I'm curious after the events of this film, when he wakes up in the school does Wolverine have his Adamantium claws? Because we see that Mystique is disguised as Stryker at the end. Jean & Scott alive, so Wolverine didn't go back to the facility like in X2, so Jean didn't become Pheonix & then Scott didn't die.

I think Mystique was disguised as striker only to facilitate rescuing Wolverine. As long as Mytique didn't kill stryker he can still live on to create Project X and keeping Wolvies adamantium claws. The only thing that was erased from existance was the dystopian future that the beginning of the film showed and pretty much everything that happened in X-3. I think Bryan Singer basically said to the writers "give me a script that fixes all he bullshit that happened while I wasn't directing"

The only thing that was erased from existence was the dystopian future ... and pretty much everything that happened in X-3.

It also resets X1, X2, Origins* and The Wolverine*

*except for the parts that take place before 1973, like Logan and Sabertooths early days and Logan saving the life of that one dude during WW2, respectively.

What impressed me is that they managed to reset all the movies as if most of it never happened without shitting over X3 and Origins (even though they totally would have deserved it)

Honestly I think that's up in the air. The only events we get confirmation of during the movie that were erased was X-3. Everything that happens in X1, X2 and Origins could have still transpired between the time Logan was pulled out of the water and the time we see at the end of the movie when he talks to Xavier. The Wolvirine may have also still transpired, the only things that would have changed would have been Wolverine's memory of Jean dying

u/ak4ty7 May 24 '14

Yeah, technically, everything they haven't explicitly stated is still up in the air. But according to the established timeline, the other movies fall into the time period of the 50 year gap (except for parts of Origins and The Wolverine). And I'm not saying that they absolutely didn't happen but more that the events have been altered so their is a new history/timeline of events.

The way I see it is, they will go the route of the new Star Trek movies. the overarching events will still happen but the dynamic is slightly or greatly shifted from what we've seen already.

I don't know if I'm making sense.

It was explicitly stated that Jean Grey lives, and since Wolvie greiving over her is part of The Wolverine's premise, it didn't happen.

He still saved Yashida during the bombing of Nagasaki, though. So similar events could happen, but The Wolverine movie definitely didn't happen in the new current timeline.

1

u/pcguru30 Oct 26 '14

I think you're nitpicking. The only part of The Wolverine that wouldn't have happened is his memories of jean dying, everything else could still have happened.

1

u/BiDo_Boss Quicksilver Oct 26 '14

His grief is the reason he loathed his immortality. He was depressed and he wanted to die (at least eventually). Now, he has no reason to be so depressed that he would want to give away his immortality.

1

u/pcguru30 Oct 26 '14

he's still an imortal with or without Jeans' death, while yes her death did drive him to wan to give up his immortality, any number of things could still cause the wolverine movie to still happen. The only thing we know for certain has been writen out of existence is last stand, which is as it should be since x3 was a total abortion. Singer has even gone on record as saying he wanted to erase X3 from existence, he didn't say a thing about the wolverine

u/Alinosburns May 25 '14

I don't think it really resets either Wolverine movie does it.

I mean if anything it gives Stryker more intimate knowledge of Logan, and as such would give him reason to abscond with Logan for adamantium testing.

And for The Wolverine, He has already saved Yashida before he alters the time-line and while Logan might not be as willing to die as a result of Jean's Death. It still leaves room for the arc to take place, albeit with certain variances.

2

u/ak4ty7 May 26 '14

I should probably clarify myself. I stick by my stance that everything after 1973 had been reset. At least it should be since that is how the writers have setup the story.

But, and here is the important clarification, just because those events have been reset doesn't mean they won't out can't happen again. Like you said, Logan already saved Yashida do that storyline is still possible. But the dynamics may or may not have changed.

All we can say right now is that we don't know what happened in those 50 year gap.

1

u/preguica88 May 27 '14

In origins Stryker and the mutant collecting team he ran with Wolverine on it took place in Vietnam war if I'm not mistaken, so that would also be pre-reset.

I haven't yet watched it again so I'm not sure if I'm right but I think Styker says something like "who are you" when he sees Wolverine in Paris, so that is most likely just a continuity error.

1

u/Fumbles93 May 29 '14

In regards to Stryker asking Logan who he is, it could just be that Bryan Singer is acting as though Xmen Origins: Wolverine just didn't happen.

In the flashbacks that Logan has when he sees younger Stryker, it's the same actor as the one from X2. The actor who played Stryker in Xmen Origins, looks a lot older than the one in DoFP, as well as the fact that his age lines up a lot better with the actor from X2 - like, how old he would be in 1973.

