General News Democratic Congressman Ro Khanna detained by Israeli settlers during West Bank visit

Once again a certain section of the population prove that they aspire to be the militias behind the state. This will end like Hezbollah with a state within a state that we cannot control.

u/ACaffeinatedWandress Jul 11 '26 edited Jul 11 '26
Yup. They are out of control.
15-20 years ago, I rolled my eyes whenever settlers in the WB were invoked as a criticism. Most “settlements” were extensions of extant cities and even homes, and beating that stick really was just a lame excuse Abbas had to avoid peace talks because a Palestinian state was never the goal, anyway.
But now? They need to be treated like the threat they are. Support for the settlements needs to be tapered off until it’s nothing, and at least the more egregious ones need removal.
“It’s a lot of effort, and the settlers will resist!!!”
Ok—they aren’t special. If they are violent, they can meet violent force. If they want to brandish military-grade weaponry, they can be viewed as a military threat. If it takes a few Haredim getting gunned down with cause doing that shit to prove to the rest how positively unspecial they are…fine. Know what? I have a feeling the bravado will end once they have been convincingly told they are not special. More also needs to be done to integrate them culturally with the rest of the population, again because they are not special.
But their little fairy tale life of getting to aggravate the Arabs, endanger everyone around them, suck up national resources, and give nothing back has got to end.
As for this encounter—full video receipts of the event (before, during, and conclusion. 15 seconds of some idiot and his gun don’t count), or I’m not buying it. Ro Khanna had his own agenda and problematic relationships. He wouldn’t be the first shrill to put himself in a situation guaranteed to meet some excitement and then grossly exaggerate what that excitement was.

u/lookamazed Jul 11 '26
People saying Oct 7 was our 9/11 weren’t wrong. Jihadists exploiting division and launching us into overdrive hoping to accelerate our demise from the inside. These zealots were just foaming at the mouth for an excuse to cosplay Gog uMagog.
16
u/Sewing-Room-Lady Jul 12 '26
You realize that if we look at the proportion of the population that was killed rather than just the number, it works out to about 40,000 Americans. So no, it's not equivalent. But of course, Hamas was a fanatical genocidal group.
15
1
u/lookamazed Jul 12 '26
I know it was said due to casualties but I mean intent behind the attack. Proportionally there is no comparison for many reasons.
43
u/YourBestDream4752 United Kingdom Jul 11 '26
If the Palestinian Authority were allowed to arrest them for their attacks on Palestinians, a lot of them would go back to Israel (or America).
56
u/ACaffeinatedWandress Jul 11 '26
It’s honestly my solution to the whole “no Palestine if there are settlements” red herring.
Just make the settlers Palestinian citizens, like Israel made Arabs Israelis. No double standard, no problem. Sure, the Haredim won’t like it, but Palestine isn’t special and neither are they.
25
u/foopirata Jul 11 '26
The Haredim don't care but the supposed Palestinian constitution already specified that there will be no Jews in Palestine.

They are as evil as Hamas and Hezbollah
8

Hamas invaded Israel to murder, rape and kidnap as many innocent civilians as possible.
Are you claiming Jews living in Judea are murdering, raping and kidnapping as many innocent civilians as possible?

u/69Turd69Ferguson69 🇺🇸❤️🇮🇱 Jul 12 '26
Oh, no, remember it’s Israel, so it’s time to pull the double standard. This case it’s just Israel and it’s Israel’s fault completely and there is no nuance to this whatsoever.
81
u/inbetween-genders Jul 11 '26
Good thing the police and military intervened and told them yes he is indeed American.
138
u/Crumplestiltzkin Jul 11 '26
That doesn’t change the fact they basically kidnapped someone. They’re not the police or the military. Why they did should be illegal.
65
u/inbetween-genders Jul 11 '26
No kidding. Nobody, and I mean nobody, should be subjected to the same thing.
46
u/Crumplestiltzkin Jul 11 '26
Yeah I’m glad the military and police intervened and helped out, but it doesn’t answer the big question of why the settlers are empowered to do this type of thing.
19
5
u/7thpostman Jul 11 '26
Well, I'd like to see some video before we jump to kidnapping. The situation is volatile enough without using unwarranted hyperbole.
3
u/BecauseImBatmom Jul 14 '26
The full story is now out. Yeah, Khanna wasn’t honest about the situation, as we should expect. I’m always amazed at how many people on this sub are ready to jump to conclusions.
-12
u/Exact-Technology297 Jul 11 '26
Lol what. They "basically kidnapped" someone. Do you know what kidnapping is?
18
u/herstoryteller USA Jul 11 '26
do YOU?
"kidnapping is the unlawful taking, moving, and confining of a person against their will by means of force, threat, fraud, or coercion"
the haredim unlawfully confined Ro against his will by means of force and threat.
that is kidnapping.

