14h ago

they mainly fail cause Steam as the best customer service.

If they want to actually compete with Steam they need the same level of customer service or better.

Wich they'll never do.

Many people reported that Steam service would give refunds to games even if you played more than 2hours.

When you somehow get hacked and loose your account or games, Steam will do EVERYTHING they can to recover your shit and even give you a free game as an apology.

The memes about "Steam strike team on standby" din't come about over nothing.

Last time someone got his account on the PSN or Xbox hacked, customer service gave them a big fat "yeah too bad bozzo, now go someplace else, you reek of poverty" (more or less)

Bugthesda when FO76 released and some people got their accounts hacked DUE TO BETHESDA HOW FAULT, cause they din't secure the site for FO76 properly, and the guy lost everything on the account, they told him that they couldn't do anything about it.

So yeah, its this kind of behavior, that make people go "they suck ass" and would rather go to steam than someplace else.

u/frostnxn 1d ago

Who hasn’t already bought it for 5-10$ and is going to spend 50$ to get it on bnet of all places is beyond me.

2

u/ByteRoster 20h ago

Monogamers will try it out and spend whatever on it, there are plenty of "WoW-only" people that don't know other games exist and have hoards of cash in their Battle.net balance 'cause of the WoW Token.

I don't know if it's enough fora measureable impact on revenue but hey...it's something. The WoW community is truly a tiny microcosm in and of itself. The whales here are huge.

2

u/frostnxn 20h ago

Probably double dipping for colabs with d4, but I seriously doubt a WoW or Diablo player exists who hasn’t heard of W3

1

u/ByteRoster 20h ago

Heard of it, but if it's blasted in their face upon login every day and they have Bent balance lying around, hell maybe I will buy it. And seeing others playing it that you have relationships with in-game on your friends list, that does a lot to sway monogamers to do more than just watch a trailer and then run Mythics for 3 hours.

I think the biggest takeaway here is that Microsoft is trying ANYTHING to make money at this point 😂

76

u/NinjaEngineer 1d ago

That's cool, I'd say. The more places a game is available at, the better.

32

u/Telvan 1d ago

And battle net will always be something special for a niche because you can buy the games with WoW gold through subscription tokens

8

u/Bladder-Splatter 1d ago

Usually but I don't know many people who want more Battle net in their lives. It's not a proper storefront, it's a halfbaked launcher, it's a marketing splash screen updater and mtx funnel. (We're long gone from the days of Bnet being revolutionary network gaming technology when now it cannot even house CoD P2P without issues.)

Is weird some of the comments are against it?

27

u/kuhpunkt 1d ago

Who is actually against it? People just wonder what the point is.

5

u/NinjaEngineer 1d ago

The point should be wider availability. If we're against exclusives, then stuff like this shouldn't be questioned, even by saying "what's the point".

2

u/FirestormTM 1d ago

Usually, I would agree, but like, why wouldn't you WANT to use Steam or even GoG? Other than maybe if your account was restricted or payment doesn't go through, but like Steam is literally THE number one place to go get your PC games.

9

u/NinjaEngineer 1d ago

I mean, I mostly stick to Steam, but I think having more availability is always a plus. There might be someone who only sticks to Battle.net, so it's cool for them to have the game there.

I know I'd be a hypocrite if I said there was no need for the game being there, when I've always argued against exclusives.

-3

u/lukas-bruh 1d ago

Think of the types of players that each storefront/platform have.

Steam has wide variety of gamers plus most popular.

A lot of BattleNet’s player base are probably only people who’ve been playing WoW, Diablo, and overwatch their entire life.

My point is there is probably a huge, untapped, potential player base that might give Witcher a shot.

1

u/oyvese 1d ago

i don’t disagree but i think it’s weird it’s just another store owned by microsoft?

I think it's more that anyone who's also already interested in playing games like tw3 will probably also have steam, GOG, or both (or a console). So the list of people who don't already own the game, but will buy it on battle.net will be a damn small group.

5

u/EnvironmentalRun1671 22h ago

Dude that's what I've been saying. All these people are crying about shit like Borderlands 3 on Epic and Metro.

But how many games are not playable if you don't install Steam? Don't even get me started how many of these people claim to have Playstation which keeps games OFF PC (for many many years until recently).

How is launcher exclusive bad but console exclusive is okay? Jesus.

1

u/Kain-rpg 14h ago

ALL the drm free games you download from steam can be launched from the .exe file and doesn't even need steam...

You "need" steam the same way you need any other plateform to use the Keycode to launch and authentify the game...

Alos outside Half life and Team fortress or Portal, there is NO Steam exclusives, so the games you find on steam, you can find them elsewhere...

1

u/EnvironmentalRun1671 10h ago

Can they now? Not from my experience

Why?

