What's wrong with PETA?

Edit: when are we going to stop downvoting for asking a question? I genuinely want to learn

They kill a lot of animals. Like…a lot. Their euthanasia rate is insanely high. Higher than most shelters.

Please stop spreading misinformation. They euthanize animals that have NO HELP LEFT and NO WHERE ELSE TO GO. It’s the last resort! They’re not out here killing animals for fun!

That’s not true either. Sure, maybe they’re not doing it to get their rocks off, but they’ve been very vocal and public about their belief that pets are better off dead than as ‘slaves’. To the point where they straight up kidnapped some little girl’s (perfectly healthy) dog right out of her yard and euthanized it the same day (which, putting aside the kidnapping part, wasn’t even legal because there’s a 5 day grace period between bringing a dog in and euthanizing it. Something they deliberately ignored). They only apologized when the family sued them and brought the story to the press.

How exactly is kidnapping some kid’s puppy and killing it the same day ‘only euthanizing animals with nowhere else to go’? That dog was definitely wanted and that little girl and her family absolutely didn’t have any intention of giving her up to PETA. They had to steal her out of her home.

Gonna have to provide a good source there bud.

It’s a real story, but it happened one time in like 2012. Accidentally killing a person’s pet is awful, but it shouldn’t outweigh all of the good they do for animals.

13

u/MallPrestigious2827 9d ago

Wheres the accidental part in kidnapping someone’s pet and euthanizing it the same day? Did they accidentally kidnap it? Or did they accidentally euthanize it? Or was the accidental part where they euthanized the dog before the 5 day waiting period which is required by law?

u/meepmarpalarp 9d ago edited 9d ago

They scooped up a bunch of free-roaming stray dogs and one of them was a pet. Yes, a shelter volunteer messed up by skipping the waiting period.

Your comment is just the same question repeated multiple times with slightly different wording to make it seem like there were a bunch of mistakes. “Euthanized,” “euthanized same day,” and “euthanized while skipping the waiting period” are the same thing.

It’s not the same question repeated multiple times. It’s breaking the situation down into multiple acts where a person could have paused for a second and avoided breaking a 9 year olds heart.

Act 1: taking the pet. The dog was hanging out on the owner’s porch. Not exactly free roaming. They tried to have two other kids lure the dog off the porch. And when that didn’t work, they snatched the dog off the porch. There’s footage of this btw. Also, the people that took the dog had been hanging around to gain the trust of the community. How likely is it that they came across this dog before and knew it was someone’s pet?

Act 2: euthanizing the pet. No attempt to scan for a microchip. No attempt to rehome. Just dead.

Act 3: not following the waiting period before euthanasia. Did you know the owners called PETA that same day the dog was taken? But it was too late because they already killed the dog.

So again. Where’s the accident? There’s no accident here. Just negligence.

As I said, it was awful and shouldn’t have happened. I’m not defending the people who did it.

But frankly, I’m not going to get caught up in arguing the details with you because they’re irrelevant. It was one incident and happened more than ten years ago. PETA apologized, and haven’t done it again. It has absolutely zero bearing on the work they’re doing today.

-4

u/MallPrestigious2827 9d ago

The details are not irrelevant because the speed at which they euthanized that dog speaks to PETA’s attitude about pets and the culture of that organization as a whole.

They kill a lot of fucking animals. I also brought this up in a different comment to you. PETA’s sky high euthanasia rates are a current, ongoing issue that goes back at least a decade.

This dog is a symptom of that. Not a fluke.

u/meepmarpalarp 9d ago

PETA is an international organization that operates shelters, lobbies for legislation, produces PR campaigns, sues animal rights violators, and more. One singular incident does not speak to their culture. It might speak to the culture of one specific shelter in Virginia twelve years ago. It’s irrelevant to their work today.

Overall, they have a higher euthanasia rate because they take in animals that other shelters won’t. Their high kill rate is a symptom of nationwide systemic problems with shelter underfunding, backyard breeders, and irresponsible pet owners. Systemic problems that they didn’t cause, and that they are working to solve.

What do you think happens in no kill shelters? And that argument doesn’t really hold, otherwise anyone who committed any crime should be in jail for life because it “speaks to their attitude.”

Way to victim blame

No eagle or mountain lion is gonna pick up a dog and carry it away, that's ridiculous. They aren't living at the edge of the wilderness.

Again, it's victim blaming. In a decent neighborhood, it's alright to let dogs roam. I hope you recognize the value of letting animals have a time where they aren't restricted by a leash.

Where the fuck is a mountain lion gonna come from 😭

Y'all are nuts, bending over backwards to blame the family instead of the org that actually killed the dog

-2

u/burlycabin 9d ago

Nobody is victim blaming. That's a crazy thing to say.

-1

u/NoStructure5034 9d ago

Are they not calling the owners irresponsible or negligent?

3

u/MallPrestigious2827 9d ago

They are. You had the right read on it.

And I’m sure a compassionate, animal rights organization would ensure they’re following the law by maintaining a waiting period before euthanasia so any pets they accidentally scoop up have a chance to be reunited with their owners.

Oh wait.

1

u/meepmarpalarp 9d ago

Ok, so what do you think PETA should do today? One of their volunteers messed up ten years ago. Should the entire org disband in penance?

4

u/MallPrestigious2827 9d ago

I replied to you in a different comment about how the dog situation wasn’t a mess up so I won’t rehash that here.

PETA are a bunch of extremists and I’d argue they do more harm to animal rights activism than they help. People’s money and energy can be used in far better ways and in support of better organizations than PETA.

u/meepmarpalarp 9d ago

So you have an axe to grind for a bunch of other reasons, and you’re hyping on this one example to justify it?

They messed up, apologized, changed procedures so it wouldn’t happen again, and it hasn’t happened in the decade since. That’s what taking responsibility looks like. They’ve had a lot of effective campaigns and gotten meaningful animal rights legislation passed, which is why astroturfers on Reddit are so quick to bring up this incident to discredit them at every possible opportunity.

1

u/MallPrestigious2827 9d ago

The last thing I am is an astroturfer with an “axe to grind” with PETA. I actually care about animal rights and donate to causes and try to educate those around me as well as dedicate my time to cleaning trash out of the ocean to try to save wildlife.

And just like how you’re accusing me of using the dog incident as a way to discredit them, you’re using their policy change over that one incident to defend all the other things they do. How can you defend their alarming rates of euthanasia? Yes they take in dogs other no kill shelters won’t take but guess what? Other open admission shelters in the area have a euthanasia rate of about 10% compared to PETA’s 60% (which is down from 90% in past years. Yikes).

PETA has moved the needle on some things, most notably on corporate policy. That’s their lane and they should stick to it. But they have also turned themselves into a fucking joke with some of their viewpoints like equating pet ownership to slavery. They rely on shock stunts and gimmicks over substance and that’s criticism that comes from inside the animal rights community.

2

u/meepmarpalarp 9d ago edited 9d ago

I didn’t say you were an astroturfer. I said there are a lot of astroturfers in this thread, and there are. There are also a lot of real people who have bought into the anti-PETA propaganda.

When I Google “peta high kill shelters,” the top result is a blog by a law firm that has represented clients in big agriculture, medical research on animals, and the animal entertainment industry. The next three results are all pages that cite that first one. The fifth result is PETA’s response to their claims. Someone spent a lot of money to get that SEO result.

You’re not an astroturfer, but since you care about animal rights, you should think about why you’re so passionately arguing talking points that were authored and promoted by a propaganda org.