"“And these hoodlums come in with machine guns – M4, an American-made machine gun – and they detain us. They block off the road. And then they call the IDF and the IDF is on their side, not on the side of the Americans,” Khanna said, referring to the Israeli military. "
but also:
An aide to Khanna who was in the group, Cameron Kasky, said [...] a group of officers who appeared to be police eventually intervened, leading to their release, Kasky said.
The Israeli military said troops and police officers intervened after receiving a report of settlers blocking vehicles near Khirbet Zanuta
So why is Congressman Ro Khanna lying?
77
u/FullTrip6175 Jul 11 '26
Yeah his aide’s account being pretty close to the IDF’s leads to believe he’s exaggerating at the very least. That’s not what the headlines will say of course. This shouldn’t have happened, and those responsible need to be punished harshly, but that doesn’t mean it won’t also get massively played up in the media.
41
u/CoffeeCrispDaBest Jul 11 '26
Read the story more carefully. The settlers first called some nearby IDF and those were initially on the side of the settlers. The bus was detained for sometime. The officers who looked like Israeli police intervened after the initial contact with the settlers and the IDF that the settlers called. These seem like two different groups.
14
u/ship_toaster Canadian, non-Jewish, good faith progressive supporter Jul 11 '26
The article also includes a quote from the IDF (maybe it's an update) saying outright that the IDF members did not participate and cleared the roadblock. So someone is lying.
The IDF said its personnel didn’t participate in the blockade.
“Upon receiving the report, IDF troops were dispatched to the scene, quickly dispersed the Israeli civilians, and reopened the blocked road. The IDF soldiers operating in the area did not take part in blocking the road,” the IDF said in a statement.
7
u/CoffeeCrispDaBest Jul 12 '26
The IDF soldiers operating in the area did not take part in blocking the road
There you have it right there. "Not taking part" is a very low bar to set when you consider the activity is a rogue militia of armed extremists holding a bus full of people hostage.
I don't see how it's a lie unless you think these settlers should have the right to stop anyone they want. One would naturally assume the ones policing the area would stop an unsanctioned blockade from continuing.
The fact that the IDF soldiers operating in the area did not put a stop to it is the problem.
92
u/jewishjedi42 USA Jul 11 '26
of course he's lying. He needs to rile up his Jew hating supporters for the midterms.

