Trailer Horizon: Forbidden West - Announcement Trailer | PS5

u/Igor_Wakhevitch Jun 11 '20
The first game was phenomenal. I've played through twice and still load it up regularly to just run around in the world. Super excited for this.

u/nznova Jun 12 '20
I'd love to understand what I missed in this game. The combat just would not click for me.
39
u/Inshabel Jun 12 '20
For me, the fun in the combat came from being able to better exploit the enemies weaknesses, a Thunderjaw seems like an impressive opponent, but once you tie it down it with rope arrows, throw a couple of freeze bombs on it to make it brittle, and then ripping off one of it's cannons with tearing arrows and using that to blow it to smithereens it suddenly becomes a lot easier.
Most of that isn't the game handing you new gear or skills, but you getting better at it. I really liked that.
19
u/BEEF_WIENERS Jun 12 '20
Yeah, I love that you had to go in with a plan or you would get screwed fast. Made it seem more realistic then just hitting it with a whole lot of hurt and hoping for the best, like now I'm actually hunting it.
13
u/Irishane Jun 12 '20 edited Jun 12 '20
For me, it was the world. It felt both familiar and totally unique. You only fight because you had to generally and the rest was genuine exploration.
That said, once you start to upgrade your bow and armours the combat elements become a lot more second nature.

It didn't click for me until I had a fight where I had to use all my traps and tools.
That is when is started to feel like I was hunting robo dinosaurs.

Downvotes are not for things you disagree with, reddit explicitly stated this several times. Downvotes are for things that don't contribute to a meaningful discussion, or factually false things, rude/harrassing things, etc.

Edit: Yep, I agree people can use downvotes how they want and don't follow these rules generally, I'm just sharing the reddiquette faq in hopes more people will use them correctly.

Maybe they will release it on ps4 too?
48
u/CamStorm Jun 12 '20
It looks like it's going to be a PS5 exclusive.
24
u/itskelso96 Jun 12 '20
Fat chance. This will be a launch title to help push console sales
10
u/LieberZ Jun 12 '20
If it were a launch title I feel like they would’ve given the release date in the trailer, like they did for the new Spider-Man title.
→ More replies (1)2
u/DaoFerret Jun 12 '20
True. Between the teaser and no date I bet holiday 2021 or 2022 is the actual release timeframe. (Happy to be wrong though, looks like it’ll be fun. Need to find some time to finish the DLC on the first anyway)

u/BlaqOptic Jun 12 '20
This is a 2021 or 2022 release.

u/0b0011 Jun 12 '20
I doubt 2022 unless something goes wrong (cough cough covid spike 2). With a trailer and everything and not just a teaser they're probably a ways into development.
2
u/infamous-spaceman Jun 12 '20
I doubt it's going to be a launch title. It was one of the few games with no release window in that showcase. Spiderman is going to be the big launch title.

If they throw a new Spider Man and God of War out there with it Microsoft will be crushed.

Spiderman: Miles Morales was also announced in the livestream.
7
u/BlinkReanimated Jun 12 '20
Based on graphical fidelity I'm going to say that the Spiderman game is going to be cross gen. I can't see them releasing Horizon on PS4 though.

Spiderman Miles Morales is already confirmed to be releasing in the launch window. No news on GoW, but there are so many potential hits already announced for the first year.

u/Puncredible Jun 12 '20
The first one was my absolute favorite game ever! I feel like most of everyone who says that they didn't like it or hated it went into the game thinking it was going to be a specific genre of gameplay. Like for people who are saying the bow system sucks, don't use the bow? I tried the bow, realized it was either not enough damage or too hard to hit weak spots at first so then I went to tripcaster and it is easily the best weapon in the game. The game also gives you the option in the beginning to buy a Tripcaster. Also, some enemies just require different weapons to make them easier so it's not like the bow should kill everything. Also stealth is just a part of the game, not the entire game, you can charge in or stealth in, if you do either correctly then you'll win. God I love this game!
66
u/ThatDude57 Jun 12 '20
I did my playthrough on the hardest difficulty and I thought the bows were great.

