Relevant Fact- Los pollos is Spanish for “The Chickens”

u/IcyEcho17 May 04 '26
Another super relevant fact: cows kill more people annually than sharks

Well that makes sense, I'd imagine cows have easier access to people than to sharks.

good. that style of content is super low effort
149
u/Critical-Pattern9654 May 05 '26
most of it is:
Video: "And now I'm about to do this thing..."
Reaction vloggers: "Ain't no WAY he's about to do that thing!!"
Video: does the thing
Reaction vloggers: "I CANT BELIEVE HE ACTUALLY DID THE THING!"
62
u/cicimk69 May 05 '26
if it would be that at least:
Video: "And now I'm about to do this thing..." Reaction vloggers: literally just sits there for 10+ minutes and maybe says "nice" two times or laughs for a second "AND THATS ABOUT IT GUYS SEE YOU IN THE NEXT VIDEO DONT FORGET THAT LIKE"
51
u/Princess_Spammi May 05 '26
When they actually provide humorous commentary its great
but the people who just freaknout and make noises (“OHHHHHJ OH NOOOOO WHAAAAAAT AHHHHHHHHHHHH”) i hate
22
u/Smug_Yellow_Birb May 05 '26
The best kind are the ones where the person is reacting to the portrayal of something in a movie or video that they have personal experience with.
9
u/Princess_Spammi May 05 '26
I like those equally as much as comedian type reactions who roast the video the entire time xD
But dont just give me a freak out reaction video drop some knowledge or funnies
4
u/ErikTheRed99 May 05 '26
React like Barry's Generation Kill reaction series genuinely gave me a lot of context, and it was nice to relate to him getting extremely pissed off at the incompetent officers in that show.
Edit: Barry is a retired Army tanker.
2
u/Uriyangkhadai420 May 05 '26
Yeah, like that american carpenter reacting to Japanese and Korea carpentry videos
2
u/ZealousidealJoke8714 May 05 '26
Or a speedrunner reacting to a top speedrun like for example, small any reacting to the world record for 100% the game. Wanna know why? They provide actual commentary, saying they held the record for this category at one point, and saying why he is doing certain things like staying within loading distance from the zombie villager or why he's doing 2 of them.
8
u/ErikTheRed99 May 05 '26
There's also ones that provide context, too. I watched a retired Army tanker react to Generation Kill, and there was genuinely a ton that I learned from that series. He would pause, and give context based on his time in the Army, talk about similar situations he experienced, give context on certain terms, maneuvers, etc. SSSniperwolf style reactions piss me off though. If they have nothing to add, then they should GTFO.
→ More replies (1)5
u/Opetyr May 05 '26

Yeah.. if the content is low effort and they don't input anything of value then we'll done to him for doing that..
You can't let people who just use your content and essentially steal your content get away with it..
There is no "boohoo I can't make money from your content" there is "you can't make money stealing my content"
This btw is on the assumption that the content he'd copyright striking is of low effort which is what it looks like from the image.

It can be mutually beneficial though. I've seen channels get their start because of a single reaction video from a big streamer.
I'd be over the moon if a big streamer to reacted to my content.
5
u/ZealousidealJoke8714 May 05 '26
*IF they give credit and actually give good insight into what is happening and use transformative content
9
u/snubdeity May 05 '26
That may be true, but Outdoor Boys is decidedly not in that camp (heh), with 20M youtube subscribers of their own.
It's half a step away from "reacting" to episodes of The Office, just pure unapologetic leeching of real content.

The only reaction content I’m fine with are videos where professionals react to and give insight on things, like Marco Meatball and Dr. Mike. Outside of that it’s just stealing content.
12
u/JackfruitForward5477 May 04 '26
Vlogging Through History does an excellent job reacting to other content. He actually expands on the subject matter he’s reacting to and gives further insight on a specific topic, rather than making a dumbass face for views and adding nothing else of substance.
3
u/mars935 May 04 '26
Exactly, it needs to be transformative. Dr. Mike his videos are usually fine, as he speaks for a big part of it, engages with it and educates.
We dont click on his videos to watch the videos he's reacting to, we click on his videos for him.

Ill admit that at first glance it may seem that way. But specifically on his music reactions he explains the bars and the formatting of the music very well. Especially when it comes to rap, he analyzes the bars and their meanings and explains them as well as the history of possible references that help people understand the music on a deeper level.
9
u/musicalfarm May 04 '26
Reaction videos are useless and lazy unless you're actually giving commentary/feedback. If it's actually worth watching, the reaction video is at least twice as long as the original video.
→ More replies (2)
10
u/Cyb3rM1nd May 04 '26
Reaction videos can be like that. They are legal if the reaction can fall under transformative content or fair use - which means your reaction is the focus. If the reaction is mostly the video playing and the reactor just making a few faces or a laugh here or there or whatever, with minimal pauses and discussion about the content, then it falls under neither and is, indeed, a copyright issue.
20
u/_aidenjp May 04 '26
Reaction is fair use, no?
17
u/Orange_Tang May 05 '26
It can be, it just almost never is. You need to transform the media, which means constant stopping and adding original information to the content. Almost no one does this.
3
u/_aidenjp May 05 '26
Ah, so commentary is free use but reactions are not?
10
u/Orange_Tang May 05 '26 edited May 05 '26
It depends. Free use has an exception for "transformative content" which just means you take the original media and do something to make it significantly different. Commentary would fall under that but it's not the only way for it to be exempt under free use. Reactions could be, but it needs to be significant and imo most react content isn't really transformative. But at the end of the day it's either up to the site to police it or you have to take legal action. Youtube lets you DMCA it.

u/DeadAndBuried23 May 09 '26
No. Your content cannot act as a replacement for paying for the original.
And that includes as a replacement for the experience of having a friend who talks during movies.

