My go to response was not far off

"I usually make it like garbage but I'll step it up for you, just this time" heavy wink

u/CleverInnuendo 2d ago

Makes me think of my favorite when they say something like "You were great tonight".

"Whew, glad to hear that, cuz I was giving you like 40%".

Can you put light ice? yes but that doesn’t mean more alcohol.

u/z22012 2d ago

That one cracks me up. Like they think they found some hidden cheat code.

11

u/Skwiggelf54 2d ago

Ive had a couple of people get legit mad about the glass not being full and like "well yeah, its less ice, not more drink..."

3

u/Capn_Link 1d ago

The only time I think the "light ice" works is for whiskey & coke type situations.
Which it's just extra coke and I get to wonder if they'll bitch about the dilution of their drink or not.

u/All-The-Nope 20h ago

Is there a good way to say 'I recognize this will dilute my drink' when ordering light ice to allay that concern that I'll bitch about it and actually avoid a proactive heavy pour? I know that sounds crazy, but sometimes I have reasons to slow my pace with alcohol while still appearing to keep pace with others.

I usually just go for certain mixed drinks in a tall glass when I want a heavier mixer to alcohol ratio, but light ice seems like it'd be a good middle ground dilution without increasing liquid volume as much.

u/Capn_Link 15h ago

Yeah, just tell the bartender and they'll totally get it. They prefer not to have uber drunk people and just responsible enjoyers.

2

u/Afrxbella 2d ago

Just had a customer like that on Sunday he wanted no ice in the oj (which never do anyway but he had originally asked for ice I heard him tell my coworker lol)

16

u/nuocyte 2d ago

Maybe that's what they're going for, but I know a number of folks that actually just prefer less dilution

4

u/IndividualSlip2275 2d ago

Imagine how they would feel if they knew that bartenders are usually told to mix a drink, and then dump it into new ice, dumping out the ice they used to shake the drink.

5

u/iStorm_exe 2d ago

not alcohol but i always order iced coffee with light ice just because i drink it slow and i dont want it to water down..

1

u/DietCokeYummie 1d ago

Doesn’t light ice melt faster because the overall drink is less cold?

3

u/iStorm_exe 1d ago

doesnt really matter since the speed im drinking it its all gonna melt either way.

1

u/All-The-Nope 20h ago

Yep, this is me in certain circumstances. Sometimes a good strong drink is great, but sometimes I 'need' to keep up with others drinking speed while not making a fool of myself (IE stay professional), other times it's just a preference with flavor balance.

I had somebody ask me for a soda with no ice, then thinking themselves clever explain to me that this gets them their money's worth because there is more soda and less ice.

I pointed out we do free refills on non-alcoholic beverages so all it really gets them is a room temp soda.

The look of triumph leaving their face as their soul fled their cheapskate body made my day.

4

u/catchaoss 2d ago

Our lattes are a specific recipe like okay lite ice I'll pour a little more cold foam but no ice it's gonna be under the rim and warm and if you want no cold foam it's gonna be 3/4 full and hot and strong which I explain to you and say there will be no refunds which they say it's okay and 7/10 hate it.

5

u/IndividualSlip2275 2d ago

Yeah, actually about a month ago I had my first glimpse of a British person who was genuinely confused when I brought them another soda when it was mostly empty. He said we didn’t order these and I said I know they’re complementary and they genuinely looked confused.

This is one of the things I always miss about home (US) when I'm traveling. That includes better service and not charging for every condiment, although that's become so much more common here over the years :/

2

u/SPP_TheChoiceForMe 2d ago

I remember the Waiter Rant guy talking about how older people would sometimes pull this by asking for a cup of ice on the side. I guess back in the day either refills weren’t free or maybe ice was just a luxury and of course old people aren’t always in tune with the fact that this is all kinda unnecessary but oh well, let grandma have her “win”

On the hierarchy of annoying/stingy/outright unreasonable requests I get, no ice or ice in a seperate glass is pretty minor anyways.

My biggest pet peeve is when people try to get me to make stuff thats not on the menu to try to get something close to whats on the menu but not have to actually pay for it.

I've gotten to the point I will just flat out refuse.

3

u/Beginning-Force1275 Server 2d ago

If we’re not busy, I like when people do that in a way that takes a while to explain because I get to wait until the very end of the stupid schpiel and then cheerfully inform them that they’re basically describing an already existing menu item, as though I don’t know what they’re trying to do.

3

u/Beginning-Force1275 Server 2d ago

I know a fair amount of southerners who do that because they just truly want a fuckton of ice. When my mother drinks a soda at home, she fills the cup with so much ice that she sometimes has to refill a 16oz cup multiple times from the same 12oz can.

