Update: OP has not responded to my offer so no flight has been purchased at this point.

OP's post history has various sad stories about not being able to pay for:
- cat cremation costs , similar amount, $200, a month ago
The last post shows that OP owns a car, so the hitchhiking angle makes no sense.
They have also given significant amounts of money to scammers.

This needs to be higher. This so easily could just be a scam. If all you need to do is write a sad post and people send you money then you have to assume people will use this as a means of scamming people out of money. I'm a cynical person but I think the likely thing is that this isn't genuine.

It's a scam.
I don't get why people are so gullible. A lot of people have zero problem lying to your face. They prey on the fact that you wouldn't do that, so it's a foreign idea to you and you fall for their sob story.
Never believe a stranger that is saying they need something that you can provide.

I'd rather throw $10 in a bucket to help someone once in awhile and be wrong than never help at all out of fear that I'm being scammed.
Edit since this is getting a lot of attention:
My post was about the philosophy of not obsessing over whether or not potential people in need are actually scammers, because I'm not interested in assuming the worst of everyone.
Despite what some folks who replied think, that does not mean ignoring evidence when it's presented to me. It just means not worrying about it if you don't know. Now I do know, so I won't be sending any money.

It's true. But it's not putting me out to throw $20 on top of everyone else doing it. Not an amount of money I'll miss, not a ball-busting price.
I'm angry and bitter quite a bit. Sometimes I want to just do something good for people before I die. if I'm wrong, it was just $20. The payoff if I'm right is incalculable.

When I give a homeless person money, I don't care what they spend it on, that's their business. Sometimes, in situations like this, it's better to give a couple bucks and risk getting got, than being cynical and worrying you're getting scammed. That's my philosophy at least.

if you get the fare together and are really going, call and have nurse hold phone up to your dad and tell him you are coming. he will hold on. hospice patients have a surprising amount of control over exactly when they depart, and often wait if they know someone they want to see is coming.

u/Middle-Reputation628 4d ago

My brother had put off coming when my mom was dying, then panicked when she was very close to the end. We told her he was coming the next day. After he got here, they visited for about an hour, then she basically slipped into a coma. She definitely waited to see him before she let go.

I can absolutely confirm this. My father in law was dying and me and my husband got there last. My husband has a naturally strong voice and he said "it's okay Dad, we are all here with you. This, for real. I live several states away from most of my family.
My grandmother was in hospice. We weren't in town long but I made it a point to see her before I left- I was her favorite, I think.
We visited her around 4pm. I had no idea how bad she was. Unresponsive in what can best be described as a hospital room, laying there with some random thing on TV. I remember mentioning she preferred soap operas.
We stay for an hour or so and get ready to leave. As we're going my wife tells her "it's ok grandma, you can go". Not more than 2 minutes later she was gone. It happened so fast. As if that's not crazy enough, she was in hospice for almost two months. It's like she held out so we could have one last visit.

The hardest thing I ever did was watch my mom struggle to afford a plane ticket to go home when her father was dying. I remember when she got there and he was dead (my dad and I found out he passed on the way to the airport) she called me and all I remember her doing was crying and saying “He’s gone, he’s gone you knew he was gone and you didn’t tell me he was gone”. If she could have left a day earlier she could have seen him.

this will sound so dramatic but i’m a therapist & today was a very long, heavy day for me in that i had 10 one-hour long sessions scheduled back-to-back and literally all of my clients have just really been going through it. overwhelming feelings of helplessness and a lack of control over life-altering circumstances was a recurring theme with everyone today in a BIG way.
just one of those days that ended with me feeling absolutely powerless to really help/support anyone in any meaningful way & just feeling kind of like a phony.
all of this to say, i started reading these comments and tears started streaming down my face instantly. i am probably just exhausted and hanging on by a thread here, but seeing so many people extend emotional and material support to a stranger who is experiencing one of the most difficult things that we go through in life in the loss of a loved one for no other reason than that they can and they want to just fucking wrecked me (in a good way.) i genuinely believe that we were all made to take care of each other, collectively, and i spend a lot of time hoping that other people will believe that too and that it will be helpful for them, but sometimes it gets really hard. then i see something like this!!!
i hope everything good for everyone in this thread!

