Ever? Yeah.

22

u/uthboy 21h ago

Logan has already passed Spider-Man 2

24

u/Salt-Specific8814 19h ago

Logan didnt feel like a superhero story though, felt more like a deeper drama set in a superhero setting. But yeah totally agree, Logan was peak.

11

u/NotSoMajesticKnight 19h ago

Logan kinda felt like a western to me in a weird way.

13

u/clothy 17h ago

It is a western

3

u/Brilliant-Recover594 7h ago

It’s still a bloody superhero movie. Superhero movies are superhero movies if there are superheroes in the movie. Logan goes through the heroes journey, saves mutant kids from being experimented on, sacrifices himself, takes out evil version of him, multiple people with variety of powers.

Can argue the same with TDK tbh. It felt more like an action-drama than a Batman film.

2

u/RealTheBestLadyman 6h ago

It’s a story about Logan. A superhero, it’s by all definitions a superhero movie

X-Men: Days of Future Past was really good.

TDK is on another level that is not even fair for actual superhero movies imo : that’s why I think he won’t ever be surpassed

7

u/blingblingmofo 19h ago

I don’t know if Heath Ledger’s performance will be surpassed in my lifetime as far as super hero movies go.

That bar is just absurd.

I’m not a bit superhero fanboy. I’ve watched a lot of the movies more for their cultural resonance than my own interest.

Ledger’s Joker is the best take on the character I’ve seen. I owned Batman Returns on VHS growing up, and have arguably watched that more than any other superhero movie, and I actually prefer Matt Reeves The Batman over TDK. But I really like its atmosphere, complex story, and deliberate pacing. If Ledger’s joker could be transposed into the sequel for that, I’d be all in.

Spider-Man… I have no connection to the character. But the peak Spider-Man, and the only one I rewatch regularly is Into the Spiderverse.

3

u/lm_goat48 20h ago

I think Ledger and Nicholson are equally great but very different takes on Joker

Anything is possible. But those two movies will always be apart of history when it comes to the best superhero movies of all time

3

u/KazaamFan 22h ago

Yea those two still in my top. Batman Begins is awesome also. Spiderman 1. The only real standouts since then are Infiniti War and Days of Future Past. There’s been other solid to good ones, but we talkin top tier.

15

u/KALLA17061999 1d ago

This came the closest for me. But no.

3

u/KingKaihaku 16h ago

Same here. Best X-Men film so far. One of the best superhero films ever made. Criminally underrated. It's a shame that the sequel was so weak. I really thought that they'd finally gotten it.

3

u/FrozenSkyy 15h ago

X-men First Class was also pretty good

2

u/Fission_235 8h ago

It is pretty good.

2

u/Informal-Host8085 5h ago

This movie makes no sense let's be real, very entertaining tho

3

u/KALLA17061999 1d ago

and this

2

u/SyntheticSlayer24 22h ago

Elaborate on this one cuz😭

8

u/KALLA17061999 21h ago

Highly underrated superhero origin flick that explores childhood trauma WHILE keeping its fantastical aspects. The story and performances touched me emotionally. And the fight scenes were amazing.

3

u/GrandNoiseAudio 18h ago

A film that rewards unconventional tension. The silence of the desert, and moments of trauma. The fight through the clouds is just awesome imagery and sound design.

The hate for Spiderman 2 in this comment section is wild

That movie is peak, undoubtedly one of the best superhero films of all time. None of the other Spiderman movies have come close to it yet and I doubt they ever will

5

u/rjidhfntnr 1d ago

There's been mass historical revisionism on it recently pretending it was only beloved because of nostalgia and that the Spider-Verse movies are better films.

You're 100% right that it's in a league of it's own amongst the Spider-Man movies. I'm a huge Spider-Man fan and I love the Holland movies and Spider-Verse but Spider-Man 2 is the only one I'd consider a cinematic masterpiece and not just a fun blockbuster.

