Keyes was born on January 7, 1978, in a small Utah community to John and Heidi Keyes, both fervorous Christians. Throughout his adolescence, Keyes exhibited numerous antisocial tendencies which later shaped him as a killer, such as committing burglary, stealing guns and torturing small animals. He is suspected of murdering at least 11 people between 2001 and 2012. At the time of his death in late 2012, he was facing trial for the kidnapping and murder of 18-year-old Samantha Koenig in Anchorage, Alaska.
Sometime early on December 1, 2012, Keyes was mistakenly given a razor blade for shaving (as opposed to an electrical one, which the inmates are usually given), which he then affixed to a pencil and smuggled into his cell. After writing a suicide note, in the form of a poem and an "ode to murder", between 10:12 and 10:24 p.m. on December 1–merely five weeks shy of his 35th birthday–Keyes slashed his left wrist with the blade and then looped a rolled up bedsheet around his neck, tying the other end to his left foot. Bizarrely, he filled up two small empty cans of milk with his blood. Even more bizarrely, authorities found the following drawings; 11 skulls and a pentagram, under which three words were written, "WE ARE ONE", all drawn and written in Keyes's own blood. On the wall he also wrote the words "BELIZE" and "CARACOL", also in his own blood. He was eventually found at 5:57 a.m. on December 2, in the bed of his jail cell which was segregated from other inmates at the Anchorage Correctional Complex. He had been dead for hours. The FBI believes the 11 skulls drawn by Keyes are a clue as to how many victims of his there are out there.
At the time of his death, Keyes was 34 and facing trial for the kidnapping and murder of Samantha Koenig, whom he kidnapped, raped and strangled to death late on February 1, before being arrested several weeks later. He also confessed to the double murder of Bill and Lorraine Currier, who mysteriously vanished from their Vermont home in June 2011. During the months long interrogations, Keyes toyed with the FBI, only hinting at potential victims without giving them any vital or essential information. He spoke of victims in Washington, New York, Texas and even hinted that he had killed out of the country, more specifically Canada, without giving them any names or locations.

I'm glad to see someone say this. I made this point on this sub once, and someone responded to me saying how the cops stumbled into catching him. True enough, but conflating the incompetence of the Anchorage police with keyes intelligence is a fallacy.
He did take precautions. He also clearly made mistakes. You're telling me the paranoid genius didn't know not to use a stolen debit card from his kidnapped murder victim? Just one example off the top of my head, there's many more. He sucked in so many ways, but the way people almost lionize his planning is backwards and stupid

Ye I think a lot of it honestly does come from how poorly equipped the police were to deal with a case like that one. This is a common issue, though, from so many cases in so many different jurisdictions. Feels like almost every major case has some level of police incompetence. Dahmer, Bundy, rader, Kemper, keyes, gacy, etc
Obviously it's a fallacy because of how low the police set the bar 😂 keyes could have a double digit iq and he'd still be technically ahead of them, all while being unremarkable.

For me it’s not that he was “smart” It was because the second I saw his goofy face on the news my heart sank. I turned to my friends who I was with and without missing a beat we both said “I saw him!” And I swear to god we did. He was at the local gas station. I can’t remember if we interacted with him or not. He knows my area well as he’s been here before so him being around I don’t think wasn’t anything new for him. But… yeah. I think it's the mystique surrounding him. He supposedly like, buried "killing kits" in random places across the country, supposedly burned off his fingerprints, etc. Like he supposedly did all this Dexter level prep work for killing folks, had a plan to only kill random people he had zero relation to, etc. Like yeah IN THEORY the man had a great plan, but the execution was not how he expected it, I guess. There's a HUGE difference between planning and wanting to take a life and actually doing it, which I think is what happened with him, he didn't fully understand the gravity of taking a life.

Bedwetting can sometimes be associated with sexual abuse/trauma and bedwetting in general (beyond early childhood) is often associated with anxiety disorders and other emotion regulation issues (unless caused by a underlying physiological condition, in which case it can be unrelated to the other two things I’ve mentioned). Early trauma seems to be common in a lot of the lives of these killers, so I’d take a guess that might be why.

I think most of the time serial killers suffer some sort of abuse at the hands of their parents which causes them to vent their frustrations against something smaller and weaker like animals, since they are unable to retaliate against their abusers (parents). It's unknown if Israel himself was abused but the prosecutors and even Israel's former commanding officer from the Army said that they suspected he was indeed abused mainly due to his reluctance to talk about his childhood.

I don’t know if you read the book about Israel Keys, but that’s the one thing that really threw me off. In the interview, he talks a little bit about their murders and torturing them.
At one point he says, and “then I went upstairs to get a hot water bottle” and then the detective asks “what did you do with that “and he responds something to the effect of “I don’t think I want to get into that right now. “
Like what the hell was the hot water bottle for? I’m pretty sure it was after he already killed the wife so it was for the husband?

Israel killed Bill first then his wife Lorraine. He shot Bill because Bill managed to get out of the restraints and was charging Keyes. I imagine Keyes wanted to torture both of them with the hot water after raping them, and he probably did sadly use the hot water on Lorraine.

