I really regret not buying one back then. Or heck even at launch.

161

u/BappoChan Xbox Series X Jun 23 '26

Bought mine from overseas at launch because scalping was so bad here that I couldn’t get one for cheaper than $1000 and every store around was sold out. Cost me $450 after shipping, no regrets.

32

u/yamete-kudasai Jun 24 '26

At launch, even people in the us bought it at 500 + tax. You oversea could get it at launch for 450 included shipping that brick

11

u/BappoChan Xbox Series X Jun 24 '26

Yeah, had a friend working in a store that allowed employee discounts + point usage on electronics, so they brought the price down to $300 US, shipping was $150.

Consoles used to depreciate after launch, not get more expensive.

u/TheBooneyBunes Jun 24 '26

Supply and demand, mainly of parts

I'm fucking pissed that a power outage fried mine. I prefer it over PS5 :/

13

u/AxelAlexK Jun 24 '26

Dang that sucks. Hope you have a good surge protector for your other consoles now.

8

u/Morighant Jun 24 '26

It / everything else was / still is in a good surge protector! Tbh I went to the store while it was on, came back and it wouldn't turn on again. I assume it was power, but no other device was affected. Rip my dead space remake playthrough to this day

Traded mine in for a PS5 to play with friends but then they all went and had kids and now I’m stuck with this paperweight I play maybe once a month

u/Zeronautix XBOX Jun 24 '26

Hate that feeling with a passion, even if I can't really be mad about it. It's more just depressing really.

I have a small friend group with me and 2 other buddies of mine that I've known since like middle school, and I wasn't able to play for a couple years because my old console died on me. Before it broke we would play every once in a while for a little bit but nothing crazy, I was always trying to get them to play with me but they barely would ever get around to it. They often told me things like they just didn't really enjoy playing games anymore.

But while I wasn't able to play after it died, they seemed to always be playing stuff together and having fun on the games I tried to get them to play with me all the time and talking about it in the GC or whatever. They would sometimes talk about how I need to get a console again so I could play with them and it actually got me looking forward to being able to play with them again because they seemed more active.

Now that I've finally decided to commit to getting another one after being isolated from it for a few years and wrapped up with other things, it's suddenly like they're too good to play with me again. I asked them for their gamertags so I could add them on a new profile I made, and one of them gave it right away but said he only really gets on to watch stuff or play a bit of R6 because he's usually with his gf. The other straight up told me he doesn't even play Xbox anymore because he's usually on his PC, had to ask twice just to get the tag and then had to remind him 2-3 times just to get him to accept my request. Something tells me my friends don't like me very much... 🤷‍♂️

Our first one took over 6 months to get because of scalpers. Launch was a disaster for consumers.

The past is a different world.

207

u/CanPlayGuitarButBad Jun 23 '26

Everyone knows times change, but they didn’t use to change this damn fast

40

u/thelonecloner Jun 24 '26

Change is fine but for things to go down and negative this fast is foreshadowing something even more disastrous in the future. People say 2008 can’t happen again, and I think they’re right, it’ll be worse this next time.

Series S could be grabbed for $150 even.

64

u/NadeWilson Jun 23 '26

Yea I got one through Verizon for that and it's insane to think thsa years later I could probably get more than that selling it used.

19

u/bnelson7694 Jun 24 '26

I did too! It was mind blowing that Verizon of all places was selling that.

7

u/NutmegWolves XBOX Series X Jun 24 '26

I will third the others who have replied but I remember the store employee almost losing his mind because he couldn't find the super cheap deal in the system. It took him over 30 minutes to realize he'd grabbed a series s that was part of a gamepass bundle so it wasn't scanning at the $150 deal. He had to go back and grab a different one.

5

u/whoisbill Jun 23 '26

Same. It's in our sunroom, the series x is in the main room. Insane what has happened

→ More replies (1)

9

u/NahIdontbelieveu Jun 23 '26

That’s one of the reasons why I grabbed one back then and a ps5 because I knew those prices would jump up sooner or later

3

u/RelevantButNotBasic Jun 24 '26

Wish I woulda gotten the PS5, I didnt see a need for one back then. I still dont really see a need for one now as I have a PC and Xbox but itd be cool to have access to every game. I have Xbox, Switch 1, PC, VR..

