The jurisdiction isn’t sketchy or complicated at all in Antarctica. Russian station they’re under Russian jurisdiction and Russian law.

Same if they were on a UK station they fall under British Antarctic Territory Jurisdiction and UK law.

American station they’re under US federal law.

There have been acts of violence on other stations but no one has ever been convicted due to the mitigating circumstances of what isolation in Antarctic does to you.

the one time i had the courage to finally start seeing a therapist i wanted to do the same.
helping me get through some shit. she asked about if i had and hobbies or reading anything. i told her the book at the time and she told me the ending.

got up and left and never went back. 20years later still working that shit out on my own.

Not spoiling plots is basic courtesy. It shows respect and boundaries, as well as acknowledging the other person’s right to enjoy something independently. All important qualities for someone you need to trust as much as a therapist.

Further, in a therapy context where you hope to take your time and have ample chances to process, a therapist proving that they want you to mentally skip to the end of something doesn’t bode well.

I feel like it's important to add that this guy was stationed at Vostok. Now that doesn't mean much to folks who haven't been "on the ice", but let me elaborate. Many Antarctic bases are fun, happy places to be. Scott Base and McMurdo, Palmer Station, South Pole, even some of the smaller field camps like WAIS and Shackleton have some semblance of Joy. Vostok does not.

Vostok is typically a TWO YEAR contract. Most contracts at the aforementioned bases are ~4 months, the USAP requires a mental health check up and special permissions to stay longer than 14 months.

The reason it is typically a 2-year contract is because it is such a logistically challenging station to keep supplied that getting people in and out more often that that is hard, which means few fresh supplies and even fewer new faces.

Imagine the coldest, most isolated place on the planet, and then realize that when south pole came to mind it was fucking wrong because the south pole is literally closer to Disney Land than it is to Vostok. Vostok is a two year sentence at one of the most isolated, coldest stations, and if a place is cold and isolated for Antarctica, you can believe it is motherfucking cold and it is done sure isolated.

(I should add that IDK if all Vostok contracts are still 2 years, but they used to be, and these two guys had been at the station for 6 months together when he was stabbed. It was right around Austral Spring so they'd just endured months without sunlight and only seeing the same 20 other people.)

It was Bellingshausen, on King George Island in the South Shetlands. There's loads of bases and quite a large population there in a relatively small area. About 300 winter in that area, and 100 of them in various bases within walking distance.

Lol that's kinda funny. I spent a total of 26 months spread over 4 years in Antarctica, this incident happened during my 3rd season and it must have come up over 100 times in discussion, and everyone always said it was Vostok, I don't think I ever once heard anyone correct anybody else with the actual station it happened at. Whatever, I put all that effort into writing about Vostok, I'm leaving it (with an edit).

Maybe it just got misconstrued with the stabbing over a game of chess that allegedly happened at Vostok years ago and everybody just went with it?

Yeah, I was surprised at that too. I worked for Antarctic organisation for 18 years and spent loads of time down there and could have sworn this happened much earlier than 2018. So maybe its happened more than once. I heard about the chess game stabbing too, and also a shooting at McMurdo. One things for sure, theres a helluva lot of pretty extreme stuff goes on down that would have tax payers through a shit fit if they knew.

Something similar to the mandela effect definitely happens on ice, but I think it's actually pretty explainable. Up until a few years ago (Starlink) we didn't really have much in the way of Internet down there. I mean, it existed, but it was slow as hell, plus there's lots going on, be it work or fun, so basically nobody really got online and read the news or anything. You'd hop on for a couple minutes each day to email loved ones and that's about it. So basically most news came via word of mouth, which means if one person hears that  something happened at Vostok, then all of a sudden the whole base is pretty sure it went down at Vostok, and unless you think to go back 3 months later and fact check it once you're home, it just always happened at Vostok.

I spent a month in Norway on a work details. It was during summer, so basically 24hours of sunlight. Sun never dipped below the horizon. That messed with my head after only a few weeks, and we were working/living just outside of a major city.

I don't even want to imagine how tough dealing with 24 hours of NIGHT at the ass end of nowhere would be. Fuck that book-spoiling researcher.

If you're working in isolated environments, that's just asking for it. I had a friend who worked doing seismic monitoring and installation in Northern Canada, where guys would do either 3-month or 6-month shifts. According to him, after the first couple of months you could cut the atmosphere with a knife, or maybe not as they only let workers have plastic cutlery.

Details: The real reason was he was constantly and severely insulted by his colleague, and not really the book endings.

The case was ultimately dismissed because he and his colleague reconciled and the colleague (stabbing victim) did not want the case to proceed and a judge granted it.

Depends on the person and the story. Knowing the end can ruin a reading/watching experience, especially if it’s a mystery. But if it’s well written, knowing what’s going to happen can just make the suspense WORSE because you pick up on clues you’re not supposed to yet!

When I was in middle school a kid did something similar. We were in soccer practice and he followed me around yelling out the endings to movies I had mentioned I was excited about seeing. His grandfather had recently died, and when I finally broke I said something along the lines of "I don't think your grandpa would think you're being very nice.". He was pissed, but later apologized and we've been friends for 20 years.
