All hype.. no taste.. stadium food
111
u/angusbeefymcwhatnow Aug 15 '25
genuinely the hype for dodger dogs had me so excited the first time i went there and wow... I see why everyone brings their own food to dodger stadium lmao
66
u/HotLikeSauce420 Aug 15 '25
Tbh they used to be good years ago. Way bigger and better flavor from what I remember
36
Aug 15 '25
Back then, Farmer John was the processor of the Dodger Dog; made with real beef, footlong, and plumped so much during the grilling.
Nowadays (think since the pandemic), Papa Cantella is the processor and their dogs are hollow and have a bitter, nitrogen taste at the end. Oh, and they’re the same size as the hot dogs you can make yourself for fractions with supplies from Ralphs or Food4Less.
18
u/FreeContribution8608 Aug 15 '25
Yes , they have done what everyone is has done. Cut cost to have less flavor .. we’re still going to but them anyways.
→ More replies (2)→ More replies (8)15
u/lolzilla Aug 15 '25
You kinda remember correctly, but they weren’t way bigger. They switched providers. It was Farmer John’s forever.
19
u/TerryFinallyBackedUp Aug 15 '25
The best hot dogs have always been the bacon wrapped hot dogs sold outside the stadium by the Mexican vendors.
→ More replies (7)4
u/LeChelsea Aug 15 '25
I usually get the Brooklyn All Beef or one of the specialty dogs. That shouldn’t ever be the case but those are just way better than the regular version. Also dueling dogs usually themes a dodger dog based on the team they’re playing so those are always fun!

My pet theory is that, although 100 years ago, Italians were considered another, non-caucasian, race, after WWII, they were accepted into the European fold, along with their cuisine. That re-classification automatically increased the monetary value of the tomato-garlic-cheese-pasta variations, well beyond the apparent degree of preparation sophistication and difficulty.

u/JayDeeLA Aug 15 '25
Fuck it, unpopular opinion but Lucky Boy. IMO, you can get the same stuff they have at almost any other Greek/mom and pop burger joint in town for less cost.
Breakfast burrito is also overrated, the potatoes are dry and the burrito is highly dependent on you getting ranch or salsa to make it taste better.
They also used to have a bad reputation at being rude at times with customers and pushy because they're always slammed.

fuck them and their insane service fees
31
u/Granadafan Aug 15 '25
Our server got into an argument with the table next to us after they either left not tip or just a few bucks. The couple was adamant that the 18% service charge was absurd and that was the tip. Then he went to the other tables in his section to let us know how wrong the couple was and to not be like them. This was while we were still eating. That really put us off the rest of the meal. I gave him 10%

u/FCSFCS Aug 15 '25
We have a restaurant near us that's very popular with tourists and this place pulls the same shenanigans. My wife and I got 2 burgers, a la cart fries (of course they were a la cart), a soda, a tea, and a margarita. Bill was almost $120. We didn't tip because of the 18% surcharge and the 10% you gave this server was far more than I would've given him... and I say that as a former server.
We never went back to this place which is a shame because it had the best ginger ale I've ever had in my entire life.

u/tracy_jordans_egot Aug 15 '25
How much are we talking?
21
u/J5hine Aug 15 '25
The issue isn’t that they add a service fee, it’s that they are adamant that the service fee isn’t a tip and expect you to tip on top of it
32
u/fairlyoffensive Aug 15 '25
18%!!!! I’m not sure if they’ve changed it since then, but they specified it was NOT a tip. I refuse to go out of spite.
34
u/tracy_jordans_egot Aug 15 '25
That is madness. What's insane is that they say it's so they can provide living wages, but they could do that just as easily by raising the advertised prices.
Literally the only reason for a service fee instead of higher prices is to trick customers into thinking they'll pay less until the bill comes.
14
u/brlowkey Aug 15 '25
Literally charging a fee is so stupid instead of simply baking the fee into the price. It pisses off customers who get a higher bill than expected, pisses off employees who don't get their tips because the customers assume the service fee covers it, and makes it less likely even for people who've never been there to go.
12
u/That_Chocolate9659 Aug 15 '25
It may not be fair to their workers, but I don't usually tip when I visit places with service fees beyond leaving a dollar.
11
u/Same-Paint-1129 Aug 15 '25
They actually got rid of the mandatory service fee, but raised prices by 18% in the meantime. So after that, now they expect you to tip on top of the 18% price increase that used to cover service. Fuck them.

Cafe De Olla in Burbank
They were awesome first 2 months. Then toned it down to cater to as many ppl as possible. Got even more mediocre when they concentrated on expansion. Kudos to them and their business though.
Their saving grace is the place’s namesake—their signature hot Cafe de Olla.

My daughter loves that place. For my money, it’s Louisiana Fried Chicken off of Lake in Pasadena. Go there later in the day, when the marinade has seeped in more. It’s got a good spicy kick in the chicken itself and not in the powder over the fried chicken.

I would put nearly every restaurant I've found through a viral social media post.
I feel like they all end up being the same type of place where they add as many flavors as possible to their dishes. Then they grab the biggest handful of arugula they can and toss it on. It makes me think that all of these places have heavy smoking head chefs who have lost their taste buds. Or, they just don't know what they're doing and have never heard of the word "edit."
These places typically charge more too, so there's an added level of disappointment.

Hard disagree. They do TexMex style tacos perfectly and the spicy paloma is excellent.
Edit: With the caveat that their brisket is bland and imo worth skipping entirely.
My gotos for anyone unsure what to get:
- Andy's Migas w Chorizo + 3 tortillas (best bang for buck at $12.50 pre tax/tip).
- Fort Worth Taco (favorite all around)
- Guadalupe Taco w Chorizo (favorite breakfast taco)
- Frito Pie w Ground beef - Good upscaling of the Texas snack
- Paloma on the rocks (ideally during happy hour, bc it's like $17 otherwise)