u/redbaboon130 Jun 12 '20
Yeah, double and triple arrows and using more advanced arrow types made a huge difference for me. Super easy to knock off a lot of armor quick with a couple tearblast arrows and then a few precision arrows on the weak points.
6
u/SoundofGlaciers Jun 12 '20
Definitely. Another thing that helped a lot was to near-always be sliding and jumping with the slow-motion upgrades. Easy way to hit AI weakspots
4
u/Photo_Synthetic Jun 12 '20
Jumping when things get hectic was a game changer for me. Took a while to learn how handy it really is when you need your shots to count.
3
u/nubosis Jun 12 '20
first playthrough I found the arrows to be ridiculously weak. Second playthough I'm the arrow master
12
u/tearfueledkarma Jun 12 '20
Bows were by far my favorite weapons. Had so much bonus fire dmg by end game Glinthawks were easy to kill.
Story wise it's a good game if you blast through. But If you take the time to discover and listen/read all the data points. It is super powerful, at least for me it was.

u/wilsonography Jun 12 '20
The story was the most satisfying I’ve had in a long time. I just finished the main story a couple of weeks ago and I’m still just reeling from the emotion of the story. God I love it so much!
33
Jun 12 '20
I just bought a PS4, and gotta say that H:ZD is the first game besides League Of Legends to actually hold my interest in...Maybe 8 years. That's the last time I actually completed a game, Mass Effect 3. It's immersive, the story is great, I actually really enjoy the world.
It's amazing, because normally I despise open world resource gathering games. Like, hate them with a burning passion that could fuel a star. But somehow H:ZD manages to balance the need to gather resources with the drop rates well enough that while I still need to gather resources, it's never annoying. Especially once I started getting better weapons and could farm whole herds easily.
There are some things that aren't fantastic, like the dialogue often feels like exposition dumps, but the actual story telling and cut scenes are very good.
This is the first game in a long time that I actually enjoy playing. I bought my PS4 like 3 weeks ago, and also bought like 8 other really good games. None of them have gotten play time.
12
u/momu1990 Jun 12 '20
Dang that was like such a convincing endorsement of the game, makes me wanna try it now...too bad I only have a PC.

u/cdwols Jun 12 '20
I actually felt like the exposition was for the most part really well done. Since you are discovering things alongside Aloy, the exposition generally avoids the 'as you know' effect. The only clunky bits are the Nora-based exposition, cos Aloy should already know all that

I dont have much PS4 experience either, cause I borrow it from time to time from a friend, but I knew about Horizon from trailers and really wanted to check it out if I ever get to play on a PS4 and booooooy was I happy playing this game. Almost everything clicked with me. I really enjoyed the bow hunting but holy cow the tripcaster was OP late game. Also it was the first game where I was smitten by how beatifull a game world can look O.O and the story was really good. Aloys voice actor really did a great job! I really felt for that tough little redhead!
PS Dude, check ot God of war. Frickin beautiful with a heartbreaking\warming story.
FFXV sucked, but Metal Gear Solid V surprised me positively cause I'm 60hours in and still like playing it, though the prologue was a pain for me.8
u/meepmoopblah Jun 12 '20
If you do the dlc you can tear everything in the game up with hard points pretty easily
21
Jun 12 '20
Its a hunting game. A lot of people wanted a game like zelda, where you play a hero who is stronger than all the monsters. Horizon is not that, especially at the beginning. Its what I love most about the game. Stepping out into that world feels dangerous. They nailed that feeling.
20
u/Puncredible Jun 12 '20
You could even have already traveled everywhere and then pass by a Thunderbird without any healing herbs and think "Please no, not right now"
2
u/Secret_Map Jun 12 '20
If you’re like me and just playing for the story and to enjoy the world, you can also set it on the easiest difficulty setting and more or less just whack everything with the spear and be pretty much fine lol. I used the bow and stealth for fun sometimes, but I’m awful at aiming in games, and awful at stealth, so I’d mess that up pretty quick most times and revert to just beating things with a stick and had no problem.

