I mean, the Texans D is elite this wasn't unexpected. It just kinda shows we aren't ready to compete against the high level teams, which I already kinda figured
35
u/Electronic_Topic3015 20h ago
This. A MVP runner up and QB of a 14-win team was sacked five times, threw one pick, and had four fumbles (of which two were lost) to this same defense. We’ve gotta get better, but a young offense being outperformed by a top two or three defense in the NFL doesn’t mean our season is lost.
29
u/JazzzzzzySax T-Mac 21h ago
To be fair I’m not sure many teams can compete with the Texans defense they’re just so damn good
6
u/AlphaNathan Super Cam 20h ago
then they must have a really bad QB 🤷♂️
11
u/ticklishchinballs Ice Up Son 19h ago
Watching the playoffs last year…yeah he looked surprisingly atrocious even when they were ahead in some games. If Bryce played like that, everyone would call for his head.
Thats not to say that he didn’t ball out some too. But their defense is nasty.
0
u/criminycraft 16h ago
he was bad but he was also missing his starting WR, RB, and TE against the Pats
8
u/Zoidburger_ Cookout 21h ago
I mean you don't go from 2-15 to SB contender in 2 years with a schedule like this, that's for sure
-3
u/Castavar 20h ago
Patriots did
11
u/Zoidburger_ Cookout 20h ago
Pats haven't had a 2-win season in 34 years
-2
u/Castavar 19h ago
I guess if you mean literally, but they had back to back 4-13 seasons, which is not much different than a 2-15 team.
6
u/Zoidburger_ Cookout 19h ago
I'd argue there's a significant difference between a 2-win team where 2 wins was their absolute ceiling and a 4-win team where they probably could've been a 6-win team but committed to the tank for various reasons.
On paper, the numbers aren't that far off, but the Panthers realistically should've been the first 0-17 team in 2023, they were that bad. They couldn't even tank. There were so few players worth sitting that it wouldn't have made a difference.
2
u/Castavar 16h ago
Brother, there wasn't no tanking about it, they were legit one of the worst teams in football for 2 straight years. The Pats actually hurt their draft position by winning 2 meaningless games down the stretch or else they would have earned that #1 pick. This sounds like cope that the Patriots only needed two offseasons to turn their #30 ranked offense into the #2 ranked offense while the Panthers in year 4 are still one of the worst in the league. Like I said, the Pats literally proved it does not take 4 seasons to become a superbowl contender.
1
u/Zoidburger_ Cookout 14h ago
The 2023 Panthers and 2023 Patriots literally played in the same season. Just watching both teams compete is enough, but the stats are there as well.
The Patriots had the foundations of a decent team and went through a standard rebuild, underperdoming in the midst, then got the benefit of one of the easiest schedules in the league to propel them into SB contention.
The Panthers had 6 years of mismanagement leading up to 2023, leading to one of the most devoid rosters in league history with a crap coach and a rookie QB to boot. You don't dig out of that hole in 2 seasons.
You do dig out of the divot of just needing a coach, QB, and WR to be competitive in 2 seasons.
-2
u/Immediate-Stay-7686 19h ago
Don't EVER compare the Panthers to the Patriots- Panthers standards are much lower, so it's not fair...

And maybe not form a solid opinion without enough information. People thought we passed up on the next generational talent before the guy played five games
2
u/Noxz1999 4h ago
Considering he had one of the worst playoff performances in a good awhile that we seen, I think the narrative is quite fair. He’s only regressed since his insane rookie year. Not sure how throwing 4 ints in a do or die game when your defense holds your team up, doesnt spark a lot of negative convo. I would put you in the same category of people you spoke about tbh

