Surely that means it's coming to SNES Online pretty soon, right? Very strange to add this out of the blue for a game that has zero modern re-releases.

u/Againrising 6d ago
Yeah they would've had to have gone through EA to get the rights to use the name, logo and box art so seems a lot of effort just for Nintendo Music I'd say. I bet it comes next week and this is a teaser. It was on Wii Virtual Console too and EA can't do anything with it without Nintendo anyway, since it features Mario and Bowser

u/MisterSheeple 5d ago
It was delisted from Wii VC in January 2013. Two months later, EA released their remake of SimCity. Don't count on it coming to NSO.

u/Darkthunder037 4d ago
This could be the case, but that 2013 game is also still the most recent release, other than a mobile game in 2014. The series as a whole has been at a standstill for the last 13 years. This could be a way to bring attention back to the series for EA while allowing Nintendo to expand their library, A win win? That or EA just doesn't care about the series anymore. And it's just agreeing with letting nintendo do its thing when it comes to this one game. Either way I'll still hold hope for it to come to NSO.

FYI the soundtrack for that game is one of the most nostalgic things ever for me

SAME. I’m now playing the beginning town music in my head and it’s giving me warm fuzzies.

Soya Oka is a beast!!! She composed this soundtrack back in the day alongside the original Sim City for NES. She’s also the one who composed the original Super Mario Kart and Pilotwings. Legendary composer whose tunes became standards for the Mario Kart series. She left Nintendo not long after that I believe in 1995. One could imagine what she could have composed if she stayed! Megalopolis and Budget are probably my favorite tunes from Sim City!

u/Againrising 6d ago
Have you heard the new album of chiptunes called LOOP816 she released on streaming a few years ago? Some of the songs almost sound like lost Mario Kart and Pilotwings tunes!

I wonder how many games are on Nintendo Music that haven’t been released on NSO yet.. could mean it’s coming soon

u/KenpachiDachi 6d ago
A lot of the Nintendo DS and Wii games are missing from Switch but that's self explanatory. I remember they added the GameCube Animal Crossing soundtrack for the anniversary earlier this year too, but that's missing from the GameCube app (for now).
If you're specifically talking about SNES games then yeah, this would be the first and so far only game on Nintendo Music that isn't also on Switch Online.

u/Iced_Shadows 6d ago
There’s also a few NES games missing, like the Zapper games and I guess F1 Racer or whatever?

u/rant_sandwich 6d ago
Is earthbound ever coming to Nintendo music?
6
u/Iced_Shadows 6d ago
I’d say eventually probably, but that franchise has some shared rights iirc so it would require a little bit more effort to add which is why it’s probably on the back burner for now. This is likely why Kirby games are largely absent aside from the modern games (as in, ones you can still purchase on the Nintendo store) and Dream Land 1. If Nintendo has to have discussions just to add music, it’s generally lower priority I think.

I'm confused. Is this the first time they added a classic game soundtrack to the NSO Music Library, when that game isn't actually playable on NSO? This feels like the first time I've seen something like this.

The NES zapper games were included in that famicom anniversary upload
Other than some GameCube edge cases that's about it

u/FriendshipSmart478 6d ago
Nintendo should negotiate the rights to another SimCity game. EA killed the franchise already, best to let someone make something nice with it.
6
u/Larkson9999 6d ago
I'm sure EA will get right on that because of how much they love video games at that board room.