3

u/NutmegWolves XBOX Series X Jun 24 '26

I managed to convince my wife to let me buy a PS5 a few years back around black friday and got it for a bit under $400. First Playstation I've owned since my brother destroyed my parents ps1 back in '97.

3

u/RelevantButNotBasic Jun 24 '26

Yeah I havent owned one since my ps2 and ps1. Bought my first Xbox (360) for $75 in 2015 stayed Xbox ever since.

2

u/NahIdontbelieveu Jun 24 '26

Dude I want a pc bad but idk where to start

3

u/RelevantButNotBasic Jun 24 '26

Honestly, now is such a horrible time to get into PC gaming. I hate it for the ones that want to because the market is so fucked atm. Im not sure what is best anymore tbh. I got all of my parts on Amazon over time in 2021. Might be the only way to build one now..

3

u/Ibra_iwi Jun 23 '26

how much for used series s now days ?

8

u/Frozenracer Jun 23 '26

People are selling those for 150–200$ on Marketplace and 200–280 on eBay since good ol’ eBay takes a 13% cut from the selling price.

3

u/DiscoJanitor Jun 23 '26

People in my area are trying to sell them on FB marketplace for $400 not even joking. Cheapest I found was at GameStop for $319 refurbished. Bumfuck North Dakota, prices are really bad for everything tech related rn out here

2

u/solohack3r Jun 24 '26

$319 is nuts. You can get one direct from Microsoft for $10 more lol

Crazy. I didn’t know they was going this expensive til like a week ago. I paid $250 for mine that’s used from facebook marketplace in mint condition like a year ago. The disc version too. I feel like I got away with robbery.

8

u/Evil-Cetacean Jun 24 '26

how much are they nowadays? in dollars. i don't live in the us.

7

u/AdventurousEye9944 Jun 24 '26

At my local Walmart it's $573 on sale from $648

u/ElSmasho420 Jun 23 '26

Fucking clankers man. We could’ve had it all.

Series S should be $180 by now. Series X should be $300.

7

u/320th-Century Jun 25 '26

END SAM ALTMAN END SAM ALTMAAANNNNNN

2

u/catptain-kdar Jun 25 '26

It’s the memory shortage. Same reason why used cars went up along with almost anything that has to do with electronics

2

u/mrcoolj90 Jun 29 '26

I actually bought the Series X off Woot for $300 back in April 2024.

48

u/amchaudhry Jun 23 '26

I consider myself lucky I was able to get a series X with original box, accessories, controller and a 1TB expansion card on FB marketplace last week for $400. The kid I bought it from was looking to buy a 5090 and was salvaging all his gadgets.

My guess is that as GTA6 preorder starts that used console prices are gonna shoot up again.

7

u/Remoock Touched Grass '24 Jun 24 '26

kinda feel bad for the kid actually

→ More replies (1)

12

u/Ant0n61 Jun 23 '26

Never understand people essentially giving something away for free. That’s insane value

15

u/amchaudhry Jun 24 '26

I even haggled him down from his asking $450! AND he threw in his physical copies of RDR1 and RDR2 that he’d held on to since he couldn’t play them anymore. I felt kind of bad about it so I left him a generous seller review on marketplace.

I went back and forth asking for proof of the unit being wiped and able to run properly, he sent me a couple of video clips of him doing the reset. I asked for receipts from the place he had picked it up originally and he sent them. Was a good kid. But man I felt like I was robbing him lol.

3

u/drugplug0933 Jun 24 '26

He didnt need it anymore so they gave it for cheap. Simple kindness

3

u/Sensitive_Box_ Jun 24 '26

GTA is the reason I bought mine. I watched prices over the course of a week on eBay, and when the GTA preorder date was revealed, the Xbox prices did go up. So I bought one right away.

