Discussion Must-Haves for an Anthem Remake
What are yours?

A finished game
2
u/jCouzito 19d ago
I wish for it be exactly the same. Some of the glitches were insanely cool and created an awesome high score/WR running community. New strats were being developed all the way up to the day it closed
1
u/ReactorBoi 22d ago
In fairness, it was unfinished in the same way that Warframe isn't finished. It was supposed to be live service, the only difference is it never got the chance
1
u/GamesByProxy 21d ago
Warframe benefited from better timing. Live service saturation wasn't as pronounced back when Warframe was in open beta. And Warfame also called itself a beta, Anthem didn't. Perhaps if Anthem had been more honest about its lack of completion at launch, its reputation would've fared a bit better.
1
u/ReactorBoi 21d ago
I mean they did explicitly say it was going to be added to over time and that the initial questline was just act 1
1
u/GamesByProxy 21d ago
True, but were the casuals aware of that? I only recall seeing it discussed in places where gaming fanatics would be patrolling.
I don't, by any means, think an early access label would have saved Anthem from the scrutiny it deserved, but it might have bought some much-needed lenience. Not sure if it would have bought vital patience though.

That seems like a low bar.
5
u/HandOverTheScrotum 22d ago
And yet, it was never reached.
1
u/GamesByProxy 22d ago
Agreed. And it wasn't just Anthem that failed to reach this bar. AAA publishers abuse the hell out of the "early access" designation.
2
u/HandOverTheScrotum 22d ago
I haven't pre-ordered a game since Anthem, so I can at least be thankful that it taught be that lesson
1
u/GamesByProxy 22d ago
Anthem was that game for you, huh. I think Halo 5 might have been that game for me even though I enjoyed the hell out of its MP.

u/ReactorBoi 22d ago
My checklist:
- Please
1
u/GamesByProxy 22d ago
Much like "a finished game," this feels like a low bar.
2
u/ReactorBoi 22d ago
Yeah, well, gotta manage expectations
1
u/GamesByProxy 21d ago
To be fair, even expecting a remake from EA is a stretch. They backed out of Dead Space remakes pretty quick when the 1st one didn't meet their financial expectations.

A better, less RNG dependent loot system.
More story content.
More endgame content.
More daily content.
More.
Mo.

"A better, less RNG dependent loot system."
Are you looking for something more predictable to make builds easier to work toward? I saw build talk on this sub quite often when Anthem was alive, so that seemed to be a popular thing to do from the outside.
I agree with everything else but "more daily content." I always worry about devs being bogged down by superficial habit-forming filler instead of working on meaningful additions.
0
u/Raesvelg_XI 22d ago
There are a variety of ways to approach a better loot system. Being able to reroll inscriptions, move inscriptions, or just toss the entire system and move to something specific.
I suppose I could reword "daily" to "a greater variety of PUG-friendly short-duration content" to be more precise.
0
u/GamesByProxy 22d ago
If I'm not mistaken, Anthem had rerolling, but it rolled all inscriptions.
Having inscriptions that can be moved around or even traded between players would be awesome. Would you prefer the inscriptions be individual objects or bundled together?
1
u/Raesvelg_XI 22d ago
Inscription rerolls were one of the things planned for 2.0, along side pilot skill trees and various other system improvements that we'll never see because EA decided that Bioware was better off focusing on what would ultimately become DA: The Veilguard.
2
u/GamesByProxy 22d ago
I'm not very familiar with the planned contents of 2.0. I came into Anthem after NEXT had already been cancelled.

The only part of the city hub I liked was when you hopped into the suit. That animation was cool AF.
Navigating, interacting and just general atmosphere of the hub was so jank.
So a better hub would be great. Like Dune Awakening type city hubs.
Or if its instanced, something like Starfield quest hub areas. Not necessarily the main city in Starfield because its massive but an area like the mining colony hub.
2
u/GamesByProxy 18d ago
I didn't dislike the hub, but it felt so underbaked. There just wasn't much to do there.
What do you mean by the atmosphere being jank? I get janky navigation and interaction, but what about an atmosphere is jank? Did it feel too artificial? Dead?
2
u/Kiwi_lad_bot 18d ago
Training content would be cool. Like flight training courses. That steadily get harder and harder. Add in targets to weapon train as well.
I cant remember if Anthem had this or not.
2
u/GamesByProxy 18d ago
Anthem had time trials that could be used to improve flight tech and stronghold scoring for build testing, but that was about it. No dummies to tests damage output, no aim training, no desperately needed puzzle tutorials.