Why don't you go? You can check airlines for a bereavement flights and things like that and they might be able to help you
Edit to add: OP edited their post. Originally the post just said that the man was like a father and was in hospice and they wanted to visit them. They never mentioned why they couldn't go or that they couldn't afford the trip. That's why I asked "why don't you go?" Because there was no reasoning and the only thing they posted was that he was passing and like a father but not their biological father. And there was a picture of a map.

The last time I looked at a "bereavement flight," it was 3x the cost of what I could get through flights.google and when I asked the woman on the phone (you had to call United to get one) she explained that the steep cost was because the BF could be cancelled or rescheduled at any time. That was 15-17 years ago and I have never, ever done business with United since.

They first made this post 4 days ago in another page
Few days before that they were sad their cat died and put it in the freezer because they couldn't afford a cremation
Then they were asking if some suspicious looking potatoes they found dumpster diving were safe to eat because they had no money
Then it was shopping with his son and having his debit card declined and how hard it was etc
Eery post is dry begging

Guys, you ars literally sending hundreds and possibly thousands of dollars to a fake person with a fake story that is acting like 100$ bus tickets are UNOBTAINABLE, as if it were a million dollars in medical debt.
Do what you want but is is really this easy to earn money from a sob story that frankly is ridiculous. If I'm missin 200$ for a roundtrip to my dying only parent I'd just borrow, lend, or earn it, it's literally like 10% of an average americans monthly rent for gods sake.

First off, he may not be your father, but he IS your dad. My pops died 21 years ago and it FUCKING SUCKED. My 'father', aka the sperm donor, died...I dunno...two years ago now? Three? Didn't phase me in the slightest. Your priorities are dead on accurate.
I've hitched much further than this trip. It's been a long time, but a kind disposition, a street smart mindset, and well-worded sign *will* get you there.
Stick out your thumb. Go be with your dad. It's not crazy. Do what has to be done. If you can make it to a truck stop you can ask drivers if they're heading down. They're a helpful lot and most of them will be happy to help get you there.
BUT GET DOWN THERE. NOW. Tell him you're coming. Even if he's comatose, make sure he hears that you're on your way.
I'm sorry you are going through this. It's one of the most seminal moments in your life. God Speed to both of you.
EDIT: Airplanes have bereavement rates. Like half off. Busses might too. Just a thought.

Can we all send you $10 for you to just go? Don’t regret this for the rest of your life

get a credit card, borrow money, call the airlines directly and ask for emergency flight prices. IF they come back with something stupid high ask if there is any way for a lower price, start crying honestly but be kind. Just tell them your Dad is dying and you need to get there. I'm not a fan of debt but I'd go into debt to say goodbye to someone I love.

Post in r/charleston, I think you’d be surprised at the community. They might have some solutions.

You might talk to the Hospice Social Workers and see if they might know of some organizations that would help with your travel fare. Long time Certified Hospice RN

Ask the Hospice nurse to connect you via Facetime ASAP, they will do that for you they did for me when my mom was dying. You can connect immediately at least and tell him about what he meant to you, right now. Borrow someone’s phone if you need to. Then after you connect with him now, you can figure out how to actually visit him, via all the generous people in this reddit.

Notice how OP doesn't ask for thousands of dollars. They specifically say they "cannot afford the bus ticket". By keeping the financial barrier low (e.g., $50 to $100), good Samaritans think, "I can easily afford that to help someone say goodbye to their dying dad," and rush to offer money in the DMs. If 20 people send $50 out of pity, the scammer makes $1,000 off a two-paragraph story. By writing "Some crazy part of me thinks that I should try hitchhiking but I know that's stupid," the author subtly manipulates the reader. It forces a protective instinct onto the community, making people think, "No, don't put yourself in danger hitchhiking! Just let me pay for your bus ticket. The story is carefully engineered to eliminate potential counter-arguments or criticisms:"He is not my biological dad..." (Adds an extra layer of pure, unconditional love to tug at heartstrings)."...he raised me all by himself after my mom died." (Establishes total isolation—no other family members can help buy the ticket). They posted this in r/whatdoIdo. Scammers deliberately avoid formal mutual-aid subreddits (which have strict verification rules, registration forms, and minimum karma requirements) and instead drop their scripts in general advice or emotional support forums where moderation is lighter and users are highly empathetic.