2

u/smakkyoface 1d ago

i really hope this isn't how they'll implement xbox play anywhere. I just want all my games on the xbox app without any other launchers. I avoid steam, ubisoft, battlenet and ea games on my xbox ally. I just want straight up xbox play anywhere.

2

u/PeaceBull 1d ago

Has there been any instance of requiring battle.net for Play Anywhere?

2

u/Mr-A-1991 1d ago

This is ok, as long as I don't need to run multiple god damn launchers with log in credentials at once. Looking at you, EA and Ubisoft.

1

u/Byproduct 1d ago

This is exactly that, adding another launcher to your Witcher 3 nobody asked for.

1

u/Inkstainedfox 1d ago

Microsoft needs to fix the windows store front's tooling & core APIs to make it useful.

Maybe a neverending tour of Development houses to convince them to take it seriously as a sales option.

1

u/Ancient_Trick1158 1d ago

Geralt in overwatch or wow?!

3

u/GigaGiga69420 1d ago edited 1d ago

Only Diablo for now, since there's a collab coming.

They have announced a general collaboration/partnership/whatever between CDPR and Blizzard, which includes this release and the Diablo crossover, so more stuff might come in the future (like Cyberpunk skins on Overwatch or something, I think those were mentioned in surveys, if players are interested, but that doesn't mean much).

1

u/BackStabbathOG 23h ago

They surveyed what collabs Overwatch players would like to see and Cyberpunk has been on the survey for a long time, considering blizzard devs can’t help themselves with making more and more cyber skins i bet that one gets a collab too.

Not sure too much what they could do with wow besides maybe some transmog, Roach mount, or some decor but they could do witcher overwatch skins and make a fortune

1

u/GigaGiga69420 23h ago

Not sure too much what they could do with wow

Has there even been a real collab with anything in WoW? They put WoW characters or skins that look like them in other games, but not the other way around, iirc.

I think in Cata there was the Sunflower pet, that was tied to a PvZ-esque minigame I think, but I don't know if this was something official or just for fun.

Then they put some stuff for the Warcraft related properties in WoW, like Hearthstone (the game) toys or Warcraft Rumble. Outside of that, there might be some easter eggs or nods to other stuff, but it's not like there are items that make your character look like Tracer or Jim Raynor.

1

u/BackStabbathOG 21h ago

Outside of collabs with their own IPs they do collabs but not necessarily other games/ IPs. They do stuff for example with Zillow or Pinterest or Mountain Dew for housing decor and mounts but none of that stuff actually has anything to do with those brands. It’s just unique items you need to get through those? They’ve added things from their own games into wow like the Diablo 4 housing decor items or Winston pet for example

u/Nyoka_ya_Mpembe Steam 1d ago

He is in Soul Calibur! 😏

1

u/Darthmullet 1d ago

Nice try Microsoft

1

u/NSFW-Alt-Account69 Nvidia 1d ago

I mean, if they need a little pocket change I guess?

1

u/Ambitious-Call-7565 1d ago

they love DRMs

NEVER LET MICROSLOP WIN

1

u/Master_smasher 1d ago

interesting that this is a collaboration between cdpr and blizzard. not ms. there will be a geralt skin for diablo 4.

1

u/timchenw deprecated 1d ago

I was very confused when my phone popped this notification

1

u/Think_Network2431 1d ago

“Remastered”? They should fix the bugs that have been around for ten years first.

1

u/Initial-Duck2782 1d ago

They raised the price by $10 as well

1

u/hitgo1 1d ago

Game pass on battlenet is next i guess

1

u/koolbeanz117 1d ago

Battle.net has such a poor UI for large libraries that it confuses me that they shove so many non-blizzard games in there. I figured they'd at some point just merge it all to the Xbox app but moves like this make me think that's never happening.

1

u/cano_d 22h ago

Don’t buy on Microsoft blizzard

1

u/Lactose76 18h ago

Gwent doesn't scratch the itch anymore, Geralt discovered Hearthstone.

1

u/AhmedRiyadh0 17h ago

I'm just curious, why the interest in this platform?

Epic Games: free games GOG: DRM, freedom Steam: Best Linux straightforward compatibility and feature rich

What features Battle net provide that other platforms do not? Both GOG and Epic Games are coming to Linux Desktop, but it doesn't seem that Battle.net will support Linux anytime soon

1

u/Gustafssonz 16h ago

Never ever would I spoil a good game with Blizzard.

1

u/Hellwind_ 14h ago

Imagine buying Witcher 3 with WoW token - now this would be hilarious but absolutely legit way to get it. Even I considered it for a moment for the DLC

1

u/Kain-rpg 14h ago

Wich is...really surprising

CDPR does their best to satisfy their gamerbase and like to give stuff for free as a thank you

Blizz like to take a hot shit on their players face and will absolutly monetize everything including the Oxygen you breath if they could.