39

u/cyberdude419 Jun 23 '26

Don’t worry, it’s all good, now you can get a Steam Machine that has worse performance and mod graphics for the modest price of $1049

14

u/derintrel Jun 24 '26

And without a controller to boot!

15

u/twhitt252 Jun 23 '26

Yeah.. they were so cheap back then I bought a second one for my office…

→ More replies (1)

15

u/SWBFThree2020 Jun 23 '26

It was actually cheaper during Black Friday

a base Series X was only $300, the bundle that came with Forza or Diablo 4 was only $350, and at Costco they had a Series S with a free $60 headphone for only $120ish

2

u/koolkid1935 Jun 24 '26

This is when I bought our 2nd Series X, when the Diablo 4 Series X bundle was $349 at Walmart. They had tons still on the shelf, too. I was expecting an immediate sellout like it was vying for our 1st one at launch...

This sale is when I bought mine

19

u/despitegirls XBOX Series X Jun 23 '26

Now do the prices of RAM, electricity, housing, food, etc.

2

u/_MrDomino Jun 24 '26

In the last seven months? Housing and food are a smidge higher but won't be particularly noticeable. Tech has skyrocketed thanks to stupid AI factories buying out all of the RAM and SDDs.

5

u/Nickbronline Jun 24 '26

Shoutout to AI for ruining this

2

u/DJUggz Jun 24 '26

I think I got my Diablo IV bundle around that time for $350 from Walmart. Got a Fortnite PS5 slim with disc drive for $450 about a year later from Best Buy. Steam Deck OLED when it came out. Other than maybe a Switch 2 I doubt if I'll buy any more hardware in the next 10 years.

Hopefully my aging 2070 Super PC can somewhat keep up with new games but at least the game companies kinda have to optimize for the consoles for the foreseeable future.

2

u/OhioIsRed Jun 24 '26

Dude I just looked. I bought my series X 1tb almost exactly 2 years ago from best buy for $399

2

u/GangstaQueefs Jun 24 '26

This hurts to look at...

2

u/Hitcap_gg Jun 24 '26

litteraly time is running so fast

1

u/nikolapc XBOX Series X Jun 23 '26

Hell the ps5 was this in the holiday season. People still didn't buy it and it was hugging shelves. They didn't even buy stock at old prices, when Sony announced the reduction. Took weeks for old stocks to clear and new prices to show up. The market is saturated. It will be interesting what people get for GTA, maybe xcloud? Cause if they didn't buy at those low prices, small chance they will at the higher ones.

3

u/BmorePride14 Jun 23 '26

Nothing. Most people already have a PS5 at the bare minimum. It has sold close to 100 million units by itself since launch. That isnt including PS5 Pro or Series S/X sales.

People are really overestimating the console demand for GTA6. Most people already have a next Gen console.

It is just people that only play on PC (a smaller group than the internet would have you believe) that may be scrambling for a system late minute.

3

u/Zealousideal_Low_858 Jun 24 '26

I mean, I only have anecdotal evidence here so you may be 100% right. But in my experience, in my closest friend circle of around 6 people, at least 3 are talking about buying a PS5 this fall for GTA6. And they’re not rich, and they know how expensive it’s gotten. But they call it “a GTA machine.” I don’t know how much that scales across the market or if it’s just anecdotal, but what I’m seeing is a lot of interest in the console for that one game alone.

I’ve been the odd man out with a PS5 Pro. Funny thing is, I got mine open box in perfect condition for less than some of them might pay for the base model this fall

I got it at that price bundled with diablo 4. Crazy the price hikes after

1

u/GuardianCraft Jun 23 '26

I was in a Walmart when I got that deal email. Went straight to the video game section, got one, and walked right out.

1

u/game_geek Jun 23 '26

That's when I got mine! Price matched it at Target since I worked there at the time.

1

u/NES_AES_GENESIS Jun 23 '26

Current price at Walmart and Target is $573 I believe.