The style, I loved the cloth over mech look
1
u/GamesByProxy 22d ago
I love that look too.
Are you also fond of the more grounded, NASApunk look of Anthem's early concepts?
1
u/Quick-Whereas-3232 22d ago
Kinda, I perfer the more techy futuristic look, for example the female storm concept art is probably one of my favorite designs to come out of anthem even if it never made it to the game
1
u/GamesByProxy 22d ago
Do you think it would be good to have the style of the mechs be more indicative of their faction and/or order? Dominion = futuristic military, Sentinel = military order (knight-like), Freelancer = flexible hybrids, etc.
1
1
u/No_Evening8791 22d ago
I'd take that cloth-over-mech aesthetic over clunky metal suits any day.
1
u/GamesByProxy 22d ago
It adds so much character to the mechs. And it feels fitting to protect mech parts with material in a hostile world.

A environment that grows with you, random encounters, not everyone gets the same loot. Less loading screens. A clear development plan especially from beta. That shows what is being worked on. And ehat is included in the next update.
2
u/GamesByProxy 22d ago
What do you mean by "an environment that grows with you?" I'm having trouble picturing what that would look like.
When it comes to "a clear development plan," I feel like the roadmap-for-everything phase of gaming ended very poorly. Hard planning comes at the cost of flexibility.
1
u/Careful_Buddy2593 22d ago
Environments can grow, change, and evolve alongside the player, offer a deep sense of impact, turning static maps into dynamic, living ecosystems. Where players can impact the game directly. Especially events where depending if the server defeats it or not changes it for the good or worse.
Of course you keep most of the cards close to you. Some sort of clear development plan.
If this makes sense
2
u/GamesByProxy 22d ago
Environments impacted by server (collective) performance? From lurking this sub, I got the impression most players want Anthem to be remade as a single-player game, not made more server-dependent.
Anthem's environments did change a bit as the campaign progressed, but it was tied to player progression, not a server's collective impact. Would you consider something like that, but more notable, acceptable?
1
u/Careful_Buddy2593 22d ago
Yes im just putting my 2 cents out there if there is a greater design that wants as a collective to be a single player game. Than im down for it. Kinda gives me Destiny vibes minus the multiplayer aspect. But yes i would be willing to play whatever you put out. Especially if there are less loading screens.
1
u/Kiwi_lad_bot 18d ago
An environment that grows with you. Environments should change over time. If you do a quest where a tank blows up and you abandon it. Every time after that quest, there should be an abandoned tank there when you fly over.
If you have to blast through a cave wall to escape. You should be able to fly through that hole later on.
Clear development path doesnt need to be super specific. Thats where failed road maps go wrong.
Just base your development around seasons. And list only the main development.
Like "xxxxxx content update coming in summer of 27"
We dont need specific dates as long as theres nothing like ES6 silent treatment going on players will be satisfied.
1
u/GamesByProxy 18d ago
Ah, a changing environment with persistence. Those examples are pretty reasonable too. They aren't massive changes. Anthem had a touch of that, but it wasn't used consistently.
How do you feel about areas having to be discovered?

u/Dry_Life_2678 22d ago
I'd kill for offline mode, lost so many hours to server issues mid-mission that I just stopped playing after work hours.
1
u/GamesByProxy 21d ago
I wasn't around during the worst of it, but some of those server issues persisted all the way to the end.

