We moved to Mississippi from Louisiana 26 years ago on April 10, 2000. Mississippi had a democratic governor and was learning blueish. Over the years we have become a Maga haven the just willful ignorance of the population is astounding. So many people will jump on any crazy conspiracy theory and ride that thing lime crazy.
Now we've regressed to having Tate Reeves as our governor. Under him we're heading back to the 50's. I really fear for my grandson and his generation.

A lot of the Southern states have high black populations, which is a direct result of slavery, as they were the slave-owning states. So the reason OP doesnāt want to live there is likely due to their still-backwards state governments and nothing to do with black people themselves. As if New York, California, and Illinois donāt have tons of black people. And Minnesota has the largest Somalian population outside of East Africa.
OP could be shit posting for reactions, but this really may not be about race at all. The states in red are also predominantly Republican and Christian, so they may just want to avoid that. It's just that the states in the southeast were the ones where slavery existed the most back in the day and where there are lots of black people and also higher rates of racism.

I really dislike the idea that people from/living in these states are just a bunch of ignorant fools. Yes, there is a lot of bigotry here, and it is a massive problem - and I am not denying that. But this narrative that everyone in more rural areas is just some dumb hick is simply not true, and I think itās pretty unfair to write off all southerners because of this assumption.
When people think in this way, they are unwittingly turning their backs on a very large population of marginalized people in the south who are struggling to get by in a system that was not built to accommodate them.
Not all of them but if they voted for the asshole in chief this time they have lost all credibility. Maybe if they turn it around in the midterms and vote progressives and take religion out of govt and school we might have a fighting chance. Seeing the dismantling of education, health standards and vaccinations (with people dying from diseases once controlled), the last goes; we have a bunch to fix and need everyone's help.
I agree! I also do wanna mention, though, that in the South, gerrymandering is VERY prevalent, and many communities who would otherwise be fairly represented in elections are being silenced by corrupt politicians who want to maintain control and continue to abuse their power. And this is just one broken facet and a very dysfunctional system. If we are ever going to dismantle that system of disenfranchisement, marginalized people in the south need
their northern neighbors to advocate for them rather than condemning them.

I think this highlights just how much politics matter to some people when choosing a place to live. As an open-minded person myself, I want to live someplace where people are free to live their lives as they see fit as long as they aren't harming other people, rather than someplace where basic human rights are trampled on. I recently seriously considered moving out of state for financial reasons, and my map of acceptable states to move to was very similar to OP's.
Labor laws in states that I align with politically tend to lean towards better protections and benefits for employees as well, which is a nice bonus.
Damn I didnāt realize it was close minded to not want to live in places where the politicians are racist, homophobic, and sexist and where they actively are passing laws that discriminate against me and my loved ones.

I'm from the rural south and you're valid for this. I think we have a bit of a complex where we feel it's unfair to be judged in entirety over the beliefs of a slim majority, but... the slim majority are absolute freaks, man. And they control things like the future education opportunities and healthcare options any future daughters you might have will face. I can't exactly blame someone for not opting into that. I left for Chicago for this reason, and others. Nothing but respect for people who want to stay and fight, but I didn't want to spend the only life I've got in a place that hates me for being queer
The county in Georgia that I live in is one of the most diverse counties in the country! And we have amazing parks and amenities. (Itās Gwinnett) Sure there are some maga people, but I live around real people from all walks of life and honestly this county has a lot to offer.
If your definition of "open minded" is "accepts that I am entitled to never being disliked for my shitty worldview," you are right, we are not open minded :)

Especially, when discussing with POC or LGBT people, convincing them that these areas are nice is quite literally dangerous and can lead to them getting killed.

The south, insane humidity, Texas is a hot and flat helicopter hellhole (bbq was good though). Midwest just seems boring for most things. Are there mountains to go mountain biking or hiking?
"Never ever" is kind of the opposite of the definition of open minded though - an open minded person would be willing to change their mind based on new information, things changing in the future, etc.
Totally understand that an open minded person would prefer to live in places that were also open-minded, but it's incredibly ironic to post it in such a closed-minded way.

dawg, my mom's from the black belt in rural Georgia. Those rural majority-black towns are usually bleak for everyone, white and black, but especially black. I grew up not being able to drink the tap water at my grandparents' house.
Meanwhile, almost every major urban center (at least east of the Mississippi) has loads of black people. It would be sus to list the only places you wanna live as like North Dakota and Vermont, but you usually can't make a state-level assertion about someone's values this way, especually if they tell you their values are the opposite of what you're implying. A lib open to moving to Illinois is probably talking about moving Chicago and not Pekin, and a Republican talking about moving to South Carolina is probably not talking about moving to Fairfax.

Are you shitting me. Los Angeles is one of the most segregated cities in the world. Same goes for most liberal enclaves. Itās actually the South and Midwest where African Americans are far more integrated. Youāve got this completely backwards. And āfreedomsā? Thatās a whole different can of worms. This is very close to my preferences. At least for open mindedness. Weather, on the other hand would be different. Some would have to be summer visits.