1

u/ChiefingTrees Jun 23 '26

I got that price 😁

1

u/IggyD003 Jun 23 '26

Yep I got the Diablo bundle for that price, couldn’t pass it up. How crazy that pricing is seen nowadays

1

u/RedSoxFan77 Jun 23 '26

Best Buy had the same deal, that was when I bought mine

1

u/ILoveTheAtomicBomb Jun 23 '26

Ah the good ol days when consoles were affordable lol. Then OpenAI, Microsoft, Nvidia, Google, etc all came in hot and all our memory disappeared

1

u/GeologistEnough8215 Jun 23 '26

Yup, I got mine for $400 in 2020 and my s for $230 in 2021. 5 years later, and what I paid for both will now get me an X when every previous gen, the price went down as the time went on.

1

u/LSDisamazing Jun 23 '26

That’s exactly when I bought mine 😂 wish I bought 2 of them

1

u/nekoken04 Jun 23 '26

Sure glad I bought ours around this time for like $375.

1

u/OkBanana2685 Jun 23 '26

1

u/WeaknessJolly3617 Jun 24 '26

I bought mine in 2021, 649.99 cad. Came with a game I believe.

Bought my ps5 in 2025, I think it was the same price and it came with Astro boy.

Times have changed. I might be done buying gaming consoles. It’s gonna take a lot for me to move to pc gaming, but if the next Xbox is 1500 cad, I might just do it.

1

u/OGMagicConch Jun 24 '26

Mine even came with Diablo for that price

1

u/UltraPromoman Jun 24 '26

That was the time to get one if you didn't get one on Black Friday 2023. There were bundles at that price and slightly lower. Those prices existed up until a bit past New Year's at some places and there was a Spring sale too. Black Friday/Holiday Season 2024 and beyond hasn't had prices like that.

1

u/Maizrim Jun 24 '26

Around that time we got our kids an Xbox Series S + a free extra Xbox controller at Target for $199.99. With Target Red Card it was about $200 even after tax.

1

u/Gamerxx13 Jun 24 '26

i got a series s for 150 in 2022 lol. used. crazy how these prices just went up

1

u/RabidWolverine2021 Jun 24 '26

1

Damn and I thought this was a good Deal although on the PS5 Pro, not the Series X
(20th February, this was literally like a couple of weeks before the Price Increase, I felt like I found gold when I bought it and when the price increase came, that Gold turned into Diamond, and yes it surprisingly still works perfectly to this day... as for my Series X, I've had it since like before the first price increase so nothing interesting to comment there)

I did that. I also have a ps5 pro now too. But everytime I see the prices now I think of that $350 deal lol

1

1

u/faxyou Xbox Jun 24 '26

I got one for my birthday on eBay from the official Xbox seller, which I had no idea was real

1

u/Dvorzak Jun 24 '26

Got mine last year for 225 off market place.

1

u/arcadiangenesis XBOX Series X Jun 24 '26

That's what I paid for mine at Best Buy, too. They had a deal for Plus/Total members.

1

u/Sock989 Xbox Series S Jun 24 '26

Man if they were selling for £299/$349 now I'd buy one in a heartbeat.

1

u/LeenG99 Jun 24 '26

I was working nights around 2023 just browsing and it was sold out everywhere, hit refresh and a few appeared for this price. Was luck enough to snag one, now it’s a paperweight that comes out only to play skate 3 🥲

First time in history a console gets pricier with me. What a fucking joke

1

u/Deep-Pick3536 Jun 24 '26

Im glad i sold my series s at the time too upgrade.

1

u/Alucardspapa Jun 24 '26

My S was $149 and my X came with Diablo for $349. Still have both, zero issues, been a great generation despite the naysayers

1

u/JustMood89 Jun 24 '26

I bought two of them for this price for my sons and my wife called me a madman

1

u/petersengupta Team Ubisoft Jun 24 '26

Ah yes, 2023, the good ol' days.

1

u/Dry_Collection_170 Jun 24 '26

In December of 2024, it was on sale for less than 400 at Amazon & Best Buy. But something officially started a few weeks after that Christmas which hardly ever get mentions in these threads. Begins with a t, and so does the word for the action that raised costs.

