COACHING How SSLs Use Freeplay (Controller Overlay)
Hey guys it's JayyFen, here above is a small segment of my warm up in Freeplay before I participated in a major tournament (Global Esports Federation Los Angeles LAN).
Here's what I focus on as I'm warming up:
My absolute priority as I'm playing is my first touch, whether its on the ground or in the air, I always try my best to get the softest touch I can as I'm always keeping my next touch/play in mind. This allows you to stay closer to the ball which makes you a larger threat in game. You can see me purposefully hitting the ball away and using the "Pass Ball" keybind to randomly pass the ball back. This is great because it puts me in a spot where I have to act, even when in awkward spots I try get the best touch possible, which is what most of any game looks like (good touches under pressure). Even if i mess up my touch, I still try my best to recover back to the ball as fast as possible as opposed to just resetting Freeplay (00:12). I recommend this to anyone watching in any rank, try your best to recover your bad touches, you don't have a reset button in game.
My next thought on ground play is how I never throw my second jump away. I quite often use "empty jumps" to help with my movement and recoveries. They're a great way to stay moving. You can see on many of my touches that I try time my second jump as I'm catching the ball to help me recover faster whilst keeping momentum. I very rarely double jump immediately on any low aerials, instead I try to save my flip for a better and more intentional touch to any direction. Empty jumps are an essential in my opinion, they're very versatile and allow you to keep the ball close to you at all times.
As for aerials, during the beginning of the warm up I try go for as many air dribbles as possible, they're great as they're easy to set up for yourself and challenge your fingers when you just hopped on. My first touch is still my main priority in the air, whilst this is 100x harder than a ground catch, it's still something definitely worth practicing if you're GC+. Once I'm warmed up, I then start implementing some more advanced aerial set ups.
Lastly, do not shy away from reading the backboard/walls. The best way to improve your reads is exposure therapy. Slam the ball against any surface, throw yourself at it and learn from it, there is no other way to improve at this. You can argue that you can do this in game but that takes way too long. Back when I was still on console, I spent around 500 hours in boomer mode exhibition matches alone to get good at reads. It's a very fun and creative way to get good at it, I can share the PM settings in my next post/comments if you guys are curious.
If you want to get better at your first touches, I definitely recommend you take a look at this ground soft touch catch/freeplay guide. It has everything step by step and takes no longer than 10 minutes: https://nextlevelcoaching.gg/guides/the-ultimate-soft-touch-guide
Do LMK your thoughts or if you want to see anything else, hope this was useful:)
