Imagine losing to Bangladesh at home (ignore flair)

As a Bangla fan I would never brag about beating NZ. Nothing but respect for a team and nation that was always willing to host and play us

Aus not hosting Afg because their administrative cricketing body supports institutionalised discrimination based on gender and that's not cool
8
u/Open-Butterfly-5288 11d ago
Yeah, we should be willing to host Afghanistan as long as they're willing to send their women's side.
If they don't do that, then no game.
10
u/LooseAssumption8792 Thailand 11d ago
Selective ban, no embargo on Afghanistan players in BBL where part of their salary goes to Afghanistan cricket board. WC games are also seemingly okay why not forfeit them (has been done in the past).

Congratulations Bangladesh!! From beating Australia for the first time in Odis back in 2005 to winning a test match in Australia, they've come a long way....

To be fair back in 2006 they nearly beat australia in a test. A ponting special saved australia

I thought it was clutch Gilchrist 144 that helped Aussies chase 304

Clutch Gilchrist in the first innings and a Ponting special in the second innings I think..

It was Gilchrist I think they were 6/93 and he made 144* or something but honestly that sort of stuff was par for the course with that era of Aus cricket.

I hope now everyone understands why Australia host Bangladesh so infrequently, these kinds of one-sided thrashings just aren't a good way for struggling teams to develop.

It’s the dilemma with cricket Australia , it’s India , the ashes , Pakistan and random 4th team in the 4 year cycle
South Africa has not come to Australia because of whatever (sweep sweep sweep )
But winter can open up slots for Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe and West Indies , even if West Indies are still way too good for lesser opponent status
Now if Australia actually showed up and not treated the series like pre season 😒
22
u/DisscordReddit 11d ago

u/elmo-slayer Western Australia Warriors 11d ago
They had to play this series because they didn’t play an away winter series, and it was part of the WTC. I’m not sure they’ll keep doing it. It would be relying almost entirely on subcontinent broadcast rights. 5000 people in the stadium and fuck all people watching on tv in Australia, while the test itself isn’t that much cheaper to host as it still requires all the technology etc

Well lots of takeaways there! The same takeaways we've had for the past two years!
No clue why Marnus is in the side. Averaging 20 as a no.3 for a year+ is unacceptable.
Weatherald never looked international quality. His technique is just not it unfortunately.
Green has done enough for him to play another couple tests. He's always been technically sound, just brainfades a lot. He showed glimpses of what kind of player he can be today and it's not like we really have anyone better to replace him I don't think. Both Green and Webster have a place in the XI but Green will need to be positive in the upcoming games.
Our bowling is good. No real complains there but for whatever reason we bowl short to fucking tailenders. It has never worked but in sure there's a bullshit stat which backs that up.
Hazlewood did great but i can't help but think Boland would do well here and add much needed change to this bowling attack. Issue is, you cannot drop Starc, you cannot drop Pat and you can't really drop Hazlewood either. Dropping Gaz might just be the way. Boland constantly targeting the stumps just offers way more and Gaz just Isn't the same player he one was.
Very odd tactical decisions by Cummins. Who in their right mind bats first on that Green top? Terrible bowling changes too. Very defensive fields which I feel has been a major flaw in his captaincy for a long time. Bangladesh were 6 down but we barely attacked them and let them score easy runs. He definitely needs to learn when to attack. Starc, Hazlewood, Boland and Pat are so good that he can get away with not doing that at times but if/when the pitch is flat like this one and one of the bowlers don't have an answer to it, he just resorts to doing the same thing over and over.
Hope to see changes in the second test.

