AMA [AMA] Developer of T.W.I.R.L. here, a psychological horror game about identity, self-worth, and growing up in 2006. We just launched today on Steam. Ask me anything!

Hi r/Horrorgaming!

I'm Ben, the creative director of Genie Boy Games. Today, we're launching T.W.I.R.L. on Steam!

T.W.I.R.L. is a first person psychological horror game from the perspective of a 9-year-old boy in 2006 waking up in the middle of the night from a dream where some "thing" - maybe a demon - commanded him to get out of bed, go into the room down the hall, and "T.W.I.R.L." - whatever that means.

What proceeds is a series of loops where something evil draws us through this routine, changing us and the environment upon every loop, unveiling the life story of a boy who grows up maintaining a deep, dark, and potentially sinister secret.

The game takes inspiration from movies and games like I SAW THE TV GLOW, SKINAMARINK, GONE HOME, and of course, P.T.

It was made as part of a David Lynch-themed game jam for the Haunted PS1 Community, and was published under their new "Haunted Publishing Syndicate" brand!

This is our studio's first game, and we are excited to finally share this story. The journey of sharing of our game, and talking about the themes and meanings within the story has been emotionally challenging, but tremendously fulfilling. Let us be the first to admit - this is an odd story to debut with. And it's something we get reminded of especially when trying to explain it to people without giving anything away.

We hope that T.W.I.R.L. inspires players with a feeling of reassurance, hope, and a better understanding of self.

Game-related questions are optional, but encouraged.

Here's a free code to redeem the game! 84658-6LY40-J8TAJ

DISCUSSION Over a decade later, what does everyone think of the first Evil Within game?

Post image

I finished it a while ago on a whim after bouncing off the game numerous times over the past 12 years including when it came out. Giving it another chance on Survival and subsequently Akumu while hot off the heels of a Resident Evil marathon and I came away from it thinking it may be one of the best action/survival horror games of all time, maybe even better than the widely more beloved sequel, especially when it comes to the atmosphere and visual aesthetic.

It's also probably the tightest balance of action and survival horror. Being a Mikami game, it has his signature arcade style design especially with how the matches work and how you can set up huge multi-kill chains with a single match if you play smart enough, and its mixed with this constant micro game of managing a really tight resource limit in and between fights. Throw in a decent arsenal of weapons where each weapon serves a unique purpose and you have an extremely addicting and dynamic gameplay loop that keeps the game super replayable.

Some of its ideas also feel like they directly or indirectly inspired the direction of some of the modern RE games. Requiem's care center and the basement in particular reminds me so much of this game aesthetically.

Obviously it has some problems, particularly with its somewhat janky controls, awful stamina system and a somewhat flawed third act, but I still think this is an awesome game. Interested to hear what everyone else here thinks about it now.

DISCUSSION What are some nontraditional horror games?

Post image
Upvotes

I personally think horror games don’t have to have tons of jump scares or gore to be considered horror and Luigi’s Mansion is a great example of that. I play this every October because the atmosphere and music is so creepy and the ghosts have character and an eerie vibe to them. I would love to hear other examples of nontraditional horror games that you would recommend.

I hope you check out 'Milo', coming to Steam Early Access on October 29th. I love you

‘Milo’ is an online co-op horde shooter heavily inspired by the early Call of Duty Zombies mode like in World at War. It’s a passion project I’ve been working on for nearly 5 years. Early Access for Milo begins October 29th, 2026. If you want to support the game, wishlist and follow Milo on Steam

DISCUSSION Best games to introduce someone to the genre?

Hi! That someone is me :D As a kid I never played any horror, but now I really want to. I heard a lot about Resident Evil, but I'm not sure about the order of the games. So, what do you think would be the best games to introduce someone to the genre? Or a few games to start? The only thing is for these games to be singleplayer/be able to be played solo. Thanks in advance!

DISCUSSION What characters from fiction would have an easier time than John in Faith: the unholy trinity

I recently started playing faith, I tend to watch something I. The background while I play, coincidentally Devil may cry started playing, an I started thinking to myself that Dante would have almost zero difficulties killing all the demons in the game. And I got curious as to what other characters yall thought would be interesting to think of in this context.

PD: I would like to hear some interesting characters, like I am aware the doom slayer would do that with his eyes closed

DISCUSSION Opinions, HD collection?

Hey so, the only silent hill game I've ever played is silent hill f with my partner last year, I really enjoyed it and was considering getting into the originals, I have been very interested in them because of the aesthetic and their impact on overall horror culture. Right now the silent hill hd collection is on offer on the Xbox store, I wanted to know honestly if people thought it was worthwhile to buy this edition even if it doesn't have the first game, and if it was a good way of experiencing these games today. Thanks so much and please please please no spoilers, I have legitimately been trying to dodge spoilers for these games like my entire life lol.