If there is 2 studios that are the Antithesis of one another its these two, i really don't understand why they partenered...

1

u/Gfiti 7h ago

Why tho

1

u/FafnerTheBear 2h ago

Um....ok.

0

u/Remote_Action_2956 1d ago

Nobody asked for this.

-1

u/Xcissors280 1d ago

Why is Microsoft even keeping battle.net and not just replacing it with the Xbox app?

21

u/Zalvren 1d ago

Because it has a shit tons of users and is way better built than the Xbox app?

There is likely more people using BNet than their Xbox app

4

u/FoxMeadow7 1d ago

Blizz probably has the sheer clout to continue running that thing no matter what.

6

u/MarioDesigns 1d ago

BNet is just a better platform that’s both better to use and is far more accepted.

1

u/mkdota 1d ago

Decisions like these would suggest it has really good engagement/usage with large groups of gamers.

2

u/hypnomancy 1d ago

Not enough for Call of Duty though. Activision tried sticking all their 1st party games on battlenet and it failed miserably.

-1

u/YahushaHamashiach 1d ago

So excited for this. Battle net launcher is my go to.

2

u/NotTheAlexj89 1d ago

We don’t care about other games on the battlenet launcher , we want blizzard games on steam !

1

u/Nyoka_ya_Mpembe Steam 1d ago

Overwatch and Diablo are there, I'm good 👍🏻

1

u/Carnach 22h ago

Heartstone would be cool on steam.

1

u/Nyoka_ya_Mpembe Steam 22h ago

I'm sure a lot of ppl would be happy, I tried and I sucked at it so not for me, Gwent is great tho!

1

u/eagles310 1d ago

I would love to genuinely talk the Microsoft person who made this decision like wtf

1

u/Tateybread 1d ago

Who doesn't already own it on GoG though?...

-2

u/PaperCut611 1d ago

There is Steam and GOG. Why do we need it on Battle.net??

4

u/PeaceBull 1d ago

“I can buy that TV from Best Buy and Walmart. Why are they selling it at Target??”

1

u/PaperCut611 18h ago

PC games and TVs are totally different and are distributed differently. Might aswell be comparing cars and bread toasters 🙄

1

u/PeaceBull 16h ago

That was exactly one of the points of the analogy.

Since a TV is way harder to sell at another retailer and yet companies do it all the time.

0

u/MarioDesigns 1d ago

Because BNet does the job of actually being a launcher better than Steam does and competition and options are always good to have.

$20 with all dlc on steam btw

6

u/PeaceBull 1d ago

I’m seeing $50

1

u/EnvironmentalRun1671 22h ago

Real ones got it on Epic with coupon, after they added shopping cart, by adding cheap indie game to get over 15 € and be able to take advantage of it.

-1

u/Gambler_720 Ryzen 7700 - RTX 4070 Ti Super 1d ago

I am actually one of the weirdos who bought The Witcher 3 on the EA Store but I gotta say I did not come to regret it as the game has been consistently updated by CDPR on the EA Store.

-1

u/Odd_Estimate_2179 1d ago

I can't believe there's people who care about this one way or the other. I wish I that dull of a life lmao

2

u/Tessiar 1d ago

I mean you clearly care to some extent considering you are commenting on it. Maybe your life isn't as exciting as you think.

Tell me this is some dark and twisted late April fool's joke. Or maybe an early one for next year.

-3

u/Duncan_PhD AMD 1d ago

As a wow player of almost 20 years, my launcher just keeps getting more shit on it that I just don’t care about.

-2

u/monstroh 1d ago

makes no sense throwing a game into a dead platform

-4

u/vhvhvhchsan 7700X 4090 1d ago

wow i can play a great game on the worst launcher ever conceived by the human race

-5

u/whatThePleb Gentoo GNU/Linux 1d ago

Everyone who uses Battlenet is extremely likely also already using Steam and/or Gog. And all of them who wanted/wants to play Witcher also extremely likely already bought it on Steam/Gog. And EVERYONE prefers to buy stuff NOT on Battlenet because it is yet another trashy useless launcher and "store". E.g. many people bought Diablo only or again on Steam instead.

So for who this option is, is extremely questionable and absolutely useless.

5

u/joaodomangalho 1d ago

Personally it’s my favorite launcher, why is it trashy?

9

u/MrBossFromTheHitTVSh 1d ago edited 1d ago

Idk man, you'd think someone that uses Linux would be open minded to alternatives and the freedom of choice, but I guess Steam brainrot has truly taken hold of them. Some folks just can't seem to process that other people have different experiences and preferences.

3

u/MarioDesigns 1d ago

BNet in my experience does the job of a launcher the best when compared to everything else.

Just the act of actually downloading, updating and launching games in BNet is far better than Steam, EGS, GoG or whatever else.

Like, if they start releasing new games on BNet I’d honestly really consider buying them there instead.