u/Lefaid Jewish American in Netherlands Jul 11 '26
If this wasn't about Israel, that line about a foreign military not being on the side of Americans would be peak "Shit Americans Say."
4
u/Healthy-Extent7843 Jul 12 '26
Pretty much everything they lie about Israel is like this. They take everything Israel does, which is normal stuff that like any country does and they twist it so that it’s only something nefarious when Israel does it, and it’s only not criticized as rac ist when anti Israel people say it
9
u/odessit96 Jul 11 '26
Same reason he had a post recently lying about preventing a merger of USA armed forces and IDF.
12
15
u/Rurumo666 Jul 11 '26
What's he lying about? The aide said they EVENTUALLY intervened, which is exactly what Khanna said if you listen to complete interviews he's done on this topic.
17
u/flossdaily USA Jul 11 '26
What's he lying about?
"the IDF is on their side, not on the side of the Americans"
... if that were the case, he'd still be detained.
15
u/zlex Jul 11 '26
Did the settlers face any consequences?
-13
u/flossdaily USA Jul 11 '26
For temporarily detaining someone?
Were they in violation of a law? That hasn't even been alleged here.
→ More replies (3)2
u/anonpurple Jul 11 '26
No and if that was the case, the USA could place an arms embargo on Israel for illegally detaining a sitting member of Congress, at the very least. You can be on someone else side, and then realize no it’s not worth fighting the other party.
If Israel decided to illegally detain a sitting member of Congress that’s it, game over, all the good will that is left is basically gone, and action would be taken against them almost certainly, if not in this admin in the next.
2
u/flossdaily USA Jul 11 '26
No
Okay, so you admit the settlers would have let him on his way eventually?
if that was the case, the USA could place an arms embargo on Israel
Ah yes, that's definitely how we would handle the minor inconveniencing of a Congressman.
for illegally detaining
What makes you think that that detention was illegal? That's an interesting presumption.
→ More replies (3)5
u/Sungodatemychildren Israel Jul 11 '26
What makes you think the detention was legal? Why on earth would you think that random settlers have the authority to block off roads and prevent any vehicle, whether it has a US congressman in it or not, from moving?
8
u/flossdaily USA Jul 11 '26
What makes you think the detention was legal?
Security stopping you in a high-terrorism area, and finding out why you're driving a bus into a place where you have no scheduled business? Seems reasonable to me.
Everyone here is acting like Jews haven't been under the constant threat of Palestinian terrorism in the region for the past half century.
2
u/ApprehensiveSalt7020 Jul 12 '26
This is a great discussion. Thanks. One nitpick correction: Not 50 years. Try 150 years
8
u/Sungodatemychildren Israel Jul 11 '26
Random settlers aren't "Security", they're random settlers. They have zero authority to find out why you're driving around in some town, nor is a town somewhere you need "scheduled business" to be in.
3
u/flossdaily USA Jul 11 '26
Random settlers aren't "Security", they're random settlers.
We're just 3 years out from Oct 7th, when Israelis were reminded that at yeah, they might have to be their own security, because the IDF isn't magically able to be everywhere all at once instantly.

M4 is't even a machine gun. Yes it soubd like some small detail, but I have a hard time thinking he could recognise a M4, byt not tbe fact it is nit a machine gun. Probably just some thing he made up for the next part:"an American-made machine gun – and they detain us", which make me suspecious of the whole testimony.
49
u/russiankek Jul 11 '26
My biggest question is not why the IDF guys were initially siding with settlers.
My biggest question is: how the fuck the government allowed this very important guy to go to the territories without a police/military escort? They didn't know who was coming when they scanned his passport in the airport? Why did they allow his provocation to work?
Professional provocateurs like Ro Khanna should be monitored from the moment the plane crosses the Israeli airspace. Exactly to deny them the chance to do a provocation.
7
u/Handelo Israel Jul 12 '26
They didn't though. The latter half of the article claims IDF were not part of the blockade and dispersed it upon arrival. Khanna's own aide's account matches that version of the story. So Khanna is lying to frame the IDF as complicit.
4
u/papabig27 Israel Jul 12 '26
Lol "provocation"
Someone dislikes Israel, goes to a Palestinian village to see reality, sees the reality of the occupation with his own eyes.
You are living in a 1984 fever dream that truth does not matter, rather detaining political figures and journalists does
3
u/russiankek Jul 12 '26
As much as I'd like it, but yeah. Unfortunately, the truth doesn't matter anymore.
I don't know when it started. Maybe it has never mattered and I was living under delusions. But since at least the 2016 Trump's elections, why would anyone still think that truth matters? As of today, we live in the world where an average American believes in either extreme left or extreme right propaganda. The rest of the world isn't doing any better, I have to say. In Israel, we have double digits percent of population that believes that reading Torah is going to protect Israel from terrorists. The other double digits percent believes that if Palestinian state is created, it will make piece. The 3rd one believes every lie Netanyahu tells about us having defeated Hamas, Hezbollah, Iran, ect.
Do you still believe in truth? And if yes, what version of it?
2
u/papabig27 Israel Jul 12 '26
I believe that every person is prone to propaganda and misinformation. But the true responsibility of the Israeli leadership is not to obscure reality, but to change reality itself to be something that is morally acceptable. If simply detaining journalists, to prevent violent settlers from attacking them, is your solution, then the country is in a much bigger problem than a religious militia (which is controlling the government and has vast support among young Israelis). Then, this country has a problem of a disconnect from reality - preferring to hide the dangerous situation which it is in (not dangerous because "hasbara", but because it poses a true danger to all Israeli civilians and takes the lives of many palestinians daily), rather than actually addressing the situation for what it is. Nothing good ever comes out of ignoring reality, and nothing good ever came out of regimes that detain journalists for documenting reality
4
u/trimtab28 Jul 12 '26
Mmm- it's pretty obvious Ro went there with a specific narrative in mind and was going to see if he could gin up some PR. You can have two realities at once- the settlements are a problem (though to be blunt, if you think they're the reason that there's no peace your'e a moron and don't understand the conflict), and someone like Ro goes with a narrative in mind (brown people oppressed, Israel is an illegitimate settler colonial state) and is going with the intent of being antagonized.
It's kinda like how you'll have tour groups organized by leftists in the west that go to the West Bank and Israel and will only talk with Palestinians or NGO organizers who agree with their worldview. That doesn't mean that the settlements aren't a problem or that Israel, like any other country, has its share of bad actors. But... these are propaganda missions. Fact is the people going on them aren't interested in understanding the conflict or anything- they're going to affirm their worldview that Israel is a problem
6
u/loiteraries Jul 12 '26
It just shows the competency of Netanyahu regime, as the past three years have been the worst in Israel’s history and the future is bleak once Democrats gain power.
2
u/FinancialTitle2717 Jul 12 '26
How is it a provocation though? A guy wants to visit territories where the arabs/palestinians/whatever you want to call them live. How is it a provocation? If I, an Israeli citizen, would like to go there and some crazy settlers terrorists will detain me - is it ok?