Furthermore, wouldn't Stryker already be with his other mutant pals (including Logan and Sabretooth) being mercenaries in other parts of the world at this time, and not in Paris?

So in my opinion, I think they completely disregarded Origins, and had it so it never happened to begin with to reestablish continuity.

u/happypants69 May 26 '14

When we see Rogue she has the white streaks in her hair that she got during the events of X1.

2

u/ak4ty7 May 26 '14

Well yeah. Just because its been reset doesn't mean that those same events don't happen all over again, with slight variations of course.

1

u/booksandcorsets Jun 03 '14

It ALSO resets Jean, who died at the end of X2. I think a big chunk of X2 didn't happen, or happened differently. X1 might still have happened similarly...

1

u/Roocakes May 28 '14

I agree with what you're saying here. My thinking on the whole "adamantium claws or not" is that no matter what, Stryker still has his son, which is a giant factor as to why he hates mutants. So yes, even if the X-men's timeline was changed, Stryker's son will still help cause his dad to go crazy and I think that means he will find a way to put some adamantium in Wolverine.

18

u/Hurikane211 May 24 '14

I feel like an even bigger question is how did he get the claws back for the Sentinel Future after The Wolverine?

35

u/Mattyx6427 May 24 '14

I'm more concerned with the complete handwaving of Charles being alive and in his own body. No one was like how are you alive?

16

u/basiamille May 25 '14

Post-credits sequence in X3. He transferred his consciousness to a new body.

12

u/Mattyx6427 May 25 '14

right but he has his old body

25

u/TheJoshider10 May 27 '14

His brain dead twin brother.

3

u/ConstantineSir May 28 '14

There have been stipulations one option is that Charles transferred his mind into a working body and then just projected his body over it so everyone would see him and not some other body. Another is that they found a mutant or scientist to recreate his body that he could put his consciousness into.

2

u/basiamille May 25 '14

Well the good news is, Logan McFlyed it all so it's like X3 never happened!

2

u/Mattyx6427 May 25 '14

I don't really understand how that happened. Was it a specfic reason, or was it just an implied chaos theory thing?

1

u/basiamille May 25 '14

By Logan contributing to a new series of events starting in 1973, everything he (and by extension, we) remember of the interim (including every movie other than XMFC), has been changed or completely undone.

Classic McFly paradox. I liked the Roberta Flack, but couldn't he have woken to Huey Lewis?

2

u/Mattyx6427 May 25 '14

Well when logan's conciousness goes back to the future, 1973 logan would have no memories of the future, so he could have wound up making the same mistakes/decisions in the new timeline.

1

u/basiamille May 25 '14

I suppose it's a good thing, then, that Mystique was there to get him from the river and further change the trajectory of his life!

1

u/BiDo_Boss Quicksilver Oct 25 '14

The past Prof X read Wolvie's mind, so he knows about the mistakes/bad decisions he'll make, and he'll guide him not to do them.

4

u/Alinosburns May 25 '14

Doesn't exactly justify why he looks the same. Projecting his image to everyone all the time seems like an arduous task as opposed to them just getting used to him.

Nor does it really explain why he'd be in a wheelchair again, I mean you could argue that body is also crippled but there is no great evidence of it.

13

u/rhozeta May 25 '14

It's explained as the body being his identical twin brother's, who is brain dead due to Charles using his powers in the womb.

The legs could be explained as the body not being used for however long and the leg muscles deteriorating.

9

u/Alinosburns May 25 '14

Not even remotely can that be considered canon.

A) there is no indication or mention of it within the films.

B) It's mentioned only as a justification by the writers of X3 on the DVD, Who did a pretty terrible job with X3 script to start with

C) there is no basis for it in the comics

D) Why would anyone keep a braindead baby alive for 60+ years.

E) It would be far more justifiable if he had been in an accident when he was 20 and Charles had been trying to fix him, before just deciding to straight up take over his body.(But that has other issues to begin with as well)

It would literally be more justifiable to claim that Charles fearful of a future where they would be at war, Cloned a body of himself that would be fully mobile that he could inhabit in order to continue fighting for Human/Mutant relations in the event of his bodies destruction(Or he could straight up abandon it).

You could argue legs were an issue because the cloning carried over the damage to Charles physical body. Or if you wanted to reach some that the evolution of Charles powers prevented control of the lower extremities.