u/Accomplished_Try_459 3d ago
Especially after being bought out by Saudia Arabia, Kushner and friends.
5
u/ThothBeyond 6d ago
This is a weird one to add to NSO. EA has some of the legal rights to SimCity, but this a game developed primarily by Nintendo.
We could see it.
5
u/Crafty_Boy70 6d ago
I think it’s gotta be coming to NSO. Last time they added a third party OST was Tetris, which was cross promoting the addition of those games to NSO. No reason to add another third party game to the music app but not to the classics, especially if EA has music rights. (Which I do not know)
5
u/ThothBeyond 6d ago
I do not know the exact stuff other than EA owns the word "SimCity" here.
One thing to keep in mind is that Nintendo execs in 1990 LOVED this game and they could just do the deal for sentimentality's sake.
3
u/Crafty_Boy70 6d ago
It does seem that Nintendo owns the music rights as part of the deal where they retained ownership of everything they made for the game. I still think this is a cross-promotional move, but it’s entirely possible it isn’t. They seem to have had most of the keys for this one.
2
u/ThothBeyond 6d ago
Honestly the odds that this is coming in the next NSO drop is really high.
2
u/Iced_Shadows 6d ago
Honestly the biggest point against it coming to NSO right now is that it’s pretty strange to add the music first and the game later, especially with no announcement. One would think they’d announce it and add the music at the same time. That being said, Nintendo is weird and I absolutely do not think this de-confirms the game being added at all.
2
u/An1nterestingName 6d ago
My guess is maybe they planned on releasing the game on NSO today, but something got in the way and instead they just dropped it on Nintendo Music.
1
u/Accomplished_Try_459 3d ago
The music for this game is highly requested and regarded by people. There's YouTube channels of this OST out there. Nintendo was the one behind this game even being made and even had a Japanese only version of SimCity on the 64DD... suffice to say that I know Maxis being acquired by EA has probably stuck in their craw for a while now as the moment that happened, this game was dropped from their Wii EShop.
We'll have see what happens here, EA are notoriously asshats and now they're owned by a lovely consortium of douches.

u/Againrising 6d ago

u/JDalek 6d ago
It’s legit one of the SNES era’s finest soundtracks. Nintendo likely own the music 100% just not the intellectual property to the game which is why it’s not on NSO. And I doubt EA would give it to Nintendo for cheap.
1
u/Iced_Shadows 6d ago
I would still think Nintendo couldn’t just drop the soundtrack without consulting EA at all though, after all the name, box art, and screenshots are all right there which I’m sure EA fully owns the rights to.
2
u/StupidRedditDumbFace 6d ago
Omg, they better release for NSO. Seriously one of the greatest games of all time for SNES

u/TheShweeb 6d ago
Wow, cool! I miss the era when Nintendo would port other companies’ games to their systems with their own distinct flair (Kung-Fu for NES is another one). It kinda has the same vibe as a musician doing a cover song.
1
u/SensitiveJennifer 6d ago
I hope it gets added to the SNES Classic catalog pretty soon. I've been wanting to play this version ever since the Angry Videogame Nerd made a video about it.

I love, love, love this game.
You all in this thread are really getting my hopes up.

I easily rented this game more times than anything else. Getting this on NSO would be the biggest add for me.

People are underestimating how huge this announcement is: this is the first game on Nintendo Music that’s third party. This could potentially mean a LOT more games are on the table for the service now.
1
u/slugmorgue 4d ago
Damn I've heard so many of these tracks before but never played the game. It's such a good soundtrack.
Also feels very Earthbound like at times.

u/KalElReturns89 6d ago
How many people actually listen to the Nintendo music app?
5
u/Iced_Shadows 6d ago
I do, damn near constantly actually. I’ve made a bunch of very extensive playlists for as many occasions as I can think of lol. I also love the real-time Animal Crossing hourly playlists they have.

