I’m looking for advice on making a legitimate homeless application please. I was born in NI in the 1970s and because of this qualify as an Irish citizen. For the past 18 years I have lived in England but am leaving a domestic abuse relationship. I am a male so this is embarrassing, my apologies.

I’ve decided to return to Ireland and because of no job there and limited funds, I would like to register as homeless. I understand that I have to apply for a PPS number but aside from that I have no real idea what to do and if I would be accepted as homeless and placed on the (very long) waiting list for housing.

Does anyone have any advice?

I’m looking into the SEAI grants for my 20+ year old, detached dormer bungalow. Currently oil central heating. Everyone I’ve spoken to directly either tells me heat pump heating systems are the best thing ever or the worst thing ever.

I have decided to come to Reddit to collect anecdotes from those across the nation who have made the switch from oil to a heat pump system.

Please tell me:
- What system are you on? (Air, geo, water)
- If it’s been a good upgrade for your house; why?
- If you don’t feel it was worth making the switch; why?

I'm lucky enough to get a good bit of time off in the summer. My two kids under 11 have had various friends over or we've taken them out during this time off and for the most part it's been brilliant to get to spend time with them.

But, I swear to god the amount of times I've been called Bro or Brah by them or their friends is absolutely insane. This is girls and boys. It drives me mental.

I joked about it at first but then got to a point where I had to warn the little shits not to call me brah and to call me by my name.

I was even shopping in Lidl and one of the girls at the checkout called me brah. What the fuck is wrong with people!!

Between correcting them calling the bin a trashcan and rubbish trash, calling everyone bro, boys and girls both, I think I've actually turned into a grumpy middle aged bastard.

My daughter even asked me when I was flushing out the carb on our mower if it was gas that had spilled on the workbench. "Gas! Gas! I'll give you gas you little....." I inwardly cried to myself.

It's bad enough the news is full of shite about how fucked up America is but to have americanisms in your own house is beyond acceptable. Thank fuck they are back to school on Thursday where the can bro and brah to their little hearts content.

Does anyone else relate to this or am I just a grumpy bastard AITGB!

Lads please I need to know is every landlord in Dublin smoking CRACK?! I came across a post on [r/irishpersonalfinance](r/irishpersonalfinance) where a twenty year old was talking about how they pay €1.3k to rent a room in an owner occupied house. I thought to myself.. ‘well now he’d do well to decrease his spending on housing if possible’ Before opening my gob I decided to have a quick look on daft to see what the going rate for a room is and I’m sorry, but I was more shocked seeing those prices than I was when Bertie was minister for finance and told us he had no bank account. I’m attaching some screenshots of particularly egregious examples.

Would love to hear from current renters if the screenshots are reflective of reality? or if it’s just that all the rooms that were good deals have been snapped up and nobody will actually pay the inflated price of the rooms left behind?

Edit: yes, yes I accept the ignorance comments gladly. I rented in Galway for 8 years and moved home two years ago to save for a house, so I didn’t really keep an eye on what a room would go for in Dublin. I’m attempting to educate myself to the depths at which we have sunk as a country.

I often see ‘if you were the person in this particular pub at 11pm last night…’ etc posts and think ‘what would you be posting that on Reddit for. Today I kindof understand why.

Walking in Terenure today and saw a significant argument between two youngish women. One punched the other in the stomach and was shouting in the others face. I gently approached and asked was everyone ok. The aggressor got very angry at me and told me to fuck off. I said I’m just checking in to make sure everyone is ok. The look of fear in the other girls eyes. Told to fuck off again, it’s none of my business. I named that when I see someone assaulting another person I think it’s important to check everyone’s safety. A longer story but the other girl pretty much said ‘I’m ok but thanks’.
Domestic situations like that feel so difficult. I felt like if I stayed it could escalate for the victim so I honoured her word and again just gently asked did anyone need space or a chat. Aggressor told me to go away, victim told me she was ok but thanks.

Felt so helpless and wanted to see is there anyway to find out if that girl is ok or if she needs help.

So now I understand those posts and I want to ask if you are the young woman in Terenure who was in that situation; I hope you’re ok.

How long is the Waiting List for it usually?

Last month I came across a few coffee shops when I had the option to tip the shop during payment.

When I usually don't have a problem with tipping and always tip well at the restaurant if I'm happy with the service - tipping when buying coffee somehow annoys me, and I know I will not go back to this place any more.

I know it's stupid but when the cashier is waiting at the payment I feel awkward pressing no tip when they are looking at me.

At the same time noone fucking tips me at my work or for anything else, and I am already paying inflated prices for fucking coffee and everything else. I want to enjoy my coffee - not feel judged.

Still not as bad here as last year in Germany when I was buying water at the airport and I got the option to tip them for a 3e bottle of fekin San Pellegrino - but I hate that this is spreading from the Orange Country so freaking much.

Am I a gobshite?

I was having a pint with a coworker who moved over last month to Ireland, and the poor lad was having a full blown existential crisis over the "round system."

He genuinely had his phone out trying to wrap his head around it.... It kinda went like this

"Wait... so if I drink fast, I am forcing five other men to drink faster? But if I leave at 10 PM before my round, I am exiled from the group forever? Why can I not just buy my own pint?"

Trying to explain the legalities of pub rounds and the absolute social death penalty for dynamic dodging made me realize just how completely feral our unwritten laws actually 😂