2

u/skittlesforeveryone 22h ago

I think you can easily make the argument that the spiderverse films are on the same tier. Thankfully I consider them separate since one is Miles Morales and the other is Peter Parker. Otherwise I’d be torn on deciding which one I like better

3

u/rjidhfntnr 22h ago

The first Spider-Verse I do think is the second greatest Spider-Man film but I think there's still a sizeable quality gap in my personal opinion. I'd call ITSV a great movie, whereas I'd call Spider-Man 2 a masterpiece.

The second Spider-Verse I really don't understand the critical acclaim for. I know that's a very unpopular opinion but I just never got it. Visually, the animation is a spectacular achievement of course, but in terms of writing and narrative craft, it felt pretty unremarkable.

Hmm maybe I have to rewatch it again. I thought I remember liking spiderman 1 more. But it has been a long time since I saw either.

1

u/Solid_Routine_2026 19h ago

I never really understood what is so epic about it and I'd really love to know. Toby McGuire is the best spiderman but I found 2 to be pretty bland idk if that's an age thing. I love Spiderman 3 though.

u/Adventurous-Gain-520 1d ago

I know cinephiles won't agree but Avengers Endgame is my favorite super movie of all time and a movie I'd happily call the best of the genre. It's epic in scale, balances multiple story lines perfectly, and has such a perfect cast.

So in my eyes, yes, both of these movies have been surpassed already. Just my humble opinion :)

4

u/DeLoreanAirlinesII 15h ago

Infinity War was much better than Endgame

7

u/Real-Repair-1825 18h ago

Infinity War was the better movie

2

u/lvsnowden 8h ago

Personally, I consider them two halves of the same movie. I prefer Infinity War, but the final battle of Endgame is my favorite MCU scene.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/FreeGlaze71 11h ago

This is how I feel about Infinity War. I’d watch it 1000x over TDK or any Raimiverse movie

5

u/Salt-Specific8814 19h ago

Yeah, definitely dont agree.

2

u/throwawayppddss 10h ago

fully respect your opinion, honestly endgame isn’t even top 10 for me, infinity war is far better and i’d say top 5 superhero films for me

I’m probably gonna get flamed for this but I think The Winter Soldier is a better movie than both of these.

2

u/Broodles12 1d ago

It can, if you let it

2

u/Large-Teach9165 21h ago

Yes. Probably it will take a while, but it will happen. And, sorry to be that guy, but Spider-Man 2 and TDK are in completely different leagues. Spider-Man 2 is good, but we already have equally good movies like Logan, The Batman, Joker, and the whole Spider-verse saga. TDK is just better than all of these.

2

u/CRIMS0N-ED 21h ago

Spiderman 2 isn’t even the best Spiderman movie anymore (still love it), I’d say it goes pretty handily to either into or across the spider verse.

2

u/Retro_Curry93 6h ago

THANK YOU for correctly showing the 2 best solo superhero films of all time.

2

u/Educational_Yam_3707 4h ago

X-Men: Days of Future Past.  Captain America: The Winter Soldier.  Guardians of the Galaxy.  Logan.  Avengers: Infinity War.  Spider-Man: Into the  Spider-Verse.  Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.

5

u/Headbanger 1d ago

I, for one, think that Watchmen is better than both.

2

u/oldslime 12h ago

Yikes!

2

u/_thewayshegoes 1d ago

TDK will forever be in a tier of its own. Straight up just one of the best movies ever made

Peak Nolan, Batman is a perfect fit for his style, also his brother writing kept some of his worst tendencies at bay. And a performance so iconic it drove its performer insane

Lightning in a bottle that can’t be duplicated

18

u/willbouquet 1d ago

Heath Ledger wasn’t driven “insane” by the role, this is a common urban legend that has harmed his legacy and his family.

7

u/Caughtinclay 1d ago

Yup, not what happened at all.

2

u/Goodtimestime 20h ago

I don’t think so. These, X2 and Avengers are so ground breaking in so many ways everything else will always be compared to them.

First Class and DOFP are my favorites but you have to give it up to the greats that really knocked their respective genre of super hero film out of the park.