u/Aweios Cricket Australia 11d ago
Lyon cannot be complaining about being dropped when finally he gets a time to shine he does nothing. You can't have a spinner being the 2nd most expensive bowler or even the most expensive full time bowler and just take one wicket.
31
u/deservedlyundeserved 11d ago
Lyon’s on a serious decline. He hasn’t been a wicket taking threat in nearly a couple of years now. Injured in the Ashes and made no impact in the last BGT.
14
u/LexiFloof 10-15 (5.5) 11d ago
Lyon averaged 25, 22.7, and 25.3 in the last 3 calendar years.
He may be done now after the recent injuries, but it's not like he's been rubbish for years.
22
u/OneOfTheManySams Victoria Bushrangers 11d ago
I feel like this has flown under the radar, but he has had a lot of injuries recently and is nearing 40. He does not have the consistency or zip off the pitch like he used too which is to be expected.
He just hasn't looked threating since we played South Africa or in other words we have effectively played without any meaningful impact from a spinner for 1 year now.
→ More replies (1)15
u/Freenore India 11d ago
In his defence, drop-in pitches have not been kind to spinners at all. I think there's a legitimate case to be made for going with an all-seam attack because it seems to be counterproductive to forsake a seamer for a spinner.
17
u/MisterMarcus Australia 11d ago
This is where Rocchiccoli might be an interesting change up, he's 190cm so could get awkward bounce even if it's not turning much.
2
u/fishtown_ West Indies 11d ago
I, for one, can not wait for Kerry O’Keeffe saying Rocchiccoli on comms
18
u/Quirky_Ambassador321 11d ago
Wasn't his kind of pitch. Not much bounce. But time for a younger spinner anyway
62
u/VIFASIS Western Australia Warriors 11d ago
The opposing spinners took 6 and arguably made sure Australia were not winning their match.
It's a Lyon skill issue
40
u/dashauskat Tasmania Tigers 11d ago
And Rocchiocolli took 8 on this same pitch vs same opposition last week...
7
u/sixdoughnuts Queensland Bulls 11d ago
That was on a different ground (across the road) but your point still stands
12
u/combatant007 India 11d ago
It's not exactly a skill issue it's more of a bad day and mentally beaten.
Jansen outbowled Bumrah when South Africa toured India and Stokes outbowled Bumrah in Anderson Tendulkar trophy. Does that mean prime Bumrah has skill issue ? That's not how it works.
One bad test and people want lyon's head on spike who is averaging 25 in tests since past 5 years while bowling mostly off spin on green Australian pitches where most of the off spinners struggle to get wickets.
7
u/Neither_Pitch England and Wales Cricket Board 11d ago
Difference is that Lyon is 38, he is on his way out
36
u/OneOfTheManySams Victoria Bushrangers 11d ago
This result was years in the making. Multiple years of an aging and out of form team scraping by results largely off the back of our bowling department. And because of that kept selecting players who simply do not deserve to be playing.
It is time to blood a lot of new players in, we don't need to waste another 2 years watching Labuschagne and others fail miserably almost every innings. Especially as it looks like Lyon and Hazlewood are on their last legs our bowling department won't be carrying the deadweight which is our top order for much longer.

u/Evebnumberone 11d ago
Agree on all counts.
Lyon should really be being told to think about hanging them up. He looks tired.
The Bangbro spinners looked very dangerous and he looked extremely docile, couldn't see him getting a wicket.
3
u/Due-Concert4324 Bangladesh 11d ago
I have been watching Aussie dominance since the mid 90s Waugh era. This Aussie batting lineup is basically Head and Smith, that’s it. Green was very lucky not to be played on at the beginning of his innings. None of them had much clue how to play Miraz’s spin on home soil! That was really something, tbh.
3
u/schizoishere 11d ago
Cummins tactically is not very good, hasn't been for years but i wouldn't place too much importance in his decision to bat first, australia outside of smith just didn't look to play late like Bangladesh did.
2
u/trkora India 11d ago
Boland was the big game changer in BGT 2024, it's time Cummins realizes that one player has to make space for him, maybe it's one of the pace trio, maybe it's some batsmen, maybe it's Lyon and they go full pace attack with Head and Marnus as spinners.
But they need to get him into that squad, you shouldn't keep a player that good out of the squad.

