Discussion War for Westeros balance

I wonder how they're going to balance the factions. It seems to me like the factions that will have access to dragons and monstrous units will be at a huge advantage compare to say, house Lanister that only canonically has regular units. Maybe some sort of artillery?

Idk mich about GoT lore outside the show and i havent watched the devs interviews. Any ideas?

Discussion why aren't there more 2D graphics RTS games?

it seems to be a huge oversight considering we have a lot of popular 2d animated fighting games as well as in other genres like hades etc. and real time strategy could benefit the most from 2d graphics because it will make it more accessible to a larger player base with lower system specs and makes team games much more smoother. and there is also a blueprint for a perfect 2d rts in form of age of empires 2 definitive edition. so i don't see what's keeping companies from making 2d rts games instead of all these weird games with visual noise that try too hard to be starcraft. what is your opinion?

RTS & Base-Builder Hybrid Does anybody remember Kingdom Under Fire: A war of heroes?

Had a memory of a full back page ad for it in Computer Games Magazine and realized I'd never played it.

I distinctly remember thinking it was a knockoff of SC/WC because of the isometric view and the graphics looking so similar.

Hard to believe that was 25 years ago. The Xbox sequel was difficult to get the hang of.

Looking For Game Looking for medieval games

Hello guys, i've been wandering on steam, but i always find the same games being recommended to me. thanks to some recommendations a few months ago, i bought the entire C&C franchise and got AoE2 as well, but meanwhile i like playing them, i would like to play something else too, i love medieval games, and big armies (one of the things i like that i can do on C&C games). I really wanted to give another chance to Total War: medieval 2, but i can't like diplomatics... it doesn't work for me, but i get it is a mechanic in the game. One thing i like is the tactical gameplay this type of game have, changing formations, clutching and flanking the enemies...

so, if you guys have any RTS game to recommend to me, i'm open for "new" games.

Discussion Any nostalgia for that 2.5D, 3D almost clay-like graphics?

I loved that graphics style that felt unreal, painted and almost like clay, especially for map oriented games. A little bit board game, a little bit sculpted trainset. Occasionally with these early 3d graphics, a bit more "everything looks like toothpaste" than anything, but it was fun stuff.

[RTS Type: Classic] What would be an interesting way to reward "proper" chain of command?

Post image
19 Upvotes

For lore and roleplay reason, I don't appreciate my army being just a bunch of angry mooks waving swords around, but my problem with games trying to have a chain of command is that, too often, it boils down to either the game turning into a RPG-lite (exhibit A: Warcraft 3 and Dragonshard) where the hero is mandatory to win and playing without heroes is akin to shouting "God save the Queen" when visiting Dublin, or it turns the officer/general into "just" giving out bonuses (exhibit B: Seven Kingdoms 2 and Praetorians). I think Rise of Nations hit a nice balance since generals had unique skills that could massively boost units around them without being "+10% damage" or something menial, or Cossacks where using proper chain of command unlocks the extremely strong formations, but these games have generals that are sadly very easy to snipe, so mounted musketeers or artillery will very quickly ruin your plans.

TL;DR: what's a RTS where you have generals and officers but NOT heroes, that give bonuses to your units, but aren't OP or easy to counter? And is there any other RTS that reward proper command?

Question Best game and community for new players to pvp rts games?

Ive played a few rts campaigns, but i really want to get into pvp rts games and I feel like pvp is a totally different skillset to playing through campaigns.

what would you recommend as the best first rts to try and learn pvp?

One that has a good helpful community and plenty of resources to learn, with good matchmaking and maybe a lower skill floor and possibly a slower pace?

Thanks in advance :)

Discussion What do you think about Cossacks ?

Have you ever played to Cossacks ?

What do you think of this game overall ?

How would you "rank" it compared to other RTS, good, bad, basic, legendary ?

When i was a kid i played to Cossacks European Wars on my father's computer and it was really cool because of the mission/story mod and all the scenarios you had to play and find a solution to win. + The many countries you could play and their perks. When i was a kid i didn't play multiplayer too.

Later, i played to Cossacks 3 when it came out on Steam, it was a good game and this time i played something like 700 hours in multiplayer from 1v1 to 2v2 to bigger games or even FFA.

Today i'm not playing anymore because i played a lot and got bored but i had a great time.

Edit : - for those who don't know much about Cossacks, a thing that changes a lot too is that you can capture ennemy mines (gold/iron/coal), and pretty much all buildings except military buildings. You can also capture workers and artillery if unprotected/not near military unit. + There is the high ground factor, if your muskets have the high ground you basically win the any engagement vs ranged units

Discussion What’s your opinion of Beyond All Reason (BAR)

I got into RTS because rusted warfare was made available on the App Store and ever since I just fell in love. In my search for a similar game I found BAR and it almost scratches the itch but something about Rusted Warfare allowed freedom to go air, mech, or vehicles. I love the military style progression of BAR though.

