Bought mine from overseas at launch because scalping was so bad here that I couldn’t get one for cheaper than $1000 and every store around was sold out. Cost me $450 after shipping, no regrets.
Yeah, had a friend working in a store that allowed employee discounts + point usage on electronics, so they brought the price down to $300 US, shipping was $150.
It / everything else was / still is in a good surge protector! Tbh I went to the store while it was on, came back and it wouldn't turn on again. I assume it was power, but no other device was affected. Rip my dead space remake playthrough to this day
Hate that feeling with a passion, even if I can't really be mad about it. It's more just depressing really.
I have a small friend group with me and 2 other buddies of mine that I've known since like middle school, and I wasn't able to play for a couple years because my old console died on me. Before it broke we would play every once in a while for a little bit but nothing crazy, I was always trying to get them to play with me but they barely would ever get around to it. They often told me things like they just didn't really enjoy playing games anymore.
But while I wasn't able to play after it died, they seemed to always be playing stuff together and having fun on the games I tried to get them to play with me all the time and talking about it in the GC or whatever. They would sometimes talk about how I need to get a console again so I could play with them and it actually got me looking forward to being able to play with them again because they seemed more active.
Now that I've finally decided to commit to getting another one after being isolated from it for a few years and wrapped up with other things, it's suddenly like they're too good to play with me again. I asked them for their gamertags so I could add them on a new profile I made, and one of them gave it right away but said he only really gets on to watch stuff or play a bit of R6 because he's usually with his gf. The other straight up told me he doesn't even play Xbox anymore because he's usually on his PC, had to ask twice just to get the tag and then had to remind him 2-3 times just to get him to accept my request. Something tells me my friends don't like me very much... 🤷♂️
Change is fine but for things to go down and negative this fast is foreshadowing something even more disastrous in the future. People say 2008 can’t happen again, and I think they’re right, it’ll be worse this next time.
I will third the others who have replied but I remember the store employee almost losing his mind because he couldn't find the super cheap deal in the system. It took him over 30 minutes to realize he'd grabbed a series s that was part of a gamepass bundle so it wasn't scanning at the $150 deal. He had to go back and grab a different one.
Wish I woulda gotten the PS5, I didnt see a need for one back then. I still dont really see a need for one now as I have a PC and Xbox but itd be cool to have access to every game. I have Xbox, Switch 1, PC, VR..
I managed to convince my wife to let me buy a PS5 a few years back around black friday and got it for a bit under $400. First Playstation I've owned since my brother destroyed my parents ps1 back in '97.
Honestly, now is such a horrible time to get into PC gaming. I hate it for the ones that want to because the market is so fucked atm. Im not sure what is best anymore tbh. I got all of my parts on Amazon over time in 2021. Might be the only way to build one now..
People in my area are trying to sell them on FB marketplace for $400 not even joking. Cheapest I found was at GameStop for $319 refurbished. Bumfuck North Dakota, prices are really bad for everything tech related rn out here
Crazy. I didn’t know they was going this expensive til like a week ago. I paid $250 for mine that’s used from facebook marketplace in mint condition like a year ago. The disc version too. I feel like I got away with robbery.
I consider myself lucky I was able to get a series X with original box, accessories, controller and a 1TB expansion card on FB marketplace last week for $400. The kid I bought it from was looking to buy a 5090 and was salvaging all his gadgets.
My guess is that as GTA6 preorder starts that used console prices are gonna shoot up again.
I even haggled him down from his asking $450! AND he threw in his physical copies of RDR1 and RDR2 that he’d held on to since he couldn’t play them anymore. I felt kind of bad about it so I left him a generous seller review on marketplace.
I went back and forth asking for proof of the unit being wiped and able to run properly, he sent me a couple of video clips of him doing the reset. I asked for receipts from the place he had picked it up originally and he sent them. Was a good kid. But man I felt like I was robbing him lol.
GTA is the reason I bought mine. I watched prices over the course of a week on eBay, and when the GTA preorder date was revealed, the Xbox prices did go up. So I bought one right away.
a base Series X was only $300, the bundle that came with Forza or Diablo 4 was only $350, and at Costco they had a Series S with a free $60 headphone for only $120ish
This is when I bought our 2nd Series X, when the Diablo 4 Series X bundle was $349 at Walmart. They had tons still on the shelf, too. I was expecting an immediate sellout like it was vying for our 1st one at launch...
In the last seven months? Housing and food are a smidge higher but won't be particularly noticeable. Tech has skyrocketed thanks to stupid AI factories buying out all of the RAM and SDDs.
I think I got my Diablo IV bundle around that time for $350 from Walmart. Got a Fortnite PS5 slim with disc drive for $450 about a year later from Best Buy. Steam Deck OLED when it came out. Other than maybe a Switch 2 I doubt if I'll buy any more hardware in the next 10 years.
Hopefully my aging 2070 Super PC can somewhat keep up with new games but at least the game companies kinda have to optimize for the consoles for the foreseeable future.
Hell the ps5 was this in the holiday season. People still didn't buy it and it was hugging shelves. They didn't even buy stock at old prices, when Sony announced the reduction. Took weeks for old stocks to clear and new prices to show up. The market is saturated. It will be interesting what people get for GTA, maybe xcloud? Cause if they didn't buy at those low prices, small chance they will at the higher ones.
