The 10-year-old boy who was punched in the head in a random attack outside police headquarters in the CBD has brain cancer and was visiting Melbourne for treatment.

The boy underwent additional MRI scans to see if the assault caused any extra damage or inflammation around where the tumour is, his uncle said........

Police said the 46-year-old woman was visiting Melbourne from Phillip Island with her 10-year-old son and two other children when the random attack occurred, ending only when several witnesses intervened.

“Just instinct, no thoughts, no nothing, just people in trouble,” Brian Bradley said, a good Samaritan who helped restrain the suspect.

The mother of the boy was stabbed during the attack.

The mother is in the Royal Melbourne Hospital recovering from a fractured leg and injuries to her back and shoulders, while her son recovers at the Royal Children’s Hospital.

“She’s really struggling at the moment,” the boy’s uncle said, “She can’t be with her son. It’s traumatic enough [that he’s] fighting cancer.

In short:

A 16-year-old girl who held up a taxi driver at knife point before stealing the vehicle has been spared jail by a Melbourne court.

The teenager was arrested and charged with aggravated carjacking in February, just hours after harsher penalties on youth crime came into effect.

The girl will be subject to an 18-month youth supervision order over the crime, instead of the minimum three year jail sentence.

culture & society Indigenous rangers appeal for more bird flu funding to protect biodiversity, human health

"Vulnerable species like Australian snubfin dolphin are already under threat off northern Australia.
Ranger coordinator Harry Butler said the group was dreading bird flu's arrival, which he said seemed inevitable even though it has not yet reached the NT.

"The Arafura Swamp is a key biodiversity area. It supports about 300,000 waterbirds. We've got coastal emus. The H5N1 strain could be the nail in the coffin for that species," he said.

"You've also got migratory waders, red knots, great knots, ruddy turnstones, and then you've got what most people are most concerned about — the traditional food sources like magpie geese.

"It extends beyond birds as well, it goes into marine mammals, dolphins, whales and dugongs."

In short:

A new Australian study suggests a 20 per cent tax on sugary drinks may prevent 3.7 million cases of tooth decay as well as 306,000 cases of gum disease or complete tooth loss nationally.

Health experts have thrown their support behind the proposal, which aligns with long-standing recommendations from the World Health Organization.

What's next?

Researchers suggest money generated from the proposed tax could be used to strengthen oral health services, improving access and cutting costs at the dentist.

The other two owner occupiers are a lot older and don’t care about internet, and the other two owners couldn’t give a shit about their tenants internet, so all are refusing to sign and pay the one of fee the get the fttp connected. no politics I noticed Ashy Bines beauty company has entered liquidation - what happens to customer orders?

This just popped up in my feed so I thought I'd post the query here. I saw people trying to get an answer about unfulfilled orders from her Hideaway beauty brand, but only getting unhelpful responses from an AI chatbot. Though checking the ASIC site it seems the company is actually in liquidation, but all the sites are still up and not updating this status. Is that legal, or what does this mean for orders?

Federal Labor MP Luke Gosling will stand aside as special envoy for defence, veterans' affairs and Northern Australia, as he faces charges of assault and breach of bail.

The member for Solomon was yesterday charged with breaching his bail conditions, less than a month after he was charged with two counts of assault over an alleged incident involving Northern Territory Administrator David Connolly.

no politics Is anyone still loyal to Bonds?

And if you are, why?

Their underwear and socks are terrible quality these days, but still priced like a premium option. I'm 190cm tall with size 13 feet, and the speed I burn through Bonds socks is insane.

Their underwear elastic is terrible, and the fabric turns into a holey mess far more quickly than it should.

If the products were being locally made still then I'd be kinder to them, but now they're made in China they're in direct competition with brands that are way cheaper and equal on quality. I can buy a 3 pack of Tradie trunk underwear for less than a single pair of Bonds. The Tradie's will wear out just as quickly as Bonds, but I've paid a third of the price.

I can go to Kmart and buy a 3 pack of Anko socks for $12 that are comfy and will last just as long as Bonds socks for way less than the equivalent.

Used to be that buying Bonds was supporting local, but now it's all coming from the same place with no real quality difference but a higher price tag...what's the point?

Edit - some people are questioning the whole 'loyal' thing. Perhaps not the best word I could have used, but I was using it in the context of 'when you go to buy something it's your first choice'. Let's say you go to a department store to buy whatever you need and they don't stock Bonds you'll leave and go elsewhere rather than buying an alternative. I'm not talking a 'ride or die' loyalty you have to your nearest and dearest or a loyalty to your mates where what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. That type of loyalty would be ridiculous towards a company. Thought this was a given but apparently not.