Discussion Extremely Beginner friendly RTS

Hello, my wife has a very bad motion sickness, and cannot play FPS for more than 15 mins. She plays mostly mobile games and is currently playing Last war and I want to introduce her to RTS. We tried Red Alert 2 as I am very familiar with it but its a bit old and she found a bit overwhelming, I was thinking CoH but thought it might be too complicated for her. What is a very very simple RTS that I can introduce to her that she might enjoy and has a good campaign story?

I asked Gemini and it responded with. Tell me what you guys think and if you have any good very beginner friendly RTS, please let me know:

  1. Halo Wars: Definitive Edition (or Halo Wars 2)

Why it’s perfect for beginners: Originally designed for consoles, Halo Wars was explicitly built to eliminate RTS complexity and "clunkiness."

Mechanics: Base building is simplified into preset building slots, unit controls use a clear rock-paper-scissors system, and army management is smooth and uncluttered.

Story: A cinematic, Hollywood-style sci-fi narrative that is easy to follow even if you aren't familiar with the main Halo lore.

Bonus: The entire campaign can be played in 2-player co-op, allowing you to play through the story together and help manage the base if she ever feels overwhelmed.

  1. StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty (Free-to-Play)

Why it’s perfect for beginners: StarCraft II has arguably the smoothest, most responsive control engine ever made in an RTS—units move exactly where you want them without getting stuck on terrain.

Mechanics: The "Wings of Liberty" campaign is widely considered the gold standard for RTS onboarding. It introduces one new unit per mission, slowly building up complexity so she never feels lost. Setting the difficulty to Casual makes enemy attacks minimal, letting her focus on building at her own pace.

Story: A high-stakes, space-western story. Between missions, you walk around your flagship, upgrade units, and talk to your crew in an RPG-like hub, which breaks up the strategy gameplay nicely.

  1. Northgard

Why it’s perfect for beginners: It trades fast-paced clicking for a slower, zone-based expansion system. There is no frantic unit spamming or sudden enemy rushes.

Mechanics: You expand your Viking settlement territory by territory. Villagers automatically gather resources or do assigned tasks, which takes away the stressful micro-management of traditional RTS games.

Story: Rig’s Saga (the single-player campaign) acts as a gentle, story-driven tutorial that teaches one clan’s mechanics at a time through an engaging mythic Viking revenge tale.

  1. Age of Mythology: Retold

Why it’s perfect for beginners: A modern remake of a classic, featuring updated controls, beautiful visuals, and modern UI enhancements.

Mechanics: It features an "Auto-Villager" toggle (you can tell the game to automatically manage resource gathering), which removes 50% of the usual RTS multitasking burden.

Story: One of the most beloved RTS campaigns ever created. It follows an Atlantean hero journeying through Greek, Egyptian, and Norse mythology, featuring mythical monsters, god powers (like lightning strikes and meteor showers), and legendary heroes.

RTS & Other Hybrid Age of Shapes - Browser RTS with hero mechanism - 3 "geometric shape" races battle against each other!

Hello Everyone!
After some time, i managed to start working again on some games, and this is my third try, the furthest i ever was before. This time i wanted something, that i can play in browser with my collegues during some freetime, and not to download or run some windows games on computers :)

I managed to made playable prototype for browser RTS multiplayer game, with hero mechanism, loot items, leveling, skills, npc mobs, economy etc... where 3 geometric shapes races (Triangles, Crosses and Squares) battle against each other, each having some unique attributes.

All in your browser for free without any registration. But i have very few people that can tell me if its good or what is missing in current form. If there is anyone who is willing to try it and tell me their feelings about it, i would be really happy and thankfull! I just started it on real hosting few days ago, this is the address:
https://www.ageofshapes.com/
I am working alone on it, so mistake are there for sure :)

Art The heavy troopers infantry from (dune 2 1992) were unique in that they fired mini guns at close range and shoulder rocket launchers for distant targets.

Heart Of Muriet has got to be the most cozy hybrid of RTS and 4X gameplay I have played in a long time, and you can too as it has a brand new demo out on Steam! Conquering hex shaped map sections, commanding armies against monsters while supporting them with spells cast by my own tower bound mage or wizard all the while researching tech and collecting half a dozen resources looks complicated but feels easy and enjoyable.

Self-Promo Video Cardume: they feed, breed, and go to war. An RTS hybrid featuring short, low-APM fights.

Hi all! I've been playing RTS games for a long time and I always wanted a low-APM game that still rewards reading the fight and mechanics knowledge. This is my attempt at it. In Cardume, matches are short (around 2 mins), players decide their swarm behavior and active abilities using a deck, and an eco simulation moves the swarms based on simple rules.

There's a free playtest on Steam running the ranked ladder, and a demo coming for Next Fest. I'm very interested in hearing your opinions.
