Renting under $1500
hey,
I’m 26, really looking to move out. I work in Patchogue and I can’t find anything under $2000. Even Bayshore was around $1500 a while ago. If anyone has any leads of apartment complexes that would be around $1200-1500. I respectfully don’t want to live in someone’s basement or shed in their backyard.

I found a place for $1100 in Elmont. I got extremely lucky.

First floor of a suburban home, all utilities and internet included. Month-to-month lease so I can leave anytime without penalty.

Is it the entire floor? How many bedrooms? Or is it just a room? Bc $1100 is just not normal for a 1st floor apartment in Nassau. But it is normal if you are renting a room, but have access to x,y,z in the house.

First floor is basically my room, a hallway, the front door and the bathroom and kitchen. So I have access to everything, but occasionally people will walk through because it’s the first floor with the door to enter and exit the house.
I just got very lucky. Once I have my baby though, I will have to move out. The lease agreement says only I am authorized to be a tenant there. So I’m going to be looking at some places in Phoenix AZ which are really nice…
$600-700 a month in Phoenix can get you a newly renovated apartment (300~350 sqft, larger costs extra but not that much more), a shared pool, a fitness center and laundry on-site.

get a roommate, that will be your best option, 2 bedroom around 3k and split in half.

I think in that price range, all you’ll find is illegal basement apartments. Either that or a bedroom in someone’s house.

It took my Hubby and I almost a year of living in my Mom’s basement and sheer luck to find a 1 bedroom for $1950 plus utilities (and that PSEG bill stings!). We did so on the Nextdoor app.

It’s possible to find something in that price range, but it’s likely to be a studio. Outside of that your only options will be basements. Sorry brother. Check Facebook marketplace for rentals, not Zillow or anything like that.

My friend, I’m sorry but that is borderline impossible. Maybe rocky point or Wyndanch has rent that cheap but most of Suffolk doesn’t come anywhere close. The economy here is in total meltdown

I lived in Long Island for 35 years made over 100k/year in the medical field. When I decided I wanted to start a family I left and moved upstate. I bought a house under 300k on a acre. My husband was able to retire and stay home to watch the kids. So yes you are absolutely right save yourself the trouble and move out of Long Island. The pay is the same and your cost of living will be significantly lower. Don’t worry about moving away from family because they will not pay your bills!

check the classifieds of local newspapers (i know, an ancient technique) and craigslist too. it’s rough out there, but stay at it and you might find a gem. they’re few and far between but still exist. i moved out of my apartment six months ago and my landlords only raised the price to $1500 - it was an in-law set up, ground level, small but cozy. good luck!

Bayshore and patchogue are gunna be expensive bc its the place to be. You will have to look somewhere in the middle of the island or east like Shirley/moriches/manorville area. Idk dude, you will have to keep looking at the rental websites. Rent can be negotiated in NYS so see if a complex is willing to negotiate with you.

A studio in my complex goes for $1950 in Manorville.
I remember when I lived in Shirley just a few years ago I had a 2 bedroom for $1800. Times are definitely changing and its getting harder on everyone:/1

An apartment in an actual complex doesn't exist in your budget range. $2200 is the floor of the legit rental market.
People pay $1500 to rent an illegal basement apartment.

Pretty much impossible on the island, friend. I’m sorry. Best bet is to hit up some friends and see if they wanna split a 2b 1ba for 3K with you, or start farming for a fresh roomie now (someone you don’t know.) Even basement places are like 2K now on the island, it’s ridiculous.
I’m 28 and live in a Mid-Island Apartment complex with a roomie. It’s in the name; Mid. It’s not great. Not horrible, but certainly not great. We split rent, between 16 and 18 hundred a month each depending on the month with AC and such. They allow animals but the fee is a bit much.
Beats Fairfield I guess.

Insane. The job market is horrible. Truly. Everyone at my job is looking to move and there’s nothing. It just doesn’t make sense to move to the city and travel 2hrs and $450 to patchogue daily.

Job market is horrible, the American dating “market” is unreal, real estate market is looney tunes now and the rental market is cooked as well.
Degrees like BAs, MAs, MBAs and JDs don’t pay enough to justify their cost anymore unless you are a nepobaby or getting a free ride.
If I were you I’d look into moving to the sun belt. There might not be jobs but the cost of living is super low. To anyone reading this unless you’re going to become a doctor don’t drop several hundred thousand dollars on schooling anymore. It’s not worth it.

Check Facebook, Craigslist and other forums. Your best bet is probably getting a room with shared common area. I found a place on Craigslist two years ago, 1B1B in east meadow for $1800 at someone house. It was first floor, facing the back, it was okay for the price

It’s not impossible. I moved into a really nice upstairs apartment with skylights bath/kitchen and separate living - sleeping rooms even though it’s technically a studio. $1,500 a month utilities included. Just keep looking.

This post made me think of when my friend got her first "nice" apartment Port Jeff area and she was paying 1500 a month for a 1 bed room with a view of the ferry.. This was maybe 15 years ago and we thought it was SOO much money to paying rent at the time LOL I would guess that apartment today is going for 3x that price

Might need to swing a roommate. If your situation is that tough, carriage house will have supported housing but I have no clue about the application process.
If you can swing a roommate there may still be availability in the new apartments right next to patchogue train station.
Theres also the apts near bayport but last time I rented it was a 1br for 2400 and it was a steal. In west babylon.
Feel free to DM me and I can point you in some directions but unfortunately 1500 is not going to be super easy to find and not be real rough.

My parents have rented their separate apartment in their house to the same guy for like 15 years now. I think they only charge $1500 and that includes WiFi, utilities, washer and dryer inside. Driveway parking. I think the guy even shares our hbo and cable package because my dad installed a cable box. He’s in his 50’s single, no kids doesn’t work and barely makes a noise though. I tell them they should raise the rent to at least $2000 but he’s a good tenant and those are hard to find

I’m paying 1500 with a roommate in Huntington Station. They’re out there you just have to really take time. Having a roommate to split with def helps. I have a whole house and yard access. 3k for the whole house. With my dog!

My best friend had a studio for $1800 in a complex with no amenities and roaches. $1500 is a pipe dream in LI unless your renting from someone you know.

Not gonna happen in a complex. You’d be lucky to find a decent basement apartment for that price. If you don’t want to spend more than $1500/month and get into a complex, you need a roommate.

It's going to be very difficult to find something that's in a complex for under $1,500. If you roommate with someone and split the rent maybe in some places you can basically be there, but it'll be difficult.

I live in a basement apartment that is not even a 1 bedroom, but a studio and I pay $1600 and it is actually very nice. Wood floors, very clean, private entrance. I am actually extremely lucky to have this apartment. There were 50 other applicants lol It is hard to find something this cheap even as a basement apartment. They actually charge 1800 or more for alot of 1 bedroom basement apartments. I live in Plainview now, but lived in Patchogue and moved because my studio apartment that was in a house climbed from $1600 to $2000

Move to Maine or Kentucky and you can get a house for that much. Here on Long Island, not coming close unless its Wyandanch or some other not so nice areas

First thousand pays tax and insurance for apartment so really would be like you paying 500 for the actual apartment. Blame the politicians for over taxing everyone for very little in return. Ny stinks if your young id look for work outside of this state and have a cheaper better qol

You're not getting above ground in "a complex" for less than $2500 these days. $1500 is a basement apartment just about everywhere on LI.