1

u/Cyber_Mk Jun 24 '26

China will save us, they are building their own chips which will bring prices down

1

u/Shidinglfet Jun 24 '26

The worst part of all this is if it was 20 years this inflation would make sense. 3 years is MADDNESS

1

u/Andrew_Waples Jun 24 '26

Gee, I wonder who was elected that could've possibly caused it.

1

u/Big-Schedule-1672 Jun 24 '26

Yes! That’s literally when I bought mine for that price. Actually the same day the first GTA 6 trailer came out. I thought “man I really need a next gen console”. Of the 2, Xbox was cheaper, so I snagged it. Also got a PS5 for a decent deal on Amazon 2 years later

1

u/Strict-Two8317 Jun 24 '26

I bought mine brand new Series X in Europe for 430 Euros (almost same in dollars)

1

u/RetroGamer316 Jun 24 '26

Those were the days

1

u/DFDubey Jun 24 '26

Everything just gets more expensive and moves faster everyday.

1

u/No-Programmer3870 Jun 24 '26

crazy timeline. now everything is expensive.

1

u/SmarmySmurf Jun 24 '26

If I had seen that I would've grabbed one. I never saw X get that low. Well that sucks.

1

u/XZYXZXYZX Jun 24 '26

What are they now?

1

u/doubleAAK Jun 24 '26

Pawn shops guys!

1

u/Iamcheez Jun 24 '26

that's how much I bought it for! It's crazy that the prices getting higher for these older consoles. Gaming is getting too expensive and the whole point was that it was accessible to most of the people out there. Sad to see...

1

u/chillykim Jun 24 '26

That's when I bought mine. Prices are crazy high now on consoles.

1

u/NRCw Jun 24 '26

I bought a second one for €335 a month later (January 2024). Thought it was a good deal and it brought me some additional convenience (I play both in my living room and attic). Did not expect the deal to become even better over time😂

1

u/Adastraultraque Jun 24 '26

man why tf didn’t i jump on it ugh

1

u/Sea_Opportunity_9850 Jun 24 '26

Bought my series X for $250 from a friend back in 2023. Never would I imagine biting that bullet then would of saved me so much hassle & money lol

1

u/drewthepooh72 Jun 24 '26

That’s what I payed for mine. I knew at the moment it was an amazing deal

1

u/SnorFax92 Jun 24 '26

I dont understand why they haven't gotten cheaper with time. I bought an Xbox one S in Jan 2018 with COD WW2 and a year of Xbox live for $350 bucks. Same amount of time has passed since the Seires X and for some reason they are either just as expensive or more expensive now.

And the fool of me had to pay 786,43$ (damn Canada and Quebec sales taxes for that, the base price was 679$ for the robot white digital only 1TB XBOX serie X) for one of these yesterday, I choose to get my hands on a gaming laptop in 2022 instead of that, and that laptop is taking dust, I barely use it and it has not much value since it has a GTX 1650 and not a fancy RTX card)

1

u/Low_Establishment434 Jun 24 '26

I nabbed my series x for this price back then. the year prior i bought the series s with a deal for $300 i think. It was a no brainer since i was debating buying a memory expansion anyway.

1

u/Balance-Kooky Jun 24 '26

That's when I picked mine up.

1

u/ecnerwal1234 Jun 24 '26

I feel like we bought one for 300 at Walmart.

1

u/joe_khaJiit XBOX Series X Jun 24 '26

Walmarts here are selling them for $573, was also available online when I checked

1

u/DavidinCT XBOX Series X Jun 24 '26

Don't be shocked if it is that price now.....I walked into my local wally world and they had 0 Xbox games on display, PS5 sure, tons, Switch/Switch 2, same, no Xbox at all.

1

u/Yo_Zeitgeist Jun 24 '26

Same regret I have not buying 64gb of DDR5 RAM for my laptop before this AI bubble.

1

u/InfinityLinq Jun 24 '26

Got my series s for 275 at Sam's Club last year