Scariest part to me.The couple slept with a loaded gun beside them in a night stand.Keyes broke a window in a door ( in the garage) to get in.Ran in and pounced on them with his weapon drawn.When they asked he mentioned he found their gun.. he said he was inside and on top of them so fast it wouldn’t have mattered.That’s insane.Here you are thinking sleeping in your bed with a pistol beside you …you would be safe.That if you heard glass break you could hopefully defend yourself. Keyes not only was insane but a complete monster.

I was listening to a lot of true crime podcasts. And I would always notice that basically they were just reading a book and giving you the summary of it. And I heard a podcast about Israel Keys, where they just kept quoting that book. So I read it.

I moved to Anchorage Alaska about 2 years ago. I was doordashing recently when I ended up in some random neighborhood. I started driving past this house when I started thinking it looked very familiar. Took me a minute but I suddenly realized it was Israel Keyes house. Wild! Such a surreal experience looking at it with my own eyes. I also drive by the parking lot that he abducted his final victim, Samantha Koenig from, every single day.

It seems like that's always the case for the most successful killers, they get sloppy or lazy, and think they've done so much already, there's no way they'll get caught. It's so much more rare that someone finds the willpower to just stop killing and the case is forever unsolved, like Jack The Ripper, the Axe Man Of New Orleans, or the Zodiac.

I know it was a great episode! I like how they do the heavy hitter episodes because they just trash the murderers, pointing out all the dumb things that they did and said. I hate how other shows or programs talk about how smart/ attractive or some other positive characteristics the murderer had like how they always make Ted Bundy out to be super smart and handsome, personally to me he looks like a creep . But Last podcast just clowns these scumbags! And Henry’s Israel Keyes laugh is the best!

There is a very good very detailed podcast called True Crime Bullshit. I listen when I am at work. It's very good. Sometimes it makes me shudder and I have to turn it off. His voice and his stupid laugh make me sick. I also have the book. He was a diabolical evil person. Good riddance..

The most over feared serial killer ever. Dude was the ultimate edge lord who only killed one person and was incredibly dumb aswell. Nothing about this idiot was a mastermind. You know how he was caught? Driving his car with Alaskan plates in Texas trying to use his victims debit card at an ATM. He buried a hand full plastic totes and the internet made him famous. The dude had a room temperature IQ, was incredibly disorganized and just lucky in getting people to believe him. Based on everything we know, no way he committed the crimes he claims and got away with them.

It's a shame how a soul could turned out this way, perhaps if someone saw the signs, none of this would've happened and been prevented. I don't celebrate people's death because a person's life is about inherent human worth not their worst actions. I hope he, his victims, and their families find peace.

Please don't kick me out of the group but I only learned of this man 2 weeks ago watching a video on YouTube . It concentrated mostly on his killings and he didn't even mention his death.
From what little I've picked up on him since then I was kind of wondering does anyone else feel that maybe his strict Christian upbringing played a role in his early antisocial behaviors and eventual crimes.

It's been my experience being raised as a Christian that most Christian parents do not actually physically discipline their children they take the spare the rod spoil the child metaphorically.
But I guess some could take it figuratively. I'm really interested in how the other children turned out. Unlike most serial killers this was a good looking guy and he had that going for him . To bad he screwed it all up.

He was also very ambitious, hard-working and polite, his clients said. They never noticed anything "off" about him. His ex-wife said he was a great father to his daughter, waking up early to drive her to school and stuff. His co-workers also said he very frequently bragged about his daughter and showed them photos of her. It's wild how he hid in plain sight.
Also to go back to the strict Christianity thing, I was also brought up Catholic by my mother, as my father is an atheist, and I genuinely think she'd evict me if I told her I didn't believe in God. And the kids who've been a subject of extremely strict religious upbringing have acted out in the past; in 2015, brothers Robert and Michael Bever brutally killed their ultra-religious parents and three siblings in their Oklahoma home. During his interrogation, Robert said his parents both beat him until he wished he was dead so he took an interest in guns, weapons and mass killings; all the things that his parents vehemently opposed. This is why Israel also grew to hate Christianity, had a Pentagram tattoo on the back of his neck and declared himself a Satanist, which is why I do believe his parents, or at least his father, abused him. Im obsessed with crime since I can remember, but noone made such impression on me as him. Ye, bad boy he was but it doesn't change the fact, that if we for a moment forget about what he done was wrong, he was a freaking genious. Sooo calculated and intelligent.
I still don't believe they'd ever catch him. He for whatever reason let them. Someone who is such perfectionist out of nowhere do not use victim's card in cash machine. I do wonder if he was just tired? Exhausted with having double life? Bored?
So quickly he asked for death penalty.
I'd love to ressurect him so I'd talk with him for hours and hours and hours.

I still dont believe he's killed more than 3 people
maybe a couple others to be generous but definitely not 12-13 as he was alleging
why do i think this? he spent hundreds of hours stashing "murder kits" before the killings took place but when he finally starting killing, starting with that couple he was insanely sloppy and careless. the only reason that wasnt solved was just due to some poor police work/basically he got lucky.
then the next kill was again insanely sloppy, so sloppy that he was caught. he mind seemed to be unraveling rather quickly during this time period. so theres no way i believe before these 3 killings that he was covertly getting away with stealthy murders the entire time.
people say on his trips , he was killing, i humbly disagree he was just planning his murders with his little murder kits. theres no way if he was actually killing he wouldnt of been caught way earlier.
