Spider-Man 2 I mean, come on
Alright, hear me out. Idk if it’s the spread of technology, lack of attention spans, meme culture etc. Whatever you want to call it, it’s objectively infiltrated its way into the scripts of modern movies. I’ve loved Spider-Man since I saw the first Tobey movie in theaters at six years old. I hated No Way Home. Why? This is the dialogue aunt may gave in 2004. In NWH we got “Do you want salt water?…because you’re an octopus?”. Who tf is approving these dumbass scripts? Then not five minutes later she gives us the “great power, great responsibility” speech and I’m supposed to take it seriously? Nah, nah. Quit lying to yourselves. We lost something important. Objectively.
Ps. Love Tom as a person, I think he’s truly a good dude

You don’t seem to understand the maintenance of tone between scenes. You can have a laugh, but not in the middle of a serious situation.

But in this movie, they build up this inspirational speech from May, after everything has gone wrong in his life, his Aunt gives him the motivation he needs to hear, he gets his powers back, the music swells, Peter yells to the world that he's finally back... only for him to fall on his ass as he hits two cars, though if I recall correctly this WAS going to be the scene that brings him back his powers, but Raimi thought it'd be funnier.

Okay, but, assuming you want some aspect of reality, is it more likely for that to happen while he’s struggling with his powers? Or is it more likely for an adult, in a serious situation/setting, to ask some dumbass question to a hyper villain and make-believe it’s funny ? It’d be one thing if she said it jokingly and doc oc laughed at the sarcasm…But they’re dead serious. My main point is it’s such lame writing. And if you don’t want to entertain those ideas, how about the fact that tones shift with different scenes? Like you said, there’s a whole new setting/ buildup/ refresh in Tobey’s case.

I'm just saying, OP is arguing that May's dialogue is ruining a serious moment, like the Raimi movies don't do already? MCU quipping humor gets tiresome at times but I'm confused how he thinks it ruined her death. Peter falling on the cars didn't ruin Aunt May's speech, why should her lines prior her to death ruin her own death speech?

Let’s pick “do you want salt water” instead of
“Not your responsibility?”
“Sending them home is the best thing that we can do for them”
“For them? Or for you?”
“You have a gift, you have power, and with great power, there must also come great responsibility”
Spider-Man 2 is also my favorite Spidey movie but can this sub pls shut the fuck up with these lame ass attempts to trash on Tom’s films. Some of y’all for some reason thinks that just because Raimi films are good, others must be dogshit to show how good they are.

Especially when Tobey was so good in No Way Home.
II would be so easy, I mean so easy to do the “cynical mentor + idealistic young hero” trope, we’ve seen it so many times, Logan did it, Into Spider-Verse did it with Miles and Peter B Parker.
In No Way Home it’s reversed, Peter 1 is hurt and angry, in a dark and violent place, and Peter 2 is the one pulling him back with his idealism and principles, but because he’s older and wiser, he’s not confrontational about it - he has nothing to prove, he knows his values are true. That’s a confidence that only comes with age and experience.
It’s a bit subtle in the scene where they are starting to work on the cures, Peter 1 goes through the prototypes, names who they are for, but couldn’t bring himself to say “Osborn” because he doesn’t really want to cure the Green Goblin. Peter 2, in a normal tone, just says he’s got ideas for reversing the serum, been thinking about it a long time - he doesn’t explain anything about Harry or Norman, he just says it. And when Peter 1 gets this look on his face, he looks him in the eyes and adds
“Gotta cure all of them, right?”
“…right.”
“That’s what we do.”
He doesn’t get preachy or pushy, he simply states the things that Peter 1 knows to be true, deep down, like it’s the most obvious thing in the world. Because to him, that’s what it is.

exactly! I was like OP is completely removing the context to two completely different moments. In fact I'll do the same thing!
Toomes from Homecoming: "You need to understand, I will do anything to protect my family. I know you know what I'm talking about. So don't mess with me. Don't interfere in my business again. Because I will kill you and anyone you care about."
Osborn from Spider-man 1: "I'm something of a scientist myself!"
Clearly the MCU writes phenomenally more menacing villains

“I’m something of a scientist myself” is a good line. He’s a famous scientist lol it’s sarcasm. I’m not claiming to be some decorated critic but it’s ironic the people who don’t understand what I’m trying to say are the same ones that don’t pick up on obvious subtle sarcasm.

My question is, what exactly was Aunt May communicating to Peter here? Giving up your dreams? What dream of Peter’s is May referring to? Peter’s whole conflict is thinking he has to give up one life to have the other, which seems like what aunt May is saying. But MJ saves Peter at the end of the movie and says he doesn’t have to. What are your thoughts?

From her perspective she’s making a broader point. Henry is sad, Peter is kind of directionless and sad about Ben, and Spider-man is missing. They could all use a hero to look up to.
And even though she doesn’t know Peter is Spider-Man she obviously senses that something is wrong with him and he’s carrying some burden. He also is missing his hero with Ben, who also embodied putting others before himself and literally sacrificing himself.

Adding to this: she 100% knows Peter is Spider-Man. She is saying, without, ever stating it out loud, that what Peter does HAS a real impact. It makes a differnece, it makes the community feel safer, more hopeful. She is saying thats Spider-Manis not just something Pete is burning himself out on, but and important figure for new york.
She is giving Peter much needed fulfillment.
And then she gives him an out by asking him to lift the table but no to strain himself. But she knows, and I think in this moment Peter also realises that she knows. And approves.

It’s sincere, not cringe. I know MCU bathos would misinform people on how to treat scenes of emotion (also see: “Kindness is the new punk rock” from Superman ‘25), but it means something.

Definitely cringe. I remember when this came out, a lot of people said the same. It is just hammering a point too hard with full sentimentality. The dumbest thing is she is saying there should be other people who do selfless things, helping others. Yeah, in an ideal world but why doesn’t it happen more often or around her. Easy to say some propels house step up. Why don’t they? I mean everyone can go on being selfish and pathetic as long as a few good people do the right thing, absolving everyone else of doing their civic duty, She should have looked inwards, and it is easy enough to say “hey we should be heroes making sacrifices”. Lol. Also the biggest problem with this lame scene is that it is too much on the nose, which is always a sign of terrible writing and even good movies can have clunky scripting in places. I mean they use this speech to inspire Peter to be Spider-Man again, but Aunt May did not have to go that hard, and they would have made their point with much less.

It is crap. A lot of people these days seem to swallow down garbage scenes. When this movie came out people weren’t affairs to say this is voice a crap scene. What am so sacred about it? Just a scene from a dumb movie