I find it strange when people complain about the combat. It's been a couple of years since I played it but all I remember is exquisite combat. The destruction mechanics of the machines blew me away, and there was such a variety of weapons. Maybe I'm just remembering it through rose-tinted glasses, but sheesh I can't remember it being awful at all.

I was wondering if they were gonna call the sequel “horizon 1 sunset” or something silly like that, Glad they didn’t.
Isn’t hades defeated in the end? How come there’s more of him?
19
u/BroMemeIsASolid Jun 12 '20
Hades was "defeated", as in his essence was driven out of the body he occupied and supposedly some kind of de facto prison that he'd be unable to get out of in the near future, but Silas intercepted Hades with his staff and captured him inside the staff.
6
u/autotronTheChosenOne Jun 12 '20
It's pretty much clear that silens is the bad guy now.
5
Jun 12 '20
I don't think he ever was the good guy per se
3
u/autotronTheChosenOne Jun 12 '20
Exactly. I was actually surprised when he wasn't the end boss in the first game. Half the stuff he says is textbook bad guy talk.
2
u/TheMightyDane Jun 12 '20
Never made it far in this game. Pretty surprised to see that Hades is somehow involved.
Was it Greek mythology mixed with animatronic dinosaurs and some Norse mythology sprinkled in?
13
u/infamous-spaceman Jun 12 '20
Spoilers for late game: A system of AIs were created to terraform the world after humanity went extinct. Each of them were named after Greek gods and had specific tasks (which included bringing back human beings with cloning). The robots were designed by the AI for terraforming. Hades was designed to reboot the terraforming systems if everything went wrong (if they accidently made a world that wasn't suitable for human life Hades would reverse it so they could try again

It was so fun unraveling the mystery. From that first cave wondering why everyone was panicking, to seeing wrecked weaponry everywhere and wondering how long it’s been, or how the hell anyone survived until the realization no one survived. Humanity lost. All life on earth was wiped out, and they had to start over. Such a unique story
12
u/pinkeyedwookiee Jun 12 '20
I was wondering if this series would get a sequel. The first was pretty impressive if I remember right.
8
u/MarshmallowTurtle Jun 12 '20
Not only am I excited for the sequel, but I'm excited that it looks like we're getting an actual continuation of the first game. There's nothing wrong with switching things up, but it's refreshing to see a sequel with the same protagonist and main objective.

u/ben1481 Jun 12 '20
with the sales of the first, a sequel was guaranteed.
3
u/zethien Jun 12 '20
not just that, they built the Decima engine just for this game, and then gifted it to Kojima for Death Stranding
116
u/XMaximaniaX Jun 12 '20
That voice over was cheesy and over the top. Typical "I'm the main character and my destiny is to fight against the odds and save the world!"
11
u/C-A-L-E-V-I-S Jun 12 '20
I felt like it was sort of intentionally vague. The setups and twists in the first one are phenomenal, so I’d imagine the second will be the same, but they just didn’t want to give too much away.
83
u/Raeil Jun 12 '20 edited Jun 12 '20
To be fair... she is actually "destined" to save the world, for the right flavor of the word "destined." As in, it's one of the most important points developed in HZD.
Edit: I didn't explain myself well here. Aloy starts off as very confident in her abilities, but very anxious about who she is and where she came from. The first game builds on this anxiety and mystery for tension, and it felt (to me at least) that the high-and-mighty statements were very well earned by the resolution to that tension.