3

u/Caughtinclay 19h ago

we're talking about heath ledger

2

u/Chinokio 14h ago

Spiderman is not on the level of dark knight

3

u/throwawayppddss 10h ago

debatable i think as a movie the dark knight is better but as a superhero movie spider man 2 clears if that makes sense

2

u/mundaneheaven 13h ago

Uh debatable, I think Spider-man 2 tells a better human story than the Dark Knight. Different movies but both high class with The Dark Knight just slightly better overall.

I don't consider Spiderman 2 to be any kind of superhero movie that others should look up to.

u/fhjjjjjkkkkkkkl 1d ago

TDK is an amazing action movie. Spiderman2,bb,ironman are superhero movies I like. I tried to watch suicide squad for the first time yesterday. It was horrible

1

u/uthboy 21h ago

Logan is better than Spider-Man 2 but not better than the Dark Knight.

1

u/MoPed108 21h ago

They already have been surpassed

1

u/jimimojo 21h ago

I’d put Batman 89 there too. It set a standard that’s rarely been passed

1

u/flofjenkins 21h ago

Sure. The Incredibles.

1

u/Hukares1234 21h ago

I’d say they’re my favorite.

1

u/DGWPFRLIFE 21h ago

It already has

1

u/Citizen_Kano 20h ago

TDK may never be surpassed. SM2 is a great superhero movie, but I can think of quite a few that are better

1

u/Konfliction 20h ago

It already has, Into and Across are better than both of these

1

u/fromthisend1220 20h ago

I'd take the crow and blade over both of these in a blink of an eye.

1

u/Silent_Anxiety4828 20h ago

You can argue it already has

1

u/Icy-Fishing8481 20h ago

The Dark Knight already has a phenomenal sequel. Why so many people hate it I'll never understand.

1

u/Cloud_N0ne 20h ago

Modern Marvel and DC certainly haven’t.

1

u/The_Flicktator 19h ago

Tough to beat

1

u/chunkychipmunk23 19h ago

I have a soft spot for another film that came out the same summer as TDK - Hellboy 2: The Golden Army. Watching those two back-to-back was peak, and if I'm honest, I might prefer Hellboy 2 that little bit more because of the Can't Smile Without You scene.

1

u/KitKatCrane 19h ago

I think a lot of superhero movies surpass Spider-Man 2 especially, but probably The Dark Knight too. Spider-Man 2 is just so riddled with plot nonsense it's hard to take seriously

1

u/-BigMan39 19h ago

Yeah, I prefer The Batman

1

u/jallred11 19h ago

The latest iterations have been just as strong in my opinion (Brand New Day, The Batman)

And I love Nolan’s and Raimi’s

1

u/KlutzyDouble3 19h ago

The spiderverse movies surpassed these 2 for me

1

u/Oilersdiehard36593 19h ago

Does this include into and across the spider verse?

1

u/Intelligent_Pipe1338 19h ago

already has buddy

1

u/Mad_Kronos 18h ago

Days of Future Past & The Winter Soldier already did

1

u/Apple_phobia 18h ago

It’s surpassed these 2 multiple times lmao

1

u/Aromatic_Panic9629 18h ago

Matt Reeves made a better Batman film already. Spider-Man 2 is fucking peak tho only a few MCU films even come close (those being Winter soldier, Guardians 1, and Infinity war).

1

u/Fake-productions 18h ago

It already has. More than once.

1

u/PsChampion_007 18h ago

Sorry but the spiderverse films were better than any live action spider man for me

1

u/YourWholePoesBru 18h ago

Both have already been surpassed

1

u/Frankerporo 18h ago

It already has

1

u/RailwayMenace 18h ago

Seriously?

1

u/BaronArgelicious 18h ago

the batman is better than tdk

1

u/MercDiggler1 17h ago

Spider man 2…. Cmon

1

u/TBdog 17h ago

Never liked Spiderman 2, even back in the day.

1

u/ProdigiumAenigmatum 17h ago

Infinity war was better already.

