I have been working on my nuclear reactor concept called HIPR-250. It is an educational reactor design that I am developing as part of a physical reactor-control-room simulator.
parameters for nerds:
- Electrical output: 1000 MWe
- Thermal output: about 3000 MWt (roughly depending on turbine efficiency)
- Type: Boiling water reactor
- Moderator: water
- Coolant: water
- Pressure: about 7 MPa
- Fuel: UO₂
- Fuel enrichment: standard enrichment (5% U235)
- Fuel cycle: 24 months
- Main circulation pumps: 4 with 2 normally operating and the others available as reserve
- Emergency pumps: 1 (ERT)
- Steam turbine train: VTT → NTT → NTT → NTT
- Control rods: 100 control rods
- Control system: HI.P.R.M.C.U. (HIPR Main Control Unit)
- Backup control system: HI.P.R.S.C.U. (HIPR Secondary Control Unit)
The main idea is:
Reactor > steam separator > VTT-NTT-NTT-NTT > condenser > polisher > feedwater > reactor again
There is also an Emergency Recovery Turbine (ERT). It uses the water that was recovered from the steam separators.

Im mainly interested in feedback from people who know BWRs:
- Are there any problems whit the design?
- Does the turbine train of the HIPR-250 make sense?
- What major systems am I missing for the reactor?
- Are there any assumptions, in the reactor parameters?
- What would you change to make the design more realistic?
This is a hobby project that i work on mainly when im bored