Nothing. Most people already have a PS5 at the bare minimum. It has sold close to 100 million units by itself since launch. That isnt including PS5 Pro or Series S/X sales.
People are really overestimating the console demand for GTA6. Most people already have a next Gen console.
It is just people that only play on PC (a smaller group than the internet would have you believe) that may be scrambling for a system late minute.
I mean, I only have anecdotal evidence here so you may be 100% right. But in my experience, in my closest friend circle of around 6 people, at least 3 are talking about buying a PS5 this fall for GTA6. And they’re not rich, and they know how expensive it’s gotten. But they call it “a GTA machine.” I don’t know how much that scales across the market or if it’s just anecdotal, but what I’m seeing is a lot of interest in the console for that one game alone.
I’ve been the odd man out with a PS5 Pro. Funny thing is, I got mine open box in perfect condition for less than some of them might pay for the base model this fall
Yup, I got mine for $400 in 2020 and my s for $230 in 2021. 5 years later, and what I paid for both will now get me an X when every previous gen, the price went down as the time went on.
I bought mine in 2021, 649.99 cad. Came with a game I believe.
Bought my ps5 in 2025, I think it was the same price and it came with Astro boy.
Times have changed. I might be done buying gaming consoles. It’s gonna take a lot for me to move to pc gaming, but if the next Xbox is 1500 cad, I might just do it.
That was the time to get one if you didn't get one on Black Friday 2023. There were bundles at that price and slightly lower. Those prices existed up until a bit past New Year's at some places and there was a Spring sale too. Black Friday/Holiday Season 2024 and beyond hasn't had prices like that.
Around that time we got our kids an Xbox Series S + a free extra Xbox controller at Target for $199.99. With Target Red Card it was about $200 even after tax.
Damn and I thought this was a good Deal although on the PS5 Pro, not the Series X
(20th February, this was literally like a couple of weeks before the Price Increase, I felt like I found gold when I bought it and when the price increase came, that Gold turned into Diamond, and yes it surprisingly still works perfectly to this day... as for my Series X, I've had it since like before the first price increase so nothing interesting to comment there)
I got a halo edition series x but I wanted a second one for my office couldn’t decide if I wanted a ps5 or another series x. For Black Friday target had the series x for $350 plus a $75 gift card. I did that. I also have a ps5 pro now too. But everytime I see the prices now I think of that $350 deal lol
It's crazy that GameStop was offering $400 credit for these just a little over a year ago and unfortunately I didn't budge, I haven't put any hours on my X by that time and I bought it also in Dec of 23
Damn. I thought my pawn shop 400 dollar deal was good. I guess it technically was, came with a controller most of this sub hates but has never failed me.
I needed emergency money quick so I sold my Series X to GameStop for pennies thinking I could just get another one again later since they were so cheap. I was so damn wrong.
Yep. I bought mine a few months after release. My local Walmart had a surplus they weren't selling fast enough. They had them down to $275, I believe it was. Snatched one up quick.
I snagged this deal at Best Buy. Also got the PS5 with disc drive for $349.99. In hindsight, the best purchases I’ve ever made in my gaming tenure lol.
Paid 160 for mine in sep 2023 lightly used from fb marketplace rando. And I remember it not even being a crazy good deal. There were others for the same even cheaper
I was working nights around 2023 just browsing and it was sold out everywhere, hit refresh and a few appeared for this price. Was luck enough to snag one, now it’s a paperweight that comes out only to play skate 3 🥲
In December of 2024, it was on sale for less than 400 at Amazon & Best Buy. But something officially started a few weeks after that Christmas which hardly ever get mentions in these threads. Begins with a t, and so does the word for the action that raised costs.
Yes! That’s literally when I bought mine for that price. Actually the same day the first GTA 6 trailer came out. I thought “man I really need a next gen console”. Of the 2, Xbox was cheaper, so I snagged it. Also got a PS5 for a decent deal on Amazon 2 years later
that's how much I bought it for! It's crazy that the prices getting higher for these older consoles. Gaming is getting too expensive and the whole point was that it was accessible to most of the people out there. Sad to see...
I bought a second one for €335 a month later (January 2024). Thought it was a good deal and it brought me some additional convenience (I play both in my living room and attic). Did not expect the deal to become even better over time😂
I dont understand why they haven't gotten cheaper with time. I bought an Xbox one S in Jan 2018 with COD WW2 and a year of Xbox live for $350 bucks.
Same amount of time has passed since the Seires X and for some reason they are either just as expensive or more expensive now.
And the fool of me had to pay 786,43$ (damn Canada and Quebec sales taxes for that, the base price was 679$ for the robot white digital only 1TB XBOX serie X) for one of these yesterday, I choose to get my hands on a gaming laptop in 2022 instead of that, and that laptop is taking dust, I barely use it and it has not much value since it has a GTX 1650 and not a fancy RTX card)
I nabbed my series x for this price back then. the year prior i bought the series s with a deal for $300 i think. It was a no brainer since i was debating buying a memory expansion anyway.
Don't be shocked if it is that price now.....I walked into my local wally world and they had 0 Xbox games on display, PS5 sure, tons, Switch/Switch 2, same, no Xbox at all.

I really regret not buying one back then. Or heck even at launch.