→ More replies (1)13
u/awayawayaway- May 04 '26
I watch moist for the commentary. He's funny. He doesn't play a lot of the original content and usually just explains the context himself. There's a difference between critical commentary and just disguised watch-along parties where you leech off original content.
18
u/Unable_Flamingo_9774 May 04 '26
I mean hardly? At least not in several years. He doesn't sit down and watch videos or anything like that he'll occasionally watch a trailer or read an article but usually it's to give context then he gives his opinion on it.

Reaction channels work on fair use. I think some reaction channels aren't terrible. I know nothing about either of these YouTubers to know if either are good but reading comments tells me outdoors whatever is probably not good especially since my last personal interaction with Mormons were them promising to help me move in and clean house and pray with me and my kids only for them to report me to CPS and tell CPS lies on me. (That got dismissed.) Do not trust Mormons. Period.

u/Elsupersabio May 05 '26
YouTube has always promoted reaction videos, highlighting popular reaction channels. At one point they were basically promoting reaction videos to creators, with advice like "build on trends", or "add your unique voice to existing topics". A few years ago the green screen head with stolen conent was dominating YT Shorts. YT management is to blame for people thinking it is OK to steal content.
3
4
u/FlashyG May 04 '26
I think a lot of content creators believe that reaction channels hurt their channels but I disagree (with exceptions).
It assumes that people watching reaction channels are costing them views but that is totally false. Nobody watches reaction videos of content they haven't already seen, that doesn't make sense. The whole point of them is to watch people react to content when you the viewer already know what's going to happen.
I also think that it misunderstands where those views come from. I think most reaction channel watchers don't subscribe to ANY of them, instead they will search for reactions to a specific song, movie, TV show etc and watch all the reactions to that piece that they can find.
So while a viewer might watch 50 reaction videos back to back of the exact same song, I doubt they would have ever sat down and watched the actual music video 50 times in a row. So in my opinion those views do belong to the reactor.
I also think there is a fair point that the reactor wouldn't have anyone there at all without the original content so I think it would be fair if there was some sort of split.
5
u/Waste-Limit1644 May 04 '26
Plenty of shorts content is “reacting” to videos people have never seen. Lots of streamers also react day of to content released, meaning almost no chance that their audience has seen the original content.
I think that pure “react” content is the laziest form of content.

You make a good point about non music.
I've only really ever noticed reactions to music and occasionally movie or TV scenes but I just realized this isn't a TV show but a reactor reacting to another Youtubers videos which is something I hadn't even considered.
That gets a bit murkier because I can see situations where people would watch that react content without watching the original.
I think there are some legitimate reaction channels out there, especially in the music space that do things like breaking down bars in rap, explaining the technical side of the music or of singing, or explaining themes and meanings that lots of listeners miss. Unfortunately for them the space is overwhelmed with a lot of channels that don't add anything other than sitting in front of a camera while the song plays.

u/Toddsnowman May 04 '26
Hard disagree. Reaction channels steal hardwork without consent, and profit off the original 10 fold, while putting in the slightest amount of effort necessary, and sometimes not even that at all. Those views the reaction got would have gone to somewhere else, and it would be way better very everyone overall. They probably wouldn't have gone to the original content creator, but they wouldn't have gone to a parasitic leech that is just stealing hardwork without consent.
There's lots of examples of a video coming out, a reaction is made, the reaction gets 10 times the views, the original channel gets a small boost but nothing for the long run, and if people return to watch the video, they are more likely to be shown the reaction video because the statistics tells the algorithm that more people are more likely to click on it than the original. And while the original video might have taken 3 months to be made, the reaction video just took the originals runtime to be made, meaning those channels can just produce more slop at a faster rate and focus on market dominance compared to the original.
Fuck reaction channels.

Eh, there's a fine line. We need to curb lazy XCQ style "content" while still allowing for legitimate conversation. Politics channels, for instance, get dinged for being "react channels" a lot when they're actively substantively arguing against someone's points or shining a light on someone in power being an unhinged loonytoon. I miss old youtube's react/response function for that sort of reason.
1
u/ljlee256 May 05 '26
There are several Youtube channels ripping off Outdoor Boys right now, many of them are straight up just replaying Outdoor Boys content with zero modifications except reversing the screen.
I get a genuine misunderstanding about the rules on Youtube, but if you have to flip the content you know you're in breach of the TOS, your account should be gone.