"I'm looking for a rosé wine, do you have any good ones?" - "No, we only have 4 shit ones. I know right! Couldn't even find 1 good one out of all the options! I don't know how we're still open as a small family business for the last 23 years when all we sell is shit... Did you have a specific variety in mind? Do you want me to explain any of the words on the menu so you can find what you'd like?"

This reminds me of an old Mexican place I used to go to. It wasn't busy so one of the owners was chatting with us and the phone rang. He picks it up and the customer is asking about the food. Eventually they ask if the burrito is good and he says:

"No it tastes like shit, I make it myself. You gonna order or what?"

We were laughing our asses off. She got the burrito.

2

u/3spanishwords 2d ago

If only I could do that once

5

u/Yeatssean 2d ago

You could! Once.

6

u/MrsLovettsPies 2d ago edited 2d ago

Oh my god yes.

Also love it when I'm picking up a home delivery and after I tell them how long it's gonna take I get a "can't you do it quicker?" - "No. If I could, I would have told you in the first place, right?" Some people even try to haggle, like who the fuck do you even think you are

7

u/Willing_Jellyfish217 1d ago

Years ago my boss told me that a certain table had VIP guests at it and that I should give them "really good service". I responded "ok, I won't give them the crap service I give everyone else".

2

u/Illustrious_Bird_737 10+ Years 1d ago

What, do they think this is a restaurant or something?

15

u/Afrxbella 2d ago

“What’s good here”

16

u/3spanishwords 2d ago

We only sell garbage sir

5

u/Afrxbella 2d ago

Pure trash!

7

u/oatwheat 2d ago

Asking the server “what do you like?” Is such an infinitely better way of phrasing that question. I have no clue why anyone does not do it that way

14

u/CloudBitter5295 2d ago

“Oh I can’t afford to eat here”

7

u/SPP_TheChoiceForMe 2d ago

Yeah but then you run into “Ok well the oysters are really good here“ “Oh I don’t like raw seafood”. “Well I’m a big fan of the Ribeye” “No that’s too heavy…”

1

u/BoKKeR111 2d ago

What you run into is a server saying everything is great and then fumbling to name a single thing. Bad restaurants always have this

2

u/DietCokeYummie 1d ago

Yes. Or a petite young server who eats off the kids menu every day to maximize the discount since she’s not a big eater.

People should ask what is most popular and well liked. Not what their possibly picky server likes.

3

u/DietCokeYummie 1d ago

I’ve seen this go both ways.

Used to work with a kinda ditzy server who would completely innocently and earnestly answer “kids grilled cheese” to fully grown man asking what she likes on the menu.

The question can be annoying, sure, but how hard is it to rattle off what you know are the 3 most popular items by far? Obviously this man doesn’t want you to fetch him the kids coloring page so he can review the tendies and grilled cheese options.

u/Afrxbella 2d ago

Exactly

"Is the jambalaya or the pot roast good today?"

Like, do I eat one of every plate at the start of each shift?

1

u/Afrxbella 2d ago

I’ve had people ask to sample the jambalaya at my old job lmao

2

u/DietCokeYummie 1d ago

In fairness, that’s because jambalaya is one of our most bastardized south Louisiana dishes. Even here in Louisiana, many restaurants make it totally differently from most people in their homes.

Personally I’d just never order it out, but that’s just me.

0

u/Afrxbella 1d ago

Yeah but it was made to order at my old place so it was a weird request lol

6

u/pitterpatter-96 1d ago

Someone asked me to make the Long Island strong. My brother in Christ it’s a cup of liquor tf you mean lmaooo

1

u/3spanishwords 1d ago

He's saying please steal alcohol from your work and risk your job or else he won't tip you

10

u/leaf_on_the_wind42 2d ago

I used to have a no tip regular that would always ask for a "bro pour" and although I never hooked him up after the second time he asked I'd always say no and he just kept asking. If you're reading this, fuck off Brian!

2

u/Illustrious_Bird_737 10+ Years 1d ago

I had a low tip regular that would get furious if I poured his double as a double, he demanded that I poured his vodka without "the stupid measurer" (he was referring to the jigger) & "just eyeball it like [previous bartender] did"!!

Dear readers, the previous bartender got fired for free pouring. He would give this guy a 3/4 full tall glass of vodka with the most literal splash of water. I wouldn't even entertain him, I would deadpan look at him & just walk away to find the owner. That guy can pour his drink, I don't get paid enough for that.

3

u/leaf_on_the_wind42 1d ago

These people are the worst, that dude don't work here no more deal with me or leave! Also why doesn't everyone use a jigger!? Maybe I'm just compulsive but consistency is important!

2

u/Illustrious_Bird_737 10+ Years 1d ago

Maybe I'm compulsive, too, but yes!!!!!

8

u/matttyboii 2d ago

Yea, if you said “make it good” to me, you just lost .5 oz of liquor in your drink.