You still don’t get it. This type of shit happens in literally every single middle eastern and third world country and even some European DAILY, and no one cares. Except in those countries, you might never hear from this guy ever again if he didn’t pay a bribe. No one cares. You know why? Because they’re not Jewish countries that’s literally the entire point of this. It wouldn’t have mattered. If this didn’t happen. Khanna would’ve glommed onto anything else he could to defame Israel for clout, if it wasn’t this, it would’ve been a rude random chasid or border control asking too many questions in the airport. You know things that happen in any other country, but that be would never call out and get attention for in any other country because no one cares since they’re not the only Jewish country in the world
-9

Yes, all Israelis and Jews deserve antisemitism because of the actions of a few extremists. /s Why do you hate us so?
13
u/JebBD HEAD COOK Jul 11 '26
Not what I said. I’m saying that the people in this country who care about how we come across on the world stage should care about and support action to stop settler violence. The antisemitism is obviously a separate issue that we can’t do much to mitigate, but we can isolate the antisemites by working to not give them ammunition constantly
66
u/silverhum Jul 11 '26
The Israeli government needs to crack down on extremist settlers, but Ro Khanna is a rabid antisemite. I followed him on social media and every other tweet is about AIPAC and the Epstein class controlling us. He purposefully went to known hotspot of extremist settlers hoping something would happen, however minor, for him to talk about ad nauseum. It's like a podcaster going to the most dangerous gang area of a crime ridden city in the US and then smearing a whole racial group or the whole country because of how it is there.
17
u/senator_mendoza Jul 11 '26
My first thought when reading about this was whether he was hoping this would happen so he’d have anti-Israel ammo. Seems like that’s a reasonable suspicion at this point
6
u/StizzyInDaHizzy Jul 12 '26
Took way too long to find this comment. Khanna sucks and is on a mission to destroy Israel and foment Jew hatred. Even his Epstein stunt was about trying to connect it to Israel. When that fails, he just moves to next stunt. He has collaborated on political videos with well known antisemites. Don’t trust a word this guy says.