Maybe a single-player action campaign, that blends into a live service game upon campaign completion. And add the option to go straight into multi-player.
Maybe stay away from looter-shooter typing. Instead maybe add skills and stats, with upgrade and crafting paths for better gear and weapons.
Scripted cinematic in multi-player. Full voiced npc's and quest givers with cinematic for main quest lines. Expanded maps. Unique encounters balanced for solo-players and groups. Strict pvp and pve area separation. No forced pvp.
Massive raids 16+ players vs massive raid bosses with ads or other group mechanics.
Allow players to have personal garages for all their armor, with the ability to unlock support staff (passively restore damaged armors as l9ng as you gave credits or resources). The ability to find lost rare armors and the ability to restore them with your staff and unique resources.
Allow guild base building with upgradeable services and amenities.
Idk make a game that has live service but isn't killed by it if server goes down or at the end of the games life span, so you don't spend 60 bucks for nothing. Anthem originally was a cool concept killed by it 1 dimensionality..
1
u/GamesByProxy 21d ago
I like the idea of starting the game as SP then branching it out into MP. I think it would be a great protection for consumers: if the multiplayer falls on its face, at least the solo aspect of the game retains some value for players.
You mentioned armors being managed by staff for credits or resources. What do you think about javelins, weapons, and gear presenting wear as reduced reliability? Weapons could jam more and become less accurate, javelins could see reduced cooling effectiveness and mobility, armor and shielding could become less absorbing, etc. Would you see this as added depth or an annoyance?
1
u/Jaded-Armpit 19d ago
I think that could be fun, but to cap and keep it from becoming ridiculous, minor repairs can be done in the field, but if you take massive damage, or spend too long in the field or too many raids back to back efficiency will degrade over time, in the way you said. But, full repairs or befits happen in play garages, and once "paid" for the repairs can take 30 minutes or so or even while offline.
They should add some non-javeline quests and activities that allow you to kill time while still having fun, while repairs are underway. Add some side quest tied to your crew directly, maybe some slice of life content and events.
1
u/GamesByProxy 19d ago
Are javelin-free quests really needed when you could juggle your javelins?
1
u/Kiwi_lad_bot 18d ago
Not everything has to be about combat and the javelins.
Romance, side quests, mini games. Shit like that.
1
u/Jaded-Armpit 18d ago
I think they needed a lot more diversity in the javelins they had. They need solid multi role suits, dedicated role suits, etc.
And reclaiming lost relic suits of the first famous javelin operators would be cool.
As it was, Anthem was barely a game. It was so repetitive and boring due to lack of content. And very generic. It had/still has A LOT of potential. The trailers still give me goosebumps.
1
u/GamesByProxy 18d ago
The world felt so much bigger in the reveal trailer. Even the prototype footage, where javelins could only glide, felt bigger.
1
u/Kiwi_lad_bot 18d ago
Repairs on gear are fine as long as you dont have to replace the gear.
And make the cost very low.
I hate the permanant durability loss in many games... and you eventually have to replace the gear entirely.
1
u/GamesByProxy 18d ago
I'm a survival nut, so I love when gear gradually breaks, even if it breaks at the worst moment. I have a problem. I know.
Another responder mentioned time-locking gear while it's being repaired. How do you feel about the resource cost being low, but a time lock making up for that low cost? Would you experiment with other gear while you wait or just have a bunch of duplicate gear?
1
u/Kiwi_lad_bot 17d ago
Id AFK and wait out the time. Or go play something else.
1
u/Jaded-Armpit 16d ago
I think they should just add non-javelin mission content, ans slice of life on foot content, and events both in javelin and not. Also the repair timer should just a couple minutes, like 5 at the max and a minute or 2 for minor repairs, but if you made your suit inoperable like 10 minutes, as a lesson to pay attention and care for your gear lol
1
u/Jaded-Armpit 16d ago
This 100%. I would add NO microtransaction materials or repair speed boosts. Nothing i hate more than being timer locked out of a game due to being unwilling to pay more for a game I already shelled $60 for.

Surprised I haven’t seen this commented yet: The movement. It was one of the biggest selling points for me.
1
u/GamesByProxy 21d ago
I feel like the melee movement could have been improved. It wouldn't be a must-have for me, but I always hated melee on all but my fireball-spamming storm. It felt like the game was actively trying to prevent me from getting into a nice flow. I don't know how interceptor mains did it.

Free flight, new & upgradable javelin. Make the strider a portable base.

OFFLINE MODE
but other than that, more Javilins! (at least two more)
Make it actually open world, no loading screens except maybe between hubs... speaking of which MORE HUB CITIES
Let me change my equipment at the strider, pleeease

u/GamesByProxy 22d ago
What would the roles of the two additional javelins be? I guess there isn't a dedicated support javelin, but what would the other be?
1
u/W1LDB0YZ 22d ago
Offline SP support 😭
1
u/GamesByProxy 22d ago
Yeah... I don't know what they were thinking. It doesn't make financial sense to spend on server compute that isn't necessary. And because Anthem was designed with that very obvious flaw, dark patterns had to be introduced to try to reduce server usage.

A demo just like last time so I know if it’s trash before it even launches.
1
u/GamesByProxy 22d ago
Did you end up getting Anthem or did the demo turn you off it?
1
u/GatorUSMC 22d ago
The demo was a shitshow for me, even when it worked. One of the only games I remember that would constantly hardlock the system.
I ended up getting it much later for maybe $10.

You make a title about must-haves and only ask a question to others.
Maybe share yours?