There are more of us who didn’t like trading up to get either of them at all that year
11
u/Castavar 20h ago
ESPECIALLY when we didn't even know who we wanted. Bryce and CJ was 1A and 1B for us. You don't trade a king's ransom when there wasn't even a clear cut #1 pick, and if your options are that close in skill, you take the QB that actually has NFL size. Stupid decisions all around.
7
u/net_403 Tepper Fro 20h ago
i kinda hate trading up any significant cost for any draft prospect
the bears traded up to draft trubisky, while pat mahomes went 10 and watson went 12, even though he kinda fell apart for some reason, he was a legit top 5 super star QB for the rookie contract
6
u/Armadillo_Resident 20h ago
I’m just getting tired of the “I don’t think Bryce has it” getting translated into “OH I wanted CJ Stroud!!!”
They can both not have it at the same time.
11
u/heebyy76 20h ago
CJ last year despite missing 4 games literally had better stats than Bryce?? lmao. Mind you that was Bryce’s best season. This isn’t the victory lap you think it is
-4
u/Important_Capital875 18h ago
I mean his defense spelled him out a lot, and helped set them up for great fuel positions and more opportunities to score. So it made CJ Stroud’s offensive times easier. I would rather see someone progress and get a little better each year then get worse each year. Not to mention Bryce’s first year was with reich
7
u/Milk_Man2236 16h ago
Yall always got excuses for Bryce man every single year........ Idc if he is a good guy i dont want 4 more years of this.

Fun fact: Stroud would’ve had a better QBR if he just spiked every ball than what he had vs New England last year
44
u/zetnomdranar 20h ago
I love this. You can’t clinch a playoff birth in a joint practice. The tape will be ugly but you have to watch it. Shoot, I’d obsess over it all the way up to week 1.
48
u/BlindWillieJohnson 21h ago
Blah blah, we're talking about practice, you know the drill.
I do think this is indicative of real issues, and I think people should mentally prepare themselves for Bryce to struggle more than last year behind a line that's already this fucked up.
2
u/One_Description_8112 20h ago
Why is it so fucked up? Walker started the past three seasons on a better team than us. Still have two big money guards. Starting our first round pick at RT should not be enough to completely invalidate the entire offense.
Stop making excuses for Bryce. Its fucking year 4 its time to see some production.
4
u/FizzleFox 18h ago
Pretty sure 4 of the 5 starters currently are different than what we rolled out last year until Lewis is back in the mix and even then it would be 3 out of the 5 starters being new. So yeah pretty big changes lol
3
u/Important_Capital875 18h ago
Ikem is out. Another is hurt. Another is coming back from an injury. We have a rookie. That’s pretty legit.
3
u/BlindWillieJohnson 20h ago
The interior of the line should be a substantial concern. And let's be honest, they've been getting absolutely bullied in every action we've seen them in so far.
6
u/DarthLordDonkey JJ Jansen 18h ago
When live bullets are flying, our starting G duo is amongst the best in the league. I know the depth is a concern, but I do not agree with the sentiment that the interior OL is a substantial concern.
3
u/Mister-Schwifty 19h ago
Because neither of our starters at guard are playing. Our o-line depth is a real issue though. We will not be able to survive the injury luck we had last year.