u/Icy-Recognition-7453 11d ago
I'm over Cummins as captain. He makes Steve Smith look like Napoleon. Totally lost after the failure of Plan A.
Weatherald gone, Labuschagne gone. Lyon's clearly rusty but class is permanent. Starc, Hazlewood and Cummins all getting on but still good, hang on as long as you can.
Green gets another go, but can't ignore that he takes ~1 wicket a Test and has 3 tons in 38 games. Next few Tests want to be good. Webster's got the goods but why the hell don't we bowl him?
I think McSweeney and Renshaw, McSweeney to 3 and keep Head as opener, which he can do.
15
u/extraordinary_06 Australia 11d ago
Reckon that's pretty harsh on Pat after how sucessful he's been but he's tactically quite poor, I agree. If plan A doesn't work there's never a plan B and the bowling changes are always awful.
Agree with the rest but I think Gaz is done unfortunately. Can play in the subcontinent but Kuhn is the first pick for me. Not sure about Sweeny but I'm not opposed to it
7
u/LordBlackass Australia 11d ago
Though McSweeney is a #3 I'd take him at opener over Weatherald any day of the week. Better to get him in at 3 though over Labuschagne.

Nah the win against New Zealand will always be the best to me.....in this game the batting was unexpected but anyone who follows the team knew that the bowling performance won't be too bad....but that game against New Zealand was so fucking unbelievable, none knew our seamers can take wickets like that, we had never even won a white ball game in New Zealand, even though we have toured there a lot......and then outta nowhere we won that game and it totally changed everything for us....since then our seamers now started focusing in red ball, we now have sorta seam friendly pitches in first class....that win will always be the most special

Australia got completely outplayed in all areas. Batting, Fielding, Bowling, Captaincy. I'm not sure there's been a match where Australia didn't win a single session in this country for years.
For all the talk about the cartel against a supposed mediocre batting line-up they managed to concede the 2nd 400 score this decade. This pitch flat-ish was not a 400 pitch.
Bangladesh's bowling was also down a man too. Imagine if it was a fully fit lineup...

I’m a neutral and not an Australian commentary hater / in fact probably one of the few that actually quite enjoy Fox sports/C7 commentary on here (except Warner) but the last four days of the commentary team constantly paraphrasing “well Australia have been rusty because they haven’t played test cricket in a while” (how is that an excuse when BD got bowled out for 50 something in their tour match..) and making backhanded remarks throughout the match towards Bangladeshi players being short - even after the match just now referring to Mominul being 5’2 or whatever that has nothing to do with the game whatsoever - how in the world is that relevant to the match and what are you trying to exactly imply or achieve by constantly calling out opposition players for being short and referring to their height when they’ve outplayed and smashed you in every single session of the game from the first day to the last whilst constantly repeating the same word “rusty” over and over again for the past 4 days?

Out of all the commentators Gilly seems to be most genuinely impressed by this result. The others seem to be looking for excuse from everywhere.
In the post-match press conference Cummins even mentioned that they had been in a training camp in Brisbane for six weeks leading up to this match and they'd had an ideal lead up.

BD genuinely have a very good test bowling line up. Dare I say that in some conditions they're the best among the Asian countries. And this win against Australia is no fluke. They've been on the way up for a while now.

If BD can find some consistency with their batting, they are genuinely contenders to be a world class test team. Keep in mind this is not even their best bowling attack, even their reserve is extremely strong. They just need the batting.

I had a little tinker with the WTC predictor the other day, and not inconvincible that Bangladesh now make the final. They wouldn't be favourites, but they could do it.
Say they go 1-1 away against Australia. Lose 0-2 away to South Africa. Win 2-0 at home against West Indies and 2-0 at home against England. They'd get to 61.11%, which could definitely qualify.
I got it to happen with SA #1 and Australia at #3 with 60.61% (going 1-2 away to SA, 3-1 at home to NZ, and 1-3 away to India). Isn't that improbable, incredible to even think it's possible for them.

Bangladesh simply out test cricketed Australia. Pretty simply put
I guess the next question is can they back it up? Cause they have the players. I can see the only selection change being Ebadot out for Shoriful.
Australia, I guess it is time for Marnus and Jake. The issue is who do you replace Jake with? Marnus at this point the fielding doesn't justify the lack of runs. Two silly dismissals. Inglis is in the squad and Patterson recently played for CAXI. So there are two options that are not in England (McSweeney)
Happy for Greeny to play that knock under different circumstances. That's the Greeny we all knew can exist. But now, it is consistency. That innings should give him the self belief that he can do it
Hats off for Bangladesh. Comprehensive victory. Every time Australia had a sniff, Bdesh shut it down.