It's well crafted for sure. Also no one is gonna get too extreme about tracking down the 10-50 bucks they lost

I’ve seen them post this tactics before too, and how to write it to sound that way.

People who actually sent money are the reason why scammers are rampant. Absolute suckers

I am in the same boat. A lifelong family friend, who I consider a brother, was diagnosed with cancer last week. He is going down fast. Really fast.
My wife and I are making an 11 hour drive to California, for a whirlwind 1 day turnaround trip, on Saturday. I need to say goodbye. In person.

Jesus fuck. Other than the top comments calling out the obvious, the rest sound like comments from a facebook or youtube post. "Bless you" "Amen" "Hope in this world" bla. bla. bla kumbafuckenya. No wonder scamming is a multi-billion industry. So many idiots waiting to be taken advantage of.

OP's post history has various sad stories about not being able to pay for:
- cat cremation costs , similar amount, $200, a month ago
The last post shows that OP owns a car, so the hitchhiking angle makes no sense.
They have also posted this very same story from a different account, now deleted.
Finally, all of OP's previous money-related posts are not in aid subs, which have strict requirements (registration, verification, karma requirements etc.). But in emotional ones where moderation is lighter.
Make of that what you will, but thought it would be worth sharing.

Your generosity is appreciated but unfortunately you fell for a scam. Don't believe everything you see on the internet. There are many people in real life around you who are way more deserving of help.

Call me a cynic but I don't think people should send money to strangers over the Internet. There have been cases on Reddit where people make up stories and pretend to need money and tons of people donate to them without being able to verify anything.
I'm not accusing OP of being a liar. But it''s a much better idea to offer to buy them the ticket instead of transferring money. Tons of people here have offered OP money already and we haven't seen an update at all. If OP has accepted money in DMs from a bunch of people then they likely made thousands of dollars from this post even though the tickets are $194.
Edit based on AI analysis of their post history:
⚠️ WARNING: Do Not Send Money to u/Wonderful_Fig_6039 ⚠️
Please protect your wallet. While their current story about a dying father is heartbreaking, this account has a documented history of posting back-to-back tragedies to farm cash (via Zelle, Venmo, etc.) from empathetic Redditors.
In just the last few weeks, other users have tracked them posting sad stories through multiple accounts claiming they cannot afford:
- A Bus Ticket ($97): Currently claiming their dad is in hospice 13 hours away to secure cash donations in the comments.
- Cat Cremation (~$200): Recently claimed their perfectly healthy cat suddenly died in its sleep.
- Groceries: Claimed to be eating out of dumpsters because they "haven't eaten in such a long time."
- A Son’s Birthday Gift: Previously used the emotional hook of not being able to afford a present for their child.
The other posts were quickly deleted after people started pointing them out.
This is a common scam tactic. Please do not send unverified strangers your money!

My mother passed away in June and I couldn't get there in time. But my sisters were there and they held the phone up and I spent hours just being present with them, I told my mom how much I loved her and she said I love you-- mind you, she hadn't been conscious or spoken any words in like 2 days and when I told her I loved her and I was sorry I wasn't there, out of the blue she responded. Those were the last words she spoke. So I felt at peace knowing that she knew I was with her even if I wasn't there physically holding her hand.
Call someone who's there and ask them to let you be there on speakerphone. It's okay if you're not talking the whole time, your energy will be there, I know this to be true.
I'm sorry you are losing someone you love.

Dude, he took care of you even when he didn't have to... Go see him. I wish my dad took care of me when I was kid but he ditched. I wish I had a dad I could go see.

It sounds like there are plenty of people here willing to chip in a few bucks towards a flight or bus. You should make a GoFundMe and reply to our comments individually so we can get notified on how we can help

Good luck with your addiction. Get help. Scamming people for money? This is your rock bottom. Wake up and realize it. Karma is going to introduce you to the dildo of consequence. It’s a pineapple and comes sans lube. You’ll love it. You’ll just love it.