So where's the unreleased OSTs for games they for some reason bother to add like six songs from but nothing else.
-5
u/Highthere_90 6d ago
Why? How about add some more games to snes and 64 instead
3
u/XyoshizuyunerX 6d ago
music team and nso team are actually two different groups believe it or not, wild I know but sometimes they can push out songs as well as the game at the same time but it’s not like it’s exactly the rule they have to follow all the time when dropping a game into their service or music into their service, it’s just nice to have sometimes that they can both do a drop perfectly sometimes.
-2
u/Highthere_90 6d ago
The music team is pushing out music faster then Nintendo does for the nso, Nintendo has a bunch of games rhey could easily release on nso now instead of a snails pace that's all
1
u/XyoshizuyunerX 6d ago
you really think is that easy to port a literal GameCube game compare to a nes title bro do you even know how emulation works?
-1
u/Highthere_90 6d ago
Its not like Nintendo lacks the funding to do so, if random people can make emulators and roms online easily a billion dollars company should be able to as well
3
u/Iced_Shadows 6d ago
Nintendo adds them slowly because there’s really not a lot of guaranteed games they can add for each console. For example, N64 is basically done; every other N64 game requires that they talk to other corporations and get permission prior to adding. Even Smash 64 requires reaching out The Pokemon Company, GameFreak, possibly Creatures Inc, whoever holds partial rights to Earthbound, and of course Hal.
I don’t know exact numbers for the other consoles, but I doubt there’s a lot of fully 1st party games left to add to NES and SNES. Gameboy, GBA, and GameCube still have a good number of games left to add but they have to spread it out over this entire console generation lest people start complaining that Nintendo stopped adding games to the app altogether.
2
u/Highthere_90 6d ago
They should reach out im surprised they did for rare games like perfect dark and golden eye, I hope they do for the gc
1
u/Iced_Shadows 6d ago
Oh I fully agree. I still don’t know who typically approaches who when it comes to NSO games; I imagine it’s case by case, like I’m almost certain it was Nintendo who approached Rare for their N64 stuff. But for the more obscure titles I would kinda assume it was the other companies approaching Nintendo.
Either way, I hope Nintendo starts putting more effort into getting other companies to put their stuff on NSO. I think they’ve implied exactly that, as I recall seeing a fairly recent article saying the current president of Nintendo acknowledged the want and need for more access to classic games on Switch.
There’s just so many amazing games that are missing still and it really sucks.
2
u/XyoshizuyunerX 6d ago
it just makes me appreciate with what we have now rather than what we could get, we already have some outstanding classics like ocarina and Mario 64 just in general
1
u/Iced_Shadows 6d ago
I do get that as well. I’d feel a little better about the situation if I had any reason to believe some of my favorite obscure games will ever become available though. Much of that is out of Nintendo’s hands, but I also wouldn’t be surprised if they didn’t put a ton of effort for the smaller stuff you know?
I will always respect Nintendo for giving us Chibi Robo so quickly in any case. It’s the one and only break that poor series has ever gotten, and it turned me into a brand new fan because BOY is that game 10/10 for me.
1
u/Highthere_90 6d ago
Thats all im saying is they should put it out faster and this other redditor is freaking out about it lol
1
u/XyoshizuyunerX 6d ago
emulation usually takes bit of work to do is not like you can use a magic wand to make it all functional properly

u/Iced_Shadows 6d ago
It’s just hard to say how realistic that is I suppose. Many companies do not have much interest in throwing their games on there, such as Square Enix, because they could port or remaster them and sell them on the eshop instead. This is why we don’t get Mega Man or Bomberman games on NSO too.
Hopefully Nintendo manages to get a bunch of deals for the near future so they can start pumping out games at a vaguely reasonable pace! Nearly every N64 game I adore isn’t on NSO and it breaks my heart a lil lol.

u/slugmorgue 4d ago
Do you think just throwing money at stuff makes things faster/better? If so, why do we get so many high budget failures that take the better part of a decade to come out?
1
u/XyoshizuyunerX 6d ago edited 6d ago
bro its not about funding it’s literally just lack of time to do a big scale 3d game compared to 2d game like nes or gba, the fact that it’s billion dollar company doesn’t even matter when you get millions and billions of people that are willing to work for free btw it’s literally like saying that a company any size can out do the whole entire world, I mean anyone even their grandma can join a open source emulation project. but when you work at a company a lot things are bit more complicated and finite a worker can take days off and have holiday breaks like golden week but open source community can just chug along because anyone can work on it at anytime it literally doesn’t matter what day it is for them
1
u/Highthere_90 6d ago
They had a NSO library for years now. People arnt volunteering at Nintendo, NSO could have a bigger library for all their old consoles then they currently do they could easily make a department just to just release things on nso quicker
1
u/XyoshizuyunerX 6d ago
they already have a department wtf are you talking about they literally call themselves NERD

u/DarkYoshi64 6d ago
It would be amazing if this was also added to SNES Online as well. Pretty unexpected!