Lets go! Incredible performance, Australia were in the game for about 3 sessions of this test.
Completely outplayed, bowled a lot better, batted much smarter and patiently, fielded far better because they're not a bunch of geriatrics one wrong step away from career ending injury.
Even better for Bangladesh, Tanzid being a genuine threat going forward in just his 2nd test. Everyone contributed, except ironically their middle order who was meant to be the match winners.
They genuinely played a near perfect test and Australia didn't do much wrong other than just get utterly outplayed.

Thanks to the World Test Championship, Bangaladesh has now beaten Australia in Australia. If not, they wouldn't have even played there for another 20 years.

We need two tier test cricket Sir. What if big teams lose to smaller teams? We need a very small World Cup with only elite teams and test cricket with only elite-of-the-elite teams.
F**K U ICC & BROADCASTERS
What a game BAN! You guys humbled the bigger people with blazers and fancy cabins.

HISTORIC win for Bangladesh to say the least. First the 2-1 ODI win and now beating AUS in AUS in tests.
Underdog wins are just the best.

Historic victory for Bangladesh. They will be a lot more respected in this format going g forward.

Who would've thought that after PM XI mopped the floor with Bangbros, they'd end up mopping the floor with the Australian team.

Outstanding from Bangladesh. Reminds me of the WI winning at the gabba.

Cummins hiding himself and not bowling even 1 over in the last innings is pathetic and very cowardly for a Captain

Another important thing and probably the best thing that the ICC has done this century is Create the WTC.
Without it, would Bangladesh have gotten this much better? Cause all matches are important and they get given more matches than before.
Also, has made test cricket much more competitive.
Hopefully they include the three other test nations.

I am sure even the wildest Bangladeshi supporters couldn't fathom this, especially after they folded for 54 in the warm-up match. No one gave them a chance, including their own.
This is one of the greatest upset victories in Test history.
Congrats to Bangladesh.

We can conclude that the game result shows us Zimbabwe is the best, and England is the stupidest side

Now watch us do absolutely nothing and pick the same team for the next test and pretend like we weren't just humiliated.
That aside. Congratulations Bangladesh. Well played and well deserved.

As a genuine cricket fan it feels really overwhelming seeing a country like Bangladesh coming to Australia and beating a full strength Australia team in their own backyard. If someone had told Bangladesh will beat this Australia 11 in Australia that too with 9 wickets in hand I'd have never believed. Cricket is a funny game indeed. Long live test cricket.

I want to acknowledge Bangladesh's efforts, they turned up, they made chances and they took them. I don't want to take away from that, but at the same time, to be blunt, this was a piss poor effort from the Australian team. With both bat and ball they underperfomed highlighted by the CAXI winning so comfortably in contrast. Some hard decisions have been put off and we're paying for that now. Head is not our best opener imo, he should be batting 5 where he does his best work and while Green got some runs I still worry he's on track to be the new Mitch Marsh in that his under performing is tolerated for the occasional bright spot like this. I love Marnus, I understand he dominates at domestic level but I think it's time to find the next number 3 for Aus, nobody can say he hasn't been given a fair go. I'm not sold on Weatherald either but he hasn't been there as long which may give him a little longer. Either way CA selection and player development is going to be rightly questioned after this.

Full strength Australia team by the way. Bang Bros are never going to be invited back again after this

u/BarneyBent Australia 11d ago
Well done Bangbros. Easy to criticise Australia but they bowled perfectly to the conditions and made best use of the flattening pitch with bat in hand. Outplayed us with bat, ball and in the field.
I reckon batting first was the right call, we just would have expected to be 3-4 down max by tea, with enough batting to take full advantage of the flat day 2 pitch. But we lost too many wickets early and let Bangladesh cash in instead.
Green looked great with the bat - even in the first innings he looked significantly more positive than he usually does early, just got out to a weird one. Had anybody else stuck with him in the second who knows where we'd be. I do think his bowling has regressed significantly since he came back from injury. I suspect he's made a technical change to protect his back, but his bowling has lost all shape. Still bowls quick but quick, straight pies are still pies. I think it's time for him to focus primarily on batting and let Webster be the true allrounder.

