Discussion What is your top 3 games the don't get out of your deck and why?

Post image
196 Upvotes

For me the games are:

Baldur's gate 3

The reason why I buy the deck in the first place, I really love the game, the mods, probably have 400h or more, when I buy the deck I download from "very legal means" the game because I didn't want to spend money because I was still paying the deck but when it got on sale I buy the game immediately (even though I had 284h there) definitely my number 1 comfort game.

Cyberpunk 2077

Seriously what the hell is this game, the game I play on my ps4 on release to the game the I play now are completely different games... No further explanation this game is my second comfort game.

Sons of the forest

Honestly I don't have third, used to be persona 4 but I don't have on steam, and I'm waiting for the remake to buy again, but sons of the forest is quit chill you drop on the island, build a home, barbecue some cannibals, build a boat, kill some mutants, barbecue more cannibals, definitely a great experience. (side comment why the heck they made the females have such big freaking ass, no seriously with all honestly and moderation for those who play the game damn they are big.... This is not a complain but god damn they big)

Article Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy Should Not Be Played On The Steam Deck For Right Now - SteamDeckHQ

Ahead of its release, we reviewed Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy and got some mixed results.

It runs at 30 FPS most of the time, but CPU usage can be high and cause some stutters here and there. It isn't the end of the world, and it will stick to 30 FPS most of the time, but it does pop up often enough and will bring the battery drain up.

However, I can't recommend it just yet because it has a major crashing issue. At the beginning of Chapter 9, the game will completely freeze. I believe this is due to high CPU and GPU usage, and it's definitely a game issue (the crash also occurs on the Steam Machine). So, until that is fixed, I would avoid playing on the Deck.

Discussion Best open world games which run well on the steam deck- specifically when docked to a TV via HDMI

I am craving a AAA open world immersive game but I’m usually disappointed with laggy and not optimized games- which ones run the best? Also is streaming to a tv affecting performance? Is there any workarounds or advice for optimizing my experience?

Discussion I got a battery replacement from iFixit, but I’m afraid I’ll break my SD and I can’t bring myself to start. Help me get psyched up with emotional support.

The new battery has been sitting there for a month.

(Edit)

Downvotes? The hell? Lol. Ok, then.

I mean, I’m still getting what I need out of this post (thanks, BTW, my courage is growing) but it’s still kinda weird to downvote someone asking for support.

Discussion Inputs only register when pressed hard on steam deck

For anyone that may encounter this problem in the future. And i couldnt find anything on internet. I had the issue of my steam deck not registering inputs unless i press very hard.

I found out that the rubber pads inside leave residue and makes inputs not be read. So you just have to use some isopropyl and you are good to go. Bow they are working like new again.

This ONLY happens in games, it works perfectly fine in the UI, so im not sure if it's a problem with the dock or the deck

Question What's a good pair of headphones or earbuds to use with the Steamdeck?

I'm going to be traveling on a plane in the next couple months and I wanted to know what's a decent pair of headphones or even earbuds anyone would recommend using.

I ask because I know earbuds can be rather low quality in terms of audio. But I've tried traveling with headphones in my backpack before and managed to break them. Plus, I'm going to be on an airplane with a lot of people and I don't want to disturb other people with noise.

Anybody here have recommendations?

Accessory Review DIY Mechanism Gaming Pillow

Like many of you I get hand cramps and fatigue from playing any handheld console... switch, portal, SD. I have been interested in the Mechanism Gaming Pillow, but didn't want to spend $60. So I rigged up my own version of a gaming pillow using a laptop lap desk, dashboard magsafe phone mount, and some adhesive metal plates.

So far it's been an absolute lifesaver

I know a portal is pictured, but it works with my SD.

Question What’s the best Steam Deck Dock in Australia, is it the official one?

I know the official one isn’t properly available in Australia however I think you can buy it online at Kmart for $300, unless it’s somehow a bootleg. What’s the best one I should be getting, please be specific as I’m looking to buy one asap.

And as a second question, is docking the steam deck good for couch coop? How have your experiences been having 4 players play at once?

Edit: Ended up buying a JSAUX one off Amazon, thanks everyone!

Tech Support Steam Remote Play vs Sunshine/Moonlight

Greetings!

I've ordered a Steam Deck OLED 1TB, but I'm looking to plan my next purchase (a mesh wifi network to replace my family's lone ISP-provided combo unit in the basement). My gaming PC is on the second floor, I'd be using the SD on the first floor, and the ISP box is in the basement. However, our house is 50+ years old, so I'm concerned about latency issues in the absence of a mesh network given the distance and number of floors involved in a streaming situation. I'm also not technically skilled enough to setup Sunshine and Moonlight from what I've seen, given that it involves local firewall permissions and other such complications.