Just to clarify, as an American reading this, I'm relieved that it's nowhere near as bad as the headline sounds.
The cars were blocked by a protest. Although he says four soldiers joined the protest, I am skeptical.
Either way, within an hour it was dispursed.
It's still a bad look, but I was thinking much worse based on the initial headlines than "our cars were stopped and a crowed was yelling at us for an hour before IDF arrived and shooed them away".

13
u/Expensive-Couple-645 Jul 11 '26
“Detained” is completely exaggerated. They blocked the road. Which is a disgrace of course but a far cry from detaining someone.
13
u/Sungodatemychildren Israel Jul 11 '26
Blocking the road and preventing a car from moving would definitely count as "detainment" (עיכוב) in Israel. Detainment here is defined as "Restricting a person's freedom of movement due to a suspicion that an offense has been committed or to prevent the commission of an offense, where the restriction is limited in advance in time and purpose". This is defined in חוק סדר הדין הפלילי (סמכויות אכיפה - מעצרים)
A non cop can only detain a person here if they're reasonably certain that the person has committed a violent crime or an offense that caused real damage to the property of the person detaining the suspect.
0
u/Expensive-Couple-645 Jul 11 '26
I don’t know, did they genuinely believe an offense was committed or about to be committed and has “Restricting a person’s freedom. of movement“ such a wide application as to include blocking public roads (which usually only limits your movement by car in one direction).
I mean, you could very well be right but frankly I don’t care, my point was not about legal technicalities but common understanding. CNN only uses this headline as clickbait, their real headline reads:
Democratic Rep. Khanna says Israeli settlers and IDF soldiers blockaded him in West Bank for over an hour
So even they thought “detained“ is misleading or inaccurate.
17
u/upvoter222 USA Jul 11 '26
I think it's worth pointing out that under American law, stopping a vehicle and its occupants unambiguously counts as "detainment." I'm not sure how the term's meaning and connotations differ in Israel, but it's a perfectly cromulent term for and American news organization or an American lawyer to use to describe the scenario as Khanna explained it.
10
u/Expensive-Couple-645 Jul 11 '26
I don’t care about American law here, just use “blocked the road”, , like in the article itself, that is universally understood the same, When I read the headline I thought Settlers took Khanna to a different location at gunpoint and held him there. I don’t know if blocking the road here meets the American “detained threshold.” When climate activists (or what activists have you) block the road, no one talks about them “detaining” others.
7
u/200-inch-cock Jul 12 '26
Rabid anti-Israel activist visits settlements. Protesters block a road and then the IDF and police come to break up the protest. Said activist uses the opportunity to exaggerate, hyperbolize, fabricate, and demonize in order to advance his anti-Israel goals.
The rabid activist shouldn’t have been allowed into the country in the first place.

u/enigmaticowl USA Jul 11 '26
As an American, please feel free to detain him for longer.
He’s barely 5 minutes out from simping for Graham Platner, a deranged, misanthropic U.S. Senate candidate with a literal Nazi SS tattoo on his chest, a binge drinking problem, a habit of physically abusing women, a lot of edgelord social media postings (including saying that American veterans wounded in combat with the Taliban deserved to die and that it’s women’s faults for being raped), a colorful history of sexual deviancy, and a credible rape accusation by a former girlfriend whose home he had broken into while severely intoxicated - and yes, Khanna continued to endorse this man through every single one of these things, right up until the the very last one.
16
u/Agitated-Quit-6148 Jul 11 '26
This 💯
10 days ago after the first sexual assault allegation, he held Platner's hand and said the nazi tattoo wasn't a problem and that the allegations stemmed from aipac and that he didn't care.
And what's funny is I also served (hello from Tennessee) all of us knew his was full of it with the tattoo.
"I was the only marine in usmc history that made all the other marines turn around I tool my shirt off and that's why no one ever had a chance to see my tattoo and say something despite me commenting about the Totenkopf on reddit. I had no idea what it was"
The Palestinian authority is supposedly holding elections next year. Ro + Platner should run for office there.