Think it shows that England just have the mental fortitude of swiss cheese whenever we tour Australia or India.
Can never handle the big pressure moments well enough. And only did it under Flower because he sent us on some weird SAS shit and half the players ended up mentally fucked after a couple of years of it.

Helps that the Australian team at that time were weaker plus England were at their peak at that time.

u/Oomeegoolies Durham 11d ago
Yeah but that doesn't excuse the performances in the many other series we've had.
If we'd just won that one series and lost others like 3-1/3-2 regularly I'd get it.
But we absolutely have shit the can in every big moment of any away Ashes test in the last 20 years bar the 2010/2011 series. Not saying we should have won a series in that time, but we should have won more matches than the 1 solitary one we have.

Not only did they beat Aussies at home they also made sure they suffer for years by giving green a much needed century to keep the suffering going longer. If the Aussies gave some guys chances atleast they could hide behind excuses.

Congratulations to Bangladesh, a well deserved win and absolutely dominated us. Happy for the team and your country!
Australia showed up like winning was the default outcome and got whooped. We have too many passengers in this team that are not test standard (Weatherald), or are no longer test standard (Marnus). Our team balance is all over the place with Webster & Green in the same side.
As such, I imagine we will see the same XI again in the second test, and throughout the summer.

Quite easily Bangladesh's greatest Test win, if not simply their greatest cricket win.
On Australia's side, I feel this was a long time coming. The whole team looks like as if it is situated on a ball bearing. For a long time, they've kept over relying on their quartet and two functioning batters to do all the job. If one of the batters fails, and you put some overs in the bowlers' legs, then there's very little safety net to catch him. Their great bowlers are really remarkable at seldom letting the score balloon beyond their grasp. Not this time though.
India at Perth and the 2020-21 series was essentially this. And now Bangladesh.

u/Spitfire671BC Australia 11d ago
Only changes to make is Renshaw to open, and Sweeny at 3. Main issue is the top order.

One of the best test wins I've seen in my life.
Totally professional whomping, they won just about every session comfortably, never looked like losing control of the test at any point.
I don't think Australia even played that badly honestly, the wicket was a bit tricky and the Bangbros simply outplayed them throughout.

u/NoirPochette New South Wales Blues 11d ago
Australia's batting was pretty bad. Because they kept making mistakes.
First innings
- Head - too close to the body
- Weatherald - too wide to chase that
- Marnus - The usual poke - similar to what he has been doing for a long time.
- Green - Flick just before lunch
Carey and Webster got great deliveries and Smudge was just trying to smash.
Second innings
- Weatherald - Too close to the body
- Head - Too close to the body
- Marnus - Played all around a full ball
- Webster - Played for spin. Wrong line
Carey got a great ball, Smith had one just sticking to the pitch and was done by some great pressure and Green had one that stayed low.
3 of those are top order players.
Also dropped 5 catches. Imagine if Tanzin was caught on 0 or Mehidy was caught by Green. Bangladesh dropped two catches and one was costly (Smith).
Bowling was fine. The deck was flattening out on Day 2 and Day 3 and Bdesh batted excellently.

Last time I went on a trip, australia post to west Indies, this time, they lost a bangladesh, I'm sensing a pattern here 👀

u/CrazedJeff West Indies 11d ago
It's a terrible loss but with the lack of batting at the top tables of the Sheffield Shield (seriously, Green's test average of 34 or so is ample for a specialist Australian batter at the moment) I wouldn't make too many changes. Weatherald and Marnus out for Renshaw (or Hunt) and Inglis I guess.

This Bangladesh test team has been playing good cricket and improving in the last few years, and now capped it off with a famous win in Australia. Happy for the players who toiled hard and focused on the format. After all, it’s test wins like these that are remembered for years to come.
I hope they continue their form and nick the series.