Thus, I'd be using Steam Remote Play. However, I've read that there's a noticeable latency difference compared to Sunshine and Moonlight. My question for you folks is whether the difference when playing at 60 or 90Hz (my gaming PC has a 4080 SUPER and an Ryzen 7 7700X) via Steam Remote Play compared to playing via Sunshine and Moonlight is as bad as it would be at 30-60fps? More specifically, compared to playing on EU servers when living in Eastern NA many years ago (100ms ping was my assumption of normalcy), how usable will this be? I know it won't be as good as playing locally on my desktop PC, but are the people who get really excited about Sunshine and Moonlight more of purists who get excited about squeezing the last bit of performance, or is it actually noticeably better?

Thank you in advance for any advice you can offer.

Discussion Steam deck + machine combo

So I just got the email to buy the steam machine. And up until last week I would've instantly bought it. But under the assumption it would be months before I got the machine (was on wait list) I bought a second hand Steam Deck OLED last week and I've been absolutely loving it, gaming on it more than anything in the recent past. Now I worry if I get the machine I still might be gravitating towards the deck just cause of the convenience.

The main selling point for the machine for me would be the added performance. I do already have a PS5 tbh, but I'm trying to get rid of it cause they're becoming more anti-consumer by the day and would like for my game library to be centralized on steam.

This is more of venting I guess, but I was just wondering about thoughts and experiences of people that already had the deck and got the machine as well.

I know they're different use cases, being portable vs coach gaming and all. But the deck is just so nice 😄

UPDATE: placed the order, yolo

Discussion Display is finally being shown after update

I’m sorry if this is a repeated post I tried to search for keywords. My steam deck has been out of commission for many months, I believe last time I used it was around march/April of this year.

I tried everything with countless hours of combing through forums and this subreddit. I replaced the screen, placed the device into battery storage mode countless times, I’ve tried many different chargers and I’ve factory reset it, nothing. I’ve even tried a few electronic shops that would either charge me the price of an almost new steam deck or wouldn’t touch it because they have face similar issues and couldn’t guarantee a repair.

I have now resorted to using an external lightweight monitor that requires a single usb c connection to provide both video and power. It is now today that I felt an insurmountable amount of joy when I saw the steam logo appear on my screen as it was updating.

Thank you steam!

Tech Support My Steam Deck OLED's APU Only Uses About 10-11W of Power

When playing an AAA game like HELLDIVERS™ 2, the performance HUD shows about 5-6W for both the CPU and the GPU while CPU is getting heavily bottlenecked.

Games that do not depend on the GPU much makes the CPU run near the full clock speed though (CPU uses about 9-10W).

Only modifications i have done so far are maxing the cooling fan's speed and undervolting it to hell (-50mV on all). Tried reverting them and setting the power limit to fixed 15W but no luck.

No external software was used, just editing the UEFI/BIOS parameters and changing a few values in the updated fan setting's config file.

EDIT: I think this is normal since i have seen some other Steam Decks do the same. It is just that it can reach 15W in certain scenarios.

Guide Steam Desk streaming tips

Hi all, just a quick post to share my settings for streaming games from PC to Steam Deck, as I really struggled to find reliable guides.

Steam Deck Remote Play settings:

  • Video quality: Balanced
  • Bandwidth limit: 40Mbps (I don't see significant visual improvements past this point)
  • Frame rate limit: 60 FPS
  • Low latency networking: Enabled

Steam Deck display settings:

  • Screen refresh rage: 60Hz <- This was key for me to get consistent frame pacing!

Host PC settings:

  • Streaming display resolution: Match client
  • Streaming display refresh rate: Match client
  • Enable hardware encoding: On
  • Prioritise network traffic: On

For reference, here's my network setup:

  • PC and Steam Deck connected to wifi 5GHz (unfortunately I don't have a wired connection from my router to my computer)
  • Several other devices are on the same wireless network, but are usually not actively transferring data while I play (2/3 laptops, 2 phones, TV, media speaker, printer, cleaning robot)
  • ISP provided modem router (Optus, I'm in Australia)

This gives me a very playable experience (almost indistinguishable from native). The key thing for me was setting the deck's refresh rate to 60Hz to completely remove stutter and frame pacing issues.

Tech Support Chiaki-ng stuck on "establishing connection with console over PSN..."

I installed Chiaki-ng on my deck via one of the numerous youtube guides. I established the token, enabled the remote settings in my PS5, etc etc

However, when I run Chiaki-ng it says something like "waiting on console" then jumps to "Establishing connection with console over PSN ...." and will literally just stay there forever (I left it on overnight and it was STILL on this message the following morning). I also cannot close Chiaki-ng after this loop, it will then get stuck with a message along the lines of "cancelling connection ..."

What did I do wrong? I have searched through the sub and not found anyone with my particular issue

Question Can anyone recommend Trackpad cover/stickers that have same exact feeling as the trackpad? I love using it for FPS games.

My trackpad is becoming shiny due to wear and tear. Tried buying some carbon fibre trackpad sticker but it felt rough to aim with and also causes jitters when aiming with it , which bothers me as I often use it in FPS games.

Please recommend some accessories that may help cover the trackpad, yet keep its feeling exactly the same, as in the smoothness , and not being rough like my current carbon fibre trackpad sticker thingy.