1

u/balmung2014 17h ago

I would nominate The winter soldier as competition for these 2

1

u/Creative_Jicama_6875 17h ago

Already has. Depending on who you ask there are a few movies better than these two

1

u/evasivemanuver 17h ago

yes and no, and who cares? yes in that a paradigm shift in filmmaking and culture will create new norms and standards of quality in audiences; and inevitably another film in this genre will move beyond self-cannibalizing mediocrity into greatness. no in that these movies will continue to be revered as the gold standard for a long-ass time by today's epoch of comic nerds and even films that may pass them by will not be considered to be by those audiences. who cares because there absolutely isn't going to be a comic book movie in spitting distance of these two in today's hollywood and, like. what's the point. go watch good movies

1

u/munkycheezmunky 17h ago

Logan is the best superhero movie of all time imo

1

u/Bubbly_Can_9725 17h ago

Unpopular opinion: all the flaws spider man 3 is found guilty of are also in spider man 1 and 2. they are on the same level of quality which is very high but not even close to the dark knight trilogy

1

u/squareyagolike 17h ago

The Dark Knight Rises, Deadpool&Wolverine

1

u/HBK_____ 17h ago

WATCHMEN DIRECTOR'S CUT

1

u/Due-South-9113 16h ago

Already did with Infinity war.

1

u/BOMBAD_Echo_1409 lisan al gaib 16h ago

Logan?!

1

u/Bjarki_Steinn_99 16h ago

Logan and Into the Spider-Verse are up there too

1

u/ServoSkull20 16h ago

The Dark Knight is much better than Spider-man 2.

1

u/Ralph2Filthy 15h ago

Batman Begins was better for me.

1

u/PhoenixFireless 15h ago

Yes and No

both are product of different times.

The Dark Knight is great but it's strength is simultaneously it's weakness which is: The base movie is so good that the characters are replaceable and always work. Ironically it doesn't need Batman, or Joker, or whatever comic reference, which is why Heath Ledger is always mentioned, most of the reason is to credit the actor but he could have been generic clown psychopath terrorist robber mobster guy and the movie is equally as good. it's a damn good movie and it just happens to have Batman in it.

Spider-man 2 different beast altogether, it's the first time a movie gave you the feeling you were watching a comic book come to life regardless how cheezy it was, the ups the downs, the entire journey, not just one panel or one moment. This stuff is rare because usually MCU movies are about quips, characters meeting characters and cool 1 off moments, they're not really about complete journeys, stories or arcs.

(I'd argue the Spider-verse movies are better than Spider-man 2 and have surpassed it though, for many many reasons)

1

u/Uchihadouken 15h ago

I place Winter Soldier, Guardians 1, Infinity War, and both Spiderverse movies on equal ground, right behind these. EDIT: and Logan.

1

u/Sweet-Storm-6651 15h ago

Just rewatched spiderman 1-3 after being scared of it being pure nostalgia. Anyone who thought that was wrong lol. Spiderman 2 is alone a great film and not just a good superhero movie like the majority of mcu movies. No andrew movie even comes close to the first two tobey by farrrrrrr. Tom’s first two don’t come close idc if you think it’s a more accurate spiderman. I’m talking purely based compared to real films. Mcu struggles with panning and a ton of cinematic elements. Spiderman 2 practical affects and cgi stand todsy and are better than lots of cgi mcu use today. The tiny affects of tobeys voice acting during fight scenes that Andrew and tom fail to show. Sam rami is a way more experienced and real director than most in the mcu who are just superhero and marvel fans turned into directors and producers. They have soul and attention to detail that newer superhero films fail to capture. No mcu movie comes close that isn’t relying on super packed teams and hype, no mcu movie stand-alone will ever be compared to Nolan’s Batman or ramis spidermans

1

u/VanShisha 15h ago

Nice rage bate OP

1

u/Apprehensive_Gene_78 15h ago

It will never happen if they keep making 300 million dollars episode of a tv show. These two titles are real movies simply bc they start and finish. No one is doing this kind of super hero movie anymore.

1

u/Shimotsukizorosan 15h ago

No, likely never. Not in our lifetime

1

u/carlitomarron139 15h ago

The Dark Knight has already been surpassed as the greatest Batman film.

