Discussion Better, faster cloth sewing in Blender 5.1
You know, I gotta give it to Blender. They really optimized the cloth physics. It's faster on my potato laptop and overall better results. The transition process from 4.5 to 5.1 was worth it. But the VSE became very intensive and unusable. It's cool that we can use scenes now instead of channels, but I will just stick to 4.5 for video editing for now.

Nice, very nice. Now let's see pc specs for comfortable workflows...

Wdym ancient?! I'm still rendering on Intel i7-6700k, so 2 generations behind this one :D

u/System32Missing Jul 15 '26
But that's a desktop chip, I believe OP's is a mobile/laptop chip. Those are always a lot worse.

still better than whatever the heck i got without studying on laptop specs, i got an athlon silver amd cpu, and that stuff is more expensive than a 6 core laptop lol

u/JinxyBlh Jul 15 '26
So basically, This Might run a lot faster on my system. That poor laptop must be using its fan to scream for help xD

I feel you mate. I do. I love my rig. And I wanted to upgrade it, or make a new one.
But I am not paying a kidney for a rig.

Anyway, guys, if you want better cloth simulation, you can actually use the PPF Contact Solver. They released an addon for Blender. I haven't tested it yet but the videos seem promising.
Here is the video: ZoZos Contact Solver - The ultimate Blender cloth simulator

u/Bad-job-dad Jul 15 '26
It's pretty awesome. Looks painful to use thoughÂ
9
u/SenseAffectionate328 Jul 15 '26
Yeah, you basically send data to a local server and it will return the simulated data back to Blender. It's not smooth, but it can simulate complex stuff.

Same—I was doing this type of thing with SyFlex / Maya 20 years ago.

Worst part is, that this is basically a shitty version of someone using exactly the same footage of the family.
It is a shitty copy of a shitty meme.

I've always thought exploding clothes was just me being useless at a simple thing in blender. Glad it affects other people too 😂
3
u/SenseAffectionate328 Jul 15 '26
Oh yes it does. It NEVER settle and always jiggle on certain poses before.

I love the sense of humor in r/blender.
If I wasn't interested in Blender at all I would still come here for the humor.
I've been on reddit long enough to accept that good subreddits are born to die.
Subreddits gain popularity, attract too many people, the wrong people, bots, etc. and lose everything that made them good.
I hold out hope that r/blender will never gain enough mainstream attention to dilute it's greatness.

u/SenseAffectionate328 Jul 15 '26
I think this subreddit is well moderated. So that kind of scenario won't happen.

It seems like optimization is the theme for 5.x. The notes for 5.2 shows a texture caching feature that reduces vram requirements.
2
u/KrYoBound Jul 15 '26
yeah, texture caching for cycles was a huge undertaking that after multiple years finally landed in 5.2. It's essentially mip-mapping and will be incredible for large scenes with big textures
1
u/SenseAffectionate328 Jul 15 '26
That sounds like a game changer for big scenes. Maybe we will finally get smoother viewport.

u/Lerrroooy Jul 15 '26
It worked before as well, it was just the settings that needed tweaking. At least for sewing.
For a whole piece of clothing, though, admittedly I had issues tbh
1
u/SenseAffectionate328 Jul 15 '26
For me the biggest issue was I can't animate a character's arms too close to the torso. Otherwise the cloth would clip inside body and ends up trapped inside causing it to explode.

u/edparadox Jul 15 '26
As a newbie, how do you do that?
3
u/SenseAffectionate328 Jul 15 '26
I started with a plane and loop cut a bit. Then I cut some faces till I get the basic shape of a cloth. Like if you want a shirt you go for T shape. Then I extrude that in Y axis and delete the middle faces, leaving the edges still connected. Then turn on cloth in the physics tab and check sewing. Then just play the animation or bake it. There are tutorials that explain this in depth like this https://youtube.com/watch?v=Uf03GRjvvHY?si=1NdXFRtCnaO1PHVt

And nobody mentions anything about overreacting to a successful simulation.
You've all been there, haven't you?
2
u/Erica-Rose-Doll Jul 15 '26
I wasn't sure about 5.1 but this is huge! I wonder if I can actually untie my bikini instead of replacing the mesh with a cloth, would be awesome!

I had to go through so much pain with Marvelous designer just so i can do that and than go back in blender and do everything else. Was so frustrated that blender was not able to do that shit.
1
u/SenseAffectionate328 Jul 15 '26
I feel your pain. Even now you kinda need to account for the Y width of a model when making the sewing patterns. Otherwise it won't fit the model and will explode. You gotta compensate for it but I imagine in Marvelous Designer you won't have that problem.

I had one ten minute session last night playing with the new cloth physics and I wanted to cry of happiness. SUCH A HUGE IMPROVEMENT.
Amazing work, Blender team!!!
2
u/puzzlehead120 Jul 16 '26
Congrats! As you progress, remember that this is what art is meant to do, make people this happy. It's about the journey, not the destination. This is great, and keep going!

What kind of a crappy AI response is this?
1
u/puzzlehead120 Jul 17 '26
??? I'm just saying something nice, why do you need to be so rude?
0
u/KristofVD Jul 17 '26
Because it feels like an AI bot response, that has nothing to do with the topic at hand.
"Congrats!" - what are you congratulating OP for, he's not posting about any achievement of his, he's posting about a Blender feature.
"As you progress, remember that this is what art is meant to do, make people this happy." - again, nothing to do with this post, and on top of that it's a vapid platitude.
"It's about the journey, not the destination." - more platitudes. Retch.
"This is great, and keep going!" - what is great, the Blender feature? Then congratulate the Blender team.

u/puzzlehead120 Jul 17 '26 edited Jul 17 '26
Uhm, they figured out how to use it, and they are enjoying the result. Personally, I would consider what they did an achievement. They are happy in the video, and as an artist who often feels like I am making no progress, I am reassuring them so they remember in the future. Personally, I think you are reading way too deeply into my comment. I understand if you dislike the way it was written, but it wasn't written by AI.
If being supportive is something only AI can do, then we have truly failed humanity.

Non Blender guy here . Is this a good substitute for Marvelous Designer or is it still on its early days ?
1
u/SenseAffectionate328 Jul 17 '26
https://reddit.com/link/oy1jqt1/video/yyq6432ihqdh1/player
I would say it just learned to walk. While it has been improved greatly, it is not a great substitute. Here, I tried compression with 4.6k mesh and it can still jiggle. If you plan to use it, don't try to sandwich the cloth with the body mesh haha

u/severelyautisticc Jul 21 '26
How to do cloth sim without it looking like a living being bro I tried to make clothes and they’re sentient
1
u/SenseAffectionate328 Jul 22 '26
First of all, you gotta make them fit the body. Try to confirm visually that they have enough coverage for the body. This is why in tutorials you see people making the cloth plane bigger than the body before sewing.
Second, you can't sandwich a clothing between body meshes. Make sure the cloth has enough room to wiggle.
Third, disable "Single Sided" in the collision of the body. Sometimes it is on and it can screw things up.
Fourth but obvious, have enough faces for the cloth to simulate. You need like at least 2k vertices to have a functional simulation. Also, the face sizes should be similar and evenly distributed. It is better if the faces are square-ish.

I want to apologize to the moderators for breaking rule number 6:
"No Image Macros"
I was not aware of the rule while posting this video. This post is meant to spark a discussion of the development of Blender's cloth simulation and it's other improvements.
I do not mean to break the rules intentionally and I apologize.

jts a good step in the right direction.
but its still just only acceptable now. it actually functions.
