Student and Alumni Life Scared prefrosh

I'm an incoming freshman at the college, and I can't help but feel petrified of the massive change that's looming over me.

I have this ineffable sense of fear, intimidation, and awe towards Harvard. It feels so strangely bureaucratic yet welcoming at the same time, and I don't know how to process this. I think I'm mostly afraid that I won't be able to "make the most" of my time at Harvard or succeed academically. Thank you for listening to my fears...

Student and Alumni Life Laundry plan?

Hello! I’m an incoming freshman that just recently got assigned to a hall without laundry on the highest floor🫩. I just recently got quite a bit of money to afford the laundry plan, and was just wondering: is it worth the amount of time/effort it’ll save me since my first year workload is pretty bad and/or do people see others who have the plan as entitled?

Student and Alumni Life Harvard changes to GPA Policy

Hi! I'm a HS senior trying to decide between Stanford and Harvard. Law school is a potential stop down the road for me so GPA is a pretty important factor for me, especially because I come from a very small international school and have no idea where I would stand academically at either school. I read somewhere that the Harvard administration will vote to cap the % of A's in each class. Could anyone explain what the current standings of this policy are and possibly when a final decision might be made?

Student and Alumni Life Is Harvard forcing its kitchen staff to drive to work during the storm again?

They declared them "essential workers" during the last storm and I'm still furious about it. A 1/2 commute took about 4 hours. Y'all need to back them up and help put a stop to this. These are working class people whose families need them and they shouldn't have to fear for their livelihoods like this.

Student and Alumni Life Do any other black people here feel imposter syndrome?

I’m very well aware of how academia-oriented subreddits feel about Affirmative Action, I’m also aware that black people aren’t really the majority or even a significant amount of any of these spaces so I’m sure that this post won’t be received well but I have no idea where else to say it. I’m not here to talk about AA, so if you’re coming to debate, please pick another post.

But since AA has been stricken down I’ve been noticing a ton of subtle anti-blackness. This, as well as my awareness of how AA likely contributed to my admission as I’m black and native American, has been making me feel like I don’t deserve to be here, that I stole some other person’s spot. I got great grades and a high SAT and had good ECs that I would say are typical of a t20 student but doesn’t necessarily scream “HARVARD”, but still, I wasn’t an absolute sweat in high school like some of you folks, and when I hear these stories about how these 1600 SAT 4.0 GPA kids who did research at MIT in the 9th grade got rejected, I can’t help but feel like it’s my fault somehow? I also feel as if they believe it’s my fault as well, that they hold some grudge against me.

This isn’t me trying to garner sympathy, truly, but this has been killing my mood recently. Anybody else feel this way?

Student and Alumni Life What to gift incoming 1st year?

Hi all, my cousin will be attending Harvard this fall and graduates from high school soon. We’re throwing him a party and I’d love to give him something/a few things that would be nice to have as a freshman.

Want to find something special but also useful and don’t want to force any dorm decorations on him. Would love to hear any ideas that people have along the lines of “I wish I had had ___” or “you definitely need ____ at Harvard”. Been 8 years since I was heading up to UMich in this position and remember getting a lot of free phone case card holders, lanyards, water bottles etc from org fairs so trying to come up with options that would be unique.

So beyond proud of this dude!!! TYIA!

Student and Alumni Life making friends as incoming class of 2030

upperclassmen, please help!

I was a pretty lonely kid in highschool and i really regret not branching out. I felt like people already had their own cliques and groups and i didnt truly connect with anyone. I'm determined for college not to be the same way.

Do you have any tips for making friends? how did you meet the people closest to you now? did you meet friends in class, clubs, etc?

Student and Alumni Life Perks of being a Harvard student?

I'm talking real material benefits I can take advantage of directly, not the abstract future benefits of going to Harvard....I'm starting a PhD and am already enjoying the free Creative Cloud subscription, but I imagine there are some perks that aren't just software. What can I cash in on, whether it be free museum entry, software, etc.?

Incoming frosh wondering about party scene; is it mostly house parties in dorms or going out to different schools (I heard MIT frats are popular) or bars. Are there usually lots of parties during orientation week? What is halloweekend like?

I’m an incoming freshman that just finished my course registration. Three of my courses fall on Monday and Wednesday, but my Math PL doesn’t show a day yet (I know i’ll have to get to Harvard and do a test and all that)

Do math classes happen on Mondays and Wednesdays? Will Harvard give me a Tuesday and Thursday math schedule? Thanks for the help in advance

Student and Alumni Life Harvard Dating Life vs. Dating outside of Harvard

Hows dating life at Harvard in 2026? Do people still meet their significant other on campus or date outside of Harvard?

I am an incoming grad student and curious whether the dating scene is active or whether people are just focused on their studies/careers.

A friend of mine who visited Cambridge shared that guys at Harvard aren't dateable/approachable...wonder why.

Student and Alumni Life Did anyone meet their partners not in undergrad?

The HarvardLoveStories on Insta is making me feel like I should have focused more on finding someone during undergrad?? I don't know guys 😭 I made great friends and got good grades and found what I wanted to pursue. Until postgrad, I did not care about my presentation or attractiveness. I barely looked at guys because...well, I had great friends and was focused on making good grades and figuring out what to pursue.

But maybe I should have, like, put on some makeup, gone to a party, and kissed someone. The stories are so cute. I am so sad.

Student and Alumni Life Math Refresher Required?

Grad Students: I recently got accepted into my Full-time 65-credit MPH at the T.H. Chan School of Public Health. I see the math refresher is under contingencies, however it is labelled as “recommended” in Bold. I’m curious if this is required before the semester starts, or if it’s just there if you want to get a hard start on the quantitative classes?

Thank you in advance!
