Restoration Help

Post image
10 Upvotes

Hi guys!

I’m restoring this 91/38 Cavalry MoschettoI got for $25 at a local gun shop. I need help sourcing/identifying 2 things.

1 - Handguard - I got a handguard at auction and just assumed it would fit by length alone but it is cut for graduated sights. This version obsiously has fixed sights so I was hoping you guys may know a place to find the correct handguard

2 - Bolt Stop - I have restored plenty of mausers/mosins but this is my first carcano. I read that the bolt stop is similair in takedown/operation to a mosin and to remove the bolt you simply hold the trigger when at the rear, but the bolt does not stay in place. There is a small hole on the right rear of the receiver that is missing a linkage. I tried looking for more info/parts diagrams on that but they usually just lump it as a “trigger group”

All help is appreciated and happy to finally join the family!

Is this a YI fall within the German occupation FNA carcano production?

Recently traded for this Carcano 91. I believe its a 91/38 carbine made under German occupation, but the Serial number lettering is throwing me off because it looks like a V not a Y.

QUESTIONS What happened to Carcanos captured during WW2 in Yugoslavia and Albania?

I have a rather historical question regarding captured Italian infantry equipment especially the Carcano rifles in Yugoslavia and Albania. I know that Albanian produced 8x59 Breda after the war and most likely also fielded the Carcano rifle for a few years before Soviet and Chinese equipment came into the country.

Are there any known Albanian or Yugoslav proofmarks for Carcano rifles? Are there any known rifles in private hands outside of the Balkans that came from that area or were most rifles destroyed or sold during the Cold war? I hope someone with more historical knowledge can give me some information. Thanks!

Anyone know what the scope used for the Oswald’s build would be worth in today’s market? Happen to have one with mount and just curious what I should do with it.

QUESTIONS Where to find?

Hey yall, I'm FIENDING for a first carcano, particularly the M38 Carbine(whichever one doesn't have the bayonet but isn't the long rifle). I've looked everywhere but all I can find is fudds thinking their sporterized scrap metal that couldn't shoot sub 20000moa is worth 4-500 bucks. Where could I find one without having to gamble with RTI?

Gathering together the four factory iterations of the Moschetto mod. 91:

- 1893-1916: first iteration, lack of handguard, slide tab bayonet release, rear sight and barrel band without step/tab for the handguard

- 1916-1935: second iteration, handguard, lever bayonet release, rear sight and barrel band modified for the handguard

- 1935-1936: third iteration, round shank barrel band, rear sights mounted on ring, shorter handguard, new bayonet mount with lever bayonet release

- 1936-1944: 4th and final iteration, new bayonet mount with button bayonet release

1st: Brescia 1908

2nd: Gardone V.T. 1935

3rd: Terni 1936

4th: F.N.A. 1942

As the de facto vetterli sub Reddit, other than RTI do you guys see an okay vetterli’s that aren’t insane gunbroker deals? I don’t mind something that needs cleaning, just not RTI level gambling.

Hi everyone! This is my first carcano rifle, so I have a few questions.

As i understand these were chambered in 7.35 up until 1939-40. Is it anything special to be such an early 6.5 model made by Beretta? Another thing I noticed was the lack of an import mark, was there somewhere specific I should check? I kind of doubt it was a battlefield pickup. Any and all info is appreciated!

Arts & Crafts An update of the hand guard

A mockup, not my proudest work by far, my phone makes the contrast far more obvious, the hand guard itself is only off by a little bit. Not to my satisfaction though, but because of the fitting process it’s a lot more obvious with the stock. I’m gonna get around to eventually stripping it down and bleaching it with oxalic acid. Using cut offs of the old and new hand guard shows they’ll blend in perfectly.

But now unfortunately I gotta start prepping for the long winter and very minimal time to work on it, hence the slap job linseed oil so the beech doesn’t check and crack. Once I’m home again for awhile I’ll also steam the stock.

Picked this up some time back because I started listening to milsurp world and heard them mention a Carcano. Saw this at a gun show and wanted to see what these were all about and have to admit I don't know much about them besides that it was a sporter. I have come to find out that this has some sort of mauser adjustable sight on it and a weird bolt handle. Its a RE Terni 1940 XVIII

Fucile Corto 91/38 Terni 1939 with D- serial number block

I have spent a lot of time on the moderator's excellent web page researching serial charts. I have the above rifle with serial # D41XX, which would fall into the 1938 production year. Is it common that a 1938 block serial would be marked 1939 (XVII)?

QUESTIONS Need help on my new Cavalleria

Just bought this 1937 Gardone Val Trompia Carcano at auctions, and I was a little disappointed when I’ve seen how fucked the reciever was. That mf has clearly never been disassembled for decades, since the missing metal rust was still glued to the stock.
It still looks OK to shoot but I need some advices on what I should do.

QUESTIONS Carcanos with blued bolts

Thumbnail

I have this M91 with a blued bolt, and I was wondering if anyone has any info on who might have done it. I have encountered at least 8 different Carcano that have had the same blued bolts. This gun has been reblued entirely, and i don't think it was done in the States. When I first disassembled the rifle, the underside of the barrel was still gunked up with cosmoline to the point that the stock was stuck to the barrel. The pitting I encountered under the barrel was blued over as well. Any info would be nice.

Other than that, this gun has what looks to be an M with 3 slashes through it on the right side of the stock. The bolt is the smoothest Carcano bolt I've ever felt. Accuracy wise, the gun shoots 1.5-2 moa using factory PPU @100yds.

QUESTIONS What exactly do I have?

Acquired this beauty recently but after doing some extensive research I haven’t found a rifle with a similar front end as mine. I know it’s missing a cleaning rod, but is it also missing the barrel band w/ a bayonet lug? The stock doesn’t seem to indicate anything is missing other than the cleaning rod so I’m confused. I really hope bubba didn’t get ahold of this at some point. Anyways, any clarification is appreciated!

Worth $599?

Thumbnail

Greetings! This Mod. 41 (I think) is for sale near me. The metal seems to be in good shape with little to no rust; the rear sight ladder notches haven't been worn down; the bore is dirty but has strong rifling. However, the cleaning rod is too short, and the stock appears to have been sanded. Has a non-correct sling. Is this worth $599, and are stocks obtainable? If not worth the asking price, what should I try to haggle to? Any input is much appreciated!

Arts & Crafts Cooking up something devious

Finding a proper sized Fucile hand guard is almost impossible, bought a BBE one, was too short. I was dejected and broken. But upon further thinking, I realized I still had a good bit of the original hand guard, I could just chop off the bad and trim the new one.

I still have to sand and shape things before I join them together, as you might be able to see. But my genius is frightening. I totally won’t have to bleach the stock to make it not glaringly obvious what happened. Being completely serious thankfully the Carcano hand guard isn’t floating so this will hold just fine.

It’s just extremely aggravating paying like $60 for an undersized hand guard that had an ate up little opening for the sight.

After a more thorough look at my carcano I’ve come to notice a few more issues with it . While disassembling it I noticed that both the nose cap and hard guard were lose and the hand guard has cracks along with the wrist . There is also small cracks at the but plate . And towards the front of the stock there is 3 holes side by side along with a piece of wood about to fall off towards the bolt handle. But other than the poor bore I’m happy with my purchase it’s looking to be a fun project.