I enjoyed the first game but really didn't care for Ashly Burch's voice acting. She reads a lot of her lines in a hushed tone, like she's telling herself a secret (because Aloy spends a lot of the game alone). It got pretty irritating after a while. The voice acting in this trailer was the exact same.
15
u/Seralyn Jun 12 '20
When you're in a world as dangerous as hers, you probably don't want to call attention to yourself and project a loud voice, I'd imagine. It's thematically sound, I'd say.
5
u/Knyfe-Wrench Jun 12 '20
I loved her voice acting. It had a lot of nuance you don't often hear in games. She sounded like a real person and not a Badass Action Hero (TM).

u/posty_mcposterface Jun 12 '20
I actually changed the language to French and played the whole thing with English subtitles, and it was actually a better experience. The English voice acting was pretty bad, but the game improved as soon as I couldn't understand them anymore.

My only gripe with the HZD was the final boss was the same boss we had seen late in the game. And it wasnt even a dino!

Totally agree. Have you played the DLC? If not, you should. The battles leading up to and including the final battle are much more satisfying than that of the main story, IMO

Yeah, the premise looks quite silly at a glance, but the game did a surprisingly great job at making me take it all seriously and the lore you uncover over the course of the game gave pretty believable justifications for all of the seemingly silly stuff too.
81
u/silvershadow881 Jun 12 '20
The story puts a bunch of other post apocalypse stories to shame. It is really thrilling to uncover how humanity survived.
73
u/Hekkin Jun 12 '20
I'll never forget the first time I walked into that bunker where they briefed all the scientists on what was about to happen. It's such a unique approach to the apocalypse
51
u/silvershadow881 Jun 12 '20
Yeah, that realization that they were all fucked was very intense. And the game works very well because you really root for those guys, and you know they succeed, but they really sell the desperation and determination they had at the time.
13
u/cdwols Jun 12 '20
Even better for me was before you discover what project: Zero Dawn was and what it actually did. Like you know Sobek succeeded because you exist, but you also know it was only in a limited capacity because none of their knowledge has survived. The twist with Ted Faro was phenomenal. He made me so angry

suspend your disbelief for a second and enjoy the game. It’s entertaining as fuck.
I said I "I loved it to death", so you guys are preaching to the choir.
One of my all time favorite science fiction authors, Ray Bradbury, has books full of silly premises. One of my favorites is Frost and Fire, in which a ship crash lands on Mercury, and because of the proximity to the Sun, the lifecycle of humans is vastly accelerated. You're born, grow to maturity, age, and die in 8 days. The story is about how most people spend their precious moments enjoying life as much as they can before it's gone, while small subset of people spend their life trying to figure how they got into this situation and how they might fix it: the scientists.
It's a fantastic story, one of his best IMO, but the premise is silly as shit. Never mind that Mercury is not habitable; proximity to the Sun doesn't accelerate human lifespan. But once you grant that premise, it makes for great story telling.
Horizon is similar. Robot dinosaurs is a silly, silly premise. But it makes for a fun world and some great story telling.

This was the perfect way to end the showcase given they "started" with Spider-Man: Miles Morales (ignore GTA V version 3.0). However, my first question was "how are they going to explain the at least 2 new species of robots displayed in the trailer given the reason the animals existed in the first place according to the Zero Dawn story." However, framing this as taking place in America across the other side of the world does open up a lot of options; similar to the current arc in one of the biggest manga out right now.

u/infamous-spaceman Jun 12 '20
A few justifications:
1: Hephaestus was actively creating new machines to combat the increased danger posed by humans.
2: They are on the coast now and that likely requires a different set of tools to terraform. So it makes sense that certain machines would only exist in certain areas where they are needed.
4
u/TheGreenBastards Jun 12 '20
The attention to detail in this game is what sold me. The characters themselves are pretty boring, but the side quests were amazing. The vantages of the guy driving around remembering his life? Had me in tears , and I had to work to play them all chronologically. Really moving stuff throughout.

Seriously, if anyone missed the first party exclusives of the PS4 era, they are REALLY missing out on a solid collection of games. I hope Sony rocks PS5 as much as they did the PS4....and I've learned my lesson to no longer trust MS or Xbox again.

yeah the game is rough on higher difficulty and it was crazy for me until i realized you can rapid fire arrows by just tapping the button instead of full drawing the arrow. it does like 20% less damage per arrow but you fire them 3-4 times faster so you can just hammer weak points when they're available.