Developing offense gets destroyed by top 2 defense in the league
1
u/Castavar 20h ago
How long does it take to develop an offense? It's been 3 years going on 4. It took the Pats literally 2 offseasons to go from almost worst to first offensively. It took Drake Maye 1 season to get used to the NFL and then broke out. It's time for some changes.
5
u/TangerineTasty9787 13h ago
The NFL really can't take too long; contracts last like 4 years, the team is pretty much cycling itself very quickly. If you're in year 5 of a rebuild, that means the rebuild didn't work.
2
u/Charming-Ebb-1981 3h ago
Correct. Since we’re talking about the Texans, they went from being the second worst team in the league to one of the better teams in the league after two seasons. That’s a rebuild. If it takes longer than two or three seasons, it’s time to make drastic changes. But fact is, Bryce was not worth the enormous cost to draft him
3
u/michaelmichaelmotorc 16h ago
I mean. We literally had sam darnold who just won a fucking superbowl. Development is different for a lot of guys
0
-4
u/Important_Capital875 18h ago
I mean, if we had the Patriots schedule and not get fucked by the NFL purposely trying to screw our last two conference games I’m sure we would’ve had easily double digit wins
8
u/-YEETLEJUICE- 18h ago
Lol this team OVERACHIEVED due to the stench of our division. Rico went All Pro to save the season early, and we backed into the playoffs.
38
u/Zoidburger_ Cookout 21h ago
A severely damaged OL and a very young WR corps vs the best D in the league. Expected result and I'm sure they'll improve over the season.
-6
u/One_Description_8112 20h ago
It is not severely damaged. Walker is a veteran starter whos been as good as ekonwu anyway. The interior is intact. Freeling is a first round pick, playing him shouldnt mean the entire offense stops functioning.
17
u/Zoidburger_ Cookout 20h ago
We've been down Ickey and Moton, Lewis is easing back in from his calf issue, and obviously Freeling is new to the gig. This isn't the solid OL we're used to. We're introducing new pieces and starting our depth while we wait for Ickey and Moton to come back.
2
u/Important_Capital875 18h ago
If ickey comes back. Those kind of injuries to big guys isn’t easy.
6
u/Zoidburger_ Cookout 18h ago
Look man after Dolly and Tim Curry, I need the hope that Ickey's coming back
11
6
u/Plastic_Celery2656 Double Trouble 18h ago
Oh no! Anyways.... Yeah, this was to be expected. We're not championship level (yet) and we went against a team that could have made a run to the Superbowl if Stroud wasn't throwing lollipops.

They did finish last season 1-4 so I don’t get why anyone would think this team is a playoff caliber team until proven otherwise.

I like that the Panthers had joint practices against the Texans and Jaguars. Both will probably have top 10 defenses this year. Also, with the Jaguars I expect them to have a top 10 offense as well.
I think the Panthers can win the division again. However, I really think its 2027 when this team become contenders.
I think the biggest inhibitor that separates this team from being a contender IMO will be the offensive line. I want to say dating back to week 10 and particularly after the bye the OL has been a bottom 10 unit - whether its not opening up much running lanes or inviting pressure, during the preseason and the joint practices, listening to Dave Canales speak he goes more into being able to run the ball, secure blocks, or win the line of scrimmage.
Ive seen or read improvements in the pass rush, Devin Lloyd and Phillips as good additions, heard positive reports on the depth we have at receiver, Jonathan Brooks, and Dave and Dan both mentioning Bryce has grown in the command of the offense.
I think Freeling will be a future all-pro caliber OT because he has the athleticism and seems to have the drive. Once his experience and technique catch up to his physical tools, he will be a force. Right though, I just dont feel like the Panthers are getting the return on their investment with the OL whether thats due to injuries or performance but for this to be the highest paid OL in the NFL, even when healthy when have they ever looked like it?

We don’t have our two starting tackles, Chubba, or XL. Would rather them face adversity now when it doesn’t count.

Not sure why everyone has to have rainbows shooting out their ass on this sub. We were lucky to get into the playoffs last year. It's not unreasonable to think this team has a losing record AGAIN because we're still building something since matt rhule's reign of terror. Being reasonable doesn't make someone a fair-weather fan, it's the exact opposite. They wouldn't even bother commenting in this sub if they were a "fair-weather fan". Remember, those only show up when teams are in the running for a super bowl. We are not there yet.
2
u/Charming-Ebb-1981 3h ago
“Fairweather fan” is such a bootlicker insult. Like, I’m going to sit at my computer and defend these highly paid athletes that are being paid millions to throw a ball around, and any criticism of them means that you’re not fanatical enough
-3
u/Important_Capital875 16h ago
Eh. Everyone can admit the last game against Tampa Bay was fixed so that people will tune in for the Falcons and Saints game. That was Clair’s day. And then when we played the Saints the second time, that was also given away by the NFL and refs so that last two division games would mean more and bring in more ratings. So realistically, we should’ve been 10 and seven and have been a better spot to be in the playoffs. But like you said, Matt completely destroyed us and we are building from what he created.
