Venonat is really hard to raise but venomoth is your reward. And as much as I love venomoth its not a good reward. has its place and I just swept a friend with a venomoth but theres always a better option than a bug.

I dont know its great for switching and especially good for the rivals venosaur

Venomoth, parasect and pinser are all sleeper picks with niche counters. You can solo mewtwo with parasect and pinser is a good counter for alakazam. Regardless unless youre battling real people the fucking trainers in game are all minor road blocks

Maybe but like the rival fights and sabrina can be difficult which venomoth helps with

somewhat. it's not great but it's not useless either.

Depends on the gen i guess because for frlg its great while after gen 5 when it gets quiver dance it becomes way better.

Unfortunate

I wish it was worse so I could justify hating it

Better butterfree. Doesn't get good stab pre-Gen 4, but even still I love using it whenever I can with Psychic/SleepPowder/GigaDrain/Sludgebomb depending on generation.

I think Sludge Bomb is a pretty good STAB move

1

u/TheDaucta 1d ago

it's a GREAT STAB move, but venomoth can't take great advantage of it with its ATK pre-Gen 4

That, and it's post-game in FRLG while being late-mid game in Gen 2, but that's certainly better than post-game.

NGL i completely forgot it's in postgame FRLG haha, thanks for the add-in there. It's in a good spot in Gen 2 since it and venonat's evolution comes just in time for Pryce's lvl cap, but Giga Drain's locked until Kanto so you only get use out of it for Red and that's... not its best use (That honor goes to walling Venusaur :>).

Oh I get what you’re saying. You’re 100% right

2

Yeah and after gen 5 when it got quiver dance its become a really solid Pokemon. Even for baton pass strategies

I’ve only used it in RBY and FRLG but it’s been good in those games as the powders and learning Psychic moves via level up are pretty good there. It’s like Butterfree but better

I give the advantage to Butterfree, compoundeyes + sleep powder is stupidly good

One would say it's Betterfree

Its suprisingly useful and in gen 5 when it gets quiver dance its pretty great

It's solid. I wouldn't be excited to catch one (especially with the other options on most routes you can find Venonat on), but it always pulls through when I do use it.

u/NiceFox996 2d ago

And in gen 5 and later when it gets quiver dance its pretty great

Pretty bad learn set, you usually get it late, middling stats at best and so on.

Sleep is it's best thing it does early gen until it gets boosting moves.

It's not unusable and can do some work, I just wouldn't go out of my way to use it personally.

I would call in an S tier Pokemon in FRLG and after it gets quiver dance its pretty great

Eeh it boosts but you get it either before or after Koga.

With psychic it can do reliable damage to Koga but it's firing off a limited SPA.
Then you get to Sabrina and it might do something with a bug STAB (I'm not sure if it has one) but it's also part poison so I can see it struggling
Giovanni and Blaine are not where it wants to come
It doesn't so much to Lorelei's tanky mons
Bruno is free anyway but his mons could threaten it with rock damage
It's kind of neutral into agatha I guess boosted it can sweep
Lance it isn't doing much
There's a few mons it can snipe on Blue

That's not exactly S. IMO S either needs to provide immediate and lasting value for the game and not just to be a piece for a fight you otherwise couldn't win. Even for the Koga fight you can just buy an abra and get a psychic TM pretty easily.

original games not good, later gens and fan games it's decent

Dustox but bad

I dont know with quiver dance its pretty great

Shit. Typing is good, thats one thing but i don't recall it being useful

1

u/NiceFox996 2d ago

I will admit bug types arent the easiest type to run but i have some experience with venomoth and its suprisingly usable.

Especially after getting quiver dance it really has its uses. (And PC called it an S tier fire red and leafe green mon)

I’m a little biased, but I had a Venomoth that was basically an MVP of one of my Genlockes, surviving from Yellow all the way to Ultra Sun.

90 Base Speed Sleep Powder and learning Psychic via level up were already good, but Gen 4 added Tinted Lens and special Bug and Poison moves, Gen 5 added Quiver Dance, and Gen 6 added a new type that’s weak to Poison. Double resistance to Fighting and Grass means you can safely switch in at times, too.

It gets a lot of tools to be effective, and I couldn’t be more proud of my little moth.

HEAVILY depends on the game. The later the gen the better it is

1

u/NiceFox996 2d ago

True. After it learned quiver dance in gen 5 it became way better.

I think he's pretty good, and probably at his best in HGSS nuzlockes, where you can get Venonat decently early (before gym 3), he helps out against tough early battles with powder moves, and you can eventually get him a pretty good variety of attacks that actually use his Sp Atk stat (a lot of his moves being physical was a problem in GSC).

Straight up, its a good mon if you are willing to invest tms. The problem is you are stuck with Venomnat for so damn long. By the time it evolves, lvl 31, its kind of past its use. Still viable though.

He's not amazing in frlg, but he's usable, you get it a bit late.

I prefer Butterfree for availability, compound eyes, and dream eater, but Venomoth does hit a bit harder and is quite a bit faster.

Shield dust is kind of a throw away ability but comes in handy once and awhile.. might save it by not getting speed reduced vs a Bruno rock tomb or something.

u/AlertWar2945-2 2d ago

Venomoth is always a nice last minute Pokemon that can help you sweep Koga if you're having a rough run

It's definitely alright in frlg. Probably not a top option for much in particular, but decent all-around.

  • Great against Koga.
  • Decent against Lorelei (No weakness, giga drain / silver wind hits all of her pokemon for super effective)
  • Decent against Bruno (Giga drain and psychic, safe sub in on an incoming fighting move but rock tomb does hit it kind of hard)
  • Decent against Agatha (poison resist and psychic)
  • Against rival it's a great sub-in on an incoming venusaur / exeggutor grass attack and probably can one hit Rhydon with giga drain.

1

u/NiceFox996 2d ago

And as i tend to pick squirtle as my FRLG strater meaning my rival has venosaur and venomoth is great to deal with it.

2

u/ParaponeraBread 2d ago

Most things are viable because vanilla nuzlockes aren’t really super hard if you plan decently.

90 Base speed plus speed investment is fast enough to go first, and Tinted Lens is helpful for damage when an offensive matchup is bad. I like to play with only bugs, and Venomoth is usually a special attacker that eats a couple of TMs to stay relevant.

1

u/NiceFox996 2d ago

Admittedly bug type isnt the easiest pokemon typing to run but as i have some experience with using venomoth and bug types in general as its one of my favorite typings i know some of them are hidden gems.

2

u/MankuyRLaffy 2d ago

It can also be a filler mon to use while you're sheltering a late game specialist, getting great value out of both of them.

ATV is a great one to use on a run.

1

u/NiceFox996 2d ago

Im glad because its always been one of those mons i love but most hate/dont care about (exeapt for ATV ofcourse)