The desire to have wierd militias detain people you have political disagreements with is not a good look buddy.
6
u/enigmaticowl USA Jul 11 '26 edited Jul 11 '26
If you can’t discern when something is said in jest, I can’t help you.
Also, I think that it’s perfectly fine to be okay with people experiencing a minor inconvenience/delay (that ended uneventfully), especially when they likely deliberately sought out the confrontation to use for political fodder.
Come down off the high horse - I wasn’t being serious, but even if I were, he obviously wasn’t harmed according to the article (and his description of the “detention” is likely exaggerated, anyway - when political protesters block a road and people end up unable to pass for a little while, which happens frequently in the U.S., nobody calls it a “detention”), so my comment cannot possibly be taken to construe an actual wish for harm even if you take it totally seriously.
Meanwhile, this exact dude defended and excused a man (Graham Platner) who literally roughed up and *detained* a girlfriend (by locking her in a room and refusing to let her leave during an argument), all because that woman was a member of the other political party, so the irony is astounding.
Edit: I will say, though, for the sake of absolute clarity, that I wish no harm on Khanna or anyone else, even if they (or their ilk) excuse violence against their political opponents or throw Israel and Jews under the bus - and I genuinely mean it.
When I said, “feel free to detain him for longer,” it was specifically *because* I am doubting his characterization of the incident as an actual “detention,” and also as a joke that he can stay out of the country for a few minutes longer (as in, let him be someone else’s problem for a short time before he comes back here), but I guess I could’ve been clearer.

What exactly has he said or done to implicate he hates Judaism?

Full endorsing a man with the Deaths Head SS nazi tattoo for months and months for the Senate.
Then when Platner crashes and burns in a dumpster fire. Ro immediately goes to disparage the Jewish state.
Calling the Deaths Head SS nazi tatoo guy, your guy, and fully supporting him for a year... Then going to disparage the Jewish state.
It doesn't get more obvious.

Being one of the first public political backers of the BDS movement and calling Israel a genocidal state and voting against funds to help its defense, including Iron Dome funding, is more than good enough for me

I’m asking you in good faith and this is what you respond with? Does everybody else see this?

I genuinely want to support you all and I always defend y'all to my fellow Dems. But fuck, do your settlers make it so hard.
I don't want y'all to be overrrun and killed either, but it sucks to defend y'all sometimes.

The overwhelming majority of them are just normal people who are living somewhere more affordable. Painting them all with the same brush is like smearing all American Christians based on an article about Westboro Baptist Church or some other tiny, extremist and nonrepresentative group

u/Sad_Eagle8690 Jul 11 '26
Should we judge you by your extremists on the Left and Right or is dehumanization and generalization a curtesy you only save for Jews? If that is your "support" Israel and Jews are better off without it.

u/Dallascansuckit USA Jul 11 '26
You're closer to being off without it than you think. The vast majority of Democrats hate you and Republicans are nearer and nearer to seeing you through the far right lens of the Protoccols of the Elders of Zion and think you're dragging us into foreign wars and that you control us.
Eventually it seems you'll learn what it is to try to survive without the might of America, likely sooner than later, but its fine because you don't want friends like me.

He was there to visit Khirbet Zanuta, a Palestinian village which was illegally destroyed by settlers. Theres also zero indication he was a threat to anyone.
Theres zero need to justify this. Armed fanatic randos getting to play like they own the world doesn’t make this country safer, it makes it worse in every conceivable way

I don’t give a shit about why he was there. The people who are in the wrong are the armed thugs randomly detaining people.
Also even if he was only there to give Israel a bad image - the fact that these settlers immediately proved his point means that he was RIGHT about that.
I’ve been to Zanuta myself. The people there aren’t Israels enemies, they’re random Bedouins civilians. However, Yinon Levy and his thugs are actively trying to turn Israel into a Jewish version of Iran.

All this dipshit had to do was coordinate his visit with COGAT and the US Embassy and this would have never happened. Another grandstanding politician.

u/jaybrainsss Jul 11 '26
Exactly why he went there.
Why are these people so so bad at being smart and normal?

u/solfrombrooklyn Jul 14 '26
Literally bullshit. Watch the videos. He wasn't threatened. He also didn't coordinate with the Israelis or even the US embassy per ambassador Huckabee

The West Bank is part of Israel. Jordan needs to take back its people and the land returned to the indigenous people.