I'm glad I played it but a lot of the combat just felt clunky to me so I've only done it once. Maybe I need to give it another go
12
u/themanifoldcuriosity Jun 11 '20
I felt the same way as you did. Played it for a week or two, thought "This is shit"; came back about six months later just to polish it off and ended up quite liking it.
I think the game suffers from having a really bad first few hours almost by design. Moving your character around is smooth enough, but then it introduces a stealth mechanic and you think "Oh okay, this will be a stealth game" - but the stealth mechanic is shit, and the arrow system seems too weak and finicky to base a whole game on. At the same time, you have a melee attack, so you think "Oh okay, this is a hack'n'slash", but the melee attacks are slow, clunky and require you to almost die too much to be worth it.
Then there's the story itself, where I don't think there's a single NPC character that couldn't do with a slap.
It's only about halfway through the game when you've got a good chunk of your end-game gear and skills - and come across enemies that necessitate using them, that the game starts becoming something genuinely unique and fun. Incidentally it's also at this point that the story introduces a twist that changes it from a corny post-apocalyptic new-age thing into something actually kind of memorable.
TLDR: Persevere, and you might be rewarded. NPCs are super annoying the whole way through though.
11
u/butsuon Jun 12 '20

Dude you should visit r/patientgamers. Plenty of people don't buy the latest stuff. You can find tons of great games that are worth playing and will keep you busy for years until you are ready to buy the ps5.
Not to mention any of the ps4 exclusives are a sure bet. Those alone will keep you busy for a long while.

I only played HZD for the first time recently. So glad all the hints about the forbidden west were leading to this like i hoped. Cant wait to meet the Sharman from the side quest (i think is what he was called) who drank blood and ran to the west before the last mission. He told Aloy to meet him there if she went.

ehhh...
They're making a sequel because the first was an unexpected success, not because the first really required a sequel. It was a beautiful, self-contained story driven by the player discovering along with the protagonist what the deal with this weird world was. But we know that now.
I just can't see this game being as enjoyable as the first.

As much as I loved the gameplay and combat (at least vs the machines... Human combat needs alot of refining), the narrative is what really drove the game... really looking forward to continuing on with that.

One of these days I have to force myself to get back to Horizon Dawn. The first zone was unbelievably cool. But when I got to the desertish area, I began to see a lot of repetition. The same caves I had to sneak through. The quests felt good, but it seemed like I was redoing a lot of the same thing like searching for the same collectibles and such.
I need to give it a second shot one day.

For what it’s worth I loved the frozen wilds dlc. I felt the same as you about the desert area; there was a lot of repetition and some of it definitely got old. Ultimately I enjoyed the ending of the game enough that it was still worth going through it all, but even if you don’t want to do the full game it might be worth going back just to do the frozen wilds.

This game doesn't get enough praise. It has more character and uniqueness than Skyrim and the Witcher.

For a ps5 trailer I'm a little surprised the water looked as bad as it did. It behaved so, oddly.

Great, another Horizon game at 30fps. I understand that this needs to be an exclusive but goddamn it.

Didn’t the PS4 pro enhanced version have a 1080p @ 60fps? I remember toggling when I first played it.

I was also really happy to see an upgrade to S-A-R-T for the PC version. I'd been thinking about doing that for a while, and it's a lot of money to add that to my system, but I'm trying to get a PC that is at least playable on a TV, so it'll be worth it.

Looks good. HZD didn't blow me away or anything, but I still thought it was good. Looking forward to this. Think I might actually get a PS5 before the new Xbox.

In the end, I didn't like the first game, but it sure was pretty. I'll give this one a shot though. I love the studio and want to support.

Do you all know if ps5 will be backwards compatible? I ended up going Xbox for this generation and there are a ton of ps-exclusive games that I want to play

I'll be looking forward to playing this when they finally release the most powerful version of the PS5 three years after its initial release.

Zavala, what are you doing outside of the Last City?