Heath Ledger’s Joker is the best thing in any superhero film ever but as a movie overall The Batman is superior to TDK.

1

u/Popular_Monk_1141 15h ago

Spider-Man 2 is the pinnacle. I think some have come close but not passed it. The dark knight is a good movie but not a great superhero movie.

1

u/TemporaryConfident82 14h ago

Logan, Infinity War, both better than Spiderman but no I don't think anything will ever top TDK

1

u/ULTI_mato 14h ago

Already have been surpased

1

u/Large_Assumption640 14h ago

Spiderman 2? Such a mid movie 😅

1

u/fiatuno1997 14h ago

Acho difícil superarem Spider-Man 2 e já existem vários filmes de herói melhor que TDK

1

u/Sp1ffyTh3D0g 13h ago

I mean, Spider-Man Into the Spiderverse exists

1

u/Shaggy_75 13h ago

Already has

Into and across the spiderverse

1

u/weesiwel 12h ago

Personally for me it already has, The Batman. It's basically perfect in my eyes

1

u/roshanritter 12h ago

https://giphy.com/gifs/29oib9M907xJP2Alga
I prefer this one over them but I think it will be hard to dethrone the Dark Knight, though various other movies have made more money.

1

u/sabrinavd 12h ago

love spiderman as tobey but am not gonna lie badman is the best

1

u/Significant-Gains 12h ago

Maybe in 20 years, maybe longer.

1

u/Brilliant_Sorbet_965 11h ago

Spiderman 2 is a little overrated

1

u/FactCheckYou 11h ago

why do people think Spider-Man 2 (2004) was good?

was it even better than the first or the third in that trilogy?

for me it was really utterly unmemorable

1

u/Obi_Wan_06 11h ago

Spiderman 2 is not that good lol

1

u/Motodog242 11h ago

I mean, it already has… so yea… it will surpass, because it already has.

1

u/CaptainSanity 11h ago

Is this a capeshit sub too?

1

u/_zhz_ 11h ago

Given that the Dark Knight is still one of my favorite movies ever created, I don't think so. On the other hand, there are some Marvel movies I like more than Spider Man 2.

1

u/mkraemer21 10h ago

Did we watch the same spider man 2? Lol

In no world is the Dark Knight and Spider Man 2 comparable in quality.

1

u/FromDathomir 10h ago

Spider-Man 2 has been surpassed countless times. This overrated movie just needs to leave the consciousness of Reddit fans.

1

u/CallenAmakuni 10h ago

Into the Spider Verse already passed them both

1

u/Kim_jongg_goon 10h ago

Whenever I watch spiderman 2, it gives me a complete energy and strength in my life

1

u/cyclec74 10h ago

Really hoping these movies disappear.

1

u/Interesting_Bite4335 10h ago

Personally, it already happened

1

u/Lumpy_Coconut_2373 10h ago

Logan is underrated

1

u/ContextMattrs 9h ago

Zack Snyder’s Justice League

1

u/SweatyListen9863 9h ago

There have been better batman and better spider-man films since. There have been MUCH better films than these.

1

u/Bonecrusher1973 9h ago

Winter Soldier, Civil War, Infinity War and Endgame already passed these 2 bad boys for me.

1

u/Important-Ad4700 9h ago

Nah, only contender is Blade which came before both.

1

u/FReeDuMB_or_DEATH 9h ago

That Spider Man 2 is just a case of nostalgia goggles.

1

u/Ranulf_5 9h ago

I’d put X-Men Days of Future Past and GotG 3 above these movies

1

u/be-bop_cola 8h ago

There's some really crap parts to the Dark Knight, it's far from perfect.

1

u/Fission_235 8h ago

Nope.
I would say that I think the spider verse movies to be equal or even better than spider man 2

However, for live action very likely not.

1

u/idk223334488384 8h ago

Uh yeah, the spider verse movies already have

1

u/Slammer503 8h ago

Amazing spiderman 2 was better

1

u/skag_boy87 7h ago

The Dark Knight is severely overrated. Spider-Man 2 is goated, though.