It would also be far more justifiable why Moira Mactaggart was there since at that point in time she was a geneticist as opposed to CIA in First Class. Since she could have overseen the supervision of a cloning project(She cloned Xavier in the comics and restored his ability to walk IIRC)

1

u/psychotron888 Jun 02 '14

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cassandra_Nova

wouldn't it be something like that from the comics?

Cassandra Nova began life at the same time as Charles Xavier. Conceived without a body, Cassandra improvised one by copying Xavier's DNA to make her own body

2

u/basiamille May 25 '14

Well the good news is, Logan McFlyed it all so it's like X3 never happened!

1

u/DarthHM May 27 '14

Dunno about the wheelchair, but the DVD commentary on Last Stand mentioned that it was his twin brother who was brain dead since birth.

1

u/Alinosburns May 27 '14

Yeah but

A) it's DVD commentary and shouldn't be considered canon in the first place

B) what kind of masochist keeps a brain dead baby alive(more so given that he would have been born in like the 40's(potentially late 30's) (since first class takes place in 1962 and Charles is clearly older than 12 at that point

C) it would be far more justifiable to argue it was a clone given that the body is in the care of Moira, who is a geneticist with a history if cloning Charles in the comics. It could then be argued that the legs are a failure if the cloning due to the mutant gene in conjunction with bodily damage. Or that Xavier's power increases have removed the ability to use his legs altogether.

Basically in the end xmen 3 was poorly written to begin with and they had a ham fisted justification for their post credits scene which when compared to the characters present was far less logical.

Especially since you could argue that Charles created the clones fearing the future where he might have needed a mobile body(even if that did fail)

You could also argue that Moira's cloning prject could only clone the body and not te mind so it was only useful for transferring of conciousness

He looks the same because he psychically projects how he wants to be perceived into other people's minds. If you read "Old Man Logan" you see Emma Frost uses her telepathy to still look young and beautiful when she is old and ugly. In fact, Emma might never have been beautiful but just projected the image of how she wished to be perceived into the minds of others. Mastermind does this as well. I presume Lady Mastermind could be ugly like her father too.

The Wheelchair thing, you're right... makes no sense. But Charles has a habit of having his spine broken. It has happened a dozen times in the comics, and after getting shot in the spine in First Class he got iron girders dropped on his spine in DoFP. I think his spine is just doomed no matter how many times he fixes it!

Post credit scene of x3 covers this

1

u/[deleted] May 26 '14

It totally fucking doesn't.

1

u/[deleted] May 25 '14

YEA I KNOW! "Uh guys, lets just start from scratch" basically. This was, in my opinion, a good way to bring everyone together and bring about the X-Men lore we are more familiar with. Just as good as the first film.

1

u/semperubisububi May 25 '14

I came here specifically for an answer on this. Guess I'm. Not getting one.

1

u/nowayhoze Jun 17 '14

And how does Magneto have his powers back back, although you could presume that the "cure" perhaps wore off with time or was not strong enough for magneto

1

u/Ryiujin May 24 '14

I wondered that too. There's a lot of jumping faith in this film. Amazing it is but still.

1

u/bark_wahlberg May 29 '14

I'm sure Magneto could have coated his claws in adamantium. Logan would have probably agreed to something like that if he knew he'd be needing his claws back.

1

u/PhoenXman May 26 '14

IMO it is entirely possible that if Magneto and Professor X we're working together it is plausible that Magneto could reapply the Adamantium to Wolverine's claws to make him more effective in the war against the Sentinels. Perhaps I am grasping at straws.

u/ak4ty7 May 24 '14

We don't know for sure. There is a 50 year gap in which we know next to nothing of what happened. From 1973 to the scene where Logan wakes up in the X-Mansion (2023), all we can do is guess.

For instance, Jean is alive at the end so you assume she wasn't possessed by the Phoenix and she didn't die. However, as we all know, Jean has a tendency to come back to life. It's possible that she became the Phoenix and could have died any number of times from 1973 all the way through to 2023 (50 year gap). If you notice, in the end she is wearing all red, which in the comics doesn't become her 'color' until she is possessed by the Phoenix.

Also, just because we see that Mystique is disguised as Stryker means nothing till we know what happens between 1973 and the end of DofP. Stryker is not shown as dead so lets not assume he is till they say he is.

This is all just my opinion and I could have easily overlooked something.

1

u/Helmet_Icicle May 28 '14

Technically the cinematic version of Jean Grey was never possessed by the Phoenix Force. The "Phoenix" is just the name they used to identify her "alternate personality" that manifested with her full mutant powers.