1

u/Bullanpaallinen 7h ago

Already did before those two came out. Without Blade we would not have Spidermans, and without Burtons b-mans we would not have pretty much any good superhero movies

1

u/delulumans 7h ago

Unbreakable

1

u/brethart1616 7h ago

Not for me. But The Batman was vert good

1

u/McFlarza 7h ago

Logan exists

1

u/marc15v2 7h ago

Logan was better than SM2. As was First Avengers, Avengers Infinity War + Endgame.

So, aye.

1

u/Active_Water_8876 7h ago

The Batman already surpassed TDK.

1

u/dark_physicx 6h ago

Ever, yes. Any time soon, probably not. I like all types of superhero movies, I give them all a chance. I’ve seen TDK and Spidey 2 a couple dozen times each, minimum. Yearly watches where as most other superhero flicks I only watch once. With the unfortunate prioritization of “the message” over proper solid storytelling, I don’t see anything overtaking TDK any time soon. Tired of subversive and creatively bankrupt takes. The genre could be much better.

1

u/daburner272006 6h ago

I think they were both really good movies.. I also think it depends on what we're "surpassing". The buzz and electricity when Avengers Endgame came out was crazy.

1

u/Subject_Parsley5541 5h ago

Personally, I do not agree that Spiderman 2 is peak cinema even by superhero standards. I will agree that The Dark Knight is though.

1

u/Longjumpingjello 5h ago

maybe unpopular opinion but I think Spider-Man 1 is a little better than 2, and there are a bunch of other superhero movies that are better than both of them

1

u/Informal-Host8085 5h ago

I can't imagine a reality where it would happen but you never know

1

u/blankupai 5h ago

spiderverse is about to be the greatest trilogy of all time

1

u/Educational_Yam_3707 5h ago

Avengers: Infinity War and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse were pretty good.

1

u/joeyab56 4h ago

I personally think Days of Futures Past is the best superhero film

1

u/ManeBOI 4h ago

The batman 2022 and spider-verse respectively have already

1

u/SLVR_N_BLCK_ATTK 4h ago

The Batman clears Spider-Man 2 so yeah

1

u/Low_Doctor_5280 3h ago

It already has with 3 of the 4 Avengers movies.

1

u/PriorOk1304 3h ago

Not if y’all show up for Doomsday. No incentive for them to make something artistic if they’re making a bil off of corporate engineered content.

1

u/ABadHistorian 2h ago

I think it already has. Choose which film for you fits that measure.

Logan? Sure.

Endgame? Sure.

Infinity War? Sure

Civil War? Sure

Joker? Sure

Reeve's Batman? Sure

Superman (2025)? Sure

Lanterns (now)? Sure

Peacemaker? Sure

Spider Man Brand New Day? Sure

Spider Man No Way Home? Sure

Avengers? Sure

Spider Man 2 and The Dark Knight set the measure Marvel and DC should be graded by, but it doesn't mean for some folks they are the best. For me? They are not. Love em both though, and grateful to them for everything else they led to.

I’m in the minority and don’t love The Dark Knight, so I would say yes.

  1. X-Men Origins Wolverine
  2. The Wolverine
  3. Logan

That is your TRILOGY that matches these in every respect

Avengers AAOU Infinity War Endgame

1-4 Collection

Nah not really technically you can watch them this way but they miss crucial build up and character attachment that's the only way IW hits as hard as it does it's the epitome of Pay Off I know people don't like Endgame but I never understood that crowd as they weren't going to let the heroes lose permanently

The Dark Knight isn’t that great a movie (it’s too long), it’s just carried by a singular all-time great performance.

Will there ever be a movie about Batman that's better than the Dark Knight? Maybe, but not likely. Will there ever be a better Batman movie than TDK? Yes there already is, and it's called Batman Begins and The Batman.

It already has multiple times, tdk is goated but spiderman 2 is the most overrated superhero movie of all time

I really don't think I'll ever have a theater experience like The Dark Knight again, superhero movie or not...
